Just moments ago, Venture-Captain Adril Hestram stood beside you inside the great hall of the Grand Lodge in Absalom and said, “Good luck and gods speed. Find out what you can and get back in one piece.” With that, a masked member of the Decemvirate, gender and race impossible to determine under black cloth and an ornate face mask, muttered an incantation and teleported you nearly a thousand miles south, to the northern frontier of the necromantic nation of Geb. Just 24 hours ago, messengers from the Decemvirate banged on your door and demanded your presence at the Grand Lodge. Venture-Captain Hestram, it seemed, had received an important bit of news about work that a Nethys cleric Pathfinder named Rijana was doing in the Mana Wastes— important enough to summon you at such an early hour and demand your preparedness for a new mission assignment.

“Rijana is one of the best scholars on arcane mysteries that we have,” said Hestram as he paced back and forth. He shook a thin sheaf of papers in his hand. “This missive from her hand just a month ago tells a daring tale of hidden dimensions in the Mana Wastes that could be used to return magic once again to that failed, desolate garbage heap. I could care less about restoring magic there—but I care a lot about what bizarre ruins and hidden sanctums might have been concealed there while magic lay dormant. I haven’t the time to waste to send another message back and await its answer—I’ve asked a Decemvirute member, a powerful wizard, to teleport you to Rijana’s last known location, a dusty hamlet on the edge of the Wastes in northern Geb called Geb’s Rest. I’m sending the lot of you because Geb is dangerous, the Mana Wastes are deadly, and I want this thing done right.” Hestram snorted. “Well, I at least want it done. You lot will have to do. Get to Geb’s Rest, find Rijana, and bring back whatever notes she’s got in her journals about the Mana Wastes. She should have four journals if my memory of her bizarre organizational skills is correct—I want all four of them. Tell her I’m reviewing them for inclusion in the Pathfinder Chronicles, I don’t care. Just bring them back. Now get yourself ready to go—you can’t buy a decent potion within a hundred miles of this backwater dust pile.”

He took the measure of his mates, and waited to see if they had any questions for the Venture Captain.

Standing silently off to the side, you see a tall, dark human man with a dark weathered cloak and a longbow and quiver on his back. He wears a holy symbol of Desna around his neck.

Back at the original briefing:
There's a dwarf here as well, front-and-center, exuding both a sort of concentrated, primeval... dwarfiness... as well as smoke from a pipe clamped between her teeth. Judging by her white hair and the thousands of tiny wrinkles on her face, this is an old dwarf; judging by the fact that she is wearing a full suit of armor that appears to be made out of slabs of stone, she is still perfectly hale. Old, faded tattoos of dwarven runes, the blue ink weathered to near invisibility, are visible on her face and the backs of her hands. She smokes her pipe sedately, listening to the briefing, then knocking out some ash from her pipe into a vase that sits in Hestram's office.

The eyes that peer around at the others are shrewd and assessing. "Well, lads-- and lass-- appears we're traveling to a blighted place. Suits me. I'll do my best to bring you young'uns back home," she says deadpan, even if it's entirely possible that some in the group are older than her.

"The name's Magna, and I'll be best suited to warding you all from harm, here and there, and in a pinch healing your scrapes and your scratches. I follow the earth, and in turn the earth hears me, but don't you go thinkin' I'm some sort of tree-lover or big furry sasquatch or the like. Still... if you need a touch of nature in your corner, you ought to tell me, so's I can meditate on the best way to shore up the weakness in your mine, so to speak." Swapping some of my usual spells for the animal growth and strong jaw. Let me know if anyone else has a spell they'd realllly like me to have prepped; I'll consider it.

That said, Magna turns her attention back to Hestram.

"This Rijana. What's she look like?"

(Should be ready to go. So, one of the spells Magna keeps prepped is Communal Stoneskin, which requires 250 GP of granite/diamond dust for every person she affects with it. (She also has regular Stoneskin.) I'm carrying enough to cover everyone for at least one casting, but if the mission spreads over one day/night, and you're interested in having stoneskin up on you, I certainly won't object to you bringing the cost in dust to cover yourself.)

In the distance lies a squat, tumble-down hovel comprised of a few turrated domes, a collection of ramshackle huts, a solid, two-story inn, dusty red streets, and a large central fountain. There are maybe four dozen intact buildings scattered about the town, with the central hub largely surrounded by weedchoked ruins of a time when the town was more prosperous. As the group approaches Geb’s Rest, they see no signs of life at all. No people, no animals, no birds—nothing. The entire town is silent and vacant.

Magna gazes at the buildings off in the distance, has a last drag on her pipe, and then knocks it out against her stone greave before tucking it away and securing her shield on her arm (though she draws no weapon). She mutters a few spells over herself... partly to test that magic still works.

(Casting longstrider and barkskin on herself (11 hours for longstrider, 110 minutes for barkskin.)

She takes off her necklace and glances around at the others. "If you don't have some magickin' to harden your hide, I'll loan you this for the next two hours-- might turn a blade and save you a bit of bleedin'." (Magna's amulet of natural armor +1 is redundant with her barkskin; if anybody does not have a natural armor bonus and has their neck slot free, you are welcome to borrow it for the duration of her spell.)

After that, she hikes up her pack and strides along after the elf, able to match his pace now. "Don't get too far ahead, you twiggy little thing," she tsks. "You look like a stiff breeze'd blow you over."

(This is coming from a dwarf who's nearly as broad horizontally, in her stone fullplate, as she is tall, so take it with a grain of salt.)

"Can't imagine everyone inside," she answers Ruprecht, her old eyes scanning the sky and the dusty, barren earth. "Don't even see so much as a stray dog lying panting in the street. It's not natural."

I'll take 10 on Perception for a 41, with tremorsense out 20' as we walk towards the town. Magna is happy to help take point. Effective AC now 30.

The spell to copy books/one last purchase:
The only spell I know of that lets you copy books like that is Scrivener's Chant, a 0-level cantrip. Unfortunately, in scroll form it's more or less useless-- you'd need a single scroll of it for every single page you wanted to copy. However, Fredrik can memorize and cast it should we have an overnight and the need has arisen. So my last purchase will be 4 journals (40 GP), an inkpen (1sp), and a vial of ink (8GP), just in case we wind up needing it for any reason.

As a matter of course, at the beginning of the day, Friedel charges up her Natural Divination revelation by examining the entrails of two small animals (her Survival is good enough to take 10 to find them), and the flight paths of birds. She also has a bestow curse stored in her armor from the day before.

She casts Extended barkskin on herself, along with magic vestment and defending bone. Her sword is drawn, and has a 4th-level continual flame on it.

Magna knows that Geb is ruled by the undead, and they keep humans (and other races) around as a sort of 'livestock' for their unholy appetites. The nation of Geb has been at war with the nation of Nex for centuries. The Mana Wastes are a result of the warfare between the ruling wizards. All kinds of weird, twisted life forms call the area home these days.

Feel free to move your own tokens on the map. And I'm going to apologize in advance for forgetting to include the effects of any enchantments you have up. I will try to keep them all in mind, but don't be afraid to point out anything I've overlooked.

Nothing stirs in the town until the group reaches the central fountain. As you start to enter the square, several human shaped figures, dressed in chainmail and equipped with scimitars and shields, jump out of the shadows and advance upon the group. From one of the buildings to the east, a large creature that appears to be a cross between a skeleton and an insect moves into the square.

I'd like to try a kn check to identify the skellysect, but I'm not sure what KN skill it would be, so:

One relevant question before I actually post action: does the insect-skeleton thing have wings/is it hovering or anything, or on the ground?

Knowledge(planes) would be the correct roll. And yes, it is hovering at about the height of the building roof it is next to.

Glad I asked! No pits for you, Mr Flyer.

After her words, Magna gestures with her un-shield-bearing arm, muttering words; water coalesces out of the parched, dry landscape, and congeals around one of the armed figures.

Then, Magna takes a small step up to the old fountain's edge. (5-ft forward, just trying to give as much room possible for Benzyl. Casting Aqueous Orb on Yellow Target.

DC 21 Reflex save for Yellow or take 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8 NL damage. If he fails this save, he must make a second save or he will be engulfed and carried along by the orb. She won't be able to reach Red with it on this turn, though, because of diagonals *shakes fist*.

The large enemy is a bone devil, which are generally the torturers of devil-kind. They have a variety of defenses, including immunity to fire and poison, and spell resistance. The other enemies are some form of undead, but Fredrick isn't able to recall any specifics about them.

Ruprecht throws his bomb at the devil, hitting it square in the chest. It splashes over the thing, but does not seem to damage it as much as one would expect.(acid resistance)

Magna summons a large globe of water from the parched landscape, and launches it at one of the humanoids. The large glob of water splashes over the intended target, but does not seem to have any effect on it. It continues its advance towards the party.

Magna, as I read the spell, you have to take damage in order to make the second check or be swept up in the orb. Since these guys are undead, they aren't subject to non-lethal damage, and so don't have to make the second check.

The large creature starts chanting in a sibilant language.

Spellcraft, DC19:

Fredrik casts dismissal at the bone devil. Will DC 18

Gerdur charges the enemy to the north, landing a solid blow against his foe. Roland dismounts and prepares his bow for the coming fight. Fredrik casts a spell, attempting to banish the devil back to its home plane. Friedel casts a spell to augment her attacks, and commands her mount to charge. The giant elk is able to catch the devil with its antlers, causing a significant wound, and disrupting its casting.

@Friedel: Everything in this scenario is evil. So any attacks that land will bypass the DR.

Ruprecht's attack lands squarely in the chest of his opponent. The acid dissolves away much of the flesh from the creature's arms and chest. Magna fires off a flurry of snowballs at the devil and one of the undead, but they don't seem to have any effect on her opponents.

Reflex, DC20: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28

The undead are immune to cold. The devil has resist cold, which, with the reflex save, dissipates all the damage.

The devil mutters a sharp phrase, and suddenly disappears. Though it is no longer visible, a steady stream of chanting can be heard moving towards the northwest.
