A "Core Colleseum" of Our Own?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but since I'm looking for as much feedback as I can get, General seemed a good place to start. Mods: feel free to move the thread wherever it belongs - if not here.

I've basically created this thread to see if there would be any interest / participation in a "Core Colleseum" of our own here on the Paizo forums. For those unfamiliar with CoCo (originally a big hit on the WotC forums), it's basically a core-only forum arena where we can build and fight gladiators (characters who are members of any core class and race), and participate in combats, games, matches, and gladitorial events.

Rather than wait for any number of participants to log on at once and play out a slow play-by-post match, each character you make is required to include a set of concise general tactics. The Colleseum hosts (forumites who give their time to the game on a regular basis) then play out your matches and events on the scheduled dates using the tactics that your provide. Hosts keep score, post the results to the forums, and notify the participants in particular.

If there is interest, I would be happy to do my part in setting up and participating as a host. I may not be able to run matches on a regular basis, but I could set up a GoogleDocs spreadsheet for CoCo use, write up rules, and events (and NPCs/advanced monsters/traps for events), and track or help track wins and losses, points, and so forth. I could also help validate and verify submitted characters.

If we could get enough hosts to commit to regular upkeep and match-running, it could be a lot of fun. The original CoCo was a blast.

What do you think, forums? Would you be interested?

This needs to go into Gamer Connection.

But it sounds neat. I'd be down to play, and maybe run once I know all the rules.

Dark Archive

To get specific, I would be willing to:

Track wins / losses / points / events / dates / schedules for all characters on GoogleDocs spreadsheets that everyone can view.

Write / adapt rules, post them, and update them.

Help to validate / verify the legality of new character entries.

Schedule (or help to schedule, depending on how much participation we get) matches.

Write and post some simple map / arena images that we can reference.

Write events and do stat-work for NPCs / monsters / traps.

And maybe host an event or two on the weekend.

What I can't do is host daily matches. Our primary need in order to set this up (other than a need for participants to submit characters and play) would be for volunteer hosts to be able to do the following:

1.) Be available on a scheduled, regular basis (be it weekly, daily, or whatever works out depending on the participation level we get).

2.) Read and consider the stat blocks and submitted tactics for any given match, and have a very good understanding of the rules of the game.

3.) Be able to fairly run a match between two combatants using an online dice roller (probably invisiblecastle), and post the results according to schedule.

Interesting idea. Would the events of the matches be played out in posts? Or simply run behind the scenes by those running them and only have summaries posted?

Shadow Lodge

As mentioned this is probably best put in gamer connection and the Colleseum would be in the Play by Post section... seems like the best way to do it to me anyhow.

I might be interested.

Assuming we chose to do it the same way CoCo does: matches would be posted with round-by-round play-by-play with links to the die rolls.

Example:

Round 4
Koloktron moves to 3F/7H, drawing a potion of cure serious wounds, and casts fog cloud.

Garden Tool sheathes his greatsword and flies 20 feet up, drawing a staff of fire.

Your general tactics would be submitted before each match, and interpreted and executed to the best of the host's ability.

You could make the dice rolls here.

Ok is this a pbp or you just submit pc's for someone else to fight?

And yea this should be in the gamer connection forum

seekerofshadowlight wrote:

Ah, you're right. Forgot about that.

And hosting just got that much easier.

Do we have any definate host volunteers, or just a few interested players?

And it's not exactly a pbp, no. You submit characters who participate in scheduled matches as directed by the CoCo hosts.

A gladiator style pbp was my first try at pbp really. It fell hard but I did learn from it.

Dark Archive

lol... and then this got moved to Gamer Connection, thereby ceasing to get any traffic, and failed as an idea.

No, this is where people will look for games.

I dont think i could commit to being a regular host. My schedule is too eratic. I could almost always host like one match a week, but it would rarely be the same date and time week to week.

same here, I have to many games a going and to much going on IRL to play out fights myself.

Dark Archive

Well, if we had at least one volunteer host willing to run a match every other weekday, we could have 15 matches a month. I'm willing to do the legwork, setup, and bookkeeping as well as run at least one event a weekend, too, so that's about twenty events a month with just ONE volunteer. Any (serious, dedicated) takers?

Sure, I need a new day job, low low price of $1800/month under the table!

Maybe people should submit gladiators and others can pick two and have them fight and report the results on a case by case basis. Rather than a dedicated schedule or anything?

Actually, it wouldn't take very long. Hardly a new day job.

Especially given that we do have a die roller right here on the forums.

Maybe an hour per match?

Ok it's official, I'm bored out of my mind on Sundays. Work is slow, but I have to be here, I've got no supervisors, the Paizo boards are dead on the weekend, even Reddit fails for entertainment. So I could run several matches on that day.

Maybe start with something simple;
-level 10
-core races
-core classes
-standard Wealth-by-Level
-max HP at first level, average HP rounded up
-two traits (no heirloom weapon, or rich parents)
-Backstories are not needed, but feel free to write one
-A description and personality will be needed
-A description of combat tactics, maneuvers, spell and item use will be needed.
-A more thorough description will provide a more accurately run character
-Please post the alias for the character in this thread for now
-For your alias, please have no more than 3 spoiler tags so it's easy to read through

It'll be a double elimination tournament taking place in a 90ft wide metal walled, dirt floor arena. Each fight will occur in one of the following random arenas.
-empty with four 5ft wide 20ft tall pillars (2 stone, 2 wooden), well lit
-forest like conditions with randomly placed trees, dim lighting
-full dark city conditions with 5 small buildings (each with one door)
-a 50ft deep lake in the center surrounded by a flat shore surrounded by difficult rocky terrain

Combatants will enter the arena at the same time. Initiative will be rolled and actions will be taken in that order. Initiatives may need to be re-rolled depending on conditions. I'll create a thread on the PBP boards for the Colosseum if we get interest. Each fight will be made of separate posts for each round by myself describing character actions very similar to how I run my PBP games. All rolls will be made in the post and a map for the round will be provided.

Once again this is not a PBP where you fight another character, but rather where you submit a character to be auto-piloted to the best of my ability following your stats and guidelines.

I don't know how many matches I'll be able to do. The contestants will consist of whoever posts legal entries before next Sunday. If there's one post he wins! If there's two then they get to fight each other. If there's 15... we will see...

I think that covers about everything...

The Exchange

Battlecries! Make sure that characters all have distinctive battlecries to yell at each other... and maybe a selection of 'smack talk' to pepper in there too! :)

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Haha, yes...witty banter, can't forget that.

For now let's also limit it to one entry per person.

I tried to pick terrain that might favor a variety of different classes and having it be any of those four prevents people from building a character to specifically benefit from said terrain. ie. cavalier in the empty arena.

It's an interesting idea; I played in the Core Coliseum for a couple of years and I enjoyed it. It's a lot of work to referee the fight, though.

You could certainly use some of the Core Coliseum arena maps as-is, of course. There's a handy-dandy mapping program you can use:
Arena
Cavern
City
Forest
Plains
Sewer
Temple

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Huh, those are peculiar.

I was thinking more along the lines of making the maps in Ye Olde Mapmaker and adding what I need with Inkscape like I always do.

Simple, easy to ready, and easy on the eyes.

My friend Tikael tells me he's working on, "the most survivable character ever" someone better prove him wrong. ; )

This is a any class vs. any class scenario? I would think (at level 10) that casters would have a decided advantage? Is that not the case?

I would love to toss a combatant in, but i like melee fellers.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I believe I said the strangest survivable character ever, but whatever works I suppose.

Edit: point buy? arrays?

Eben TheQuiet wrote:

That's certainly how it tended to work out in the Core Coliseum, although it has a bunch of rules to close the gap somewhat. For instance:

  • casters are only allowed to recover spells after every third fight
  • casters can only use 1/3 of their total spell levels in a given fight (plus whatever they have left over from their previous fights in the cycle)
  • there is a limit on how many potions/scrolls you can bring into a fight
  • only long-term buff spells are allowed to be cast beforehand
  • there's a limit on how many allies (familiars, animal companions, purchased animals, undead, etc.) you can bring in with you

Etc.

And how are hp progressed? 3/4 hit die? roll each level?

Yup any core class. There are some situations where a caster would be superior, and some where they wouldn't. It all depends. Remember, Pathfinder is supposed to bring all of the classes closer to the same power level. So I don't think we'll need any crazy rules like in the old colosseum.

-I would like to specify, no Leadership feat. Animal Companions and mounts are ok though.

-Only spells that would have a duration greater than 8 hours may be cast ahead of time.

Item Creation feats? Maybe I should pool all my questions at once, huh?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Eben TheQuiet wrote:

Full HP at first level than half rounded up.

1d6 = 4
1d8 = 5
1d10 = 6
1d12 = 7

Also somehow I forgot to mention let's go with 20-pt buy.

Eben TheQuiet wrote:

For Item Creation feats let's have them give you two items at half cost.

Don't worry about questions, I'll repost with updated and compiled information tomorrow or something.

This is just a test run of something that'll keep me entertained. So rules might be completely different next time!

Also a time limit of 2 minutes. After that "interesting things" start to happen in the arena.

Dark Archive

I take it core only means core pathfinder (so no Eberron shifters for example?)

Core means only options found in the Core Rulebook, which excludes Shifters. Also, just for clarity, core in 3.5 also excluded Shifters as, once again, they were not in the Players Handbook.

That's probably a good idea, 'cos it crossed my mind that the best way to spend your 62,000 gp ('Wealth by Level') for being level 10 in such a combat is to just hire 200,000 mercenary warriors (for 3 sp per day each), and spend the last 2,000 gp on some basic armour and stuff for yourself. Sure, only 1 in 20 hit with their chucked rocks or whatever, but that's still an average of 10,000 hits your opponent is taking each round...

Dark Archive

So lvl 10 for this? also if we arent controlling the characters are we at least allowed to give a general overview of how they fight tactics etc? Finally is the APG considerd core or none core for this?

Kevin Mack wrote:

Since the APG is not quite out yet just the Core Rulebook Classes and Races options.

"-A description of combat tactics, maneuvers, spell and item use will be needed.

An overview of tactics, absolutely! The more the better.

I suppose you could buy 10,000 minions....but I won't let them in the arena with you ;)

As it is an arena it should be one on one. I can see pets being allowed or maybe a pair of trained dogs but really hirelings and such should be out

So you want our submissions by this next sunday?

Also, i'm really struggling between what I think will be most successful and what I think is coolest. Decisions, decisions.

Correct, next Sunday is when I will be sitting at work with virtually nothing to do for 9 hours.

So I will take your toys and smash them up against each other...

My gladiator Lethe mostly done (just need to add tactics and a tweak or two)

Um... Those stats don't look like a 20 pt buy... Even with rage already factored that's about a 25 pt buy.

Dark Archive

20 point buy (14 str, 14 Dex, 14 Con, 10 Int, 14 Wis and 10 cha.) Then the +2 for being a half-elf (Con 16), then the +2 for 4th and 8th lvl (str 16) and then +2 to str Dex and con for the belt of physical perfection (18 str 16 dex 18 con)

AaaaaaaaHhhh... Rookie mistake. Didn't count the gear boosts.

I humbly ask for your pardon and can't wait to be destroyed by Lethe.

Okay, i have an item pricing question. For pricing a +1 flaming burst weapon, do you add the +1 base price modifier and the +2 base price modifier (equalling 10,000gp) or do you add the two bonuses, then price it (meaning a +3 bonus total with a price tag of 18,000gp)?

The price is the combined total so a +1 flaming burst is +18,000gp.

Updated with tactics

A savage looking human in scarred dragon-hide armor swaggers into the room, a predatory eye sweeping over the other combatants. He cuts his eyes over to his companion, a hunting cat nearly the size of a horse and mutters, "So, I wonder who's on the menu today, Kitty?"

Okay, Rorsk is mostly ready. I'm working through statting up his Wildshape forms for your convenience.

That +1 keen amulet of mighty fists actually costs 20,000g, not 8,000. Good job on everything else, looks real nice.

Ah, sorry. had changed the purchase on my personal document, but not updated it online.. it's fixed now. will have remaining forms up through the rest of this week.

looks like slim pickin's for combatants, huh?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

I know of at least one other person joining, but hey here's still 5 days. No big deal. I have a feeling with even 2 fights I'll be plenty entertained.

The Exchange

Just to check: it's Wealth by Level (so 62,000 gp) right? Is that a max. of half on any one item? Can anything other than mundane and magic items be purchased - e.g. Permanency enhanced spells (the ability to see Invisible guys could be a lifesaver in a situation like this one - I'm guessing I'm not the only one to figure an Invisible Conjurer is pretty hard to beat), or high-cost material components? Could, for example, a Necromancer have spent 1,000 gp on onyx to animate 40 HD of undead he takes into the arena with him (hey - if the Druid gets his Animal Companion, why not let the Necro get his skellies)? Just wondering, is all...;)

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Well part of this is to see how creative people can be. I love shows like Yu-Gi-Oh were each episode involves something crazier than before! So I don't really care how you spend it. If you want to blow 58,000g on a robe of stars cause you think it'll win you everything go for it. This isn't the DPR Olympics here ; )

-Custom magic items are not allowed for this tournament.

Spending money on material components is fine ie. permanency. Regarding that spell you might becareful going overboard as someone could strip if off you with a successful dispel magic

You could buy a ton of onyx and use it to cast animate dead, but only during the fight. Once again this is a fight between characters, not 1,000 commoners, a hundred undead ogres, or the planar entity you've bound for the day. Unless you do those things in the arena.

If you kill Mittens the tiger animal companion and want to spend a round animating it's skeleton, go for it. But your 40 undead henchmen have to stay outside.

[Rules are subject to arbitrarily change]
