Elder Scrolls Interest Check (PFRPG1)

Recruitment

Okay, I know BethSoft's the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is a masterpiece of a game. Trying to copy that masterpiece, or trying to expect something like it from D&D 3.5 (and PFRPG1e) and you run into problems. So here's a Disclaimer.

NO ONE SHOULD EXPECT SOMETHING LIKE SKYRIM FROM THIS GAME, PERIOD!

While PFRPG 1 and 2 can't copy the Skyrim experience perfectly, it lets you do something that SKYRIM can't. That's actual roleplay, and while Daggerfall aims to be a roleplaying experience, it's still bound by the constraints of a computer game. D&D and PFRPG are NOT bound by the constraints of a computer game.

PFRPG relies on classes. And while Skyrim allows you to create the kind of character you want (you can do anything in Skyrim), a classed based game like PFRPG still pigeonholes you into a role. So there, that should allay any expectations.

The game is set in the 4th Era. We will be playing in Cyrodill, the Imperial Province. We will be using PFRPG 1e. So, who is interested in playing in the Elder Scrolls universe? Note, I have not played Elder Scrolls Online yet -- years of playing World of Warcraft and how that ate up my free time has prevented me from playing ESO.

I'd be interested in playing Skyrim. My computer character was a sort of bowman mage so maybe try something going into arcane archer. Or eldritch knight or arcane trickster. Any character from a classless game usually ends up as some sore of mage and either fighter or thief type character. Sometimes all 3.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've actually had some success running a Spheres-only Elder Scrolls game with my old group. Talents really give you that 'perk tree' feeling from Skyrim. It's not a perfect translation by any stretch of the imagination, but it emulates that kind of game better than first-party stuff. Just throwing that idea out there to see if it gels with you, as I know not every GM is cool with Spheres.

That's actually a pretty cool idea.

I'm not cool with the Spheres system, although it's a good attempt to push the D&D/Pathfinder rules set into a new direction.

I'd be down for an Elder Scrolls game. Nice chance to play some PF1 as well.

I've recently started playing through Morrowind again. So many great memories of exploring the dwemer ruins. Hands down my favorite Elder Scrolls game.

I don't know if I have the time for it (work/school/kids/ + current PBP games [1 GM & 1 PC]) but man would I love to play. Do you have a timeframe of when it would be set in the 4th era? I think it would be awesome to play in the post Oblivion timeline, just curious how far away from the gates being closed it would be.

Yeah, Cartographer, it would happen after the coming of the Last Dragonborn.

Since the game is post-Last Dragonborn, does that mean that the two (or was it three?) Dragonbreaks that occurred during the Skyrim storyline are canon? If so, what are the repercussions of that for the setting everyone will have to work with since Dragonbreaks basically warp causality and create a timeline where two disparate events happened at the same time? I ask because Dragonbreaks have caused a lot of uproar in the lore, one big example being the whole ascension of Talos in ancient times and that served as (in my opinion anyway) the root cause of the war with the Thalmor since he both did and did not ascend as a god.
