As the spring solstice rolled closer, the local Toadlicker goblins became unusually aggressive. They somehow acquired fireworks and were using them to attack travelers on the road. After the events of previous years, and considering the current absence of the 'Heroes of Sandpoint' the populace of the sleepy town of Sandpoint grew nervous. As the recently arrived young cleric of Gozreh, a Samrasan called Taize Vesper, celebrated Firstbloom, the skies over the Brinestump Marsh were lit by a massive round of colorful explosions.

The rumormill is overactive, and the response from Magnimar that one of Sheriff Hemlock's deputies brought back was not encouraging. Magnimar seems to feel that the incidents are too minor for them to send a troop. Several young folks have already tried sneaking out to find the goblins, only to be stopped by the guards.

Daviren Hosk, goblin-hating owner of the Goblin Squash Stables, is currently seated in the Rusty Dragon Tavern, ranting about the lack of effort the Sheriff and the mayor seem to be putting out to exterminate the little menaces.

Most of the travelers are probably staying in the Rusty Dragon and the locals often stop by as well. The large room (with the piano) at the top of the stairs is Ameiko's.

Minor Astronomical Nit:
There's no such thing as a spring solstice. The beginning of astronomical spring is the vernal or spring equinox; the beginning of astronomical summer is the summer solstice. OK, now that I've gotten that out of my system, on to the good stuff.

A tall shaven-headed Vudrani enters the tavern as Hosk is getting into his rant. From the light sheen of sweat on his dusky skin, it's likely that Ikshvaku has just come from the House of Blue Stones. He signals one of the waitstaff for something to drink and listens to the stable owner as he waits. "Indeed yes, my father sent me here to look into the matter, for he has lost two caravans from Galduria. In a few weeks, when the Yondabakari has settled down, it will not be so important, but it is a bad precedent. Like you, Master Hosk, I am troubled by the lack of effort by the authorities. Perhaps we have grown too dependent on the Heroes, yes?"

A small figure had been seated at a table in the dining room at the Rusty Dragon since dawn, a stack of books had been his only companion in that time. He wore a white cloak over his head even though he was inside and his backpack leaned against his chair like a loyal dog. He had been poking at a stack of cornmeal griddlecakes which he had ordered for in a small tenor voice for some time, but progress had increased since the discovery of maple syrup.

A rickety-looking old Vudrani sits at the bar, sipping at water and chatting amicably with Ameiko in halting Tien. His face is weathered, and darkened by years in the sun. His long white hair tied back in a knot, his beard braided together as well. His clothes are well-kept, and very simple.

He nods sympathetically at Hosk's grievances.

"Perhaps the Sheriff is not keen to send his men charging blindly into the swamp to their deaths, yes? Haste and hurry undercut the efforts of the patient, and bogs are not a welcoming place. Especially those home to goblins of unknown numbers with blades of eager sharpness."

"A solution will present itself, have patience and faith."

"Truth is always hard for the impatient."

The speaker is another Vudran monk of Irori, who has been visiting various holy sites on what he describes as both pilgrimage for himself and training for his young protege, Braydon Chem. Anyone who's been at the House of Blue Stones would recognize either of them.

Spiral, should I assume Kayosin is in town between caravan gigs for Sandru? Until I hear otherwise, I'll assume as much.

Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8. Nope.

Kayosin looks up from his favorite table in the Dragon. The corner circular table next to the bar was as close to perfect as he could imagine. Enough darkness to make Kayosin feel comfortable. Close enough to the bar to be able to easily get a drink or eavesdrop on conversations. The fact that no one could be at his back was obviously a bonus, and the window between himself and the big hearth gave him an angle to look outside and space out when he wanted to… not to mention an avenue of escape should something go wrong. He shakes his head at that last thought. His appearance had always kept him cautious in public, but the last few years of traveling had made him seem downright paranoid.

He idly spins his room key between gloved fingers. Between this table and his favored room upstairs, the Dragon was as much a home as Kayosin had. Every time he came into town he considered trying to buy back the Old Man's shack, but it was just too painful. Plus, he never seemed to stay in town long enough to really invest, anyway.

Hosk's rant bring him back to the moment, and Kayosin slips his key back into his pocket, also using the moment to close his journal. He adjusts the smoked goggles that rest on his head as the foreigners' discussion demands his immediate attention. Despite his natural inclination, he intrudes on the discussion.

"Maybe, but Hosk has a right to his frustration. From what I hear, it's not been an easy time lately for anyone in town. Their heroes have done some good apparently, but those goblins have always been a pest at best… more of an abomination and plague on the town as often as not, though."

When the three men look over, they see a youngish man of medium height and build clothed from neck to boots – even his hands are gloved. The skin of his face is dusky, and his hair is long, dark, and unkempt with a pair of dark goggles strapped on top. His eyes at first look all black… like a half-orc's. But as they switch from Vudrani to Vudrani, they seem to pool the low light of the window, pool it, and reflect it back with a yellow-orange glow.

Kayosin lapses into silence as the men look over at him, forcing himself not to shrug uncomfortably at the attention.

Sorry for the late post - work.

The Dragon's kitchen door is shoved open and a tall non-gnomish gnome pushes through the gap bearing a circular platter of what appears to be scrambled duck eggs riding atop a layer of razor clams in their shells. He sets the meal down on the bar and leaps onto the high stool, near Kayosin's table, wiping his hands vigorously on his soiled apron.

The gnome is an odd character. He possesses few of the typical traits of his race. His hair is long and black, not some vivid color. His skin is pale. And surrounding his normal-sized mouth is a neatly trimmed goatee. He looks more like a miniature human mixed with something else than a gnome. Straehan rubs his hands together and inspects the crowd to see if anyone is intrigued by his latest culinary triumph.

With a flourish he slides back his sleeves and pulls a steaming mollusk topped with egg and slides the whole thing, minus the shell, down his throat. He nearly heaves as he chews, his face contorting. "Oh. Oh. This tastes like ass... in an old boot!" He swallows with effort and grabs another one.

Around a second mouthful of the abomination, he mumbles, "Gawww! Worse the second time around..." Strae waves the platter in Kayosin's direction with a pained smile and a polite offer, "Wanna try one?"

The court elf was troubled. Matters of the heart were never easy. So he found himself in Sandpoint trying to impress the legendary ranger Shalelu. The tales of her greatness had spread farther from Sandpoint than anyone could imagine. They even reached the jaded elf uncertain what to do with his life and looking like he was on the outs with his domineering parents. A couple of trips to visit people who had met the ranger firsthand only encouraged his ambitions. So when his parents went to his room, they found a note in Elven that said simply: "I had to go see about a girl..."

Source of quote

Hunting goblins--always a noble goal. I bet that would impress Shalelu.

The comely elf strode into the Rusty Dragon, a golden cat followed quickly behind. The cat and the elf shared eyes sparkling with intelligence and matching runes on their forehead. As the elf removed his traveling coat, it was obvious he was used to someone taking his coat, but he recovers quickly and hangs it up himself. Although dressed simply in woodland colors and simple wool and leather, it is obvious his clothes were custom and well made.

As the coat is hung up, the elf and cat make their way to the bar as the elf pronouces, "Erastil's blessing upon you."

During the current dialogue, the small figure had casually brought out some paper from his backpack. His eyes never leaving his book, he also brought out an ink vial and pen and began taking notes. The book he was reading was by Brodert Quink, concerning ancient Thassalon.

To those who could read Thassalonian, he writing a combination of notes concerning his book, and upside down on the same page he would write the dialogue of those speaking in the tavern with notes attached, demarking poor grammar, breaches of etiquette, particular accents and unknown colloquial phrases, mostly from the gnome cook.

His only diversion from his book was a hoot of warning coming from outside before anyone entered the Rusty Dragon, given from a coal black owl on the outside. His head would register the noise, mark the paper in a tally and return to his book. Some would consider this behavior a bit strange or suspicious, but he had been at it for the better part of a week now, and had not gotten in anyone's way, so most people considered him as benign as Quink when he was in town.

Kamath ignores the elf and his creature to concentrate on the young man.”Please. And stay calm. That is obviously not a normal creature, and obviously under control. I think it might do you good, Chem, if you stayed at the House of Blue Stones to meditate.”

Sheriff Hemlock enters the Rusty Dragon and heads over to the Rusty Dragon's bulletin board. He posts a notice, then turns to the crowd.

”Given the situation, Mayor Deverin and the Sandpoint Merchant Association have chosen to reinstate the goblin bounty. 10 gold for every left goblin ear you turn in and 300 gold for the head of the Licktoad's Chief Ripnugget. If you plan on entering the marsh, register at the Garrison so we know who's out there. If you're under age you must have your parents written permission. No other bounties will be offered” here he pauses to shoot a glare at Daviren Hosk. ”or honored.”

Sri Kamath looks up at the interruption. ”Hm. Chem. This is an excellent opportunity. Go out on this bounty hunt. Practice your skills and your control. It is time you faced the world, rather than hiding within yourself and the church.”

M

At the interruption, the small figure claps the bag at his belt, finding it to have a disturbing lack of jingle. Books were expensive. The last bit of griddlecake disappears and the books begin to shut and be stowed back in the faithful backpack before the Sheriff finishes his speech. The white cloak snakes through the crowd and toward the door.

The old man claps his hands together and nods.

"It is the burden of the old to guide the young when they are so willing to run off and fight and die, yes? I will happily join, my young friend."

Kayosin guardedly takes in the elf and the cat. "Not sure about control. But they're clearly connected arcanically. The runes." He gives a reserved smile, "As to which of them is the master… it's anyone's guess."

At Hemlock's appearance, Kayosin's face goes blank, and he stands. He waits while the notice is posted and the announcement is given, and – as Hemlock turns to leave – Kayosin tries and fails to get the man's attention. He watches Hemlock leave with a look of frustration, then slides his chair back in and heads to the counter across from the gnome.

Perception DC 13:
You think you saw a tail move within the folds of Kayosin's cloak. You would have spotted it earlier had he not been sitting.

He fishes out a few coins, sliding them across the bar. "For the earlier meal. Will you make sure Ameiko gets them? And, if you're going to stick around here a bit longer, will you let her know I still don't know how long I'll be staying. Thanks. No word from Sandru yet on when his caravan's headed back out of town." He frowns as he looks through the door through which Hemlock exited, apparently continuing an earlier conversation*. "I guess Hemlock thinks he can avoid our usual chat. Imagine that." He looks back at Straehan, "You gonna be around later? Or, better yet, you gonna help them with their goblin hunt?" He winks at the gnome, "Gnomes hate goblins, right?"

Kayosin follows the Vudrani merchant, the old man, and the young Braydon out, though not necessarily leaving with them. (Assuming you guys head over to the Garrison. kayo's really headed to interview/annoy Hemlock, but it might appear that he's going with the group… plus, it moves things along together nicely.)

* I figure it's likely (given that Strae has been in town a while) Straehan would know that Kayosin visits the Sherriff every time he hits town. It's no secret that Kayosin goes to him on every such occasion and interviews him about the murder of the Old Man, petitioning every time for new information or that Hemlock re-open the case or have it investigated further. Not having enough money to get a real investigator, Kayosin can't really pay to have it officially reopened. I'm sure Hemlock would be beyond annoyed by this behavior, but in a way I guess it's a testament to Kayosin's stubborn resolve.

Spiral:
I figure that Kayosin isn't initially motivated to go hunting goblins. But maybe Hemlock will suggest that enough gold (of which Kayosin has little) could hire a proper investigator until Sandpoint's law enforcement is back to capacity. Maybe he would suggest Kayosin go hunt goblins for gold and (at the very least) to get him some favor with the town garrison. Either way, it would get Kayosin out of Hemlock's office... which I'm guessing Hemlock would appreciate. :D

As he left the Rusty Dragon, the owl perched on the inn took flight, soared through the air and flapped furiously to land on the top of Fulanke's head. The dark colored owl bobbed his head at the new people around him, looking with wide eyes at each of them, moving his head as if he was making conversation. No, he can't read mind (yet, anyway). But his Sense motive and Perception are top notch, so he might have noted your studying his stance. Or it might have been a thanks for the invitation, with a snub tossed at Samal.

No problem; I didn't know how familiar you were with the board conventions...and given the characters we have here, it's quite possible you really *were* reading his mind; I was asking so I would know how to rp Vak's reaction. Speaking of board conventions, you know about the ooc tag for out-of-character comments? Turns text blue (like my post above, or like this), so it's obvious what's a player statement vs. a character statement.

Ishkvaku gives his countryman's student a long, intent look before bowing in greeting to him, as well. "I am pleased to meet you. And I see there is a small crowd interested in the Sheriff's offer. We can all go together. If we are very lucky they will be competent...but not so much so that we are left with nothing to do but watch them, yes? Entertaining, but not a proper test of one's skills. I have had to do that too often where Mother is involved." The Vudrani pauses on the way out of the Rusty Dragon to pick up and replace a shade that's fallen off of one of the tavern's oil lamps. At one point, Kayosin thinks he makes eye contact with Sumiso, and he nods. He'd seen the little guy around Koya a time or two, and Koya seemed to enjoy the relationship (which was a point in the little guy's favor in Kayosin's book), but that was about all he knew of the little book-reader.

As they approach the garrison, Kayosin begins mentally running through which questions he'll throw at the sheriff on this trip.

Spiral, unless you think it's beneficial to the plot or game, I don't knwo that it's necessary to actually RP out the conversation between Kayosin and Hemlock. To me, it's just an in-character way for Kayosin to be in the garrison with the rest of the group, while hopefully giving Hemlock a reason to send Kayosin specifically with the group. If there's more to it than that from your perspective, I'm happy either way. :)

Braydon catches up just as the group reaches the Garrison.

Sheriff Hemlock looks up, at first pleased to see the group, then sighs as he recognizes Kayosin.

"Are you folks here about the bounty? Excellent. One moment, please."

He opens a desk drawer and pulls out a sheaf of papers, which he hads to Kayosin. He then pulls out another sheet, with Sandpoint's official seal and hands it to the closest of the group. "This is the offical bounty notice. Sign it on the bottom if you're going."

Kayosin:
The papers are the forms you've seen and reviewed many times, all the information currently available about the old man's death. They include one new sheet, sitting on top. It seems to be a note from Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch that she will ask the Pathfinders to report any observation of the crest he'd sent her.

He comments to Kayosin "That took a bit of pull. You might pay me back by going with this group. You're local and wander, you should be able to guide them around most of the swamp's hazards. I'd also like you to check on Old Megus and 'Warden' Proudstump. No one's seen her for months and he knows more than anyone, except possibly Shalelu, about the marsh."

He turns to the rest of you. "This looks like a large enough group that getting back out in a crisis shouldn't be hard. I recomend that you check with Vesnutt Parooh at The Way North. He may have a few copies of Shalelu's maps of the Brinestump Marsh. I can't provide supplies for you, however, most of the shops in town will have what you need to fill in any gaps. Good luck and good hunting."

Sumisu takes the bounty notice and scans it carefully, but only for a second. The owl reads it too, and bobs his head in agreement. He puts it back on the counter and pulls out an ink pen. Writing on the table is a little difficult as it is a bit high to see, but he manages to do it exactly on the line. Instead of script, he marks his name with two strange symbols which, if you know Tian...

Spoiler:
stand for honesty and crafting.

He offers his pen to the next person in line as they step forward.

The graceful cat uses some ink from the pen to wet a paw print and put a inked paw print on the bounty notice. She then looks disdainfully at the elf behind her. The elf signs the bounty notice AFTER the cat.

Kayosin takes the top sheet, absent-mindedly half-mouthing the words as he reads it. After what must be multiple reads, Kayosin looks up. "I really appreciate this, Sheriff." His intense look is one of somber appreciation as he signs his name to the bottom of the bounty, "I really do. I'll see this through."

As he finishes signing, he notes the strange signatures preceding his own, wondering at their meanings as he steps aside for the next signer. He pushes the curiosity aside to focus on the task ahead.

"I've not spent too much time in the marshes, but I'll certainly do my best assisting the group avoid dangers." He spends a few minutes considering Old Megus and 'Warden' Proudstump, recalling anything he thinks could be helpful about the additional requests from Hemlock. (Knowledge: Local 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 - I don't see either of those people on the Residents doc. Does Kayosin recall anything about either of them that would be helpful/pertinent to their task?)

He smiles over at the gnome as he waits, "Master Straehan, it looks like my message for Ameiko has changed. I'll stop over at the Dragon, pay my room up through a week, and collect my things. If she can hold the room for me, it'd be much appreciated. I'd say I'll keep my eyes open for saffron while we're out, but if I remember correctly, it's not a wild-growing plant, right?"
