Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Kessel Cobey wrote:
"Hmm," Kessel says, "I may be able to cause a distraction, supposing you're able to take these two out quick, but they're not likely to remain interesting in the lute once the blades come out."

"They'll never know what hit 'em." Magnus whispers in reply from the shadows, freezing into stillness as first the lantern light, then the guard's voice filter down from above.

Keeping his eyes shaded by the brim of his hat, Magnus eyes the quickest way up to join the guards, in case Kessel can't convince them to come down here.

Heh, I'm seeing a scene from Star Wars now. "Hey buddy, come give me a hand with this!" :)

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Stealth

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19 Felicia begins to quietly make for one of the guards.

Bribes always welcome

The guard who spoke begins walking to the stairway. His companion also starts heading to the top of the stairs. Light from the bullseye lanterns stab out here and there among the stacked crates.

"Paulua! Sound off mon! You playin' some joke I'll get one of the saugs to bite your stupid ass!"

"Hello?" Kessel says stepping into the light, "Was it me you heard? Is Paulua your greeter? He went back to mind the door. Me, on the other hand, I'm coming through to give my respects to Jemerae."

Kessel shows his hands as he slowly approaches.

"Very keen ears you have," Kessel says, "Though I wasn't sneaking, few people can hear me when I don't want to be heard. Color me impressed. I must say though, keen ears, spotlight . . ."

Kessel careful pulls out his lute,

"I can't help but feel inspired."

Kessel gently strums away on his lute, attempting to fascinate the two guards:

Each creature within range receives a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the bard's level + the bard's Cha modifier) to negate the effect. If a creature's saving throw succeeds, the bard cannot attempt to fascinate that creature again for 24 hours. If its saving throw fails, the creature sits quietly and observes the performance for as long as the bard continues to maintain it. While fascinated, a target takes a –4 penalty on all skill checks made as reactions, such as Perception checks. Any potential threat to the target allows the target to make a new saving throw against the effect. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect.

DC 15

Bribes always welcome

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 131d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

The two guards stare fascinated at Kessel, mouths slack with a vacant pleased look

Ok. I think that anyone approaching them besides Kessel would allow them another snap out roll. However, a successful Stealth roll vs their diminished Perception will allow you to get within striking distance of them without breaking the fascination

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Can I take 10 on my stealth for an 18?

Bribes always welcome

Looking over the rules you aren't in immediate danger or combat so I'll allow it

1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 5 - 4 = 71d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 - 4 = 5

The fascinated guards fail to notice San ghosting up the stairs, silent as Death's Herald

Elf Magus 5

Magnus will follow San's example. Taking 10 on stealth gives me a 21.

Noting San's slow, cautious approach to the mesmerized guards, Magnus follows his fellow magical warriors example and moves ever so slowly and silently towards the guards. His noiseless approach gives credence to the stories of the elves famous stealthiness.

Don't want San facing two at once when they snap out of it! :)

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael follows the other two up, approaching behind the guards.

Stealth (taking 10) 18

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Felicia sneaks up

(Taking 10 on stealth for 26)

Bribes always welcome

The group gets within striking distance. The two guards stand at the head of the stairs, staring off with a blank look

Your go folks

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Felicia strikes out at a guard

Attack 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13 +2 if she can charge

Damage 1d4 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San reacts quickly and tries to run one of the guards through with Ghostfetter, activating his arcane strike in the process.

attack 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
damage 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16

Bribes always welcome

I'm going to assume you two hit the same one

Felicia and Sanvoros both hit the first guard, Felicia in the side, San in the throat. He dies with a gurgle

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan takes 10 for a 22 on Stealth.

He takes aim with Arvela, and looses an arrow.

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 Longbow of Hunting

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 +1 bow, and precise shot.

Bribes always welcome

Egan's arrow finds the other guard's leg

Elf Magus 5

As Egan's arrow flies, Magnus' rapier flies and flashes, quick as a snake he has taken two jabs at the guard as well, one of the strikes flashing with magical energy.

Full attack, regular strike and Spellstrike with Arcane Mark

Att 1 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 161d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Att 2 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 251d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Confirm crit for att 2 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Erm, presuming not? Less he has a low/flat foot AC? If so 2X Dmg for Att 2 = 12pts

Bribes always welcome

The guards are just in regular clothes and FF right now so that does crit

[Magnus' flashing blade draws a second smile along the second guard's neck. He chokes out a gush of blood and collapses on the floor[/i]

The warehouse is again silent. The party can see a door near the landing they are at. A small sign on it reads 'offices' and it is painted with the eschuteon of House Akkavin. It seems to be the only door, the only other thing is the walkway the two guards had been patrolling above the main part of the warehouse

Elf Magus 5

Magnus gives Kessel a thumbs up and a smile, salutes the corpses, flicks some drops of blood from his blade and returns it to it's scabbard in a swift motion.

He mimes dragging the bodies to behind nearby crates, and bends over to grab the shoulders of the man he and Egan took down, careful to pick up the guard's shoulders from behind so the man's blood doesn't get on his clothing.

After quietly placing the bodies where thy can't be seen easily, he glances to the door labeled 'offices'. He looks at the others, points to the office door and the walkway above.

"Which way now? The Low road or the High road?" He whispers with his usual grin.

Bribes always welcome

The door sits at the far side of the walkway's landing.

Actions??

Elf Magus 5

Curiosity overcomes what remains of Magnus' good sense, and the elf carefully makes his way towards the inviting door,...

Stealth 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30

Kessel moves to a location that he can assists if necessary but leaving room for the heavy hitters to move in ahead of him.

Bribes always welcome

Magnus ghosts up to the door silently. It seems a normal door. There is a hasp and lock on it, but the lock is open on the hasp.

APerception if you want to listen. I'll let the Stealth stand if you want to open and enter

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Just a general roll for Kessel

Bribes always welcome

Kessel cannot hear anything at the door

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San moves quietly up to the door, and tries his hand at a listen.

take 10 on stealth for an 18
take 10 on perception for a 21

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29 Perception
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 Stealth

Egan follows, bow at ready to take out any targets.

Bribes always welcome

San and Egan can hear a faint murmur. It sounds as if there is a conversation far off, perhaps a few rooms down

Elf Magus 5

Magnus shrugs, but takes his cue from San and Egan, he opens the door and moves silently inside,...

Bribes always welcome

The door opens to a corridor lit with a kerosene lamp suspended from the ceiling. Several doors lead off the hallway, all shut. The murmuring seems to be coming from the door at the end

Elf Magus 5

His hand resting lightly upon his sheathed rapier, Magnus motions the others onward, and carefully makes his way down the hall.

ANother stealth for this section? 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

Bribes always welcome

Naw we can go with the other one

Magnus ghosts down the hall until he gets to the last door. Voices can be heard behind it. It's an unremarkable door with a small plaque that reads 'head office'

I will need a new perception check to hear the convo

Elf Magus 5

Magnus puts one pointy ear close to the door,...

PErception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Erm,...

Magnus frowns at the door, rubs his ear as if to clean it, and tries again. If he could try a take 10? ;P

He waves the others to come to him, points to the door, and shrugs.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San will keep taking 10 on stealth and perception (18 and 21, respectively), and listen at the far door.

Bribes always welcome

San:

Spoiler:
San hears a thread of conversation. There's a few gaps, but he can hear some of it. There are three voices.

"We cannot risk detection at this sensitive ... Snaavrak has promised ... The Hidden Fin stands ... "

"Strangers have come ... Questions about ... Can't risk Opalline involvement "

"Question the newcomers ... Jemerae and a few fins... Keep it quiet. "

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Felicia follows the others but stays at the back.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San quietly relays back to the others what he has heard. "So, should we drop in unannounced? he says, very quietly.

Elf Magus 5

Magnus grin speaks louder than words,...

"Sounds like they're planning on visiting us," Kessel whispers, "Seems only neighborly that we visit first"

Elf Magus 5

Magnus nods in eager agreement, his grin widening.
(You weren't sure it could do that.)

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26 Perception

Egan nocks an arrow, and nods a firm yes at the party. His eyes set in resolve.

Sczarni

Female Human Oracle of the Heavens 6

Citlali's response is a wild grin at San as she readies herself for action.

Bribes always welcome

So you guys going to do what, exactly?

Elf Magus 5

Sorry, busy. (As usual) I think we have an accord? :)

Magnus flexes his fingers to loosen them. He listens to see if the people inside sound as if they might be coming out.

So, do we wait for them to exit and tag them as the leave the room? Or introduce ourselves? :) Magnus votes for introducing ourselves. :D

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

Okay here's the plan: bust into the room and stick our pointy weapons into their vulnerable flesh. Also known as plan A for adventures.

Bribes always welcome

LOL

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

If San were to head in first, he could use his arcane bond to cast web. May get a few survivors to question, then.

Elf Magus 5

Lol! Plan 'A' it is then! :) So San leads with a Web, followed by Magnus and Felicia who head straight to flanking positions, follow that with the usual (beating things into submission). Hoping to take at least a prisoner to get some answers. Sound right? ;)

With a grin, Magnus throws open the door, bowing for Sanvoros to precede him.

Bribes always welcome

The door is thrown open by Magnus, revealing a large room with a round table in the center. The men sit at it. One is dressed in fine clothing, with the sigil of House Akkavin worked into the breast. Another is a muscular Eastern Islander, dressed in half plate and carrying a large sword. A third looks to be a local. Dressed as a prosperous merchant, with the slightly pop-eyed look the party has seen about town.

Along the wall half a dozen men stand. Eastern Islanders and Opalline. They start as the door swings open, then reach for their weapons

group initiative plz

Elf Magus 5

Group Init: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Meh. I'll take it! ;P Magnus goes on 18
