I'd let silence work on a crossbow bolt - the pieces of the bolt would still be there even if it didn't stay intact. You could always intentionally miss to make sure the bolt isn't destroyed, or cast it on a pebble and throw it among them (which would have the advantage of them being less likely to notice the source). But as Jetta points out, you would probably be better off just casting it on the ground among them and having everyone rush into the affected area. (It's a long range spell, so you'd be able to cast it among them just fine from your vantage point, and be far enough away that they'd be less likely to hear you while being close enough for the melees to rush in.)

In fact, I'll go ahead and post assuming that's how things shake down - frankly, three bugbears against the five of you isn't a terribly intense fight. Once silence is cast to negate the possibility of the fight signaling others, I think it's safe to make the altercation a cutscene and move on to the main event. ;)

I am ok with this. Delay my hugs! Also well written GM Rennai, as always :D

I'll cutscene the next fight tonight. Feel free to chime in with opinions on how to proceed until then. And I'm good with assuming it was cast on one of you guys, probably Jetta - I didn't specify when I typed out the scene before.

Also, just so you guys know, I found out yesterday that in order to finally fix for good the issues that put me in the hospital two months ago, I'm going to have to have gall bladder surgery sometime in the next few weeks. When I find out a date for certain I'll pass it along; just know there'll likely be an interruption in posting from that sometime in the near future.

When the player is more tired than the character they forget the previous posts. But it works for the groggy Amund :)

Oh, sorry. I thought that the crit was my first round action. :S

Edit: I also noticed that I used my enlarged stats for that the crit damage. Sorry about that. I've been a bit out of it this week...

If I recall the rules since he is the aggressor and I only matched the number I fail, right? And everyone else passes again. Dice roller is not loving me.

You would succeed, but unfortunately bless only applies to fear saves.

Jetta used Salt on the Wound. It's super effective!

Poke the GM everyone!

All right, folks...here's the deal. Medical issues started escalating again the last few days, sending me to the emergency room again last night. Migraines are starting to escalate again, work stuff is starting to escalate again, and depression/anxiety issues are starting to escalate again (perhaps unsurprisingly, given the laundry list above). The upshot of it all is that time at work to post is even more limited now, and I get home from work lucky to muster enough energy to make food and fall into bed.

I really, really hate to say it, and I've been agonizing over the decision, but I just don't have the resources to put into consistent posting right now, so I'm going to have to put this game on hold. I'm scheduled to have surgery in a month that hopefully will get my medical issues under control; work situation is less certain, but should (hopefully) be resolved within the next couple of months as well. So I'll be on hiatus for the next month and a half or so, to let myself get through surgery and recovery with less on my plate.

Midway through November I'll send messages out to everyone; if folks are still around and willing to pick back up, I should be fresher and ready to finish the story off. If not, I want everyone to know that I've truly had a great time with this game - it's not dissatisfaction with the storytelling we've done that's making me call things for now. You guys have been fantastic, and I've loved the chance we've had to enjoy this hobby together.

Until we meet again - thanks, everyone, so much.

Thanks for the heads, up, GM.

Best wishes regarding your health. This was indeed a fun run.

Hey, don't worry about it. You're a wonderful GM, and this game has been the best play-by-post that I've had the privilige of participating in. My days will no doubt be duller without it, but obviously your health comes first. I'll definitely be up to finish the story whenever you're feeling better. If not, I hope we'll get to share in some other adventures in the future.

The same applies to the rest of you, too! You're all great roleplayers. I hope I'll see you around. :)

Jetta stole the words right out of my fingers. Focus on getting better and once you are well let us known. This is most assuredly one of the best games I have ever been in.

GM, here is an unusual proposition.

How about you designate a spot in the module for us to stop at, and we wrap up this encounter, as I suggested a week or two ago (by voting for a temp GM from among ourselves)? Alternatively, we write up a cutscene to skip to that point and you approve it (cut and paste).
Three reasons why:
1. We'll have better closure if november comes along and you're unable to continue running this (the evil wizard dies from a heart attack),
2. We can have some downtime to prepare for the battle by crafting and training and managing (say a sudden storm grounds us) and light roleplaying
3. Staying on hold waiting for a PM for a month or more would have a demotivating effect. Making us all mini-gms (or designating one as a gm) will make things continue to move on and give some new blood.

If you'd rather go completely hands-off (or if the other players would also wish to drop out), that would be another case entirely, of course.

I know it's a long shot but I just started a Pathfinder PBP set in Eberron (old D&D Setting). See here.

I have four players and always like a 5th player.

So if you're an Eberron fan or would like to learn, send me a PM and we'll see about joining.

Full disclosure: my games are role playing intensive, move fast, and I expect players to keep up.

Game on!

This is a really good game (my longest-running), and I have no intention of walking away from it. I'll be here, and I look forward to when you're able to resume.

I'd suggest we give Rennai some time to determine if she'll be able to return to us before we assume the GM hat ourselves. Pausing the story won't diminish our interest in seeing it through, I know :).

Thanks, folks, for understanding. On an...interesting note, that ER visit on Thursday prompted a follow-up with my regular doctor today. She got surprised that I'd been put off that long with all the issues I'd been having, one thing led to another...and now the surgery that was supposed to be a month away is happening tomorrow. Little freaky and not at all how I expected my day to go, but it'll be nice to have it over and done with, and hopefully it'll mean being able to get back into the swing of things in a couple of weeks instead of a month and a half. :) Keep your eyes open for a message from me!

That's great! Sending positive vibes your way.

Surgery went off perfectly apparently - I wasn't exactly watching to critique ;). Recovery's definitely still ongoing, but I got through a couple miles of walking yesterday and I only want to die a little right now. Been back at work for a week, think I have my head back on mostly straight - time to get back to roleplaying!

So go ahead and sound off - is anyone alive out there? If I hear back from enough folks, I'll look at getting started back up Friday evening.

@Amund: Hey, that squee was strictly out-of-character. :P

@GM Rennai: So, as I recall, our heroes have been up for most of the night. Could we reasonably make it back to the fort for the night, or would sleeping in the bugbear camp be more practical?

male Human Cavalier lvl 6 Order of the Shield Init +2; Senses low light, Perception +11, HP 61 out of 61, Fort +7, Ref +4, Will +3 - AC 18, 12 touch , 16 flat-footed, CMB +9; CMD +21, Challange x2per day, Tactician x3 per day,

@ Jetta: Fine the player squeed and the character pouted. Also sorry but he is a little on the grumpy side :)

@Jetta: You are indeed at about 0900 hours right now, having been up all night chasing the bugbears down. There's one among you who's fatigued, which means if there's any encounters along the journey back he'll be a little less potent. With the hedge around and the river behind, the bugbears' camp does appear to be a reasonably secure spot, especially if you barricaded the hedge entry and set a watch. If you left now, you would be able to make it back to the fort by sundown (although you wouldn't beat dusk by a lot). You could also consider using the bugbears' boats to travel by river, which would allow some to rest while the others navigated.

The Exchange

Male Humanoid (Human), HP 55, Fort +8, Ref +4, Will +11, Init +4, Perception +11, Sense Motive +9 Cleric 7

Perry votes for navigating on the boats.

We shan't delay the final confrontation any more.

Once the place is cleared then razed.

I agree with Perry and would support taking the quicker route toward the story's resolution.

I'm all for expediency, but I don't think it really matters what we do in-character in that regard: any route we take can be narrated to fit the purpose, so there's no need to rush things or make any decisions that would be out of character for the PCs. Jetta certainly wouldn't torch a strategic resource, but she'll start rowing if that's the consensus. I'm not intending to settle down in the camp or anything... :P

It's not a resource; it's a location. I don't see anything special in it.

But if not everyone is on board, fine by me. It would sure make a dramatic exit.

...and would serve to herald the crazy pyromaniac growing within Percival.

Eyes glimmering with fire, he whispered subconsciously, 'Yes--yes...burn...burn!'

As far as I know, a fortified position is a resource: as in, it's an asset we can use in the defense of our holdings. Or maybe I'm just fuzzy on the definition. :S

male Human Cavalier lvl 6 Order of the Shield Init +2; Senses low light, Perception +11, HP 61 out of 61, Fort +7, Ref +4, Will +3 - AC 18, 12 touch , 16 flat-footed, CMB +9; CMD +21, Challange x2per day, Tactician x3 per day,

I agree!

I just remembered the poor horses tethered in the woods! This is what I get for having my guts revolt against me. To save time, I'll split the group into two - Jetta and Balthus rowing, Amund riding with Percival and Anthuria. That puts two strong rowers on the river, the best Handle Animal working with the extra horses, and the less physical types with the quickest getaways. Sorry I'm having to make an executive decision, but I didn't want to hold things up any longer than my mad weekend at work already has.

No problem. We already had a majority on getting back to the fort ASAP, so making that happen whichever way makes the most sense is a priority.
