Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Thanks!

As the alchemical strands finally fall free, San exclaims, "Gods, that lasted forever!!" He spends a swift action to activate his arcane strike, and lashes out at the wereshark in front of him with Ghostfetter.

attack 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Egan takes aim and releases another arrow at the wizard.

Just re-posting this as it would have gone off last round when the shark came into bite me. Also, the old rolls for convenience sake were 24 to hit, 5 damage.

AND swing and a miss! ;P

Magnus looks at the two shark-men before him, and glances over his shoulder at the wizard, still fighting off his animated longsword. His sword goes for an overhead chop and misses by a mile, striking sparks from the floor. Upon seeing the wide miss of his weapon he frowns petulantly.

"Hey! What are you doing? Focus!" he yells at the sword.

"Don't worry Mr Wizard. I'll be right with you. I just have to take care of something,... UGLY!" He calls as he turns back to face the wereshark,...

OK, using Spell Combat (NOT spellstrike) to 2-weapon fight, one attack with Sword, casting spell with other hand, but it a defensive spell, (Mirror Image) so no 2nd attack. Appropriate negatives to hit etc included. (I think because it is Spell Combat, it does NOT draw AoO? so no casting defensively. If I am wrong, please correct me.) :)

Magnus mutters in the language arcane as he teases the wereshark with his rapier, looking for an opening while his left hand makes complicated spell gestures. With a final phrase and an "Ah-HAH!" of triumph, he finishes his spell and lunges forward, and FIVE of the Dashing Dandy suddenly leap forward to try and skewer the fish-man.

OK. I'm just going to roll this up

The last wereshark falls, slashed to ribbons. Iz begins to stanch the huge bite mark on his side.

The tattooed man tangled in the vines stops struggling. He stares at the party with malice in his eyes.

"Who are you fools? Do you even comprehend what you have gotten yourself into? You just messed with House Akkavin, and we always pay back a slight threefold."

"That doesn't sound like the position of a man that wants to walk out of this room alive." Kessel says, "We're not here to fight you believe it or not, we're just standard run of the mill trouble shooters looking for a missing ship. We were going to negotiate for it's release, I mean who's to say how it came to be in your family's possession, but after all that blood shed I'm wondering if negotiating is beyond your type and we just shouldn't take it? Are you Gervas or Jemerae by the way? I've only been in town the one night so I'm not quite as up to date on every member of this local Akkavian operation I'm afraid. Embarrassing I know but we have been under some constraints since we came ashore."

The man spits

"I am Jemarae. Scion of House Akkavin. And you have just killed several of my house's retainers in our warehouse. I'm sure my companions have run to get the watch. You'll all be swinging from a gibbet come next sunset "

"What companions are you talking about? You're the only one from your organization still alive in this warehouse at the moment, but speaking of the death sentence, I believe piracy, grand theft, and in some jurisdictions crimping are capital crimes, that is supposing some of the ship's original crew remain alive, otherwise murder is most certainly on that list. If they're still alive Jerarae I'd suggest you tell us where they are, I'm quickly running out of reasons not to let my companions here simply slit your throat."

Elf Magus 5

Magnus flicks blood from his blade as Kessel speaks to the captured man.

He gives Jemarae a smirk.

Jemerae laughs scornfully

"Two of my associates ran from this very room!"

He looks hard at Kessel

"By all means, haul me up in front of the town magistrate. I'm sure Cousin Amarisk would love to hear your tale of piracy."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Okay Jemerae," Kessel says pulling his sword, "you win, I was arguing to keep you alive but clearly you're correct, we need to put you down."

Elf Magus 5

Magnus shakes his head.

"Some people just never learn." He says sadly as he snatches his floating longsword from the air just as its magically animating force exhausts itself.

He taps Kessel on the shoulder, "Please sir. Allow me. You needn't bother lowering yourself to HIS standards. And this is more my line of work." He says to the bard. He bows his head respectfully to Kessel, then turns to the prisoner.

"Well sir. You've had your chance to parlay. Any last words before I send you to your final reward? Yes? No? Very well then,..."

Magnus slowly and deliberately places the point of his fine longsword against the prisoners chest.

BLUFF (acting) to make seem more threatening:
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Intimidate: To actually be scary?
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Magnus takes his time, giving prisoner and others time to easily stop him by saying something, but if prisoner doesn't relent, and Kessel and others give the nod, he'll do it. (He doesn't like killing 'helpless' prisoners, but if they are still dangerous, even in long run, he can work with it.) And he really does think of Kessel as an artist, and he shouldn't 'dirty his hands' with such things. :)

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San scrapes the last of the tanglefoot bag goop from his clothing, looking disdainfully at the captured man, and then to Magnus. "What are you waiting for? He's absolutely right. When the magistrates come back, we were trespassing and they were 'defending themselves'. At least that's how it'll be seen. And he's probably right, I'm sure House Akkavin has this whole port in their coin purse. So, yeah, the only thing we can do here is kill him and be on our way before anyone gets here. After all, this joker has the best chance of describing us; the others were busy fighting and running away like cowards."

San is neither Bluffing nor trying to Intimidate. He honestly thinks we should kill him, do a quick search, and go.

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Felicia moves to keep watch to see if anyone is coming from outside.

Sanvoros Draben wrote:

This is pretty much Kessel's opinion on the matter, though he very much doubts the Akkavins are going to be too broken up about it, the man's an idiot as the house has to have holdings in other ports and allegations of piracy, crimping, and the fact that we know they're were sharks and have a sahaugin army abducting towns folks, well if this gets out it's not going to be good for their bottom line internationally.

"Better make it quick, there might be another secret exit out of this building, and our guards up might miss one of those two. Unlikely but why take a chance."

Jemerae blanches as the sword point pricks him

"Don't be foolish! If you are looking for a ship we can perhaps negotiate something. You will gain the unending enmity of my house if you kill me. Who sent you? Which ship do you search for?"

Elf Magus 5

Magnus merely raises a fine elvish eyebrow at the man's words. He glances over his shoulder to Kessel.

"Oh. NOW he wants to talk,..." He quips disdainfully, but his eyes sparkle with merriment.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"He's just stalling for time. He told the truth the first time - the magistrates will be here soon. He'll say anything to bide time and save his hide. Just kill him quickly and let's get the Hells out of here. Or, if you'd rather, I'll do it." San holds Ghostfetter up and starts advancing on the man ...

"Agreed," Kessel says, "He knows the boat we're after, unless there's more then one pirated vessel docked on his wharf."

Elf Magus 5

Magnus sighs. Not theatrically, but simply and honestly.

"Sadly, I fear you are correct." He says over his shoulder.

He turns to face Jemerae.

"Truly, I would have preferred to kill you honestly and fairly in battle. I hope that you had enough honor in this life to give you a good start in your next." Magnus salutes the man, then kills him in one swift stroke.

He uses a move that he knows will kill the man before he has time to recognize he is injured. Jemerae feels no pain before he dies. Magnus wipes and sheathes the longsword in in it's sheath on his back in a fluid motion.

Coup de gras. Magnus does not enjoy making others suffer. Although he's certainly willing to make exceptions if the person warrants it. ;P
