"It was my idea and Alek thought it was a good one!" Maavu stands up. "Something is obviously wrong in Cauldron. Good people need to be in charge. It's gone beyond padding the pockets of the rich. Something evil is going on there and Alek's visions confirmed it."
Maavu stops and Oliron steps in before he can continue. "But perhaps, just perhaps, we were wrong in this approach."
Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |
"You got your information from visions from Alek? Do you have any other sources of the problems affecting Cauldron? Or just Alek?"
Dyrant ponders.
"And it was your idea, though, to take control of the Guard? You're sure?"
Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |
"Could you repeat to us what he told you of these visions? What did he tell you about his experience of envisioning them? Please be as specific as possible."
GM_Chris |
"Alek didn't provide details. He just spoke of a great evil working to destroy the city. Since our goals were the same, to ensure the safety of Cauldron, we didn't ask for much more. Besides, paladins are like your archon friend there. Shiny and neat to look at. Sometimes they don't make a lot of sense, but you trust them anyay."

"Gentlemen, it's true that Cauldron has seen more than its share of tragedy lately. As I've said, we have seen our own signs of much greater impending troubles. I suspect some force is driving events to a head. Whether or not Skellerang is the most effective commander for these dark days, we will be stronger if we find common cause with him."
"As I have proposed to Dyrant here, our energies are better used investigating and attempting to forestall this cataclysm. To put it in words a paladin might understand, don't busy yourself smiting goblins when you've a dragon to fight."
Glimmil |
Glimmil rustles and wobbles in his seat, uncomfortable at sitting still for yet another great length of time where Team Toffitt and Maynor inquisition the newest friends that the Cauldron Five can be making.
I like Ekaym. He seems like he could be a friendly sort. I bet he knows a lot of heroic songs.
Glimmil eyes the minstrel's instrument while smiling and eating, occasionally mouthing the words to a heroic gnomish ballad to himself during the meal.
Glimmil finally perks up when Toffitt mentions fighting dragons, but then returns to his own thoughts, as he turns over a variety of spoons, inspecting and shining them.
As the shiny plate is presented and passed around, Glimmil excites and takes more time than necessary, examining the plate for it's reflective qualities more than anything else.
"Hey, there's pictures on this too! These six-armed guys look like they might be up to no-good. Do-badder rituals and stuff."
Glimmil rubs his chin, somewhat impersonating Dyrant's early pondering.
"Hey I wonder if Alek was looking for a way to help Cauldron, and maybe he let loose some sort of ancient evil curse thing and maybe that's what's gotten into him? This kind of plate makes me think of ancient crypts and curses. --and sphinxes and riddles!"
Clearing his throat, Glimmil points at the headless demon.
"Is this a landmark that someone could recognize?"
Finneas Glenn |
Finneas watches the conversation move past him and around him, leaving his brain fuddled until Gimmil speaks up.
"Yeah, let's follow this map. That's something we can all agree on right?"
Atol Lem |
Atol listens thoughtfully at all that is discussed.
I don't think these fine folks corrupted our paladin, they seem honest enough.

"I have a scroll of comprehend languages. If we think it will decipher this plate, I say we use it now. No need to wait another day to learn what we can of this thing. At tomorrows first light I suggest we follow this map, using the headless demon statue as a guide. Perhaps we will find our poor paladin on the same road."
Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |
Once he finds that he can't readily decipher the inscriptions, Toffitt retrieves a potion and quaffs it. Touching the plate, he reads silently for a moment (in case some of the information is not suitable for the Chisel members' ears) and then reads aloud.
Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |
"I am still concerned with the half-orcs coming here under false pretenses and to make unjust war. I think seeking our lost paladin is secondary in importance to stopping Skellerang."
Dyrant grumbles.
"They are unjust in their machinations and unlawful to deny the writ of challenge. We cannot let the people of Redgorge be unprotected why we seek Alek."
Dyrant slams his fist on the table.
"The safety of our people is priority...especially from unjust war. We must deal with them first, even if it means applying the cudgel to Skellerang ourselves. The Church itself may rise to fight them. It is a waste of time, but I'll not risk innocents while we seek one who is less innocent, no matter how important he might be."
* * *
Dyrant listens to the opinions of brave Sir Glim and Trusty Atol, nodding and agreeing, while fiddle-faddling with the plate.
These markings...I should be able to piece them out...if I had more time and training in codery, runes, and linguistics. Wow...I don't have a single point in Linguistics? Who is running this character? Geez...what a yahoo.
"Yes, Atol, your scroll or mine might work," Dyrant says while calling the scroll to hand from his haversack.
Dyrant reads his scroll of Comprehend Languages.
If it can successfully translate the runes, he will read aloud to the table.
I typed this up before Toffitt posted, I'm leaving it because I like the words "fiddle-faddle".

Dyrant will be ready to leave on the morrow (either back to Cauldron to deal with the Mayor/Skellerang or to find Alek) with only slight changes to his spell selection.
Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |
"I will not risk escalating this crisis by taking up arms against Skellerang. The only option I see is to forestall conflict with him, until we investigate further. If we can peaceably bring a halt to the conflict, then I am all in favor of doing so. But it shall not be through force of arms by my hand. I am afraid bellicose, pious wrath shall do us all an equal disservice should we stay and negotiate."
Atol Lem |
"Gentlemen please! Let us not be split the way the city is. I think our best course of action is to find the root of the problem and quickly. We've been dealing with the symptoms and getting further behind as our strings are tugged further and further."
"Let things play out as they will while we seek the root and tear it out. That's the only way to kill a weed."
Atol continues to advise following the map first and quickly.

Dyrant listens to Atol and nods. Thinking further, he presses Oliron and Ekaym further about the half orc army and what kind of resistance Red Gorge is likely to put up.
"Ekaym, Oliron, it is your opinion that Skellerang will bring his army here soon? If so, how soon? And what kind of resistance and casualties are the RedGorgians likely to face?" Dyrant says as he looks in his bowl for the 10th time looking for more gristle and failing.
"I know we'd like to pursue the trail of Alek and his map, however, I'll not leave this place to be slaughtered or oppressed when I can do something about it. We can make haste back to Cauldron and talk to the Mayor and/or Skellerang and, with the words of the Archon backed up by Jenya and the Church, we should forestall any action against Red Gorge."
Dyrant makes an angry fist.

Dyrant sneers at his stew bowl while looking for more gristle.
"Though I would go hunt Alek now, I think we can wait until we handle this situation first."
Failing to find gristle, Dyrant leans back in his chair.

"Perhaps a note with our seal will suffice to stall matters. I do not like the idea of delaying our pursuit. Not with rumors rife of impending cataclysm. But I am amenable to anything short of combat with our people." 'Our' people. I 've grown too attached to this place. Or to Carts, perhaps.
Atol Lem |
We have a seal!
Atol grins remembering his Arcane Mark.
"A note might not carry enough weight, but I'm not sure we can stop the troops with the information we have now in any event so perhaps it is best. A note with our seal with the information we have and a request to give us a few days to sort the matter out."
"Asking for a delay will be more likely to succeed I think than asking for total forbearance."
Finneas Glenn |
Finneas shrugs before taking Dyrant's bowl and going to the front for more gristle. When he returns he slides the bowl to Dyrant before standing and waiting his turn to speak.
"The strong will succeed, Kord teaches us that. If Skellerang attacks with half-orcs by his side you'll not survive. Best to run and hide lest ye find yourselves squished like rats. Alek may be of Cuthbert but these accords are of Kord, wherein a man may prove himself worthy through strength of arms where the treacherous and glib steal iron from limbs and drip poison with their honeyed tongues. Going back to Cauldron would waste valuable time better spent finding Alek and convincing him he is not on the proper path. If you'll remember there were stories in town of Alek crushing dice and men with his bare hands. Clearly he did not gain such power from the Chisel if their mewling here is any indication. Head along the river a few hours and seek out Alek or waste time bandying more forked words with men who have no arm for battle, the choice for me is clear, and by that I mean the river and headless demon, lest any of you mistake my intent."
With this monologue delivered Finneas collapses into the nearest chair, at least two spell scrolls worth of sweat pouring down his face.
"What was in that stew?"
Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |
"Forked?!?" Toffitt catches himself stiffening up like his priggish father, a lowly courtier with airs. He catches himself, and relaxes, laughing. "Let us put a fork in it, then. Sirs, have you a runner you trust with your lives? Lets make a rubbing of this damned thing and write our note. Time for Cuthbert's champion to meet the fist of Kord."
Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |
Dyrant gently disagrees.
"I think we should go back to Cauldron...unless any of you can explain why the life of a corrupted paladin is in any timely danger compared to the innocents who might die needlessly in a conflict. The time pressure comes from the war, not from the lost soul. "
Dyrant listens to the messenger talk.
"I do not trust a messenger...unless it has the support and weight of a Cuthbertine. Jenya needs to understand as well. We can stop a war in a day. Why rush elsewhere?"
Finneas Glenn |
Finneas shakes his head.
"Maybe I don't understand, but isn't Skellerang marching here to find Alek because of the challenge? Doesn't a messenger just have to say that Alek isn't here and we're looking for him to stop the challenge, which would stop the war? And why would a messenger need to be a Cuthbertine to carry a message? While we're at it Dyrant, why am I thinking more clearly than you? Has word of Alek's corruption befuddled you?"
Now stop that.
Female: No, he must see even if I have to chew through that gristle he calls a brain one word at a time.
Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |
Dyrant looks at Finn, confuzzled-like.
"I thought they were coming here to destroy the Chisel based on evidence they wouldn't share. That is what they said at dinner, I think."
I'm still confused as to their reasoning.
"But dear Finn, do you have any good reason not to handle it ourselves? Are we under some time commitment I'm unaware of? Seems to me that our true foe lies in Cauldron and plots against good citizens, making war for unjust reasons. Why would we need to find this paladin at all? If he is corrupt and gone, why should we worry further about it when we have a known foe?"
Finneas Glenn |
"Now you've confused me. Either you believe them and they're coming here to destroy the Chisel on secret evidence, or they're the enemy and have to be destroyed. If you believe them, then we're here to destroy the Chisel too, and if you don't then Alek isn't corrupt and he can help us against them. Right?"
Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |
"Uh...what?" Dyrant asks. "Truthfully, their motives are either completely asinine or diabolically clever. I cannot decide if they know what they are doing for all the logic that it makes."
"Just answer me this: why do we care about the corrupt paladin now? If he's gone and corrupt, why are we bothering with him at all when we have a foe launching assaults on Cauldron?"
Glimmil |
Images of six-armed demon monsters dance in Glimmil's thoughts as the words exchanged between Dyrant, Toffitt and surprisingly now Finneas float around his head, but never find the secret tunnel that leads into his consciousness.
Blah blah blah.
Closing his eyes, Glimmil imagines himself glowing a brilliant shiny light and standing atop a rocky crag, holding his lance atop Cog as writhing grey multi-armed enemies cower below. He lowers his lance, charges, and splits their ranks as he rides over rough terrain deep in some underground chamber.
Finally, he emerges at the edge of a lovely alabaster fountain whereupon two gnomish damsels in distress are chained to an altar of a strange six armed demon.
Shaking his head, eyes still closed, Glimmil tries to make out their images in his waking dream. Suddenly a bell rings, and Glimmil glances up to recognize the clock from Ghelve's shop, both hands pointing upward at the twelve position.
Dong. Dong.
Fires leap out about Glimmil as large fire elementals burst forth from the ground, burning away the six-armed demons. The two gnomish damsels shout in distress. One is Skie. The other is Ellywinkle.
Dong. Dong.
There is only time to save one.
Dong. Dong.
Which one? Which?!
Glimmil's eyes open. He is tightly gripping a spoon in each hand.
"We need to save them! We need to beat the six-armed demon monsters! Before it's too late!"
Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |
"Well the ... Dyrant, we've a compromise to forestall conflict while we investigate further. Will you journey with us to secure Alek, or would you prefer to bear this missive yourself?"
Finneas Glenn |
"Well, I thought we were going after Alek because your high priestess said he was important, but if you don't then we can do something different."
Atol Lem |
Atol shudders as if cold.
"We are not splitting up. Dyrant, I agree with Finneas, we should find Alek as Jenya suggested. We send a missive to slow the cities forces to Redgorge to buy us some time to get at the root of this problem and sort it out."
He looks at the group.
"We cannot be everywhere. We must decide our course of action tonight and follow through in the morning with haste. It seems to me that sending a letter and searching for Alek allows us to do two things at one time, whereas simply returning to Cauldron and then returning back here to hunt for Alek slows us down to the same end."
GM_Chris |
Summing up some offline conversations to clarify the situation.
The legitimacy and rational of the impending invasion is questionable and cloaked in secrecy, but doesn't make it any less real. The only person you know that you believe you could influence is Skellerang, but he is blindly loyal to the mayor and protective of Cauldron.
You've banked enough credibility and good will with Skellerang that you believe a note asking for a delay will be accepted. How long the delay will last I won't answer.
In regards to how to influence Skellerang, there are a couple ideas I see but won't suggest at this point.
The Chisel will work to convince Alek to withdraw his challenge, but only Alek can withrdaw the challenge; it's a birthright thing. With him missing, the challenge to Caudlron's authorities looms.
At this point, the Chisel only exerts political influence. They have no operations section aside from house guards and spies.
Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |
Dyrant looks at Finneas as if to correct him, but declines...
She is not *my* head priestess. She denied me Holy Orders...or did you forget my lack of divine spark?
...and instead addresses the matter at hand, his face contorting to a singularity of stinkface, as if he had just tasted Atol's cooking of Finneas' travel loincloth.
"BAH! This is all stupid. I should like to cudgel the Mayor and Skellerang...and that pasty Paladin, too, about the ears. We have actual evil in our midst in the form of Vhalantru and yet we gallop off chasing a phantom on a plate." Dyrant slams the table again with his clenched fist sending his bowl of gristle abump.
"Jenya sent us to find the answers from Alek, but they have just answered those questions. It was their idea that he challenge for the Guard. End of story." Dyrant rubs his chin and reaches for another bone.
Dyrant turns to Doctor Toffitt.
"Write your note, Doctor. We'll go chase phantoms while evil runs unchecked in Cauldron. We shall hope that Redgorge stands when we return. We'll hope that Alek is alive and able to fulfill his challenge to Skellerang because I do not feel he is competent to lead the Guard."
Dyrant gnaws on a bone, annoyed at things.
GM_Chris |
Atol gets to apply his mark to the letter and Oliron finds his best messenger to deliver the message to Skellerang. The man is a former guard still in good standing with Cauldron.
At some point I would like the actual text of the note.
The Chisel will provide accomodations for the party for the night. In the morning they will provide a sturdy raft/boat as well as any mundane supplies the party requests.
After a four hour trip down the river, the party arrives at a large beach that runs along the northern bank of the Red River. A couple hundred feet away from the river a badly weathered stone statue of some sort of humanoid creature stands at the edge of the jungle, overlooking the beach. The statue's neck ends in a stump, and its expressive canine head lies in the sand a few feet away. Patches of mold and moss grow on the statue, but the vegetation around it seems to be been cleared away recently. A narrow trail winds off to the northwest and into the jungle beyond the statue.
Atol Lem |
"I think the note should be simple and not subject to confusing interpretation. Maybe something along the lines of 'We, the Cauldron Five, have found reason to ask for a delay in your move against Redgorge. Please wait until our next missive while we track down a lead and confirm that the entire trip may not be needed to achieve your goals.'"
He looks to Dyrant, "What do you think? I don't want to confuse him with the facts as he might dispute them. Just get him to slow the process until we can return and set things right."
In the morning Atol changes his spells slightly, gathers a few extra rations, and sets off.

Toffitt takes out a few sheets of paper and begins drafting. "Let's see..."
Dear Captain Skellerang,
At the request of High Priestess Jenya, we have ventured to Redgorge to parlay with the paladin, Alek. Unfortunately, he has gone missing. Our fellow citizens of the Chisel do not know his whereabouts, although we have divined a clue.
We have reason to believe that some third party was behind the recently summoned fire elementals. Although we do not suspect him in those affairs, we believe that Alek may hold some clue as to the true perpetrator.
In the meantime, the members of the Chisel seem content to withdraw their challenge under the Law of Peers. We ask that you refrain from action against them and the citizens of Redforge while we search for Alek. We request that you wait five days before taking any hostile action against Redgorge. It is our hope that we might resolve this matter peaceably in that time.
Toffitt puts down his pen. "Is this sufficient? I feel we should share some detail of the situation, or Skellerang might dismiss our request out of hand."
. . . . .
Before bed, Toffitt asks Atol, "My friend, I wonder if the blessings of Cuthbert might help our weapons strike true against the denizens of hell. If we are traveling to an extradimensional portal, we are sure to encounter more creatures like that damned erinyes..."
