On a brisk fall evening, Karu ushers some of the newest Pathfinders recruits to a modest home in Absalom. "Go get 'em, champs!" Karu flashes them a thumbs up and a wink. A Pathfinder Society Venture Captain welcomes the Pathfinders into his modest Absalom home for an impromptu meeting. "Greetings, I am VC Drandle Dreng. Please, come in." He offers chairs and drinks, wipes sweat from his brow, and dives into business. Once everyone is settled, he begins.

Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng, a stout and hardy Taldanwith thin, graying hair and a thick, bushy mustache, unfurls a map on his butcher-block table and places a meaty finger on the parchment. “The abandoned district of Beldrin’s Bluff was once the gem of Absalom’s Precipice District—now it is but a weathered crag of broken rock at the edge of the roiling sea. When the great quake hit ten years ago, entire blocks of the Bluff sheared from the mainland. Cliffside tearooms and exclusive estates fell into the waves and carried hundreds of nobles to a watery grave. An elite academy, called the Tri-Towers Yard, remained on the mainland, but sank wholesale into the earth. Children unfortunate enough to survive the quake lay pinned under debris as sewer water slowly rose from the ground and drowned them. Nearly every student perished."

“Today, crumbled stone walls and weed-filled lots sprawl where gentlemen’s clubs once filled with pipe smoke and hobnobbing lords. The Drownyard—er, that’s what the ill-mannered call the school these days—lies behind a fence of black iron pikes, constructed by the families of the dead to discourage morbid trespassers."

“Even respected archaeological groups have been denied official access. Our own Society has itched to explore the site ever since the quake—that is, ever since we discovered that the school fell through the roof of a lost necropolis. Unfortunately, the emotional trauma attached to the school has remained fresh. But finally, after ten years of mourning, the politically-connected families of dead students have sanctioned our delve request.”

With a toothy smile and a clap, Dreng says, “I’m pleased to announce that I’ve selected your team for the delve. I want you to find a way into the necropolis, document your findings with professional detail, and recover artifacts of historical significance. The Society is interested in one artifact in particular—a two-finger ring topped with a ruby salamander.”

Drandle Drenge pulls an iron key from his waistcoat and tosses it to the nearest Pathfinder. “I leave you with the key to the Drownyard gate. Remember, the Drownyard is a deeply personal site for many powerful Inner Sea families. You will tread upon the graves of their children. Be sure to give the site the respect it deserves.”

...Long ago in a remote region of Tien, an Andoran caravan traveling through a small village, left behind a child. Found at the dam down by the river by a fisherman, he was raised as the village’s own. Twenty-five years later,...

Quickened footstep through Absalom streets, brings a portly barreled chest young man to join the group. He is obviously not of the same stock as the normal Tien men, heavy build with light blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Complete in his black and grey outfit, he looks like an over-yeasted dinner roll in Lamellar casing. Paired swords at his side and an array of other weapons in sleeves dangle about - kusarigama, nunchaku, sai, blowgun, grappling hook and line. With a joyous and humble bellow, he introduces himself, "Greetings Sündr-dögünn, Master Honda - I am Barley 川から流木, of clan Sokaei. My master, Pinché, has allowed me to assist you upon this quest. Let us make haste to the cliffs."

Sündr has a bunch more questions for the Venture Captain, which she will ask politely in turn. She'll also attempt any and all Knowledge checks you'll allow, though I expect the real bard is better at that than me. =)

"Whose necropolis are we talking about, and why was it lost? When does it date from?
"Why is the Society so interested in this particular salamander ring? Who did it belong to? Is it cursed?
"Do we have any, ah, active competition for this delve?"

Sündr has some equipment that may be of use (a journal, two sticks of charcoal, parchment for rubbings, etc.) but will probably also pick up some more supplies on the way over.

I glance over Barley with curiosity. In Tien:

川から流木 indeed. Are you Minkaian? It is good to meet another countrymen so far from home... however unlikely their appearance.

Dreng strokes his chin before answering. “Moldering texts tell of a coastal necropolis, rich with ancienttreasures. Until the Tri-Towers Yard sank, no one knew the necropolis’s location. There are likely still parts underwater.”

“In ancient times, a wealthy merchant cut a ruby salamander ring from the hand of young cat burglar named Horastian. Horastian later became a renowned information broker and art collector. The Pathfinder Society hopes to magically locate the long-dead thief and his fabled hoard by using the ring as a divination focus.”

"There is likely to be competition for the ring, but I am unaware of any active competition, however we have an edge. You are able to attend a dinner with Lady Miranda Dacilane. She may have information pertinent to the area. Dreng claps his hands and a man dressed in noble livery steps into the room and gives the Pathfinders each an invitation:

Hero of the Society,

It has come to my attention that you and your cohorts were chosen by the noble Pathfinders to enter and explore what became of the Tri-Towers Yard. As my daughter, Junia, was lost there during the great quake, it seems only proper that you attend the banquet I am holding tomorrow in memory of her. You and your friends should wear your finest and arrive at the Dacilane Estate in the Ivy District at sundown. As you are probably not accustomed to the traditions of nobles, not attending this dinner would be a serious slight upon the memory of my daughter.

Sincerely,
Lady Miranda Dacilane

This is optional. What do you do?

”I am from Lingshen”, Barley responds in western-accented Tien with a degree of joy, ”My village is on the Sea of Eels' western banks, near Goka and the Wall of Heaven. -Quite far from Minkai on the other side of Tian-Xia I think.”.

”I too, think that we should attend this dinner before entering the tombs. It would be dishonorable and ill-omen to not be blessed by the kin of the deceased. I do have a set of silken ceremonial armor, it would be appropriate for this occasion. However, I do need additional supplies before our quest. With Honda at 1st level, can Barley lend him gp and he can then use scenario treasure to repay?

That would be fine.

It appears that you are attending the dinner. In appropriate dinnerwear, nonetheless.

The Pathfinders dress to the nines after purveying the various tailors' shops in Absalom. They arrive at the address on the invitation to find a sprawling estate surrounded by a tall, wrought-iron fence and overly decorated in statuary, fountains, and a carefully landscaped garden. The dinner party guests are met by faerie dragons under the service of the Dacilane family who escort them about the manor and explain the historical significance of every statue and trinket. The Dacilane house interior, with gilded furniture, painted ceilings, gold-spun wallpaper, and valuable Chelish rugs that, if sold, could easily feed a family in the Puddles District for a lifetime.

Despite her obvious wealth, the Lady Dacilane’s grief is very real, and she does her best during the dinner (a 10-course affair) to keep her composure as she receives proper introductions, but it is obvious that she is in emotional pain. Toward the end of the dinner, she finally broaches the subject of her daughter and the Tri-Towers Yard.

“My daughter Junia was one of so many children lost. Hundreds of them pinned under the rubble in that sinkhole. The black water rising—the kids screaming.” She quiets for a moment. “None of us could get to them.”

Lady Dacilane tries her best to be polite, though you sense that she regards you as with disdain and as lesser beings than her servants. However, she’s desperate for any news whatsoever of her beloved Junia. Have you any word of my daughter in the Tri-Towers Yard? She looks like she is bordering on emotional hysteria kept in check only by her staunch devotion to propriety.

We will return with any news of her or the other lost children. Is there anything you or your friends can tell us about the Tri-Towers Yard? Anything at all that might aid us in our expedition.

Shortly after the sun crests the horizon, the Pathfinders set off for Beldrin's Bluff.

Beldrin’s Bluff is a rotting ghost town at the edge of a hungry sea. Throughout the derelict landscape, seagulls perched on splintered timbers reflect your passage in their glassy black eyes. Overhead, dark clouds move ashore with the promise of a storm.

As you approach the Drownyard on Beldrin’s Bluff’s west side, you see a fence of black iron pikes surrounds a block-wide yard. Dead tree branches reach out from the fence like the arms of emaciated prisoners desperate to escape. A man is on the inside, cutting the trees down. Some of the dismembered branches remain, stuck in place by knotty elbows swollen around the iron.

The man looks up from his sawing and watches your approach. His thinning hair is matted and sweaty.

Beyond the man, partially collapsed buildings and three whitewashed towers lean in a lake-filled yard.

When the Pathfinders open the padlocked gate with the Drownyard key, the man approaches them with an abruptly friendly demeanor. He drops his gloves, smiles, and reaches out a hand to shake those of his new friends.

Greetings. I am Deris Marlinchen, caretaker for this school. I am so glad to have visitors. Not many people come down here to the Academy. What can I do for you?

It does, but I have wanted to try and integrate it with the scenarios. Basically, I'm just using it a number-metric to show how charismatic the guy is. You certainly aren't bound to be affected, but I think for roleplay purposes, it would be nice to know how diplomatic a person is.

@Jiro: Luckily he is friendly and doesn't have one more point of Charisma, otherwise you would have made him lose a step on the attitude scale.

The man looks quizzically at Jiro. Dangers in the necropolis? I know that my daughter, Cassiel went into the Drownyard, but she should be back sometime soon. I think Mrs. Heracks at the classroom could lead you to the entrance to the Drownyard. She was the one that was down there the longest. I can introduce her to you. This better no be another waste of time. Sam thinks following the nutcase.

Gyles has heard nothing about a school being here at the Drownyard. In fact, he is positive that he would have heard of such a thing, being such a well-connected man in Absalom.

Deris speaks up in response to Gyles' questions. Benefit? I get to wait for my daughter and care for the great children here. The school opened back up shortly after the incident and I've been here ever since.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

In the middle of his conversation, Deris sees Sundr's hand anxiously waiting near her axe. Please, leave your weapon where it is. You wouldn't want to scare the children, would you?

Deris will lead you to the classroom, speaking of the wonders of the Drownyard. The ruined paths of the Tri-Towers Yard wind their way around black ponds and gray, shattered buildings. Powerful fragrances precede one roofless hall where a thin path meanders through an abundance of flower arrangements in wild bloom. These are the original funerary flowers from 10 years ago, the wonderful magic of the Drownyard has kept them alive and growing into a small flower garden. Just off this path is the entrance to a small classroom—this is where Deris Marlinchen leads the Pathfinders.

He opens the door and ushers the Pathfinders inside. As the Pathfinders move inside, they notice ten students dressed in checkered uniforms sit stiffly at wooden desks, staring straight ahead. No one moves. At the front of the class, a conservatively dressed woman leans against the wall. As soon as Deris moves into the room, the children jump up and rush to hug Deris in a large group hug. The woman smiles demurely at Deris, seemingly ignoring the Pathfinders.

Deris looks over at her. Mrs. Heracks! It is good to see you again. I have a favor to ask of you. The woman stiltedly moves towards Deris. You know that I would love to help you Deris...

These individuals needs you to guide us to the entrance to the Drownyard.

Certainly! Kids, stay here while I take Deris and his new friends to the Drownyard! The kids chime in the positive while Deris holds the door open and Mrs. Heracks looks at the Pathfinders expectantly.

This is a creepy scenario

Deris grabs Sam's hand as he casts detect magic, foiling his spell. We don't allow magic in the classroom. He whispers to Sam. The children have gone through enough with the wild magic in the Drownyard. They get spooked by the magic...

Sam:
Sam touches the head of one of the children and finds that the child is ethereal. His hand goes right through the child, but Deris doesn't seem to notice.

Sündr would have wanted to cast detect magic on the flowers outside... "What is this fine magic you speak of?" If he doesn't interrupt her, she'll attempt a spellcraft check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

She gazes around the classroom Perception: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1, apparently with her eyes shut.

At Deris's interruption (of me or Sam), Sündr gets extra suspicious. Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Something fishier than grandpa's breeches here..., Barley slowly moves away from Deris and Heracks, as he wads a spit ball and suddenly blowguns it across the room at a random kid who is seated still.

blowgun: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

After seeing the strangeness of the classroom, Gyles takes a few moments to think about what he knows about spirits Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6, which is apparently not much. Having few other options, he follows Deris out.

My hand just went right through that kid's head. There is no children here, only ghosts and I am not planning on following them into undeath. So no, thanks, I think I am going to pass on their help Deris.

Its in the open.
If the mad man grabs Sam again he is taking his AoO against it.

"Whoa there, Barley, don't blow that too quickly now!" Sündr says in surprise. When Sam speaks up, however, the skald sings a different tune. "Apologies, Barley, perhaps you were not mistaken."

Drawing her greataxe, she points it in Deris's direction. "Methinks you ought to start singing, little birdie, or else enjoin us in glorious battle. I would be honored to relieve your shoulders of your neck."
