Great, but Beware Confusion!

4/5

Since I'm running the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, I figured I should go all in and pick up the official Rise of the Runelords Dice Set. I've now used these dice for about a dozen sessions, and on the whole I'm happy with them. The set comes with the usual assortment: 1d20, 1d12, 2d10s, 1d8, 1d6, and 1d4. The corners of each die contain small sihedron runes (the 7-pointed star that has significance in the Adventure Path) and the borders contain the ancient Thassilonian runes representing the deadly sins of pride, gluttony, sloth, wrath, lust, envy, and greed. For each die, the highest number on the die is the rune for one of those sins. It's a cool set in that way and cleverly incorporates memorably symbols from the Adventure Path onto the dice themselves. I'll never run this Adventure Path again, so having custom dice for it as the GM is a nice souvenir.

My only complaint is that a couple of the runes just happen to look like "1s", and thus it would be easy for the roller to confuse rolling a 1 on that die with rolling the highest number (the rune) on that die. This is an issue with the d8 and one of the d10s. It's not a big enough deal that I would recommend against buying the set, but it's worth paying attention to lest poor rolls be attributed to bad luck rather than a misinterpretation of what those dice show!

Annoying runes

3/5

The dice look great overall but instead of the highest value showing for each dice there is a rune. It's a bit confusing at time as some of the runes look like numbers from a distance.

Beautiful

5/5

I just got these dice today. They're very attractive dice. The detail is amazing. If anyone was wondering, the highest number on each piece is represented by a Rune (One of seven, each piece is different... No spoilers here :P). In the discussion it's mentioned that these dice are very "busy." There are additional smaller runes and scroll work around the numbers on each face. This can make the numbers a little difficult to read from even a short distance (across a decent sized table). If you're the GM rolling these, like I am, then there's no need to fret. If you're the GM, and one of your players are rolling them, make sure they're a trustworthy player, or that another player is keeping them honest. If all of your players are trustworthy, then you're good-to-go.

I purchased my dice on Amazon (with a Prime Account) for $13.32, free 2-day shipping. The cheapest I've seen on Amazon has been $10.05 (+$4.58 S&H), the most expensive was $13.98 (+$8.09 S&H).

perfect

5/5

These dice have a great look and feel. The detail is crisp and I love the rune for the highest possible roll; it adds a little touch of the arcane to the experience.

Really like these dice

4/5

I really enjoy these dice, though I am only giving them a 4 star for the following reason...

There not as nice as some of the other Q-Workshop dice :)

Though since I received them as a reward for running RotRL in my LFGS, they treat me well and roll many a natural 20 :)

So is the D12 the 'sloth' die, since it doesn't come out to play very often?

Or is it 'envious' of it's more popular cousins?

There seems to be a problem with the price: when I wanted to order them, it used the list price to deduct my Pathfinder Advantage, so those dice would cost me 15.30 instead of 13,77.

The d8 is sloth. Envy is on the d12 (though the prototype we were sent for the photo doesn't have the correct rune, which is why the photo shows a "1" instead of the rune).

The Pathfinder Advantage discount is always taken off MSRP, and it doesn't stack with other discounts. So it's working as it's supposed to.

What a rip-off. I want to cancel all my subscriptions and pending orders.

No, I'm not. I'm strung out on Pathfinder. Damn you guys!

:D

By the way, will there be other colours?

Envy green perhaps? lol

Will these be a part of any subscription?

No, they're BONE, for they are carved from their ENEMIES! :D

You might note that this is called the "Rise of the Runelords" dice set.

(Hmm—how would you follow up the "Rise of the Runelords" dice set...?)

Nope. Accessories generally won't be. (But if you're a Pathfinder subscriber, you do, of course, get the Pathfinder Advantage discount of 15% off MSRP.)

Ick. They're cheater dice.

What I mean is that they're extremely busy, with lots of useless junk on the die face. Exactly the sort of dice favored by one of my players, who never seems to roll under a 16 on a D20...not that I can confirm it without walking over to him and getting within a few inches of the die.

I think this will be the first paizo product that I won't be buying, and will in fact ban from my game (just like I've banned all other Q dice).

Also...$20 for a set of 7 dice? Even the fanciest Chessex sets are half that price! $20 for a set of dice that are hard to read and encourage cheating? No thanks.

Just wanted to note that these are NOT Paizo products, but rather licensed products from Q-Workshop. They do use our Pathfinder license and we will be eagerly selling them here on paizo.com, but we don't have any control over what prices they set on the products. Just wanted to be sure that was clear. :)

Oh, okay. Well, let me ammend my statement then: By hitching their wagon to paizo's star, Q-Workshop almost made a set of dice I'd buy. Almost.

I'd go with a different company, and a less busy design. I'd love to be get a set of red dice with black lettering and that sin symbols as the highest number, but all the scribbles on the sides of the die are really annoying.

Hm.. "Fall of the Runelords"? "Staying up of the Runelords"? "Hitting the Ceiling and Bumping the Head of the Runelords?"

Does the first one mean that we'll also get a runelords edition of falling?

Lisa Stevens wrote:

Oh, really? And how do you explain this email correspondence Xanderghul's spies have just sent me?

QW: "So, production of the dice will begin soon. Oh, and good news: We can lower the price a lot because of new production techniques.
Lisa S (oh, no, that's too obvious, we don't want to give away names here, let's call her L. Stevens): "No! You can't lower the price! In fact, we need you to raise it. The extra profit will go directly to Our Lord Karzoug's war chest to help him conquer those foolish barbarians and restore proper civilisation to these parts. Long live Greed!"
QW: "Okay then. Better than being turned to gold I guess."
LS: "You better believe it."

You didn't think that wouldn't get out, did you?

:P

That's not the dice's fault. It's your fault for not torturing the guy enough to set him straight. If you're underequipped, I have a MTK (mobile torture kit - they're neat, they transform every normal table into a proper torture studio - including proper straps to restrain the victim and a rubber mat with extra-high borders to prevent blood getting on the floor/carpet) I could lend you. ;-)

Did the price just go up several dollars?

No. The price of these dice was set incorrectly in the database and should now be correct at $18 MSRP.

Any chance of an ETA other than "August" on these yet?

We hope to have them by Gen Con... but shipping from Poland can be unpredictable.

Wow here something new that I didn't know was coming out. Question, will these be going out to other retailers or just here? Love Paizo, but there are certain things that I like getting elsewhere (ie showing support for that store or carrying Paizo products).

Plus, gives a reason to finally pick up a Q-Workshop diceset, ha ha.

thanks

They're not exclusive. I know that Alliance Distribution is carrying them, but I couldn't tell you who else Q-workshop is selling them to.

Actually, I'm told we're expecting them to be delivered to us *at* Gen Con, so we'll have them for sale at our show booth, and then we'll bring them back to paizo.com after the show.

I can't make out the numbers on these dice (except for the one '1' on the d12, which is not current design)

Am I not understanding the numeral system, or what?

I feel your pain regarding the 'cheater guy' in your group. One of ours must be his cousin...and the look on his face when I presented a dice tray (I camouflaged the need for it with people rolling dice off the table, and losing them, so it was only half a lie). Anyways, we had been using a tray for miniatures games for a bit. Guess what? His rolls are much more sane now...Gosh, amazing how a guy shooting 4 arrows a round fumbles once in a while with a dice tray (Thanks Paizo Fumble Deck!!!).

As far as Q Workshop: Yes, they are pricey, and the US dollar isn't helping that. However, they are made in Poland, not in a Chinese sweat shop,so I sort of expected that. Not for everyone,I know, but I love them. The bright solid colors are a refreshing change from Chessex's wishy washy 'raspberry swirl' style of dice.

The details: Some are better than others. I swear by the 'Runic' dice, but the Elvish, Cthulhu, many others are just too busy with strange little details. Anyways, the Pathfinder Dice look OK, but I'd like to see them in person before I buy.

The Rune is the '1', I suppose. You can't make out the numbers on the other faces showing? Click on the pic, for a close-up. The other faces clearly show numbers(80,40 on the 10s die, for example).

The *highest* number on each die has been replaced with one of the seven Runelord runes.

This price is about right for fancy dice like this. The Call of Cthulhu dice and Elven Rune dice are $20+ at my FLGS.

I got an elven rune d20 that my wife quickly commandeered for working Free RPG day. These fancy dice are pretty cool.

Our convention shipment arrived in our remote warehouse, and we're moving the stuff we need to our local warehouse today. We still have to inventory it, but hopefully we'll have it all dealt with by Friday.
