Old School adventure - recruiting for pbp

Gamer Connection

I am currently running a Ptolus pbp on the pages, but I am considering also running an 'old school' 3.5 adventure. I will run one of the following: Temple of Elemental Evil, Night Below or Rappan Athukk. Character classes are to be core only, i.e, whats in the 3.5 players handbook.
Max of 6 players so if there are more takers then I will select randomly. Also I would prefer it if players have little experience of the adventure I choose to run.

Decided! Its gonna be Rappan Athukk. All pc's will start at 4th level.

Just adding my dot. I'd love to play but I own the adventure and have run it several times. I'll be sure to follow your adventures, though.

Grand Lodge

When is your "planned" start date?

Probably within the next week, if we get enough players.

The pc's will be members of an established adventuring band, the Company of the Broken Blade, who are setting out from a town and heading into the wilderness.

Due to the starting level of 4th, characters will start with 5400gp worth of equipment, both magical and mundane.

I know nothing about Rappan Athuk. Count me in!

Liberty's Edge

I've never played it either. Count me in as well!

JZ, Dark Minstral; good to have you on board. Please go ahead and create characters. Standard races, standard classes (from 3.5 players handbook).
I would like to try and get a balanced party if possible.

Max HP at 1st level, then roll for them as normal. Attribute increase at 4th level.

I will post backgrounds such as setting, gods etc very soon.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS ADVENTURE IS RENOWNED FOR ITS ABILITY TO DO A TPK (Total Party Kill)

TPK? Bring it on! Er, then again, maybe not :)

Do we roll for attributes, or point buy?

DOH! Ok, I'm ready ;-)

I will start working on a character. Just waiting to find out about JZ's attribute question. I would like to play a rogue, unless you had your heart already set on a rogue, JZ. My second choice would be wizard.

I prefer good old rolling of dice. 4d6 and discard the lowest.

As promised, here's a bit of the background.....

Many hundreds of years ago, the forces of good allied to destroy the main Temple of Orcus in the ancient city of Tsar. With their temple in ruins, the surviving high priests of this accursed demon-god fled the city with an army of enemies on their trail - an army of heroic fighters, clerics and paladins - led by Zelkor, a powerful wizard. The exact fate of these evil priests was then unknown, for not only did the
remnants of the followers of Orcus disappear from all human reckoning, but so did the army of light that followed after them disappear as well. Some said that in the eternal scales the loss of so many good men was a fair price to pay to rid the world of so much evil.

The evil cult, however, had not been destroyed. The surviving priests and their followers instead settled on a hill near the Forest of Hope, a sylvan woodland near the Coast Road. There they found a vast underground complex of caverns and mazes, carving out a volcanic
intrusion beneath the hill. There, the priests of Orcus found the perfect lair to continue their vile rituals. For many years, they carried on in secret, hidden from the light and from the knowledge of men.

Many years later, their underground delving completed, the evil priests erected a hideous mausoleum and a sunken graveyard atop the hill. It is believed that these graves are in fact the final resting place of the pursuing army of heroes that had been destroyed to a man. Soon after the mausoleum was erected the peaceful creatures of the wood began to disappear. Though many rangers and druids investigated these happenings, the cause of the creatures’ disappearance was not immediately determined. Some years later, a powerful group of adventurers, led by Bofred, a high priest of St. Cuthbert, investigated the evil happenings and found the sunken graveyard leading to a labyrinthine complex. Bofred and his companions found great hordes of evil creatures in the complex. Though some of his companions returned from their expedition, telling tales of fantastic treasure and ferocious
monsters, Bofred was never seen again—lost in the catacombs beneath the cursed mausoleum.

For the last one hundred years, ranks of adventurers swarmed to the newfound dungeon. Many fell prey to bandits and monsters in the surrounding wilderness. Of those who survived to reach the mausoleum and
the sunken graveyard, rumors suggest that most were slain by guardians of green stone before they even entered the dungeon or perished on the very first level. Those rare few who return from deeper treks speak of horrible undead and creatures that cannot be slain. All who have explored Rappan Athuk offer this one universal piece of advice: “Don’t go down the Well.”

The Company of the Broken Blade is travelling north from the city of Bard's Gate in the hopes of finding the legendary Dungeon of Graves. Ever since the early days of your careers, you have been battling the forces of Orcus. Rappan Athuk, of course, contains the base of power for Orcus on the Prime Material Plane.

Liberty's Edge

Awesome! Sounds interesting and fun. I will begin rolling up my character after work today. Should have it posted by earlyish tommorow.

I have never ran a pbp before, but would love to. I am sure I will need some help getting started, but I feel like I am a quick learner. I have an alias that I had planned on using as a rogue if I could ever find a game.

If all that sounds ok, I would love to give it a try.

edit-I can play whatever (just noticed someone mentioning playing a rogue).

You are welcome to join RaFon. If we get two rogues its not a problem.

Just for your info, im not a rules lawyer so to me the story is more important. If you slip up or make a mistake during the game dont worry, cos I probably will too, and i've been playing for 22 years.

If you could kinda tell me what I need to do to get started, that would be cool. Like I said, this is my first pbp. How do I do up a character? How do I roll?

I will understand if my lack of knowledge sounds like too much of a hassle. One plus though. . .I work mostly days, so i will be able to post pretty often.

Scarab Sages

I would like to play, though I am not sure what.

Shadow Lodge

An AP with a reputation for TPKs? Sounds like fun...
*malicious grin*

You don't have anything against negative energy clerics do you? I've always wanted to play one, and last time I tried he was termed by the other players as 'useless'.

Hey Dark.

My first thought upon reading a 3.5 game at 4th level was playing a neutral or evil Cleric of Obad-Hai (or whomever) who channeled negative energy and had the Earth and Fire Domains. Rebuke/Command goodness!

But I won't have time for this one. Good hunting all!

I'm going to play a paladin. Hope no one minds.

Shadow Lodge

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring.

If you're still taking people.

Liberty's Edge

Hi Db3! Hi all!

Since RaFon wants to play a rogue, I'll play an arcane caster - Wizard. I really couldn't decide between the rogue and wizard so that helped me make up my mind. I will post my wizard alias as soon as I get my sheet drawn up. Should be soon )

I have no problems with a paladin, JZ.

Shadow Lodge

My cleric won't be evil, so a paladin is most likely to just be annoying at worst, so no problem here.

Following the rules for a cleric, can I pick the Healing and Death domains and be a cleric of Life? My reasoning for the Death domain is that death is a part of life, no matter how hard you try to avoid it.

And creating undead to fight undead? No brainer for me, doing evil for a greater good and all that. ;)

Hello all

finally got around to scope out these forums and discovered this little thread.

I have only been part of a few failed pbp games my biggest problem has been with dice rolling.

mosy of my posting is done during breaks at work and all the on-line dice rolling sites are blocked (some sort of on-line gambling tag or something)

but If there is any chance of giving this a go I would like to try.

I prefer fighter types (usually a dwarven fighter).

OK, roll a character as you would normal, then advance it to 4th level. All dice rolls are done by the player. I trust players to be honest. If you say you rolled a 20 then fair enough.

A Paladin will be good. I'll post a list of deities in a short while.

This is fine. I'll post some deity details soon.

A Dwarf fighter would be a welcome addition. And just roll using dice.

Aww, I have to have a deity?

So, we have:-

Dragonborn = cleric

JZ = paladin

PsionicFox = to be decided

RaFon = Rogue

Dark Minstrel = Wizard

Edward Sobel = Dwarf Fighter

Thats enough I think, so if everyone can now go ahead and create a character, we should have a pretty balanced party.

Okay if we have a Fighter, I think I'll run with a Ranger. Probably a Half-Elf (because Arcane Archer rocks).

So I may start off as a Ranger 3/Sorcerer 1.

Quick question - I know only core classes are being permitted, but how are you about racial substitution levels (from the various Races books)? I'm specifically thinking of the Elven Wizard and Elven Ranger ones.

Alternatively, I might play a Monk.

Hello. . .I am RaFon's alias. This is the character I will be using. And if I understood right, we are just rolling dice at home.

So. . .here we go.

Str: 15
Dex: 18+1 (4th)=19
Con: 17
Int: 14
Wis: 11
Chr: 14

Do we post the whole character sheet in our profile? Is there a easy way to do that, or do you just type it all in?

Thanks

<--------------Dark Minstrel here. My alias profile contains all of my character record information. I rolled for scores and then created the character on PC Gen. Hopefully there are no mistakes.

Shadow Lodge

Quick question.

I've been watching 'Samurai 7' (the anime, not the movie, 'Seven Samurai') lately, and I'd really like a play a Kambei-inspired character.

With that in mind, I'm planning on pursuing the Monk class, but I wanted to know, Dr. Dark, if I would be allowed to pull a feat from the Eberron Campaign Setting.

The feat in question is called: Whirling Steel Strike, and it allows a longsword to be used just like any other Monk special weapon (flurry of blows, etc).

I'd build him either as a straight Monk, or as a Fighter/Monk (probably full Monk).

Would that be permitted?

Shadow Lodge

Damn those were good rolls.
