GM Granta |
@Mort & The Dude: Do you want to retcon your actions, given that the cleric just heard Tamriel's whisper?
Perception (DC 3): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
The cleric looks pointedly at Tamriel, "Distract me from what?" then starts paying closer attention to everyone in the room, "I'm afraid you'll all have to leave now."
If Mort still wants to palm the coin, we will resolve that first. Otherwise, the cleric is shooing everybody out of the room.
Noranti Pralatong |
"Well, if you're going to be rude!" the old, three eyed elf declares, then begins to walk away, keeping at least one party member between herself and the cleric in case of trouble.
sense motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Noranti tries to gauge the cleric's reaction. If she's watching me, I make a big show of leaving in a huff, trying to hold her attention and be a distraction for Tamriel. If she's still watching Tamriel and the others more closely, I cast Hypnotism on her (DC 16 Will save).

Krudenk |
Krudenk glares at Tamriel. "I thought he said you were attractive, not distract you."
bluff aid another: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
He can tell she's not buying it. He fingers his sap hanging from his belt cautiously and discreetly, wondering if he will need to use it.
The Dude With No Name |
So let's look at the situation objectively. Somebody basically came out and said: "If you won't help search, at least help distract the cleric," within earshot of the guard, while someone else without ranks in sleight of hand attempted and failed a pickpocket -casket attempt, and then someone else with interpersonal skills attempted to influence the situation.... No. No, I don't change my basic action. ;) Though now instead of distracting the cleric from the pickpocket I want to distract her from me.
The cleric looks pointedly at Tamriel, "Distract me from what?" then starts paying closer attention to everyone in the room, "I'm afraid you'll all have to leave now."
The Dude moves to stand beside and a bit behind the priestess.
"Yeah man! What the f%+@ you tryin' to pull! This is like a place of repose man! Show some f~&*ing respect!" He turns toward the cleric. "That said, I think you might want to call in some dwarves, you might have some serious subsidence goin' on here."

Round 1

- Noranti
- Tamriel
- Mort
- The Dude
- Hadriana
- Krudenk
Everybody except Krudenk is up.
Tamriel Tarallon |
Please don't resolves our actions until Noranti goes, I'm hoping that hypnotism actually works. I'm also going to assume that the trigger for this combat is Hadriana making her save against Noranti, as none of us have yet taken hostile action, and I doubt Hadriana would be likely to attack five well-armed adventurers without back-up.
"Well that went poorly," Tamriel mutters, blushing that he was so stupid as to let her overhear. If at all possible, he moves to block Hadriana's escape, willingly risking an attack of opportunity. He's wearing medium armor, so he doesn't punch her (lethal gauntlet). If he can't do that, Tamriel tries to grapple her.
Grapple (if applicable): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Mort Gloomhollow |
Ya I guess I should have just tried to cow her initially with intimidate like I wanted, but I was hoping for a more diplomatic resolution since she's just doing her job. Hopefully hypnotize does the trick since I can't use intimidate effectively now in combat.
Noranti Pralatong |
As I said, I'm putting another party member between me and the cleric, and casting Hypnotism. Hopefully, that will end the combat before it starts. DC 16 Will save.

Round 1
Effects none
- Noranti
- Tamriel
- Mort
- The Dude
- Hadriana
- Krudenk
Noranti tries to hypnotize Hadriana, but the alert cleric resists the elf's sorcery. Tamriel tries to grapple the cleric before any weapons are drawn, but can't get a good hold.
Mort and The Dude are up. I added a black bar for the door, that is the only way out of the building. Treat the skeleton as an obstacle/hard corner.
Mort Gloomhollow |
Mort shrugs his shoulders and leaves the crypt. He spends his turn double moving out and up towards the next crypt (away from the graveyard entrance) opening to head inside and explore.
GM Granta |
Vision is hindered in the red circle. You can only see adjacent squares, and even those have concealment. Assume the door is wide enough for somebody to 5-ft. into the square next to Hadriana.
Only Krudenk can see Hadriana right now, everybody else is two squares away (Noranti because of the hard corner).
Round 1-2
Effects none
Mort simply walks away, refusing to participate in such a fight. The Dude also chooses not to fight, but stays to see what happens. Hadriana steps out of the mausoleum and casts a spell, filling the area with fog.
Everybody is up.
Noranti Pralatong |
Well, that makes this easy.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
"Oh dear! I can't even see past my hand in all this smoke! Something must be burning."
Noranti 5 ft steps back, away from the cleric, and next to the skeleton. She then grabs the coin from its mouth, and puts it in her pouch. (two move actions)
"We should leave here and never come back. The service in this restaurant is awful, and I'm sure the food will be burnt."
bluff: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (14) - 2 = 12
Noranti plays the senile card... badly. Do I get a circumstance bonus from the cleric not being able to see me?
Tamriel Tarallon |
Tamriel sighs inaudibly. Hopefully we can explain to her once this is all over, I'd hate to have yet another place barred to me. Tamriel waits for the fog to dissipate, figuring they will have a bit of time to investigate and escape before the Hadriana returns with the guards.
GM Granta |
@Noranti: The room is small enough that you are now adjacent to Hadriana, but the action is farther away, so she won't know exactly what you did in with the skeleton, just that you reached back in that direction.
Round 1-2
Effects none
Noranti pockets the coin, while Tamriel waits to see if violence can be avoided.
Krudenk, Mort and The Dude are up.
The Dude With No Name |
"Hello!? Anybody there? I cant find the door!" He shovels the mist before his eyes with his hands to no effect. "...And someone is touching my leg!"
He suddenly jumps and spins ninety-degrees, landing in a sort of amateur martial arts pose, his hands up and stiff like garden trowels.
Full defensive.
GM Granta |
Round 2-3
Effects none
Mort tries to distract the cleric, while The Dude makes sure Krudenk doesn't hug him without permission. Hadriana backs up, and Noranti hears some mumbling that sounds like casting.
"Come forward with your hands in the air and lay down on the ground."
Everybody is up.
Krudenk |
Krudenk sees Noranti pocket the coin so he steps out of the tomb, his Lucerne hammer held high in a single hand.
"Please forgive my friends for their rudeness. We mean you no harm."
He continues walking towards the exit from the cemetary, holding his other hand against the wall of the tomb for guidance in the fog.
Only going half speed.
diplomacy: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (13) - 2 = 11
Noranti Pralatong |
Noranti continues babbling, switching to the Tien language, and walks out of the tomb as if ignoring the cleric, and talking to herself.
Single move out of the mist, which provokes an AOO from the cleric if she has a weapon out. But I'm just talking to myself and walking in the general direction of the exit, without acknowledging the cleric at all, so we'll see how threatening she thinks I am.
Once I'm out of the mist, I ready to use my Obey focus power on the cleric if she follows me out. If she does, I'll see her at the edge of the mist before she gets out, and she'll be 10 feet away, so I'll be able to do it without provoking.
The Dude With No Name |
But there's no facing in this version of D&D.
"OUCH! Do I have to open the door?" The Dude's call is followed by the sound of stone grinding on stone. "This really doesn't feel like an exit!"
bluff (distraction): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
"You know I'm an oracle, so there's a good chance that I have bad eyes, right?"
Tamriel Tarallon |
Hmmm... how likely is it that she can make good on her threat? She seemed to have little trouble with Noranti's... whatever that was. With how dangerous this world is, I'd assume she can handle a handful of untried Pathfinders.
Tamriel moves closer to the door, trying to be quiet, as he ponders his next move.
Making sure to stay within the fog.
Stealth: 1d20 ⇒ 20
GM Granta |
The cleric is not going to actually harm anybody without being physically threatened, so you may simply walk out of the cemetery if you so wish.
You guys haven't actually succeeded at the encounter as designed, and your role-playing "solution" has created the above problems. I could have Hadriana show up at the Grand Lodge with the city guard . . . or I could manipulate ask you to bring the party back onto the rails.
Noranti Pralatong |
Note to group: If we're going to solve an encounter with The Three Stooges approach, we should probably lie about who we are.
At this point, I think Noranti would just walk out of the cemetary with the coin, and try to figure out what it is and how it relates to our mission. She really would plan on returning it when we're done with it. Of course, she doesn't know if we'll still have it when we're done with it, but she's also chaotic enough not to worry about that detail yet.
Krudenk |
At least we got the coin. We couldn't even get in the gate to the mausoleum when I played this just barely. But yeah this was not good for the Pathfinder brand. We are a bunch of thugs. heh
Krudenk proceeds out of the cemetary. "Come on everyone. Let's leave this place."
Mort Gloomhollow |
Mort will make his way out of the graveyard once he sees everyone else doing so, hopefully gathering everyone together once out of sight of the place.
"That woman.. very much hard to reason with. She seems to take her job far to seriously, I had thought the Pathfinder name carried a bit more clout. Maybe putting our allegiances out there isn't always a great idea." He picks up his head and straightens his cloak "No matter, while the coin may have been a clue we must continue on. Lets head to this gnome's address to see what we find there."
Noranti Pralatong |
Once we're out of the cemetary, and far from where the cleric will see, Noranti pulls the coin out of her pocket.
"We should definitely examine this more closely. You're right that it could be a clue."
Noranti Pralatong |
"Is that a human femur? You know, those can come in handy for certain spells and potions. We could go back and give it to that nice cleric. Priests of Pharasma often know a spell called Defending Bone that uses something like that as a shield, in case they're attacked. Maybe we'll give it to her when we return the coin, after we're done with it. I could bring more muffins!"
Mort Gloomhollow |
Mort's mood perks up... if you can call it that, when he sees Noranti pull out the coin he saw in the tomb. "The coin, guess you got it done. That's good. What do you see on it Tamriel?" Perception Aid: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
He looks at Dude and his femur "Feel free to return that to her once we finish this run-around."

knowledge (history): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
The Dude picks up the coin, looks it over, bites it, looks it over again and says: "A gold auroch-headed five-penny in the Late-Azlanti style."
Once at the house the Dude offers friendly, Dude-like guidance on a host of topics he may have once seen demonstrated somewhere.
Mort Gloomhollow |
Mort also takes a look at the hard gotten coin Knowledge History: 1d20 ⇒ 18 "Old coin? In the mouth of a man not near that old. Curious."
Fimbrik's
Mort waits and listens as the half orc knocks on the door. If no answer he peers in the nearest window and knocks on that as well. Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Mort Gloomhollow |
Does he respond to the knocking on the window? If not Mort will knock louder
"There's a gnome in there with blue hair, reading a newspaper. I'll see if I can't get his attention, if anyone even cares."
Noranti Pralatong |
"I wonder if that coin is magical." Noranti wonders out loud.
Noranti watches the others knock on the door.
"If nobody answers, I have a key so we can just go in."
She pulls out a set of thieves tools (not even masterwork yet), but tries to hide what it is within her hand, in the hopes that the others won't realize.
sleight of hand: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Mort Gloomhollow |
Mort heads back to the group speaking as he goes "The little bugger is either hard of hearing or ignoring me." He then heads around the other side looking for a back door while looking around to see if there are any passerby's. Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Noranti Pralatong |
That was just a sleight of hand check to hide the lockpicks from the rest of the group. I haven't actually tried picking the lock yet.
"Oh I'm sure he won't mind if we just pop in to say 'hi'".
With that, Noranti tries to pick the lock on the door, despite Tamriel's protestations.
disable device: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
... but apparently she's no better at picking locks than she is at hiding the lockpicks.
