GM WhtKnt's Giantslayer: Battle of Bloodmarch Hill (Inactive)

Game Master WhtKnt

Deep in the Mindspin Mountains, a storm giant warlord known as the Storm Tyrant has seized control of a cloud castle and an Orb of Dragonkind, and is gathering an army of giants from across western Avistan—first to bring the orc hordes of Belkzen under his banner, then to conquer the neighboring realms. Heroes defending the human town of Trunau from an orc raid discover that the attack is just a precursor to the Storm Tyrant’s larger plans. Working their way through an abandoned border fort, an ancient giant temple, the tomb of an undead frost giant, and an elite fire giant training facility beneath a dormant volcano, the heroes eventually take the fight to the Storm Tyrant himself inside his flying fortress. Can the giant army be defeated before it can conquer the human lands of the Inner Sea, or will all of Avistan bow down in fealty to the Storm Tyrant?

Zeviel looks about the room, though avoids touching much of anything. Someone had told her moving things about in a crime scene made it harder to solve the mystery. Or maybe that was in a book she read... Either way, no need to touch anything needlessly. As she looked about the room she hummed and hawed, doing her best to look studious and intrigued. In all honestly, she felt useless. She had little to no idea what she was doing here.

Maybe after they found some clues she could help put the pieces together...?

"So did we find, uh, anything?"

Seriously, policing was not her forte.

Aisha loiters near the rest of the group, feeling rather useless. She knows very little about investigations, so she leaves the searching for clues to people that know what they're doing.

"Do you anyone saw anything around here last night?" she asks Kurst, trying to think of something useful. "Someone that we might be able to talk to?"

After testing the window, crawling around the room, checking under mattress, bed and desk, Boram, covered in cobwebs, smiles as he exits the room, holding up a piece of paper in each hand. Handing Norasha the receipt in his left hand ”This one was under tha bed” he continues ”It appears ta be a receipt from ‘Morninghawk’s Fine Steel’ for engravin’ bein’ on a knife, I don’t remember seeing any engravin’ maybe we should talk ta this Urnsul, yeah?”

the receipt:
. It is a receipt of purchase from Morninghawk's Fine Steel for a hopeknife engraved with the words "For Rodrik, my love." The receipt is in Rodrik's name and the smith's name is Urnsul.

Then he hands the second note to Aisha ”An this note was hidden in tha desk, written ta someone named Melira, and it’s pretty incrimination! Do ya know who that might be?”

the note:
, "Melira, I shouldn’t be away for much longer. We still haven’t found what we’re looking for, but it’s only a matter of time, and the other preparations are proceeding as planned. A meddling militia patrol captain has been poking around, but I don’t foresee him being a threat for much longer. Once our work is done, it won’t matter anyway, and I can return to you. I marvel that I found you in the midst of all this, and think of you constantly. Soon, my beloved."

Boram then looks at the team and asks ”Does tha hand writing look the same to anyone, maybe we should add this Urnsul at ‘Morninghawk’s Fine Steel’ ta our list of people ta talk ta and start inquiring about this Melira, yeah?”

WhtKnt, what skill do we use to see if the hand writing is the same?

The handwriting on the two slips of paper are completely different, and no one in the group has ever heard of Melira.

Aisha accepts the note with a small nod and reads it over. "Gods. Incriminating is putting it lightly. A note abandoned by the killer at the scene of the crime... this has to be important. And it's a bit... frightening really. It... it reads like Rodrik was murdered. And because he was a threat to some larger plan."

Whistling a bit, the dwarf replied, Aye this be right down suspicious. I've never heard of this person. And like Boram said there be no engraving on the hope knife. Which is odd...although me thinks that Rodrik did stumble on something down right evil and wicked. This confirms that Rodrik didn't kill himself although we should still question the suspects and look for more clues. Y'all know there be some hardheads who will want more than just a simple note. But Rokar you said you caught a whiff of orc...hm...me thinks I have an idea about that: what if some knave was scouting the town for information on its weaknesses and Rodrik discovered this villain and said villain killed him making it appear to look like a suicide? It's a stretch mind you but still it is like ye said Aisha: somehow poor Rodrik became a threat to some evil plans or scheme. And indeed: both papers be important no doubt here! Also what do the rest of y'all know about this Morninghawk? Me and Boram wouldn't know much about the folks here unlike the rest of ye. Maybe we should talk to Cham now. Maybe she saw or heard something last night.

Rokar is surprised at the idea that Rodrik was murdered, but that quickly faded into an awkward relief as he realized that meant he wasn't, in fact, dead by his own hand.

I never thought I'd be relieved to hear the word murder... he thought, reflecting on how strange it felt before replying to Norasha.

Sara Morninghawk sits on the Council of Defenders, and she runs the smithy here in Trunau, Norasha. But I think you're right, we should talk to Cham - and fast. If there's someone in Trunau killing people they need to be found out and stopped. It's one thing to die fighting an enemy to defend your home. But this...

Rokar gestures to the blood-stained mattress, before finishing slowly, and with a steely resolve.

...is completely unacceptable, and I will see that it ends, now.

"How unusual that in a town this size even the most connected individuals aren't aware of a person by this name," Zeviel mused out loud. "Surely someone's at least noticed a female stranger. Or perhaps the guard is simply letting all manner of orcs wander about the town." She tosses her hands in frustration. She hated being in the dark about any going ons in the town. "Cham, have their been any outsiders or guests seeking a room recently? They may not have given their proper name."

Norasha readies herself, steeling herself for any approaching attackers.

Come on ye bastards of b+~&!es! This she-dwarf is ready ya!

Norasha is now ready against any approaches. So if any enemy gets near her or passes through an adjacent square, it'll interrupt their movement. Sorry if I got that wrong. Still adjusting some to differences from 3.5 rules.

As Norasha readies herself, Rokar pulls a chakram from his belt and hurls it towards the same wolf Boram and the Zeviel attacked.

A pack of wolves, in Trunau?! Rokar thinks, before switching his attention to Milani.

Quickly calling to mind the aspect of the bear, he strengthening his companion. A subtle gesture towards the tiger encourages her to hold her position between Rokar and Norasha, rather than charge forward.

Handle Animal - Heel - DC10: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Swift to activate Animal Focus on Milani, +2 STR for her

OK then, we hold the line!

Chakram Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 and Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Zeviel opens the combat with an acid splash against wolf 2, drawing a yelp of pain from the creature as the acid burns its snout. Boram follows up with a sling attack, but still the wolf stands. Norasha readies herself against an attack, even as Rokar looses a chakram. The circular blade hits the wolf squarely in the throat, bringing the creature low. The three remaining wolves are on the party in an instant, snarling and snapping angrily.

I'll allow Norasha and Milani to react before I roll the wolves' attacks.

With a wild roar, Milani lunges at the wolf directly in front of her, swinging first her left and then her right paw, vicious claws extended, before leaning in and trying her best to attack her foe with her teeth
