"Joanna, have you finished examining those notes as I asked?"

Teldon / Linguistics - finally it comes to the scholar, the runes represent letters...and the most often repeated rune corresponds to the letter 'E' in both 'Wealth' in the Gold Runes and 'Greed...realising the gold runes represent the 'Virtues of Rule' and onyx, the sins...it doesn't take too long to establish which rune represents which letter.

...and, in little time, you are able to decipher the movable runes...

Fed by greed it lifeless grows,
The breathless howler, the man devourer
Struck by men spared the gallows
Open veins bleed bloodless power
Heart sundered, its hoard is plundered
The endless taker, the widow maker

It is from the phrase above that you can move four letters into what is presumably the locking mechanism.

I'm stumped, but I'm terrible at this kind of riddle. I'm also thinking that Ziomarra would be far better at them than I am...

male Human Investigator [empirist] (VMC Magus) 7 | HP: 52/52 | AC: 18/13/16 | F +4, R +8, W +7 (+9 v Illusion) | Init +2 | Perception +17 (+20 v traps)

Teldon reads the riddle aloud.

"The key to this manner of riddle is the ambiguity of language... 'lifeless grows' can't refer to natural growth because nothing lifeless actually grows- it must be a reference to something that can be made bigger physically or can expand in influence... because of greed... a "home" or "envy" perhaps... no those don't work... 'breathless howler'... "wind"... no, greed has no bearing there... 'men spared the gallows'... what do we do with our prisoners? conscripted service?... "army"... hmm, that is a man devourer, and often grows from greed..." Teldon pauses for a moment to consider what he's said. "Well, the "army" is a widow maker, and some would say endless taker, but I don't see how it fits with 'open veins' and 'bloodless power' or a sundered heart... 'open veins'... bloodless veins... another meaning for veins... Ladies, I believe I may have it!"

I'll wait a little while to say what I think it is in case anyone else wants to wrestle with it... Teldon's monologue really was just me trying to work through it in writing, so if you follow his logic you'll probably see what I'm thinking

"Gold?" Joanna asks quietly, "It's lifeless, but people 'grow' hoards of it because of greed. I'm not sure how it fits with the second line though. It's mined, and men convicted of crimes are often sent to the mines for hard labor instead of hanging. It's found in veins and lots of gold is often a sign of having a lot of power, but there's no blood. The next live could be referring to the mines it comes from. The last line, well, there are plenty of tales that deal with tragedy because of it."

She looks up and blushes.

"Sorry that's probably wrong. I'm not that good at this sort of thing."

"Unless I am mistaken, which seems unlikely, you are on the in the correct 'vein' but have not yet struck the proverbial motherload. Gold does not grow... the hoard may, but then "hoard" would be the answer and that is both too many characters and unlikely given its use in the fifth stanza. Plus, as you have pointed out, it doesn't seem to fit the second line."
Teldon turns his attention away from the box for the first time since it was revealed and looks at Joanna...
"But you have already given the answer without realizing it."

putting Teldon's answer in a spoiler because I'm pretty sure its right and don't want to spoil it for anyone who wants to wrestle with it. that said, its possible i'm wrong so if you see any issues with it please mention them before we set off a trap!

Teldon's answer:
"The fifth line does refer to a mine- as do all the others: it grows as greed sends miners deeper; it howls in certain atmospheric conditions, and men go down through its mouth as one is devoured; men are sentenced to labor there in lieu of the gallows; open bloodless veins of precious metals run through them; and many a man his lost his life in the mines around Golarion... that is our answer- MINE."

"HA!"
Teldon suddenly lets out a laugh so loud it startles even him.
"The impudence! I, truly, didn't realize until I said it aloud... to get what's inside, you must call it 'mine'! Even the combination itself is a wordplay. Oh, I like these Thassilonians"

"I think it's something intangible, perhaps a state of mind or being?", Briana offers timidly. "Greed fuels all sorts of emotional states that lead to different actions. A desire to increase personal wealth or power or..." her voice trails off as she furrows her brow.

Okay, that makes sense; I had a different idea but I think I was thinking about it a little too hard :)

With a dismissive snort, Ziomarra turns away from the paradox box. "Enough of this. Perhaps the wisdom of the Harrow will assist us." She sits at the table, and with a flourish begins shuffling her Harrow deck in increasingly complex ways.

With all the shuffling, it's hard to tell if she's seriously attempting a reading, or is simply giving up in frustration.

That was my guess, too. :)

Nalathi snaps her fingers at Teldon's exclamation. "Oh yea! A mine! We found an abandoned one once not far from where we lived; part of it was collapsed, and we found some skeletons in there. The mine killed them. I don't know what 'gallows' are, but I'm guessing they're something bad-- the skeletons were all wearing iron shackles. And of course gold comes in veins-- there was lots of it in other tunnels, I guess the miners never went that far."

Moving the runes around on the surface of the box, there is a very satisfying ‘clunk’ sound as the correct letters are placed into the unlocking mechanism…suddenly, starting at the locking mechanism, a crack appears within the previously intact box…and swiftly propagates to the edges of the box…in no time, a removable lid has appeared on what was, moments ago, a featureless stone cube. There is a gentle hissing sound coming from the box as air rushes into the box through the newly formed cracks.

The sound of the activation of the paradox box breaks Ziomarra from her funk. Gathering her cards into a deck again, she rises. Shooting Teldon an enigmatic look (appreciation? bemusement? understanding?), she smiles mysteriously and says, "The cards said you are a true scholar! Well done."

As Teldon opens the box, the fortune-teller moves her hand under one of her many scarves. When it comes out again, her deck of cards has been relaced with a razor-edged starknife. She gazes at the paradox box with suspicion.

Cautiously removing the lid and peering into the box, there is little to see within…it is quite dark…and then, with a ‘Pop’ sound and a sudden metallic taste in the air, the space above the box somehow folds in on itself, holds for a second and then reverberates back out…almost like a bubble. Somehow bursting into existence with the bubble, accompanied by the sound of giggling, two small, greasy looking dog headed humanoids land on the table next to the opened box. Eyes blinking, as if unaccustomed to the light, they chatter loudly at each other…totally oblivious to you for a second or two…and then, with some malice, pick up and throw Koriah’s notes to the floor. The neatly sorted papers land in a disorganised heap...and the first of the creatures roars with laughter.

Knowledge (Nature) DC10:
Well known for their mischievous natures, their nasty senses of humour, and their destructive habits, the fey creatures known as gremlins rightfully earn their reputations as cruel pranksters and sadistic saboteurs. Ranging in size from 3 feet in height down to barely over a foot tall, numerous types of gremlins stalk the world's dark and unseen reaches, tending to linger near thin spots in reality between the Material Plane and the realms of the fey. The smaller a gremlin is, the stronger its ties to the realm of the fey remain, and the stranger and more potent its powers.

The particular type of gremlin that have just manifested before you are Pugwampis; mean, dog-faced, and cowardly, they are loved by no one—not even other gremlins. These gremlins take disproportionate amounts of enjoyment from the accidents and missteps of other creatures, often going to great lengths to manufacture the perfect deadfalls or stumbling blocks. They then wait nearby, both to laugh at the inevitable mishaps and to make sure their personal unluckiness is passed off on their victims...indeed, their mere presence radiates an aura of poor fortune…bad things just ‘happen’ when Pugwampis are around

"These are pugwampis, and we're going to have to catch them if we want them to avoid making mischief." She moves forward as she tells the others, putting her self between them and the little gremlins. She is sure it's useless, but she is compelled to at least attempt to reason with them.

"Please stop that. If you're good and behave we won't have to hurt you." she tells them, her voice calm and her sword pointed down at the floor to avoid threatening them.

All - the Pugwampis have an 'Aura of Unluck' around them which means that, any time a d20 check is required, you will need to roll 2d20 and take the lowest of the two results. Joanna has just pointed out that the 'Aura' should have applied to the Initiative check (and she's right) but, given that the Pugwampis are already going second, I think the Paizo dice roller has 'unlucked' you all already...so I won't redo Initiative

Joanna, already a little green from the smell of urine, blood, and death, retches and barely manages to keep her breakfast down when Teldon kindly adds sulfur, scorched hair, and burnt pugwampi fur to the already delightful bouquet. The sight of blood, gore, and pugwampi innards splattered over the floor also stirs her being.

Joanna, not wanting to add vomit to the mess runs for the door and the nearest safe place to empty her stomach. Any servants that see her must be wondering what's going on in her head. They needn't wonder, though, for what is going through poor Joanna's mind is pretty simple.

...Don'tpuke!Don'tpuke!Don'tpuke!Don'tpuke!Don'tpuke!Don'tpuke!...

Sorry if this is a little much. I figured someone killing something for the first time wouldn't be holding down their cookies for long when you introduce all of the sights and smells that happened in the aftermath. She also still has the Pugwampi on her sword and she still has said sword in hand.

Ziomarra - would Teldon know he'd been subject to the Evil Eye? Something that gives him an uncomfortable feeling (and I think Evil Eye can work that way)...with some obvious scowling from yourself...just so he knows that you are seriously unimpressed....

...as the smoke dissipates, you notice that the items Teldon had been reaching for are now scattered across the floor next to the upturned box.

Briana looks around frantically for something to sop the urine-soaked papers with. "What a mess," she moans. "We'll be lucky if the Heidmarches don't toss us all out. I can't afford to pay for that ta-OW! Stop it Rowenna, it's okay now! Get off!"

"MAAAOW!"

The rules are a bit vague on that. It's a supernatural ability, so it could work either way. If it's OK with you, I'd say that normally, the Evil Eye is just that-- a vague feeling of trepidation and self-doubt. And, yes, Zee would certainly be giving him the ol' hairy eyeball over this for a while, and would not be concealing her displeasure. She'a already referred to herself as a 'witch,' so I'd let Teldon figure out the rest. OK, let's go for it...

Her face still furious, Ziomarra fixes Teldon with a disturbing and withering stare, her eyes the icy blue of an angry sea.

Hex: Evil Eye. -4 penalty on ability checks for the next 6 rounds. Will save DC 13 reduces that to 1 round.

"nemernic prost ?" Teldon says with none of the wanton emotion the wild Varisian woman has succumbed to. "Eu nu sunt prostul care a oferit proprietate gazda noastră ", a gremlin . Spune-mi -am planul tău genial includ o urgență pentru cazul în care creatura pur și simplu a fugit cu premii sale , atunci când a lansat în aer liber ?"

Varisian:
"Stupid a$$hole?
I am not the fool who offered our hostess' property to the gremlin. Tell me did your brilliant plan include a contingency for if the creature merely fled with its prizes when you released it outdoors?"

will save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

is there a spellcraft of knowledge[arcana] check to identify the effect?

also- (i was going to put this in 'discussion' but since the conversation is here...) i am very opposed to PVP. we are all pathfinders, i think that carries a certain expectation of maturity and professionalism. plus, Teldon has a very good memory and taking those sorts of actions against him will lead to very long term distrust (and unhealthy party dynamics).

and the penalty is only -2 unless you have an ability that doubles it or makes you count as 8th level for that hex

...as the adrenalin subsides you start to become aware of things beyond the room...the sound of people rushing down a nearby staircase, voices shouting and asking what's going on...and the creaking of the bookcase as it rocks ever so gently back and forth having been used as a Gremlin's climbing frame...

Looking around you, the room is a scene of minor devastation...the Paradox Box lies on it's side atop a crushed Pugwampi, Koriah's notes are scattered and soaked with pungent urine, the table is now dented, scorched and collapsed, books are flung across the room...and, left where she dropped it, a gremlin is impaled on Joanna's sword...

You can have a couple of posts to take in the mess, cool down, etc and then your potential employer will be back

"القرف"

Osiriani:
"$h!t"

"Anyone know Prestidigitation... or Mending, for that table... or maybe Unseen Servant?" Teldon asks, picking up the lid and coffer and looking for a suitable place to set them...

She watches the creature warily, following it with her trident, as it jumps back into the box-- then jumps herself when Teldon's vial explodes. Ow. She rubs one of her ears. It wasn't particularly loud, but it was quite unexpected. She replaces her trident at her back and looks at the two dead bodies, a puzzled expression on her face. "So... how do we know when we can kill things? Are we going to eat these?"

Breaking her glare at Teldon, Ziomarra sighs, his rebuke to her rebuke sinking in. She then looks around the room at the damage the drăcuşori caused directly and the further damage caused by the party. Anger melts away from her face, replaced by a smile. She holds her hand over her mouth in a futile attempt to stifle a giggle, and then bursts out in laughter.

"I think we may have impressed the Venture Captain, but not in the way she wanted!" She walks over to Teldon, and takes his hand. "Teldon, I apologize. I had not considered any treasures that may have been within the box. And calling you names was not appropriate. I'll try not to let that happen again. My people have strong emotions and sometimes get carried away. Still-- I think you may need to practice your aim." Her eyes sparkle with laughter. "I have a few tables I no longer care for."

Teldon's expression softens as well... "Am auzit că emoțiile foc unei femei Varisian poate fi o mare binecuvântare în ... anumite circumstanțe ." He says with a sparkle of his own.

Varisian:
"I have heard that a Varisian woman's fiery emotions can be a great blessing in... certain circumstances."

"and, in my defense, the pugwampi is known for causing bad luck to those nearby," he adds with a slight chuckle.

Joanna heaved one last time, her stomach, finally, empty. She'd barely made it to a spot behind the bushes, far enough out of the way that the smell shouldn't be a problem.

Too bad that the same could not be said of her boots. The stench of Pugwampi urine was almost enough to get her heaving again. She looks to her right hand, guessing that the foul little beast wouldn't cause too much of a mess if it was out here as well.

Wha? Where is my sword?

"Ugh, I must have dropped it in the study. Great. I'll be lucky if I can find a position as a choir-girl in some out of the way parish at this rate," she mutters to herself.

Seeing nothing for it, she heads back to the house, taking off her boot and walking back inside in her stocking feet, which thankfully did not smell of pugwampi urine.

She walks by a mirror and pauses for a second, unable to keep herself from laughing. The hair will grow back, and I can, hopefully, get the clothing clean. The first impression, well, that's a loss anyway. she thinks as she tries her best to straighten her appearance up and takes note that she's going to need her hair trimmed.

She finds the room much like she left it and sighs as she realizes that she doesn't have the least idea about getting this room cleaned up.

"Sorry about that," she tells the others, "Th-that was the first time I've ever drawn blood, much less killed something, and..." her voice trails off as she realizes she's beginning to ramble.

"Sorry," she says again, "Does anyone have a sack or something they're not too fond of to put those things in?" She points to the two pugwampi corpses.

Briana had been eyeing Teldon and Ziomarra somewhat apprehensively as she made efforts to find something to sponge up the worst of the damage to the papers. She had no idea what was being said, only that there was shouting....which quickly gave way to laughter and smiles.

"I'm not sure what's being said, but I'm glad you two seem to have reached some sort of understanding," she says with a bit of a bemused smile. "Hopefully our hosts feel the same way because I think that the table is a lost cause."

She then gives Nalathi an odd look in response to her questions. "I...I guess in most cases, you just "know"? If they're going to hurt other people or you..." her voice trails off as she looks rather perplexed.

To Teldon's comment, Ziomarra arches an eyebrow and replies, "Cine știe ce au cărțile în magazin pentru noi?"

Varisian:
"Who knows what the cards might have in store for us?"

Looking around at the disaster area that had been VC Heidnarch's study, she remarks, "Let's start cleaning up this mess as best we can. Oh, one other thing... My friends call me 'Zee.'"
