This was fine until the day he witnessed a murder in Korvosa. Julian was following a strange man with a holy symbol of Phrasma, when the man assassinated a local government official. It was very obviously planned in advance and over very quickly. Julian's small size and stealthiness allowed him to get away undetected by the assassin. But before he did, he saw the man say a prayer, briefly revealing a hidden unholy symbol that Julian didn't recognize.
Julian researched the unholy symbol and discovered it was the symbol of the Reaper of Reputations, Norgorber, god of secrets. He realized that his own penchant for following others to discover their secrets, and keep them to himself, fit in very well with the mysterious deity's methods. Soon after, Julian noticed a new group of freckles bunched up closely on his arm that resembled the shape of Norgorber's unholy symbol. He knew the god wanted his worship, and he was soon granted divine magic of an inquisitor.
Knowing he must keep the source of his divine power secret, Julian actually joined the church of Pharasma. He went through a complete training program to learn how to be an inquisitor, eventually using the divine power granted by Norgorber to pretend Pharasma had favored him, and given him the power. He claimed that Pharasma had told him to travel the world hunting undead, so he used that as an excuse to leave the quiet life in the church to join the Pathfinder Society.
Upon joining the Society, he quickly allied himself with Zarta Dralneen's Dark Archive. While being a Pathfinder field agent and priest of Pharasma are just cover for his true goals, he does his best in both of these roles. He hopes that gaining fame and prestige within the Society, the Church of Pharasma, and the Dark Archive will eventually open up the access he seeks to all of their greatest secrets. Chief among these that Julian wants to learn is the identities of the Decemvirate, the 10 secret leaders of the Pathfinder Society.
