Monastic Schools / Martial Styles of the Inner Sea?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Scarab Sages

Hey Golariophiles,

I know that monks are a fairly recent transplant to the Inner Sea region, either from the Crown of the World or from Casmaron via the Golden Path, but what named schools / orders / etc. are there in the Inner Sea Region?

I've caught the Houses of Perfection in Jalmeray, and I vaguely recall something about an all-female monastic order in service to House Thrune, but is that it?

With the cross-cultural intersections between Vudra and the Keleshite Empire, you'd think there'd at least be some styles in Qadira.

Any help would be appreciated. I imagine we'll see more of these across Golarion in the yet-announced "Inner Sea Combat" and "Tian Xia Gazeteer".

NOTE: Certainly no guarantees on either of those titles, but they do seem pretty likely; even if "Inner Sea Combat" is an ugly name for a book.

AS far back as Thassilon, the monks of the Peacock Spirit built monasteries in the Storval Plateau of Varisia. They are the oldest, I think...(PF#1)

Monks of the Peacock Spirit, huh?

Thanks!

Yeah; monks have been in the Inner Sea Region pretty much as long as any other class. Maybe not to the same extent as a wizard or a cleric, but much more so than a gunslinger or a summoner for sure. They're pretty solidly one of the "middle" classes in terms of overall population in the Inner Sea region.

It's homebrew stuff (and, in light of the introduction of Archetypes, might be better served by a complete rewrite), but here's some thoughts on Chelish styles based on emulating the combat techniques of devils (and other LE fiendish types).

Yeah--- here's PFwiki on them. They were also known as the Therassic Order. The Monks of the White Feather in Qadira also may be affiliated with that entity.

The Cult of the Ebon Destroyers is in Jalmeray.

The Brimstone Haruspex are Orc monks in Belkzen, but they may be of the non-martial variety.

The Ouat are Dwarf Monks from Osirion.

There is also an Order in Ulcazar, Ustalav, called the Monastery of the Veil, but, again, these may be regular clergy, rather than warriors.

The Monastery of the Seven Forms is in Taldor.

The Kusari-Gama are described in the Faction Guide.

The Temple of the Endless Step is near Kaer Maga.

The Sisters of the Golden Erinyes is in Cheliax.

It strikes me that a category: Monastic Orders ought to be added to Pathfinderwiki, since this took some digging. This list is almost certainly incomplete.

Holy crow!

That's some research-fu you have there, Jeff. Many thanks for all the great work you've done here.

Does anyody have more details on the Osirioni Ouat ?

The wiki entry cites the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, p. 13-15 as source, though the current version of that document lacks any mention of the Ouat...

Also did anyone assign actual styles (as in feats, monk archetypes and multiclass/PrC selection and perhaps even alternate weapon selections) to the different monastic orders?

Take for example the Ouat. They are Osirioni monks who shave themselves and often act as bodyguards for wizards.

I think the following feats are probably prevalent in their style: Combat Reflexes, Bodyguard, In Harm’s Way, Improved Grapple, Stand Still, Improved Disarm, Improved Trip

They often choose the Monk of the Sacred Mountain and/or the Ki Mystic archetype, and some multiclass as TWF-Fighters or enter the Stalwart Defender prestige class.

Just take a look at this picture of an orcish Belkzen monk and tell me he is not a monk/oracle of battle/barbarian multiclass. :-)

The Visiting Belkzen blog post has a bit more on the Brimstone Haruspex.

Now for their style, all imho, ymmv:

The orc monks of the Brimstone Haruspex combine the Monk of the Empty Hand and Weapon Adept styles into a true mastery of improvised weapons. (Hint: check out the pic again! Fists wrapped up in broken chains!) Another faction practices the repulsive Hungry Ghost Monk style.

They often multiclass as Oracles of Battle revering Rovagug, though sometimes only for a few levels due to low CHA scores. Most suffer from the wasting curse as a result of breathing in the vapors from the active fumaroles in order to spin weird and bloody prophecies, though the odd lame or blind orcs often find solace behind their walls. Some also speak in tongues.

Many have a few levels in Barbarian, often choosing the Breaker, Savage or Invulnerable Rager archetypes.

Actually..

Spoiler:
...this is a front for the blades of the Anaphexia, an order of religious assassins sworn to Norgorber and the keeping of secrets. They are described in the Prince of Wolves novel and seem to be cleric/monks of Norgorber iirc
Silver Crusade

I saw this thread in the archives and had to call it back from its grave, as I have a monk NPC that I'm working on and I was curious if there had been a compilation of the known monastic schools of the Inner Sea.

Thanks for the work done. You're helping me to narrow down my selection process. So, with that said, allow me to add two more to the list:

Spoiler:
The Cloisters of Renchurch, once a Pharasmin monastery, is the spiritual heart of the Whispering Way. In addition to the scholars and arcanists that seek to unlock the secrets of unlife, there are monks present as well, doing their part to help how they can. These Renchurch Novitiates, as they're called, are trained in the controversial art of stealing ki from they're opponents, and thus have the hungry ghost archetype. They're in Carrion Crown part 6, Shadows of Gallowspire on pg. 25.

There is also the Silent Shroud that enforces the laws of the port city of Nisroch in Nidal. Their agents, called Silent Enforcers (so-called because of the medical procedure that they undergo to render them mute), are a brutal and violent bunch of monks (they are actually called monks in the text). They are listed in the Inner Sea World Guide on pg. 136.

More on the Silent Shroud:

Also the Silent Shroud monks have their base on the smallest island of the Highs in Nisroch. They are very probably LE, being abducted, tortured and brainwashed into absoulute servitude. They probably venerate Zon Kuthon. They never wear armor of weapons and master a pain touch technique.

The master of the order is the mysterious Shrouded One, who is noted to have unlesahed a powerful spell to transform several captive Desna worshiper to stone (the Screaming Wall)

Also there's a few reformed LG ex-Silent Shroud monks in the city - the Unsilenced - who seek to abduct/liberate their ex-brethren and de-program them. They work together with the Whispered Song the Desnan underground

The source for this all is of course Cities of Golarion.

There is also the Brotherhood of the Seal, in Kaer Maga.

These are monks dedicated to guarding a mysterious, sealed portal beneath the city.

They get a new Prestige Class in Paths of Prestige.

Hi all, sorry to necro, but I though it might be easier to ask here than start a whole new thread:

Is there any more info on the Ouat monks than on the wiki? There's not much to go on there. I couldn't find anything in the Guide to Organized Play either.

There's not likely to be much on them. From the Ask James Jacobs thread:

James Jacobs wrote:
1) The name "Ouat Caste" sounds too much like "outcast" to me, and as such I've always been pretty unimpressed with this element. It'll likely continue to get underplayed or ignored in the future.

:[ oh well they're really only a stepping stone for the backstory I'm writing for my druid. They did seem interesting though!
