Edrik's blow cuts cleanly through the ghost sending his spirit flying into pieces. The last of the five ghosts ends without a whimper.

A quick search of the room spies a few items of worth at the bottom of the water filled pit- assuming a detect magic is cast you note a ack longsword, dagger, and ring on the body of the wizard.

Without a problem, you manage to make it back upstairs to the room which Vesorianna's ghost is held. She greets you.

Shel pockets the magic items, intent on letting Awarna and the others study them at their convenience.

Stepping to the ghost of the warden's wife, Shel gives her the good news. "Ma'am, I think we have disposed of all five of the evil spirits. What else is required for us to finally give you peace?"

A tear forms on her ghostly cheek as she hovers over the badge. The tear drops onto the badge. She picks it up, or at least a ghostly facsimile, and pins it to her smock. This is all that I needed. Thank you. I'm able to take over my husbands job, and lock the ghosts away now. She reaches into her smock and pulls forth a large keyring, laden with keys of all shapes and sizes.

She hovers a moment, turns I hope you can bring peace or vengeance for your lost friend. I won't ask you to find my husband's soul- but if you do happen to free him, tell him that I'll see him on the other side. You should have no more reason to fear the denizens of Harrowstone nevermore.

She drifts off through the wall to lock away the spirits for good.

The badge sits on the floor where you left it with a thin layer of frost melting from the ghost's frigid touch. It glitters with a silver gleam.

Spellcraft DC20 + detect magic:
The badge, when held, can act as a rod of lesser ectoplasmic metamagic (3 uses per day).

Assuming you don't have any more poking to do around the prison, the adventure is over and you can return to the Professor's house. Kendra is still holed up on the grounds, safe. You have three more weeks before the Professor's payment (and delivery of the books to Lepistdat) occur.

The usually gloomy weather clears, albeit briefly, and the town feels like a great weight has been lifted. The villagers smile at the party for the first time. At one point, the sherif approaches and hands your group a small pouch containing 250 gold in thanks.

Please level your characters. Congrats!

Garin's first order of business is to have a nice, long, hot bath.

Garin then continues to spend his time with Kendra when it is welcome, acting as friend and guard, and to train his falcon with her assistance.

I previously succeeded on a previous check for training my falcon for a general purpose, but I think I've changed my mind and have decided to teach it individual tricks. With only two weeks before we leave, I wouldn't make it in time to finish teaching the falcon. May I pick out one trick to have it already learn from the previous success?

Tricks only take one week to teach and use a single handle animal check. It's fine if that's not possible. I'll just abandon the previous check, and start on teaching it new tricks. I'll do Fetch, Deliver, and Get Help.

Shel will work on trying to change some of the insular feelings of the villagers. She spend a good chunk of time in the bars and inns, hoping she might be able to make the town more friendly for the next group of strangers to come through. She also will speak with Kendra, and share as many memories of the Professor as Kendra was comfortable with.

Awnara brings back the spellbook she found in Harrowstone, and shows it to Kendra at the earliest opportunity. "My magic is different enough that I can't use these, but we might be able to scavenge it for useful writings. If I supply you with the materials, maybe you could make us some scrolls of the more useful ones!" She spends her time going over the Professor's texts, learning what she can about magic, undead, and Ustalav in general.

What's in the book, DM? And can Kendra help us out and scribe some scrolls?

I misread Awarna's post and inserted the word scrolls in place of the spellbook reference she made. The scrolls found could be used by Gilda.

Chapter 2: Trial of the Beast

The journey to Lepidstat

The journey is roughly 100 miles to the capital of the Vieland Province. Lepidstat is a center for education- a city on the rise known for it's university, at which the Professor once taught.

Kendra plans to make the journey in the comfort of the Manor's coach. One of the players should serve as coach driver. Any of the PCs can choose to ride in (or on) the carriage, or separately with their own mounts. The journey will take several days- there are inns scattered about the road, but there may need to be a camp or two if one is not available.

The city of Lepidstadt is currently the scene
of intense local excitement. The dreaded Beast of
Lepidstadt—a terrifying abomination that has terrorized
the people of Vieland for years—has been captured.
Hundreds of people have f locked to the city hoping to catch
a glimpse of the horror and watch it burn for its crimes.

When you arrive, you have two tasks- deliver the purple covered book to Judge Daramind at her residence, and the chest of books to Dr. Cowl at the university. Judge Daramind will disperse the inheritance from the will.

I miss typed- you do not get the 100 pp until you arrive and meet the judge.

Is it possible to hitch my mount to the coach, and serve as the coach driver myself? Otherwise, I'll have to ride on my mount, and no one else seems capable of serving as coach driver (i.e. no one else took the Ride skill).

Despite her abysmal luck with carriages, Awnara elects to ride inside. When she gets out, she looks up at the sprawling edifices of Lepidstadt, including the dark buildings that make up the campus. "Lepidstadt University," she breathes in wonder. "Can you believe the Professor taught here? I wish I made the journey to see him before he passed - it looks wondrous!" With a genuine excitement, she looks to Shel. "Yes! That's my thoughts as well! What do you think about this Beast? Do you think they've really got it at last?"

Midway through the second day of the journey you come upon a hand painted sign beside the road. "The Crooked Kin- half mile ahead."

Around the bend you see a caravan of brightly colored wagons with a number of figures milling about.

You're hailed in return.
A tall, gaunt man dressed in a worn pinstripe suit of purple and green velvet, which looks as though it was pulled from a costume party two generations ago, approaches and draws a dramatic arm toward a sign hanging among the 9 wagons.

The sign reads: “The Crooked Kin— Ustalav’s Greatest Traveling Cabinet of Curiosities!”

"Welcome lords and ladies to the greatest show in Ustalav! I am Kaleb, the ringleader of this little troupe of curiosities. We would normally regale you with all of our wonders- but, unfortunately, we're dealing with a small crisis at the moment." He nods his head toward a pair of small, strangle withered-looking girls holding each other and crying. "Their sister Aleece darted off into the woods over an hour ago, and we've been unable to find any trace of her!"

He eyes Garin's armor and Vachordi's handy bow. "We are not as brave as you- and we are ill equipped to canvass these dangerous woods. Could you spare some time to help us? The sisters would be so thankful for your aid."

The crowd lines up- an immense bearded lady, the two strange little girls, a pin headed man, a hugely ugly Ulfen man nearly 8 feet tall, and a motley dressed trio of men with odd extra limbs (legs and arms) look to you hopefully.
