Thanks for being patient, everybody. :)

Winter Court at Kyuden Hida is usually a tense, dour affair. While the Yasuki host most guests at the Razor of the Dawn castle, Kyuden Hida is the heart of Crab-Crane relations. Daidoji diplomats honor Hida Kisada's court with their presence, and the winter is spent "eating breakfast two ri north of the mouth of hell" as Kisada's karo puts it. Often, Crabs who haven't been off the Wall in months are given leave to relax at court and more socially adept, lowland samurai are brought in to help them adjust.

At its best, this buddy system means the Wall samurai shows the clan's might around court and the lowlander tempers him with gentility. More often, the result is a paranoid, trash-mouthed killer stuck with a rookie village-watcher who doesn't know where anything in the castle really is. After a few weeks, they part and settle on opposite sides of the castle from other Clans, who know they must have done something wrong to get such a lousy diplomatic post.

But this year, all that promises to change. Hiruma Kage, the genteel warrior-poet and daimyo of the Hiruma, turned twenty-seven in the month of the Monkey. Having no siblings, no spouse and no heir, if Kage were to die, the Hiruma family noble line would effectively end. Since the average life span of a Crab berserker is rarely past thirty, Kisada demanded Kage choose a bride.

Kage had in mind Doji Rumiko, with whom he had exchanged haiku the previous summer, but when they met, he found her a sincere, wealthy courtier who was mostly good at getting talented friends to write letters in her stead. Annoyed, he continued his search through the Matsu and Ikoma, and wound up far to the north, where, to everyone's surprise, he fell deeply in love.

As an acting daimyo, Kage has the unique leeway to marry whom he wishes. Isawa Mutsuye, a seventeen-year-old cousin of Shiba Ujimitsu, qualified. She was from a traditional, wealthy background, attractive, educated, devout, interested in history, and best of all, she impressed him even when they went walking alone. Kage returned to the Crane lands carrying her fan.

After the Crane lodged complaints against him for "implicitly" agreeing to marry Rumiko, Kage told them just what else they could imply and where they could lodge it. Furious, the Crane withdrew their nakodo (go-between), forcing Kage to rely upon a Scorpion to be the neutral messenger as he arranged to bring his chosen bride to Crab lands for their marriage.

The wedding of a family daimyo is never small news, and a large retinue of Phoenix, and delegates of Lion, Scorpion and Unicorn are taking advantage of the court to talk business face-to-mempo with Hida Kisada.

Shosuro Ayumi:
Surely a courtier as talented as yourself doesn't belong in the Crab Court. You would only do that if you had no better options. Unfortunately, your daimyo considered it a practical location to distance yourself from the murder of you sister. He even assured you he that other members of your clan have stayed in Crab lands before. One even enjoyed it. His name was Nanimaru, and it was three generations ago: practically yesterday! Your daimyo promises he'll write.

Isawa Katsuko:
Eager to finally study with the Kuni, you leapt at the chance to join Asako Wataru's entourage to Kyuden Hida for Winter Court. Unfortunately, your daimyo expects you to do more than simply study. You are a rising star within the Clan. Isawa himself speaks to you, on occasion. You must represent the Phoenix well, and that begins with the presence of a Lion yojimbo for the length of your stay. Also, why don't you keep an eye out for a nice man? Wataru-san is sanctioned to allow any Phoenix marriages, after all.

Shinjo Nagasawa:
As a teaching liaison between the Hiruma and Shinjo, you are actually already stationed at Kyuden Hida. Currently, you are accompanying Shinjo O-Shimo to meet with the rest of the Unicorn contingent, led by your acquaintance Ide Toshimitsu.

Would your betrothed come to Winter Court?

Hida Yuo:
You are a Crab. Your place is on the Wall. At least, it was. Somebody must have mentioned that you had some social skills, because now you've been ordered to attend Winter Court. This has Kaiu Takakana written all over it.

Kuni Daigo:
As a Witch Hunter, your job is to track down and destroy any trace of Jigoku. Which makes your current assignment to Winter Court odd. Surely there are better opportunities for your talents.

Would your wife and child join you at Winter Court?

Akodo Takaji:
Thanks to your service to Matsu Kenichi, you find yourself attending Winter Court in Kyuden Hida. His wife is here to negotiate a number of political marriages and as a gesture of good faith with the Phoenix, you are assigned to serve as yojimbo to a scholar of some distinction, Isawa Katsuko. Surely this is what your ancestors intended for a warrior like you.

Carved with lightning by Osano-wo from the stone of a single mountain, the dread fortress of Kyuden Hida looms before you. Located atop a high stone escarpment, the castle’s masonry blends seamlessly with the rugged landscape, its walls hewn from pure granite reaching into the living rock of the land beneath. There is nothing subtle about Kyuden Hida, no gardens surround the walls, no paintings adorn its state rooms. It is the mightiest fortification in Rokugan. In more than a thousand years, no Rokugani had ever dared to assault Kyuden Hida, and when fortress was in view of the Battle of the Cresting Wave not so much as a single arrow hit its walls.

A cold, dry wind howls mercilessly from the north, tussling hair and pulling at loose kimonos. The bushi know that it is the sort of wind that can burn the skin, but the Fortunes are good: at least it does not blow from the south. Massive iron gates stand open, with an honor guard of twenty heavy Hida infantry. Perhaps most imposing of all is the skull. Over twenty feet long and lined with rows of jagged teeth, a fully-armored Unicorn bushi could ride his mount through it and complain of the ease of the task. It once belonged to the Oni Lord known simply as "The Maw". Cleansed and purified by the Kuni shugenja, it stands as a symbol of the Crab's strength. To the that dwell in the Shadowlands to the south it serves as a simple threat: "Challenge the sons and daughters of Hida and face oblivion."

Your parties are escorted to the lower gatehouse, where a servant fetches a rotund Crab, keeping warm in his heavy armor. Somewhat rustically, he is chewing on a stalk of wheat. He bows low and addresses the entirety of the assembled Great Clan entourages.

"I am Kaiu Takakana, karo of this castle. That makes me responsible for keeping this court secure. It also makes me responsible for the entire right flank of the Kaiu Wall. If you have any idea what that means, you will not interrupt me unless your need is that great. We have more than three thousand bushi stationed here, so rest assured that if an Oni attacks, we can keep casualties down to less than half your number. That count does not include whenever a bunch of pony samurai whose sole purpose here is to get drunk and chase kimonos start playing with their swords in public. If such a thing were to happen, I'd have to keep your katanas safely locked away from such miscreants." He turns and leads the group under the gatehouse, his voice carrying easily. This is a man used to leading on the battlefield. The skull of the Maw hangs ominously above you.

"If you ever hear a rapidly clanging bell or see a red flare explode outside, do not panic. Gather those you care about and march in a quick but orderly fashion to your room and bar the door. Open it for no one, not even me or Kisada-sama, until you see the green flare. If the flare does not come, stay in that room until spring. If you see a blue flare, which, I should point out, we have never had to launch in the last one thousand years, please line up your loved ones in an orderly fashion and look beneath your futon for a sandalwood case. Inside are three parts of a naginata and a set of instructions. Assemble this naginata. Take a position by the door where there is room enough to swing. Then behead your loved ones, because you don't want them here for what happens next."

A couple of shocked gasps brings a lop-sided smile to the karo's scarred face. "So relax and enjoy your Winter Court."

You find yourself in the parade grounds of Kyuden Hida. Heimin servants immediately begin unpacking luggage and dressing down mounts. A slight Yasuki woman stands in the middle of the crowds, dictating orders to a number of younger courtiers.

What do you do?

M Lion Clan Akodo Bushi 3 (Glory 2, Status 1)

Takaji sizes up the giant skull as they walk through, careful only to move his eyes over it lest he appear too interested in it. Hmmm, I'm sure I'll have no trouble getting some Crab bushi to proudly relay the story behind that to me. His lips twitch upwards briefly in the barest hint of a smile.

He silently listens to Takakana-sama's instructions, his face impassive until the end when the barest hint of a frown flicks across his face. He shifts his weight slightly, uncertain as to how seriously to take the great warrior's words. I guess I'll know when or if it comes up.

He looks around and politely asks someone to point out Isawa Katsuko. Picking her out of the crowd he approaches her and bows deeply.

"Isawa Katsuko-sama, the honorable Matsu Kenichi-sama has graciously bestowed upon me the privilege of seeing to your security during your stay at Kyuden Hida. I am called Akodo Takaji. Douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu."

Takaji looks pretty much like a typical Lion, right down to his dyed blonde mane of hair. In contrast his voice, while loud enough to be clearly heard above the clattering of servants and talk of others in the area, lacks the boisterousness commonly associated with other members of his clan. As a whole, he seems rather unremarkable: yet one more man in golden colored armor just like the rest of the Lion contingent.

M Unicorn Clan Shinjo Bushi (Shinjo Scout) 3

Nagasawa finds the arrival of bands of samurai from other Clans only of passing interest. His attention falls more fixed to the comings and goings of the Crab peasantry in some bizarre and characteristic Unicorn fascination with the lower classes.

He and the rest of Shinjo O-Shimo's retinue are arrayed in fastidious formation; line after imperious line of bushi polished to their parade best and meant to visually impress any arriving delegation, especially those from our own Clan.

Baraq paws at the turf of the parade ground as he picks up on Nagasawa's building impatience. Who are my clansmen trying to impress by arriving fashionably late? Such things are lost on the Crab, and we're ill-suited as a stationary display...

Nagasawa's thoughts are interrupted as he watches a heimin tend to a horse with a familiar mon woven into the saddle blanket. He raises a hand over his eyes to see better, then blurts "Takaji-san?" He raises in the saddle and scans the highway beyond the gates. Still seeing no impending Unicorn delegation, he impulsively breaks ranks. His mount trots across the parade ground as lightly as the late-autumn breeze, passing unobtrusively between comers and goers with the agility of a great cat. He draws up short of Akodo Takaji, not having darted across the grounds before his old friend has found himself embroiled in a serious introduction. I'll have to catch up with that old glory hound another time.. but soon. I can't wait to tell him he'll have to inform his grandfather I got hitched first...

Nagasawa leaves his friend's serious business uninterrupted and sees a fortuitous parting of peasants and samurai in the parade field. He spurs Baraq to a lightning gallop before the opportunity passes. He enjoys the snapping of his sashimono and the rush of oncoming air over his face before languidly resuming his place in formation. He looks past the disapproving glower of his Gunso to bask in the envy of the other Unicorn aching to break free of unnatural motionlessness.

Nagasawa's betrothed:
I hadn't expected her to be here, but if you want to take her on as an NPC it'd be quite the fun surprise for her to arrive. I paid for the drawback, afterall. (if you really want to torture Nagasawa, she can arrive with her twin sister...)

Hida Yuo stood among the other Crab Bushi returning from the Wall, but he did not appear to be one of them. Many of them looked like they needed a rest, none more so than those complaining the loudest. The rest were telling crude jokes and looking forward to some rest. But Hida Yuo seemed neither angry, nor happy at his current predicament. He simply stood among the others, quietly watching.

A silent bow to Kaiu Takakana as he reports is his only movement. As he straightens, he hefts a massive Ono to rest on one shoulder. He moves where he is directed and stands where he is told to.

Why am I here?

Doesn't matter to me regarding the wife and child. I hadn't specifically planned on them attending, but have no problem with them being there either. Whatever makes things easier/more interesting for you as the GM.

Kuni Daigo walks without his armor, wearing a comfortable kimono and has left his sugegasa off out of respect for the occasion. He is, however, in full face paint as he wanders the outskirts of the gathering. He tries to observe the other attendees as best he can, attempting to make a mental note of those that spend too much time either hovering around the centers of attention or trying their best to hide from the same.

Hearing that, as a traveler, he is likely to be paired with another member of the Crab clan as a guide or yojimbo, Kuni Daigo begins to shift through the crowd seeking his assigned attendant.

The grand battlements of Kyuden Hisada impressed the singular purpose of the Crab Clan in way that Katsuko could only describe as intimidating. The bushi taking reprieve from their station on the Kaiu wall might temper their stoicism with laughter, but the stones of this fortress held no such mirth. The heart of these people was carved from this same stone, and while she couldn’t help but feel out of place among the gathered diplomats, she felt some reassurance that she had made the right decision in asking to join the ranks of her clan’s entourage.

The position of attendant diplomat was not a particularly prestigious one, nor were many from her clan eager to traverse the length of The Empire to attend court in the heart of Crab lands. Katsuko’s master was surprised to see her so eager to take on a duty others were ready to draw lots for. Her family’s daimyo was most pleased with the news that a shugenja of note was offering to attend, and he likely hoped that Katsuko’s interest in the Crab Clan would lead to yet another promising betrothal.

The thought of marriage set Katsuko to chewing on her lip until she remembered that she was standing in a crowd of influential dignitaries from several major clans. She had nearly settled on fiddling with her hair sticks instead, when she noticed a purposeful looking Lion bushi picking his way through the crowd toward her. She folded her hands in front of her as he approached. Standing before her, he bowed deeply.

"Isawa Katsuko-sama, the honorable Matsu Kenichi-sama has graciously bestowed upon me the privilege of seeing to your security during your stay at Kyuden Hida. I am called Akodo Takaji. Douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu."

Katsuko had only spared him a cursory glance before, but now she looked at him in earnest. She had only been assigned a personal guard once before, and it had been a sour experience.

Katsuko bowed. “Douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu, Akodo-san. I am honored to be guarded by the blade of one of Akodo’s sons. Since you are now tasked with safeguarding my life, I request that once the dust of our arrival has settled, you join me for tea - that I might divine your personality, and most importantly, your taste in tea.” She smiled.

M Lion Clan Akodo Bushi 3 (Glory 2, Status 1)

Tea? Takaji wasn't sure what he had expected from the Phoenix woman, but that wasn't it. But then, she was a scholar. So he supposed it wasn't that surprising that she'd respond with social niceties instead of the practical orders he'd get from a Lion charge. If this kept up, it was going to take some getting used to. Could be worse though. At least she seemed friendly rather than haughty.

He bows again in acknowledgement. "I would be honored to join Isawa-sama for some conversation and tea. Is there anything you wish to be seen to in the meantime?"

Just for the record, I know very little about tea. :P

Ayumi looked up at the battlements of the fortress with some trepidation, not due to the intimidating presence of the skull or samurai, but rather what her presence there meant. Being so far from Scorpion lands, especially in regards to what had happened back home, was not something that she had envisioned. To be honest, it felt like an exile of sorts, though she knew that not to truly be the case. Still, the woman couldn't help but wonder if someone was truly out to get her...

Seeing the other clans' entourage gathering around made her a bit more comfortable, but it nevertheless made the Shosuro feel isolated as well. Despite her daimyo's assurances, she highly doubted that any of her clan felt welcome here. Still, it never paid to reveal such things, and her face bore a smile beneath the lace-like mask she wore. Her red and black kimono was only a shade darker than her hair, which was done up rather well with black and gold pins and a black silk lattice for decoration.

Upon hearing the announcement of the Crab's karo, Ayumi nodded to herself, approving of the seriousness that they took their duties in at the least. She fervently hoped that she would not have to deal with such warnings, but it was good to know. Moreover, it would seem that the others were already starting to mingle, especially the Lion and Phoenix. Fiery personalities will flock together, she supposed.

Looking around, the Scorpion listened in to some of what the other courtiers were talking about, while also looking to the Yasuki woman giving orders.

Ameiko dips her sun umbrella back so that she might get a better look at the fortress. As she does so, she idly spins it a bit and the silver cranes painted up the sky blue background seem to fly in circles behind her head.

Well, if anything this place certainly looks imposing though rather uninspired. Clearly someone doesn't know that things can be functional and still be artistic.

Making her way up to the fortress with the rest of people there for the festivities, Ameiko listens as the portly Crab gives his instructions and attempts to frighten the more gullible members of the crowd.

When he is done, Ameiko looks about the crowd for anything interesting or for at least someone worth conversing with. The colors of her kimono and umbrella both clearly mark her as being a Crane and far as she knew, she was likely to be the only one there and thus felt a bit like a lone blossom blown away from it's tree in the wind.

Shinjo Nagasawa:
The air splits with the bright sound of a horn. Only one clan uses such an instrument to announce their presence: yours. A small contingent of Unicorn approaches the fair grounds: from the look of it, it is Ide Toshimitsu and his family, accompanied by a group of bushi.

Another rider approaches you from behind, your superior Shinjo O-Shimo. "That was poor form to break rank in front of the other clans. It makes the Unicorn look undisciplined." Although it is a rebuke, she offers you a slight smile to take the sting away. "Come, Nagasawa-san, let's great our newly arrived brothers. I have a surprise for you." With that, she spurs her mount towards the others.

Hida Yuo:
You are approached by the Yasuki trying to coordinate the arrivals of the Clans. She is a slight woman in her early thirties and looks extremely harried. She bows quickly when she finds you. "Hida Yuo?" she asks.

Kuni Daigo, Shosuro Ayumi, & Doji Ameiko:
Since you all seem to be doing similar things, ie. observing the movements of the crowd and taking in conversation, I decided to lump you into the same spoiler. Feel free to approach anybody or do anything. :)

The parade ground is pandemonium. At least four Great Clans are here in force: the Phoenix, the Lion, the Unicorn, and the Scorpion. The courtiers of each clan scramble around, trying to consult with the Yasuki regarding where their lords will stay and where the festivities of the Winter Court are to begin. More than anything on the lips of those socializing however, is the impending marriage of Hiruma Kage, daimyo of the Hiruma family. The Phoenix girl he had supposedly fallen in love with was here somewhere, no doubt cloistered by her family to prevent too much contact with other Clans before the ceremony could take place.

Despite the chaos, you can see several opportunities to meet new people. A Phoenix and Lion stand together, speaking as if meeting for the first time. A pair of Unicorn are riding out to meet another contingent of their clan. A Kuni and a Yogo shugenja stand apart of the crowd, looking conspiratorial. A pair of young Phoenix women wander through the crowd, wide-eyed. A handsome Scorpion bushi in full armor stalks by. And of course, you see each other.

Hida Yuo looks at the small woman impassively, slowly removing the massive Ono from his shoulder, it spins in his grip and the head deliberately taps the ground as it is held, like a walking staff, in front of him. He bows to the woman.

Yes, he replies simply. Remaining silent, he stands before her seemingly patient as a statue.

M Unicorn Clan Shinjo Bushi (Shinjo Scout) 3

Shinjo Nagasawa bites his lip at himself for having been so foolish as to forget to account for O-Shimo-sama's location before his brash maneuver. Then he purses his lips to from smirking at his Gunso after having been selected to accompany her to welcome our clansmen.

Baraq trots as if gravity has somehow lessened command over his mass as Nagasawa beams at having been selected to accompany his Lady. The crimson horsehair crest of his gaijin helm waves with every hoofbeat as he joins with Shinjo O-Shimo as she rides through the throngs of samurai at the massive gates.

He rides in respectful formation with his superior, to her left and slightly behind. He waits for her to formally greet Ide Toshimitsu at the head of the arriving Unicorn delegation. He removes his ostentatious helm before bowing politely in the saddle to the courtier after Nagasawa is formally recognized.

Kombawa, Ide Toshimitsu-san. I have looked forward to meeting you in person for some time now. If it were my place to do so, I'd have been honored to bid you welcome to Kyuden Hida.

Umbrella raised to ward off the sun, Ameiko strolls gracefully about the parade ground, attempting to be an island of calm in the sea of all this confusion. Her gaze sweeps over the members of the Phoenix clan that are milling about the ground and settle upon the two young women wandering about the crowd. Hmmm, perhaps I should at least attempt to make the acquaintance of a Phoenix or two if I wish to learn more about the bride to be."

Attempting to make the direction of her stroll seem random, Ameiko makes her way towards the pair of young women and eavesdrops on what they are saying before making contact.

Kuni Daigo walks over to the Kuni shugenja and waits nearby, careful not to interrupt the conversation, but close enough to make it clear that he wishes to speak. Assuming that one of the speakers turns to him, he'll introduce himself with a bow.

"Kuni Daigo. I must admit that I am unused to these gatherings but I assume that the two of you share common experience with me."

He'll go about talking to them and hopefully, if they were talking about something Shadowlands-related, get an idea if there is a reason to be unusually concerned of taint or tainted individuals being at the Winter Court.

Hiding a smile to herself, Ayumi spotted someone that might make for an interesting conversationalist, at least she hoped. As she passed several of the other courtiers, she eyed the Scorpion bushi, making an effort to memorize his features for later. It wouldn't hurt to get to know someone like him either,' she thought to herself, before moving to the edge of the crowd where the Yogo shugenja stood.

"Good day to you clansman, and may the Fortunes watch over you. I can't help but wonder how you are faring so far? I must admit, this is a lot more than I expected at a court of our shelled cousins. Is there any insight a man of the kami could grant to one such as I?" she said, laying on the charm a bit.

Katsuko unfurled her fan and gestured idly. "Come, Takaji-san, there is no need to observe such subordination. I am honored by your humble character, but please address me as Katsuko or Katsuko-san. I assure you no harm will come from such familiarity." She looked out upon the crowd. "It seems that it will be some time yet before we are ushered to our quarters. While our Clans are still mingling, I would like to hunt down a spiritually-inclined member of the Kuni family and make their acquaintance. If you aren't put off by the words of shugenja, you are welcome to attend."

Giving him a look that implied her sympathy, she snapped her fan shut and started towards what appeared to be a smaller delegation from the Kuni family within the ranks of the Crab Clan. Perhaps finally some light could be shed on the mysteries that eluded her.

M Lion Clan Akodo Bushi 3 (Glory 2, Status 1)

I'm going to ignore the name thing for now due to my question in the discussion thread. If need be, I'm ready to retcon and respond appropriately later.

Not about to shirk his duty, Takaji bows his assent as he follows Katsuko to to Kuni shugenja. Meanwhile mentally considering her words. 'Spiritually-inclined'? Does this mean she wishes to speak on Shinsei? Wouldn't her own clan know more on this topic than the Crab? Or even a Dragon. The Crab aren't particularly known for their spirituality.... Merely their knowledge of... His thoughts trail off as his heartbeat picks up slightly in excitement. Best not to think too hard on this matter. I probably won't even understand what they have to say to each other.

Once they reach the members of the Crab Clan in question, Takaji takes up a casually defensive position. He watches their surroundings for possible threats while attempting not to appear too interested in the conversation at hand.

Shinjo Nagasawa:
Ide Toshimitsu bows low in the saddle, a gesture for Shinjo O-Shimo that encompasses you. Now that you are are closer, you notice more of his entourage. He is accompanied by his wife and daughter, a 16-year old girl with long, uncut black hair and a sleeveless kimono. She watches you with wide eyes. Behind her are a group of Moto bushi, an escort for this final piece of the Unicorn presence at Kyuden Hida.

The middle-aged courtier smiles. ”Konbanwa, O-Shima-sama. Nagasawa-san. I am pleased to finally make your acquaintance. I see that Nari-san’s description of your incautious nature are not far off the mark.” He gestures to the other samurai. ”This is my wife, Ide Baissako, and my daughter, Keiyomi.”

Hida Yuo:
The Yasuki nods quickly. ”My name is Yasuki Kurako. Kisada-sama has placed me in charge of running his court. Takakana-san informed me that you are to be assigned as yojimbo to an important guest. Her name is Doji Ameiko. With all the Lion about, I suspect she will need a protector. Can you do this?”

Doji Ameiko:
The girls are a pair of teens, although their fashionable kimonos mark them as nobility. The older girl’s kimono bears an Asako mon, while the younger wears the badge of Isawa. The younger clings to the older’s sleeve and is constantly speaking in hushed tones.

Doji Ameiko Perception TN 15:
While the younger one seems to be mostly astounded by the number and diversity of people here, you do hear her say ”Oh, Kuhime, I am going to miss Mutsuye when she moves away and gets married.”

Shosuro Ayumi:
The bushi that stalked by you was Bayushi Tatsukoro, the leader of the Scorpion delegation. He is not difficult to miss with his red mempo resembling a sneering demon.

Kuni Daigo, Shosuro Ayumi, Isawa Katsuko, & Akodo Takaji:
The four of you manage to approach the pair of shugenja almost simultaneously. The Kuni is short and squat with a painted face and long greasy hair. The Yogo accompanying him is taller and wears a simple full mask of crimson silk. The Yogo wears clothing that completely covers his skin.

”Good afternoon, friends. My name is Kuni Taira and this is my friend Yogo Shigeru. We were just discussing the finer points of troll anatomy. Would you care to join us?”

Shigeru addresses Ayumi in a grating, deadpan voice. ”Fortunes shine upon you as well, Shosuro-san. I know that there will be a dancing competition later this evening. I expect that the kami would appreciate your presence there. Mmm… they do love it when a beautiful woman such as yourself dances.”

M Unicorn Clan Shinjo Bushi (Shinjo Scout) 3

Oh, what witchcraft does Nari possess to torture me so from far away? She's already gotten me off on the wrong foot with the only friendly courtier at the Palace...

Shinjo Nagasawa nods somberly to Ide Toshimitsu. After a moment's thought, he offers a refrain so often heard from Shinjo Maku-sensei: "Cleverness has never been associated with inaction."

In case a roll is necessary to prevent this hasty (and overly defensive) rebuttal to defend my reputation from escalating into something that could backfire:
Etiquette/Awareness Roll, 4k3: 4d10 ⇒ (8, 10, 4, 4) = 26
Exploding 10: 1d10 ⇒ 10
Exploding 10: 1d10 ⇒ 8
Final roll: 40! Hopefully quite sufficient to acquit myself as being quick to act but at least appear to be quick between the ears as well!

Nagasawa bows politely in turn to each of the introduced ladies. It is my sincere pleasure to meet you both.

As he takes in Keiyomi's wondrous gaze, he gestures up to invite her to drink in the grandeur of the Maw's skull. He steals a bit of inspiration from Kaiu Takakana's practiced introduction. "You may have come two li north of the mouth of hell, but I've trained with these Crab for some time. They are among the most capable bushi in the entire empire. He continues after indicating the burly Unicorn bushi escorting her family. "Please be assured that within these walls you could not be better protected even by our own Moto cousins."

M Lion Clan Akodo Bushi 3 (Glory 2, Status 1)

Response to the name thing
Takaji blinks. And then blinks again, repressing a blush at the rather...ahem intimate nature of the comment. He gives a slight bow in acknowledgement of her words. Oh Matsu-sama, what have you gotten me in to this time? Let us hope that I can find a way to simply avoid the issue.

After
As they approach the two shugenja, Takaji makes note of the others with similar destinations. Especially the Scorpion woman. Could just be coincidence that we have the same destination; one of the shugenja is a clansman after all. Or could be more. You can never really tell with the Scorpions. Best keep an eye on her, just in case.

He bows politely at the introduction and offer for them to join, but unless directly addressed, opts to remain out of a potentially troublesome conversation involving two Scorpions and his rather...socially unusual charge.

It seems he has chosen correctly as Shigeru addresses the Scorpion woman. Is he flirting with her? Or is he mocking her? Or is he mocking her in some weird attempt to flirt with her? Bah, I can't tell with these people. Their thoughts are too twisty. He hated how paranoid he always became around them. Dealing with Scorpions was a courtier's job; it was only with training that one could understand their warped minds.

Hida Yuo stands silently, looking down upon the small Yasuki woman. He does not move, nor does he seem to have any reaction whatsoever. He seems a statue standing in the middle of the courtyard as the others go hurriedly about their business. It only takes a moment for him to respond, but even the brief silence must seem to stretch into eternity for the harried Courtier.

Doji Ameiko? A Crane? And brave, or foolish, enough to come here without a Yojimbo of their own. I wonder why. I can only assume Takakana hopes she finds this as an insult or that she upsets someone here enough for a duel. Dying while protecting a Crane. Other Crab would find that...disappointing. Still, I will do my duty. It does not matter what others think. Only what I can live with...and what I cannot.

He replies simply, Yes.

Ameiko tries not to look interested at the comment she overhears.

Mutsuye. So they do know the bride to be who stole Kage from Rumiko. Hmph, I wonder if they helped her the way I helped Rumiko? Or if they are part of any conspiracy to steal the honor of Kage marrying into our house. Well, let's see if they have any snide remarks if they notice a Crane?

Wanting to gauge their reactions, Ameiko picks up her pace just enough to get ahead of them. In her outfit, even the most dim-witted of people couldn't fail to figure out her clan.

Here's a roll for my potential knowledge of trolls.
Lore: Shadowlands/Intelligence: 6d10 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 9, 7, 7) = 29

Katsuko looked at the two shugenja. Used to the aura of confidence and prestige (some might call it hubris) that followed around shugenja of her clan, this uncanny pairing was a reminder that she was a long way from home. Still, despite their slightly crude manner, one of their number was a Kuni, and could at least point her to where she might begin her journey of discovery. First, however, she desired to feel them out. She was to spend some time here, and knowing who was worth spending time on was important information.

"Konbanwa, friends" Katsuko said, "Might you enlighten us as to some of the finer points of troll anatomy, Yogo-san? I'd like to hear you talk about a topic in which you are educated." She stood as if waiting for a lecture.

"Ah, you flatter me Yogo-san. I would be delighted to try my hand at such a thing, but I confess that I do not have any skill at the art, and I worry that my amateurish efforts might wind up being offensive instead..." Ayumi stated, hiding her lips behind her sleeve as she spoke. This was one whom she'd been warned about, but it would not do to make a fuss of it, especially in front of outsiders. Regardless of the man's reputation however, a Scorpion was still a Scorpion, and if she could put up with his antics long enough perhaps there would be something of use in his words.

It was quite the crowd this little pocket was starting to draw, as she looked about the others that were coming near as well. A Phoenix that seemed interested in the two other shugenja, and accompanied by a Lion. As the woman took up the conversation along with her colleagues, and taking Shigeru's attention off of herself for the moment, Ayumi tried to see if she recognized the Lion. The Scorpion woman had little love for his clan to be honest, but that did not mean that it meant she could ignore him, especially if he was in the company of one of the wife-to-be's delegation, and who knows what she may have heard about him.

Do I roll Heraldry to be able to get anything about Takaji's past or deeds, or am I just going to be in the dark?

Kuni nods, bowing to the others as they approach. "Kuni-san, I do hope that such knowledge will not be necessary attending this Winter Court. I must say, however, that I am somewhat surprised that I was called to attend. I have not spent much of my adult life in our own lands and to be called to a court is something of an oddity. As I am sure you both know, the Taint is an insidious foe and requires much attention to be kept in check."

When he hears Isawa Katsuko ask, he lets the others answer first, but tries to add his knowledge as well.

I'm assuming Lore: Shadowlands? It seems a bit of an odd topic for a formal court, but cest la vie.

Lore (Shadowlands) (7k4) 1 Raise: 7d10 ⇒ (8, 3, 10, 4, 2, 5, 7) = 39

Shinjo Nagasawa:
Toshimitsu smiles again, his gentle reproach forgotten. ”Nagasawa-san has the right of it, Keiyomi-chan. There is nothing to fear. The Crab are among the finest warriors in the Empire and the Shadowlands have not staged an assault since Hida Kisada crushed them at the Battle of Twilight’s Honor.” A couple horses trot forward, somewhere to Nagasawa’s back. Toshimitsu clears his throat.”Before we continue, somebody is here to see you, Nagasawa-san.”

Turning around, you see double. Two Otaku samurai-ko in similar garb. Your betrothed and your love. Nari’s smile is joyless and cold, like a jagged piece of ice. Saki sits in the saddle further back, trying her best not to look at you. Toshimitsu continues talking, unaware of the situation he created. ”Saki-san was assigned to be my yojimbo for the duration of the court. I knew that you were betrothed to her sister, so I arranged for her to be assigned to Kyuden Hida.” He gives you a sincere smile.

Hida Yuo:
Kurako looks back to her parchment. ”Please find her immediately. She shouldn’t be difficult to find. She’ll probably be the only person here in light blue.” She looks back up at you. ”When you’re finished, please come back and find me. I have something else for you.”

Doji Ameiko:
When you glide by, you catch the younger Isawa whisper to the Asako: ”Is that a Crane? I thought they were boycotting this Winter Court. Why is she here?”

Kuni Daigo, Shosuro Auyumi, Isawa Katsuko, & Akodo Takaji:
Ayumi, you would need to beat a TN 40 Lore: Heraldry/Intelligence roll to recognize Takaji.

Daigo, it is improper, but the court hasn’t begun. And these two men care little for social niceties.

Shigeru nods to Katsuko, missing or ignoring the implied insult. ”Well you see, Isawa-san, many scholars believe trolls to be just another form of an ogre; another creature twisted into a new shape by the Shadowlands. However, the truth is very different, a misconception likely buttressed by their outward physical appearance.” The Scorpion appears willing and able to discuss the disgusting subject at length unless stopped.

Matching a Lore: Shadowlands/Intelligence TN 25 will place you in Yogo Shigeru's knowledge range.

Kuni Taira, on the other hand, frowns slightly at Kuni Daigo’s words. ”What you say is true, Daigo-san. The Taint is an insidious blight, one that many brave samurai must deal with on a day-by-day basis. Speaking of it helps us to understand it, and if we can understand it, perhaps we can defeat it.”

My skill is 6k5 so with the rolls in my previous post and no raises I have a 28. What, pray tell, do Kuni-san and I know?

M Unicorn Clan Shinjo Bushi (Shinjo Scout) 3

The first thing to go through Nagasawa's mind is an expletive he learned from Hiruma Ryoichi:

Oh, Zakennayo!

He looks down before his expression manifests these thoughts, noticing the helmet in the crook of his arm. He finds excuse in that relic to keep looking down as he replaces it atop his head as he gathers his thoughts.

When he is ready to straighten again, his back is erect and posture is proud as he replies to Toshimitsu-san. "The Fortunes have smiled upon both of us. You'll be even better protected than those under the care of the Hida OR the Moto..." he looks over to Nari (and Saki) as he continues. "... and even in my dreams I never would have expected to have been reunited so soon."

With a short nod, Hida Yuo turns slowly to look around the courtyard. Spotting the only Crane in a field of others was easy enough, especially when he could see over most heads. The massive Ono returns to its place upon his shoulder and he steps off toward the gliding Crane.

He approaches silently, moving in as direct a manner as possible, stopping a few steps from the woman.

Doji Ameiko. I am to be your Yojimbo. Yasuki Kurako wants me to speak with her once we've met.

Hida Yuo makes no move to return, waiting quietly for the Crane courtier to respond.

Ah, what perfect timing. They have now noticed me and are denied the chance to speak with me or get attention. They will surely seek me out later on out of curiosity and I can get some information without being the one to hunt them down. It is better to be sought after than to look desperate."

Ameiko turns gracefully to face the man who has approached here and then adjusts her gaze upward a foot. Well, this is certainly the tallest crab that I have ever seen. Is that a mark of anything I wonder? Do they think I need such a large Yojimbo for a reason? Was it really unwise for me to come here alone like mother said?"

Ameiko gives little bow to Hido. "Ah, there you are. I had wondered who was being assigned to me. Might I have your name before you head back to her?"

She is not surprised. Good. Brave, but perhaps not a fool. We shall see.

Hida Yuo, he responds. Without another word he slowly turns and walks back to the small Crab woman who had sent him on his way. Approaching and standing quietly and patiently by until she has a moment to spare.

Kuni Daigo & Isawa Katsuko:
I don't think there's anything specific to know. Feel free to look trolls up on the L5R wiki and just role-play it out.

Shinjo Nagasawa:
Nari's face remains locked in the same smile. "When Toshimitsu-san requested I accompany him to Kyuden Hida, I could hardly refuse him."

Shinjo O-Shima spurs her horse forward. "Friends, you surely must be tired after a day's ride. Please, let us reunite at court."

Hida Yuo & Doji Ameiko:
The Crab woman offers Ameiko a slight smile when she arrives. "Ameiko-san. My name is Yasuki Kurako. Hida Kisada-sama has placed me in charge of his court. I trust your trip went safely?"

M Unicorn Clan Shinjo Bushi (Shinjo Scout) 3

Nagasawa silently thanks the Fortunes that Shinjo O-Shima has ended the awkward scene. As the Unicorn ride across the parade ground his thoughts are consumed by how two Otaku samurai-ko can look so alike yet be so different.

Bonge and Buke are alike when they part before the encroaching Shinjo mounts, allowing us to easily cut our way through the throngs vying for Yasuki Kurako's attention. As Shinjo O-Shima politely waits to be recognized, Shinjo Nagasawa again catches sight of his Lion friend, now in the company of an unrecognized Phoenix shugenja.

Eager to let out some sincere affection, he almost forgets himself and remembers just in time that samurai from outside the Clan find hearty handshakes offensive.

"Akodo Takaji-san! It's a welcome surprise to see you here at Kyuden Hida! Our ancestors surely wish us to write another chapter of our exploits!

Knowing that other samurai that are less intimately known wouldn't appreciate such outbursts, he resumes a more traditionally Rokugani reserved state as he introduces himself to Isawa Katsuko. He bows conservatively deep, given Takaji's deferential posture to her.

I am Shinjo Nagasawa, from the tranquil shores of Mizu-umi Ryo, and in the service of Shinjo O-Shima-sama here at Kyuden Hida. An honored friend of Akodo Takaji-san is also an esteemed friend of mine. This is my first Winter Court, but I know this place well. Please don't hesitate to ask if I could be of assistance to you.

Ameiko smiles at the crab woman. "It is a pleasure to meet to you, Kurako-san. I thank you for your concern about my well-being, my trip went very well, the weather and scenery were quite lovely and nothing untoward occurred to me during it."

Hida Yuo stands silently beside Doji Ameiko, still casually holding his Ono on his shoulder. He appears as if he would stand there forever, waiting, if need be.

M Lion Clan Akodo Bushi 3 (Glory 2, Status 1)

Takaji continues to scan the crowds around them as he listens in to the conversation about trolls, slightly disappointed that it seems to be more academic in nature rather than practical.

His lips quirk upwards slightly as he notices a familiar figure riding towards him. As the Unicorn gets closer however, he's unable to keep that from turning into a full blown grin as his tense posture relaxes slightly.

"Nagasawa-san! The fates have been most kind to allow our paths to cross once again like this." He gives a slight bow to his friend in greeting. With a smile, he then also bows to his steed. "Baraq-san, it is good to see you as well. I trust you've been keeping your charge out of too much trouble?" He gives Nagasawa a quick once over as if to say "Well, you're not dead and you look like you're in one piece anyway."

Not wanting to step on her toes (and admittedly rather curious as to what would happen), Takaji allows Katsuko to introduce herself.

Baraq bobs his head as the samurai greet each other, appearing to answer Takaji in the affirmative.

Nagasawa laughs at the timing of his horse's "nodding", affectionately clapping the colt on the neck.

"That he has, Takaji-san. He's always kept me out of harm's way; I don't doubt he could outrun an arrow in flight!

After sharing in some low-intensity banter with Takaji, Nagasawa finds himself looking over his shoulder back at the Unicorn delegation, waiting to see if they've been given quartering assignments from Yasuki Kurako. His gaze lingers on the Battle Maidens escorting Ide Toshimitsu, then realizes his prolonged pause is bordering on awkward and begging an explanation.

"Ah, there is one thing Baraq and I couldn't outrun old friend, and that's matrimony. I'm afraid you'll have to inform all your pretty cousins that I'm now spoken for; this time next year I'll be Otaku Nagasawa! I'll have to introduce you to my intended at the earliest opportunity!

Preparing a response to Yogo Shigeru, Katsuko had her concentration broken by the latest arrival to this inter-clan melting pot. The newcomer was tall, but among the towering Crab clan bushi, he seemed almost average height.

She had been about to question Shigeru-san on the nature of Troll loyalty to the Shadowlands, but with the gathering quickly growing she decided that a switch to pleasant conversation might be for the best. Should she want to discuss more with these two, they would be easy enough to pick out of a crowd.

She turned her attention to the Unicorn. His deep bow was unexpected, and she returned with a slight bow. "Konbanwa, Shinjo-san, and thank you for your polite offer. I am Isawa Katsuko, attending shugenja to Asako Wataru. I have invited Takaji-san join me for tea after the dust of our arrival has settled. Perhaps you would care to join us? I'd be interested to hear some of your insights."

It would be good to know faces at court, and an old friend of her yojimbo was a fine place to start.

Once the conversation turns from the Shadowlands, Kuni Daigo simply watches politely. He seems peaceful though interested in what is being said and simply willing to go with the flow of events until something draws his attention.

Doji Ameiko & Hida Yuo:
Yasuki Kurako looks up from her scroll and gives a hurried smile. "That is excellent to hear." She scans the crowd and gives out an appreciative sigh. "It would appear the Fortunes are looking out for me today. Please, follow me."

The assembled group is approached by the woman coordinating the Clans. She is followed by a stoic, massive Hida and, surprisingly, a Doji dressed in the blue and silver of her clan.

The woman bows, and glances at each of you nervously. "Hida Yuo. Kuni Daigo. Akodo Takaji. Isawa Katsuko. Shosuro Ayumi. Shinjo Nagasawa. Doji Ameiko. To those of you that do not know, I am Yasuki Kurako, the official hostess of the court. The honorable and fearsome Hida-sama has requested your presence immediately."

"Yes Nagasawa-san, you should consider joining us. At the very least, I'm sure you could tell us what is of note in the area. I personally wouldn't mind also hearing about this poor girl you--." Takaji breaks off in mid-sentence as he notices the group approaching. His smile immediately vanishes as his face hardens into a stern mask.

A Crane?! What is a Crane doing here? He glances around for other members of his Clan. Or possibly other Crane members lurking in the shadows. Does Matsu-sama know of this? He vaguely remembered something about the Crane getting upset about the Crab marriage coming up. His lips twitch slightly before he forces the smirk off his face. Leave it to the Crane to spurn a man's advances and then throw a hissy fit when he finds someone else rather than put up with it.

Takaji nods in acknowledgement of the woman's request. He then moves to Katsuko's side, ready to walk with her.

Hida Yuo stands quietly behind Yasuki Kurako, his gaze sweeping over the group in front of him. Interesting. What could he need that requires all of these people? The haft of his Ono rests easily on his shoulder and his face remains impassive. Other than looking them over, he gives no acknowledgment or greeting to those standing before him.

A Lion. Everyone here is potentially dangerous, but he I will need to watch.

Hida Yuo would like to discern Akodo Takaji's Honor when given the opportunity.

Tea? Just how formal an event is she implying? By the Fortunes, I don't think I've sat through a traditional Tea Ceremony since that one time it was explained in the Dojo.. Maybe she just wants to drink something nice while meeting new people... Should I give a counter-proposal that we share some Airag instead? Gah, that'd be daft, look at her. She wouldn't agree to that any faster than a Crane would...

Shinjo Nagasawa begins to stammer a response to Isawa Katsuko but luckily for all involved, Yasuki Kurako's announcement cuts him off.

Yasuki Kurako wrote:

Nagasawa blinks at the unexpected announcement. Worries about tea have been temporarily forgotten. He's shocked into silence that Hida Kisada-sama even knows who he is.

He looks at the other addressed samurai for clues as to whether being known by association is a good thing, or if he should just fall on his sword here and now.

"Yasuki Kurako-sama, I would immediately answer such august summons. Will it be possible to send a messenger to the Unicorn delegation to account for my absence there?

Ameiko looks over the others assembled with her as Kurako speaks. Hmmm, Crab, Crab, Phoenix, Scorpion....Lion? May as well start off now with keeping him off balance. Ameiko gives the male Lion of her prettier smiles when she catches his stony gaze upon her.

Ameiko bows to Kurako after she finishes speaking. "It would be an honor to follow you into his presence Kurako-san."

Not really worried about Crabs here. Unsure of the Scorpion, wary of the Phoenix, no clue what the gaijin Unicorn could be up to and of course, there's the Lion to keep my eye on. This will definitely prove more interesting than last winter when I spent so much time writing Haikus that never succeeded in landing myself or my cousin husbands. Poor, heartbroken Rumiko.

Ameiko follows the group, though she is careful not to be placed in line with the Lion behind her.

Ayumi watched the conversations between the shugenja, then between Nagasawa and Takaji in silence. She wanted to see how these people would act towards one another first, before broaching any subject herself, though admittedly the subject of troll anatomy rather disgusted her, she refused to show it. The Unicorn man's arrival and talk with the Lion was not expected, but the easy friendship between the two men was easy to see as well.

Yet it was the last additions to the group which caught her full attention. A Doji, here? Especially with the marriage? And with a Crab yojimbo that hadn't crushed her yet? Interesting...

Yasuki Kurako introduced herself before she could speak up though, and with the demand of their presence in front of the Crab, it appeared as though personal matters would have to wait. "If Hida-sama wishes us to be graced with his presence, we would no doubt humbly accept his request," the Scorpion said with a bow of her head.

As they are escorted together towards the castle, she notes the Crane woman's eyes on the Lion. Perhaps she was already looking for a replacement suitor for her clan? Unlikely, but then one never knew. More likely it was posturing, the Crane's attempt to unruffle their feathers. Still, her honey-colored eyes watched the Crab yojimbo as she followed last in line to determine his own demeanor towards his charge. Such things were as telling as the woman's own actions after all...

Katsuko frowned slightly, although she was careful to let no one see it. This turn of events was most unexpected, and potentially worrisome.

One of the most powerful and fearsome samurai in the empire wished an audience with seven tenuously associated individuals, nearly representative of each Great Clan, who had seemingly arrived in the same place and time by chance.

Chance? Unlikely.

Katsuko could feel the strings of fate pulling at her, and felt a chill down her spine. Was this occurrence the will of the Celestial Heavens, or darker machinations still? She looked to her yojimbo, who had already adopted a protective poise. He seemed unsettled by the arrival of the Doji courtier and her towering escort. This was unsurprising, but comforting. She liked him wary.

He certainly takes his assignment seriously. That's reassuring.

It was no good to dwell on circumstance. Best to heed the river's flow and keep her wits about her. She calmed herself and bowed to Yasuki Kurako. "Please, Yasuki-sama, lead the way."

Yasuki Kurako nods to Nagasawa. "They have been notified. Please, come this way."

It is apparent within minutes that Yasuki Kurako is not somebody to approach with a serious problem. Although she is the court's hostess, she is nervous and rushed, quickly marching you through the floors of Kyuden Hida. The first two have had the shoji of former barracks completely rearranged and the floors whitewashed, turning them into spacious lounges. The third floor is where the majority of Clan samurai will sleep. The fourth is reserved for guests of honor, including Shinjo O-Shimo, Matsu Bushime, etc. The fifth holds the quarters of important Crabs and the sixth is Hida Kisada's private audience chamber.

Kurako stops you at a small atrium, separated from the chamber proper by an iron shoji and a pair of hulking Hida guards. The Crab courtier takes a moment to smooth out her kimono and addresses you. "Please leave your weapons here. The Kaiu will see that the blades are polished and the satchels re-stitched." She gives you a long look. "I am not sure why Hida-sama requested an audience, but you should be aware that he can be quite... sudden when angered."

Once your weapons have been turned over, the two guards slide the iron shoji aside to reveal the Crab Clan Champion, Hida Kisada. A living legend, he is easily the largest man you've ever seen. Encased in the Armor of the Shadow Warrior, the ebony armor worn by every Crab Champion since the founding of the Clan, all you can see are his eyes, intense and dangerous. He is seated on a raised dais, the only piece of furniture in the room. There isn't even a tatami mat, only stained stone. A dozen yojimbo nearly as large as Kisada himself stand along the walls, dressed in demonic armor and wielding massive spiked tetsubos. A formal bow puts your head at the perfect angle to be whacked off should your escorts decide to slam the shoji shut.

"Enter," Kisada says in a voice like a waiting volcano. "Sit. You are welcome."

The formal greeting is not complete without a shared tea ceremony. A table is retrieved from a side room and the ceremony is prepared. Sitting to Kisada's left, Kurako burns incense, cleanses, and arranges the utensils in exacting detail. When she is prepared, she pours the tea without once raising her eyes from the task. On the other hand, Kisada and his bushi stare rudely and aggressively. An intensely awkward silence descends on the room.

Could everybody roll Willpower/Tea Ceremony or Etiquette TN 15? Whichever is higher.

M Lion Clan Akodo Bushi 3 (Glory 2, Status 1)

Takaji stares impassively at the Doji woman. No Lion baiting? But perhaps she wishes to make a good impression upon the others here and plans to leave that until later. Best not keep the Great Bear waiting for petty squabbles after all.

Once inside the audience chamber a small part of him recoils at the thought of giving up his weapons with a soon-to-be enemy in the room. However, many years of etiquette class allowed him to smoothly hand them over to the attendant without missing a beat. He would not shame his family and clan in front of such a great warrior.

Takaji inwardly smiles as he bows to the Hida daimyo. A clever setup. When bid to sit, he once again takes a position next to his charge. He doubted anyone would be foolish enough to try anything (or that he'd be able to do much against any force strong enough to make success plausible), but you never knew. If I cannot fight with Fang and Claw, then I will make do with tooth and nail if need be.

Shinjo Nagasawa is not concerned about surrendering his weapons. Hida-sama could surely break me in two whether I have my swords or not. He's a bit more concerned about the rush in attending to this audience didn't allow for him to change out of his stiff, leather riding boots. He stifles a sigh of relief at seeing the bare stone floor, knowing at least he won't offend for ruining a tatami mat.

He settles into an uncomfortable kneel, willing his face to not reveal the discomfort due to the pinching and digging from his boots that were never meant for this posture.

Tea. Again it rears its ugly head. I. Will. Not. Be. Killed. Over. Tea.

He takes his cues carefully from Isawa Katsuko and the Crane, Crab (and even the Scorpion) courtiers, knowing their training deeply covers this sort of nonsense.

Hida Yuo hands over his weapons with a solemn nod, seemingly unconcerned. I assume this does not include our Wakizashi? He follows his charge inside and proceeds with a formal bow. When ordered to sit, he quietly takes one. Hida Yuo does not seem uneasy with the silence, he, in fact, seems perfectly at home.
