How does it cost?

Rules Questions

...how much does it cost to build a simple stone tower as a PC headquarters/home?

If there is another thread on this subject let me know.

...The reason I ask is that I saw in the leadership feat that if a PC has a "headquarters, stronghold, base of operations or guildhouse" they get a +2 bonus.

I figured some form of manor, tower, keep, or castle would qualify but I'd love to know what the absolute lowest cost would be (besides moving into the nearest cave and sticking a sign out front with "Go Away" on it)

Thanks,

Bloodwort

I think that a tower for the leadership feat that grants an advantage would have to have a design and size that is useful to the number of followers you wanted to attract. What do each of your followers do with or gain from the tower?

In fairness you probably have to multiply the number of your followers by some factor to account for hangers on etc... etc... A tower is a shape but a base that would give you a bonus to your leadership should be a perk for all your followers.

Additionally the tower will have upkeep and defense demands.

Of course this is complicated but then leadership is a complicated feat.

Hrm, well. The 3.0 WOTC book, "The Stronghold Builder's Guide," is all about building and pricing different bases of operations.

In it, there's an example stronghold called the Cheap Keep, with enough space for 14 minions. I imagine that more of your followers might live in a nearby town, among the surrounding farms, and so forth. Listed price for this basic keep is 70,000 gp, which would give a nice bed to sleep in for you and everyone in your party, and people to make you dinner, stables to keep your horses, and a vault to stow your extra crap.

In the book is a feat, "Landlord," which gives you extra money to spend on your keep and matches funds (which effectively cuts your stronghold's price in half). It's only available at 8th level, though.

Hope that's helpful!

Check out A Magical Mideval Society: Western Europe if this is the direction you're going. It has all you would need to know IIRC.

+1

I tend towards low-economy campaigns and so had to make alterations to the pricing in this book (I calculated that the cost for a farmer to build his own 1-room log cabin was an astounding 80gp).

Nevertheless, I found it an excellent general reference, and even automated a spreadsheet based upon it to calculate building costs, upkeep, etc.

I glanced through the Stronghold Builder's Guide and thought the prices were WAY too expensive.

Don't you think a high-level wizard with "wall of stone" and "stone shape" and a several points in "engineering" could construct his own "base" or "tower" in a matter of days/weeks at very little cost.

Hmm? Doesn't that sound doable? The biggest expense would be buying or leasing the plot of land.

In the 3.5e DMG it had cost for different sized houses, mansions, towers, and castles. It is on page 101, top right corner of page.
