Lilith glances up at the three groaners approaching from the north, she estimates they will be on her in under 30 seconds now. She notes there are no chains or weapons on those zombies.

Her attention on the danger in the alley, her arcane blast of positive energy flashes between her and the nearest zombie, slamming in to its back and causing a large portion of its torso to vaporise
-4 for shooting in to melee but 15 is still a hit!
Her words carry to the living combatants in the alleyway, but for one it is too late.
The elven woman is able to capitalise on Lilith's spell, avoiding the zombie's swinging arms despite her tiredness. The dwarf continues to swing his axe one-handed, scoring no hits but managing to fend off the zombies trying to get at him as he tries to reach his companions. The human man is not so lucky, lacking the strength to lift his blade in time to block, a zombie arm comes crashing down on his shoulder, causing his knees to buckle. As he loses his balance, the other zombie next to him grabs him and falls on top of him, grappling him to the floor.

Kaiya nods at Polonius with a too serious expression, clutching her crossbow tightly she moves to the stairs and aims at the doorway as the others leave.

Azmerai, Polonius and Shomari all charge up the stairs and out the front door, with Lenneth meeting them there and running out after them. Their excellent hearing isn't needed as before they can even get five paces they see Lilith level her arm and fire off a dazzling bolt of white light in to the alleyway next to the shop. Up the street they can see the other three zombies approaching, and as they move up to Lilith, they see the scene in the alleyway unfolding. It is evident that the alleyway itself is the cause of the screams, as the elven woman cries out in fear, watching her friend go down under a zombie's weight.

You estimate if you ran for the door to the stable, you would reach it at the same time as the 3 zombies approaching from the north

As Lenneth surveys the scene in front of her, she realizes that things look grim for all of them if something isn't done in a hurry. In her desperation, she taps into a power that she hadn't realized was there - suddenly, it all seems so clear! She turns toward the three groaners approaching down the street and focuses on the earth in front of them. The ground suddenly turns to slippery mud and rock, impeding movement for anyone or anything attempting to cross.

Using the Swamp's Grasp hex, which has the following description: One 10-foot square per witch level within 90 feet becomes difficult terrain for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the witch's Intelligence modifier. If the witch uses this hex again before the duration of the previous use has expired, the effects of the previous use of this hex end immediately. Lenneth will attempt to slow down at least two of the three groaners by affecting the squares in front of them.

Polonius moves forward, (one square) deftly reaching into his belt pouch and taking a pinch of sulphur. He drops it into a flask which immediately starts to fizz.

He hurls it at the zombie attacking the human man and engulfs both it and the zombie beside with fire.

Precise bomb, zombie in J2: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 6 - 4 = 19
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 1) + 3 = 9

Zombie in K2 takes 5 damage unless it passes a DC 14 reflex save. The elf is excluded from the splash radius.

Shomari's speartip carves a large chunk of shoulder from the zombie menacing the elven girl, combined with the damage Lilith's spell did moments ago it is enough to cause the body to collapse on the floor, unmoving.

Lilith fires off another bolt of white light, this time aiming for the closest zombie menacing the dwarf, the energy sizzles through the air and dances across the zombie's arm, sparking as it goes.

Azmerai almost flies across the intervening space between him and his foe, red mist fully descended, his halberd swings in a massive arc, impacting the zombie so hard he cuts completely through the walking corpse and it ceases its attacks as its two parts twitch on the floor.

Lenneth's spontaneously manifesting powers come in the nick of time, shadows flit across the ground, deepening in a large patch in front of the approaching trio. Their steps become leaden and slow, like the ground itself is holding on to their footsteps and refusing to let go. She has bought significant time for the group with this tactic.

Polonius' bomb lands exactly on the zombie attacking the man, lighting it up briefly in alchemical flames, and causing the other zombie's remaining hair to burn off along with the skin on the left side of its body.
I moved Polonius closer than you posted, please see the discussion thread, we can correct next map update if necessary

Unfortunately it's not enough to prevent the zombie atop the human warrior from biting down on his unprotected neck, causing blood to spray in an arc against the stable wall. The elven woman screams in rage and pain, reaching down and trying to pull the zombie off the human. The zombie standing beside her takes advantage of this and swings its arm, smashing it savagely in to her skull, dropping her to the ground.

The dwarf is panting for breath, but seems to take heart that you are here to help, he swings his axe and now he's not on the defensive, manages to score a hit on the zombie's leg. Undaunted it swings a heavily rotted arm, trailing disintegrating cloth, impacting the dwarf solidly in his already injured ribs. He looks pale, but he's still standing, just.

perception DC 16:
At Lilith's repeated use of her 'bright bolt of light' spell, the zombie's in the alley turned their heads slightly in her direction. When you think about this in later moments it strikes you as rather odd, as the groaners tend to ignore eveything but movement and light, or what's in front of them at the time. This was something different, you can feel it in your bones.

You are distracted momentarily from noises coming from the stables. Polonius, Azmerai and Shomari get a bad feeling about the contents of that building, given the amount of noise there is in the alleyway now...

Move to square F4 and cast Ear-Piercing Scream against the zombie in K2. The zombie takes 1d6 sonic damage and is dazed for one round unless it makes a DC 14 Fort save, which will negate the dazed effect and halve the damage.

Um. Glad you guys are here to help, but I do hope someone closed the door to the shop... Lilith says in a worried voice.

Polonius' bomb bursts on the feasting zombie's back, incinerating it completely and leaving only charred remains behind, a glimpse at the human underneath shows eyes staring in to nothing, as blood pools around the fresh corpse.

Azmerai moves to the other zombie by the fallen elven woman, swinging his polearm and destroying the ribcage, ending the undead instantly.

corrected movement as I3 would not have put you in range of a Z

Lilith takes careful aim and her spell does indeed cause the remaining zombie in the alley to move their head towards her momentarily, then the spell energy smaches in to its shoulder.

Shomari dashes across the cobbles, ending his sprint with a spinning spearhead jabbed in to the remaining zombie's face, the tip comes away covered in gore, but the zombie is still up!

corrected movement as only one zombie remaining

The zombie's eyes focus on the foe in front of it and it raises both arms in a mighty blow that will surely mean death to the dwarf, when suddenly its body rocks, shivering, before it simply collapses in front of you. You notice Lenneth standing near Polonius and Lilith, mouth still open from her spell.

Polonius runs ahead of the group as well as he is able and starts hammering on the workshop door.

Turrey, Kaiya - let us in we have wounded here!

Sorry Polonius can't take 10 on the heal check as you're in a stressful situation at present

As far as Polonius can tell, the elven woman is unconscious and not bleeding anywhere obvious.

Azmerai glances at the elven woman as he drags the human man past her and Polonius, she has a sling tucked in her belt which has two empty dagger sheathes on it, but was fighting with a club.

Shomari's greater experience with combat wounds holds true, and he is able to determine that the elf's skull has been crushed either by the zombie's arm or the impact with the ground. Either way, she's gone.

Lilith's spell causes a pouch hanging from the elf's belt to glow, as well as the dwarf's belt.

The dwarf is reacting slowly, he stares at Lenneth and visibly flinches when she touches him. It's likely he was running on sheer willpower alone until the warmth of the spell infuses him. It looks like years have been taken off of him. He looks in to Lenneth's eyes, and his are almost brimming with tears Thank ye lass he nods briefly to her. He glances behind her, then grabs her elbow and breaks in to a trot to follow everyone else round the corner back to the shop.

You can now all see another half dozen groaners spill out of the stable doors, but thankfully become mired in Lenneth's summoned bog. The door opens in front of you, Kaiya's crossbow is pointed hurriedly away as she confirms it's you and moves back to sit on the stairs again.

Once everyone is in and the door secured, the dwarf glances around, before shrugging off his pack and crouching down, back against the wall and axe across his knees.

Ye must be decent folk, helping out strangers like that, I owe ye me life he nods gratefully.

Me name's Xand, the elf was Phen, known her a coupla weeks. Yon man was new to us, said he was Murzen. Not that it matters now he sighs

Least I can do is split their things with you, they don't need 'em no more. Whadd'ya say?

Two questions: Are we dealing with traditional horror movie zombies, such that the elf's crushed skull will prevent her rising? Or is her corpse still a threat? Aaaaand does it appear that all the groaners are out of the stable?

Shomari helps Azmerai drag the elf inside, and then quickly returns to the basement. He replaces the supports on the tunnel and crawls through to the stable, climbing up to the trap door and stealing a peek through.

Polonius moves beside Kaiya and gives the young girl a wink as if to say; No problem!

Lillith, the Groaners don't have any memory, do they? What I mean is, just leading them away from the trapdoor will be enough. They won't remember it's there to try and get in?

In the months since the Red Harvest, Polonius has sought to understand the process of zombification, the wounds the creatures themselves inflict and the behaviour of the disease. Because by now he is convinced it is a disease. At one time he believed that every disease had a cure. But Amelia's deterioration and the Bleaching made him question everything.

In questions of the nature of the creatures themselves and whether they retained any of their former memories and cognitive reasoning - he deferred to Lillith's superior knowledge every time.

As he awaits her answer he casts nervous glances at the staircase, waiting for Shomari to return.

"You're welcome...I'm sorry that we couldn't save the others," Lenneth says quietly.

Though I guess that's two less mouths to have to share the food with.

"I'm Lenneth. These others are my companions, though we've only been together for a short time as well. The child is Kaiya; her family apparently owned this shop before everything went to hell. That's about the long and the short of it - what about you?"

It is mid-afternoon at present

What you know about the dead rising phenomenon: Bodies rise within a couple of hours after death, unless you coup de grace them by injuring the body so much it cannot reanimate, the favourite method, because it is easiest, is to damage the brain, this is well known by now to prevent re-animation, though no-one is entirely clear why, all the research facilities and attendant staff having been eaten...alternate methods include separating the head from the body, or else doing enough sheer damage to the corpse that whatever is animating it simply doesn't have enough to work with anymore and expires.

Shomari checks the elf's skull, it has been caved in enough that re-animation is not on the cards. You think back and recall there were seven groaners inside the stable, you only saw six come out, but then again you're back inside now so no way to tell. There's too many thumps, bumps and groans on the doors to distinguish how many are outside right now either. The tunnel didn't have too much damage done to it, you are able to repair the support planks fairly quickly. Peeking up through the trapdoor, you hear moaning, a glance around shows you that one of the zombies broke enough bones in its fall from the top floor that it is having issues moving. It snarls and snaps from a crumpled heap on the floor.

If he was any less strong then he wouldn't have been able to do it on his own, it looks very much like these doors have not been shut in weeks. Walking back to the groaner, he despatches it will a single thrust to the soft part of the skull, and the thing stops moving.

perception DC 18:

If neither of you make the roll then...

the office:
Is now empty...there is a desk with papers scattered on it, a couple of drawers tha tlook as though they have already been rifled through, a flimsy looking dagger has the broken condition has been stabbed in to the desk in one corner. There is a window but it is filthy and is barely letting any light in at all.

Xand looks surprised at Lilith's remarks about the bridge 'guards' and weapons on biters.

Well lass, I didnae see anythin' like tha' in Magnimar, or twixt here and there fer that matter. We came in fro' the South, the Coast Road, tried ta circle roun' San'Point ta see if'n it were safe or nae. We struck out fer the source of the smoke ya see, the fire like ye say He points at Lenneth. Yon smoke goes up high an' wide, if'n it's a fire then issa big'un.

We swam o'er the river an got to a pier, i' looked like a lummer mill. Went house ta house til we foun' a grain mill, open'd the door an were set upon almos' straigh'away, nae seen the biters wi' the chains afore now but theh came pourin' outta there like they ben waitin' fer us. Sorry I cannae help further. I didnae know San'Point afore now either, just knew an it were here an' hoped there were summit ter salvage, you know.

He puts his axe down and reaches in to his pack, taking a sip from the nearly empty waterskin in there.

I've nae spoken this much in weeks, strange eh? Se what about ye folk? Ye seem fair familiar wi' each other, ye been here long yerselves?

Looking around at the group running off in different directions Lilith comments. Oh my. I do n to know why everyone is running off. Perhaps we should regroup and give everyone an update on what is going on.

I do not think Lilith even knows the extend of the tunnels and where they lead.

Polonius helps Shomari search and takes the poorly-crafted dagger.

Beggars can't be choosers. he says up at the warrior. I think this place is safe for now, if we keep expanding from here to the inn and maybe the shops beyond we might be able to move around a good chunk of the town unseen. Let's tell the others.

Polonius returns to the armory and relays the layout of the tunnels and stables. He confirms that the tunnel continues to the inn although the door is barred from within.

I say we rest a little here and then try to get into the Inn. We found some barrels of ale but our food situation has not improved. I agree the fact these zombies are being controlled is not only unusual but really concerning and there's still the issue of the fire. But there's nothing we can do about either quite yet so I say we deal with more concrete issues like our next meal for now. What do we think?

Agreed. says Lilith. We should try to secure each building so that if the zombies, or anyone else who might prove to be our enemy, cannot easily move from one to the other. And lets face it, we now know that someone or something is using these undead as weapons.

When she sees the damaged dagger she offers to repair it. I have the Mending spell memorized today so can fix that in a relatively short time. 10 minutes should do it.

Seeing Lilith magically repairing the dagger, Turrey feels again the heavy absence of his connection to the Song of the Spheres. I used to be special like that, for a little while...

Shaking his head, he resolves it's time to get out of the funk that's kept him quiet the last while, and make something of himself. Father Sevrille wouldn't just be stuck here, indecisive, scared, would he? Desna, why didn't he survive instead of me?

"Nice work there, Lilith. That's handy." he says. "Let me make myself handy too, for something other than sharing wandermeals! Now that we've got a bit more breathing room, why don't I see if I can get into that locked panel? Then when the others come back up from the basement, I agree. It's time to compare notes and make a plan."

This should have been in yesterday's post, tricky cut and paste! Lilith has indeed completed her scribing, you can add the scroll and minus the scroll components from your inventory

Azmerai checks out the state of the stables, there is a lot of dank and mouldy straw in the stalls, and the walls are pretty drafty, but overall it seems pretty sturdy. The main door Shomari closed is pretty large, each of those double doors being 10 ft long, and it is only secured by a beam dropped across it. There are a few knotholes in the front door that you use to peek outside, the ground has returned to normal now, whatever Lenneth did to it appears to have worn off. There is a group of groaners gathered outside the shop, banging on the door, but nothing else of note in the vicinity you can see.

perception DC 14 for anyone looking around the stalls:
Whilst searching the stalls you find a half rotted pack. Whilst the pack itself is useless and disintegrates as you pick it up, in it you find a small red gemstone, an uncut blue gemstone, a vial of clear liquid and a bird folded out of paper.

Turrey does not believe there are any traps on the safe, however his improvised tools are unable to click home and the plate remains stubbornly shut.

Kaiya is using one of the charcoal sticks to draw in the corner, Xand is just resting on the floor, seeming to just enjoy the luxury of not being on guard 24/7.

Azmerai winks to Shomandi and Polonius. "We gather here, clevers use magic, brawnies storm out and kill rest. We then have again a little less to worry about and can go outside to check inn."
Can one take 20 to pick a lock?

Check. Since she kept the silver dagger she only had enough components for that lone scroll iirc. She has 8-10 sheets of appropriate parchment and has quills in her inventory, but now lacks the special inks. That is what I will track and she must find or concoct.

Polonius, I would like to discuss the finer points of arcane inks with you at some point. I have a small sample of one here, though it is not enough to scribe another scroll. I could use your expertise in both mixing up more inks and in finding the components to do so.

We are now outside the guidance of the rules. In most games the actual components are abstracted into simply having he gold pieces to scribe the scrolls. I can imagine a rule set where the higher the spell level the more rare the ingredients for inks become, or even a table listing specific ingredients for each spell. Ashes for fire spells, etc.

Lilith, I will wait for some clarification from Fiendish before Polo responds.

Everyone, I would guess we have around 5 hours of daylight left. Azmerai wants to clear the zombies in the street so that we can more easily get into the Inn and I think we can take them all without issue if we rush them. We know that the basement door is barred but perhaps we should try breaking in before risking the street. he scratches at the blue and white stubble growing on his chin.

But then if there are biters inside, shoulder-barging the door will most definitely alert them and they could then have a clear route back into the barn and finally here. Seems risky either way. But the inn is probably the best bet for food immediately around here.

He thinks it over a little more.

I say we clear the street. At least after that we can try to look in through the windows and get a better idea of what's going on in there.

Lilith looks worried. What? There are 6 or more beating on our door right now? And I seem to attack them now. Did you see how the glared at me when I used my magic? I literally never want to open that door again, unless we are leaving this place forever. I hope that the biters forget its a door. And there are more biters that that in the street. We just lost 2 people to biters in that ally and now you want to go out. She looks shaken at the idea.

Are you talking about the basement door in the Inn? Lilith knows nothing about anything past her side of the tunnel below. If the door is barred perhaps our rogue can do something about it. Oh, and about that. I am pretty sure rogues can take 20 on locks if they have time, so he should try that with a take 20 on the locked panel.
