Staples refused to print out a free PDF I downloaded.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I went to my local staples to print out the bonus bestiary for Pathfinder. The guy said he could not print it out because it was copyrighted and I did not work for Paizo. I showed hime the watermark on the pages with my name and email, and I showed him my ID showing it was me, he still refused to print it out. I like to go to staples to print out the free PDFs to save on ink.

Is Staples right to do this? Is it ok for me to print out my PDFs?

I'm sure Paizo has no problem with you printing out PDFs that you legally obtained from them. As far as Staples...they're being silly*, but they're obviously within their rights. I'd just go elsewhere.

* "Silly" as in there is no legal reason to refuse to print out the PDFs, but from their point of view, it probably makes perfect sense to "just say no."

We don't mind you printing a copy of your Paizo PDF for personal use.

I've used Kinko's with no problems in the past. And they can bind the printouts if needed ... not bad on cost for that aspect either.

It really just depends on who you talk to.

I've walked into a Kinkos before, handed them a CD with several Pathfinder Society-related PDFs on it, and then had to go back later and prove to a manager that I actually worked for Paizo and could use the logos and such included in the printing project.

I've also dropped off a bucket-load of projects full of our logos and IP and not had a single employee bat an eye at me.

Most of the print shops have rules for printing PDFs or photocopying books and those rules are designed to prevent the shop from being sued to pieces. That guy at Staples is well within his rights and likely well within company policy to refuse you, but I bet if you went back and asked another employee, you'd like find a different application of the rule.

CapeCodRPGer, just print out this thread and bring it along with the CD. You've basically got 2 paizo people saying you can print it out for personal use. :)

The thing that really bugs me is that it was the same guy that I had no issues with before.

Also - have him open up the PDF - it should have your name on the watermark at the bottom of every page - that is proof that it s legally obtained (might need to show him your license too) It's wore in MA than the 3 other states I've printed in, most likely because of the judges that heard every case and refuse to throw anything out of court. (That was from a copy center employee when I pointed out the discrepancy in handling this process)

I did have him open it and I showed him the watermark with my name, and I showed him my drivers license. The guy still refused to print it out. I'm not going to take Staples to court. I will just take my business to Kinkos from now on.

He'd probably been chewed out by some manager and was doing a CYA.

If you go to Kinkos, its on that manager's head that they lost your business.

I've gone to Kinkos with several PDFs, and when asked about the copyright, I refer them to the page containing the OGL...

Seems to be sufficient enough for them on every occasion, even when ordering prints from them on-line...

ah Kinkos. How I love to hate them. They do that all the time. Just wait a working shift and the next guy will do it. They act like they understand copyright and public domain, but they do not. I once sent the Mona Lisa to be printed for my own use and was told "you're not the artist of this" I said "Look Girlfriend. That guy's been dead over 200 years. I think the copyright has expired on it". She printed it.

Hi All -
I've printed the PF Core Rules at my local college (being an alumni helps) with binding and it cost me $28.00. Of course I also have the hard cover version. But it was nice to have a second copy for use at the table. Now everybody has converted to Pathfinder - some reluctantly.
So for those of you with colleges and community colleges nearby, I would recommend using them. Also, instead of larger copy shops - the smaller local printing places will do it even cheaper. I printed my entire Second Darkness campaign for $.03 a page and $.05 double sided.

LOL. Hey, do you think someone with enough genius to design the helicopter in the 16th century would be stopped by something as small as death?!? You'll be hearing from his lawyers, mark my word.

(Seriously, though, he's been dead for over FOUR hundred years.)

The Exchange

I've had a Kinkos store refuse to print out a Paizo PDF. I went into the store with my laptop and showed them the site and the fact that all of the PDFs are stamped with my name. That might be more work than you want to put into but it worked for me.

Hawk Of May.

I've had Staples question it but I showed them I owned the PDF by the watermark and have not had any problems with getting any of them printed out.
