GM Zed |
As the friends watch, the crystalline arachnid - seemingly oblivious to Eldar, Symon or anyone else who may seek to communicate - starts to burrow. Within less than a second and accompanied by a tinkling sound that is quickly muffled, it has disappeared beneath a pile of fresh rubble...
So... pursuing the grisly eye creature? It fled into the eastern-most of the northern corridors... Or doing something else?
GM Zed |
I have updated the map to show what Kaspar observed.
Eldar of the Lost |
"I agree. Rushing ahead without any form of information would be a blunder from us"

GM Zed |
Pushing things forwards with a reminder that we should aim for daily posting as far as is possible.
Appearing to concentrate upon the shadows flickering in the passageway that heads to the north, Symon then turns to his friends and informs them that, ”The cavern to the north opens up to much larger cave… apparently there’s a river of magma but the way is not blocked to us, a rock bridge spans the lava – so that’s the good news. The bad news is that the cave is occupied – some kind of gaseous creatures, more than one of them, are floating above the magma… the orb fled beyond them… but then moved out of sight”.
Actions? There are two passageways to the north of where you encountered the crystalline lizard / armoured eye creature… the orb fled into the eastern most of them (and the map has been updated to show what Symon has just informed everyone about).
Symon |
Very sorry guys..just moved and am still waiting for my internet to get hooked up....should be ok for now
I suggest we take a look down the other passageway and see if maybe we can get around those floating gas creatures. What do you all think?"[/b]
Luther Lightblade |
Luther waits.
"Well, magical aids expire after time as well as my extraplanar servants. As you scouts can determine their value, I will let you decide how we proceed. I will clank along in my plated armor."
Eldar of the Lost |
"I will follow the direction you advise. This place is still very new to me"

Drusellia Malacore |
Drusellia says, "We should go soon. Use the magic while it is available. I recommend that we move forward."
Symon |
"Ok, well then lets move forward then. Kaspar has told me what is there, but we need to be very careful...who knows if that other creature has returned with friends. Ok, lets go!"
Slinking into the darkness with his "friend", Symon moves forward to the big chamber with the floating gas creatures.
GM Zed |
Heading to the north, following the guidance from Symon, the group move into an antechamber... the temperature rises even further as they draw closer to the glowing magma in the next cavern. Pale white and grey crystals cover the room in tightly packed formations, clustering in corners and around the central pillar.
...and in the glow of the cave beyond, clouds of green gas - somewhat out of place as they swirl around with an apparent sentience - move near the rocky ceiling...
Actions?
GM Zed |
Taking a moment, before moving into the main chamber, the group watch the gaseous creatures as they lazily move between the stalactites that trail from the roof of the cavern…
Eldar of the Lost |
Eldar follows. Doing the same. Shield in front. Slowly advancing into the chamber

Drusellia Malacore |
Dru follows the others, keeping to the shadows.

Caustic Stalkers, Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
As the group make their way into the chamber, the movement of the gaseous creatures seems to alter slightly... their movements, previously seemingly random within the heated air, become a little more deliberate... still swirling around out of reach, they seem to be tracking the movement of Eldar, Galahad and Drusellia...
...and, as the group draw close to the natural rock bridge across the magma flow, several significant cracks can be observed along the length its span...

GM Zed |
With Eldar leading the way, the group – still attracting the interest of the vapours moving around the roof of the cavern – move onto the rock bridge. As the heavily armoured warrior places a foot on the rock arch, there is a disconcerting creaking sound… followed by a ‘splash’ of sorts and a plume of smoke as a chunk of stone falls from the bridge into the magma below.

And it was all going so well...
...the very moment that Eldar's feet leave the ground, the lazily drifting clouds become angry tempests of boiling acid...
Initiative for Party and Enemy
Symon, Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Galahad, Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Luther, Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Drusellia, Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Eldar, Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Caustic Stalkers, Initiative: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Initiative Order
Caustic Stalkers then
Eldar, Galahad, Drusellia, Luther and Symon
The closest of the beings, forming an almost humanoid shape as it dives towards the group, spews a torrent of aerosolised acid at what it perceives to be intruders... burning flesh and pitting steel, the acid in the air burns as it fills the lungs of thise bearing the brunt...
Caustic Stalker 1, Breath Weapon (15ft cone targetting Luther and Eldar): 5d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 1, 1) = 11 acid damage - Reflex Save DC18 for half damage - plus Poison including a further 4 poison damage.
Eldar and Luther must make DC18 Fort Save or be affected by CON poison (Weakened: A character whose health is weakened by Constitution poison takes a –2 penalty on all Fortitude saves and Constitution checks. Every time he attempts a Fortitude save against the poison, whether he succeeds or fails, he takes damage as on initial exposure).
Caustic Stalkers 2 and 3, full defense
The roof of this cave is at 20ft high... and Caustic Stalkers 2 and 3 are floating at that height this turn... Caustic Stalker 1 is at ground level (give or take).
Everyone may act now.

RF: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
FS: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

Slash: 1d10 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Drusellia Malacore |
Not knowing what else to do, Dru settles for launching a fireball at the two closest to the ceiling.
Damage (DC 17 Reflex for half): 8d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 4, 1, 6, 2, 3, 6) = 30
GM Zed |
Drusellia's fireball lights up the roof of the cavern... pushing both of the gaseous creatures aside with its pressure wave... and then, truly taking flight, Eldar soars upwards and slashing into its foam-like form diminishes the closest of the creatures...
Caustic Stalker 2, Reflex Save vs Fireball: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27, saved (15 damage)
Caustic Stalker 3, Reflex Save vs Fireball: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29, saved (15 damage)
...whilst, from the shadows, Symon lets loose with an arrow... he strikes his target yet the arrow causes surprisingly little damage.
The Caustic Stalkers are Amorphous; immune to Critical Damage / Precision Damage.
Waiting on actions from Luther and Galahad.
Galahad of Cassomir |
Galahad steps forward and launches into a series of spinning sweeps with his glaive, assaulting the ground level stalker.
Five foot step, Spear Dancing Reach with swift action and full attack on Caustic Stalker 1

Apologies for slight delay in posting – a very busy weekend… back in the GM seat now!!!
Galahad’s glaive pierces the turbulent cloud several times… each time, rending a small amount of gas and diminishing the creature somewhat…
…and then, sliding towards Galahad, the creature buffets the fighter within its swirling gasses… and, feeling a sudden sting, Galahad realises that he has been burnt by powerful acids…
Caustic Stalker 1, Slam vs Galahad: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
Caustic Stalker 1, Slam vs Galahad: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26, hitting for 1d6 ⇒ 5 plus 1d6 ⇒ 2 acid damage and Chemical Burn
Galahad must make a Reflex Save DC18 or suffer a Chemical Burn; 1d6 acid damage for the next 1d4 ⇒ 4 rounds
…whilst, up amidst the stalactites looming above the group, the gaseous creatures swirl around Eldar… again and again, semi-solid limbs crash against him… but, despite being surrounded, not a single blow penetrates the enigmatic warrior’s armour…
Caustic Stalker 2, Slam vs Eldar (flanking): 1d20 + 15 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 15 + 2 = 23, missing

Symon |
Symon fires at the one attacking Galahad.
Attack-ranged: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Sneak: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5
Sorry I cannot remember, but is Sneak damage considered precise? I know you said the blobs are immune to critical and precise damage, but I was not sure about sneak..thanks

Would Luther's barkskin still be in effect? If so Galahad might not have been hit by the Stalker.
Reflex: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Galahad easily avoids taking more damage and launches an assault back at the monster.
Glaive Blade 1: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19

My understanding is that Sneak Damage is precise damage / and hence the Caustic Stalkers are effectively immune to it.
Simon's bolt fizzes through the gaseous creature... and, slightly deflected, drops limply into the magma. High above the rest of the fight, Eldar swings at the beasts... but, maybe unused to the absence of ground beneath his feet, misses wildly...
Would Luther's barkskin still be in effect? If so Galahad might not have been hit by the Stalker.
Yep, Barkskin in effect... and the Caustic Stalker misses.
Deflecting all of the creatures blows, Galahad steps backwards and swings once more with his glaive... twice his weapon cuts fragments loose from the creature; wisps of vapour dissipating as the blade draws away...
Luther and Drusellia may act now.
Luther Lightblade |
Luther attacks with the thunder mace at the creature on Galahad.
att1: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 271d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
att2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 131d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Eldar of the Lost |
forgot about BS... in that case +2 to hit and damage.... but dont think 17 makes it either
-Posted with Wayfinder
GM Zed |
Eldar - even with Bull's Strengthh, your attack misses.
Luther, moving forward to stand with Galahad, strikes. The mace, heavy and sure in his hands, swings hard into the creature… and despite the coalescent form of the beast appears to do some damage… the second swing is far less accurate though.
Waiting on an action from Drusellia.
