Artemiy Sewick | Russian

Artemiy turns his frozen stare toward Freeman and just looks at her for a moment. Then he shrugs, the hands in his jacket pockets exaggerating the gesture. "Go ahead. I am good at keeping watch. Make sure our Will Wesson stays out of trouble, Kira Freeman. And see what you can find. My presence there may be noticed. Yours will not."

If she questions him at all about that last comment, he shrugs again. "A Russian in a leather coat, in Roshburg, entering a respected club? It turns eyebrows."

Male Human

"Evening to you Mr. Xavion. I hope I'm not being intrusive, but I was interested in checking out the club with friends of mine. May I?" Will keeps his hands low, only opening his arms breifly as he asks his question.

Team 1:
"Uh, yeah..." Freeman says in response to Sewick, and heads inside.

---

The receptionist nods. "Of course. This social club is open for visitors." He gestures towards another room, and leads Will there. The room has six round tables in it, each clearly made for card games. At the end of the room is another door. There is no one else in the room: all the tables are empty of players.

(I'm not very good at explaining floor plans, so here's a picture.)

"This is where non-premium members spend their time," Mr Xavion explains. "It seems that at the moment there are none present, but on weekends we usually have full tables."

At this moment, Freeman enters the scene. "Uh, yeah, hi?"

"A friend of yours? Anyway, two players does not quite make a good table. But for you, here..." Mr Xavion takes two coupons out from his pocket, and hands them to Will and Freeman. "If you come back on Wednesday or on the weekend, you'll surely find more people here. The usual price of entry is $12 per evening per person, but this coupon gives a $2 discount. Premium members benefit the club's full activities without the entry fee, of course."

(I'm so sorry, Milo. Completely missed your post. I must have forgotten about it.)

Team 3:
(Understood, but that presents issues. Moreover, the FBI is not involved with the Roshburg Killer case yet: mostly because Roshburg PD is struggling to make a case out of it, and even then the Killer hasn't crossed state lines. You're in the city for a different, unrelated case. The case you're actually working on is kind of boring: tracking paper trails on the financial mess some con artist has made.)

(The chief of police knows what the FBI is up to in Roshburg. He might not be the right person to ask, unless you're really confident in your ability to deceive him. Instead, you could try to gather information indirectly, from your co-workers and colleagues. There is only one FBI agent in Roshburg with you, working on the same case as you. But you still have many regular policemen to work with.)

(Getting the basic information on the victims should be very easy here, but if you want more than that you'll need to think it through.)

Adrien would prefer to look information about the victims. If I have Milo's phone number I calls him to tell him about leaving the club to the others and to better go for the medical records.

Male Human

"Oh, this is fine with me. I always enjoy a bit of quiet." Will separates bills in his wallet, accepting the coupon from the man before paying for the two present.

"Ms. Freeman, could you save us a seat? I'd hate to lose our place in line." He pokes his head out of the door to wave Artemiy inside while Kira finds a seat.

"Hopefully three can make a decent game. You play cards Mr. Sewick?" Will asks his comrade.

Male Human

That's one of the reasons i didn't say anything about hte actual case and was just in general about murders. So yea i guess i am indirectly trying to deceive him

Artemiy Sewick | Russian

Artemiy pauses for only a moment before walking to the club where Will is waving. Entering the club will likely draw less attention than a scene outside where they yell at each other, so he steps through the door and nods to the other man. "I have played my share of cards, yes. I hope you do not charge me for this time if you lose, though?" The Russian's subtle bluff, suggesting Will as his lawyer, is far from a clever deception, but it may do the job, and even the mere suggestion of it could be enough to explain how they know one another's names.

As he watches the club Malcon anounces to Adrien and Jake, "I've got a bad feeling about this. Let's go see what we can find out about the victims and their medical records."

Male Human

"Only if you make me look bad in front of the lady while you do it. It's his job to take your money here." Will's smile changes ever so slightly to indicate his appreciation for the mans intent. He heads back to whichever table Freeman picked.

"So... who here can cut cards? This is the part where I admit I'm terrible at poker." The well-dressed lawyer gets work thinking about details to mention about the place, and maybe to get to know something about these people who are also possibly getting suckered into an elaborate chain-letter scam.

Course, 'elaborate' wouldn't even begin to describe it. Maybe they have a point. We could stand to at least get along.

Team 1:
"Ah, there's three of you. Well, I don't mean to stop you," the reception says, and adjusts his necktie. "The entry fee was $12 per person per evening... thank you."

(I assume you pay this minimal sum. It's part of day-to-day purchases, no need to write it down. You might even get the Sponsor to pay for it, if you ask for a receipt!)

Once he has the money, Mr Xavion bows and exits through the back door. The door which has a sign that says, 'Premium only'.

(I'm going to have to ask you to roll Deception, Artemiy; if the receptionist wins the opposed skill roll he'll know that you two aren't a client/lawyer pair. The same goes for Will, but he has so big a bonus that I don't think the receptionist stands a chance.)

---

The three of you sit down on a table. Two decks of cards, already shuffled, are lying on it.

"We're not actually going to play for money, are we?" Kira asks.

There are multiple security cameras in the room.

(If you want to play cards, for in-game money: roll 1d20, and Deception, and People. The 1d20 represents your luck with cards, the Deception your bluffing, and the People roll your ability to read your opponent.)

(If you'd like to fake playing cards, that's a Deception skill roll, but you can choose who wins.)

(If there's something else you'd like to do, do it. Don't let your dreams be dreams. And so on.)

Team 2:
(Hmm, how are you going to access the victims' medical records? See here. And yes, you have Milo's phone number.)

Team 3:
(Well, if you want to deceive the chief, go ahead and roll Deception. Maybe you can make him believe the FBI actually is looking for those things. Succeed or fail, it will have its consequences.)

"Unless anyone remembers the names of the victims we're going to have to stop by the library first and look at some old newspapers." Marcus continues, "Once we have some information we can cross reference it with funeral services and hopefully get some names or other identifying information. Also, there might be some useful information at the hospital morgue that will help us to get a more complete picture as to who the victims are."

Male Human

deception: 1d20 ⇒ 12

Artemiy Sewick | Russian

Deception: 1d20 ⇒ 11

"Why not? Unless you have a fear of losing." Artemiy casts his gaze on Kira and reaches out to take a deck. "It all comes out in the dirty laundry, in any case. If you like, we play a round or two with no money? I will deal first."

Luck: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Deception: 1d20 ⇒ 11
People: 1d20 ⇒ 8

Male Human

What unnervingly average rolls all around. I'll add more later, but off to work for now.

Deception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12 Not gonna add the five, since I don't think this qualifies.

"Okay Jake you drive then," Malcolm replies as he climbs into the front seat of Jake's vehicle.

Male Human

"Fine, I'll put something in the pot, but nothing over five. I only have ten dollars on me right now, and there's a slopper with my name on it at Burger Lord on my way home. Is that acceptable Ms. Freeman? It's quite alright if you'd rather not play with money. I never did the few times I played back home."

Luck: 1d20 ⇒ 1

Deception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Is poker like Golf? Low cards win?

(Crud and several other curse words! I was writing a long post, and then my computer decided to shut itself down. I'll get back to this tomorrow, if I can. I was hoping to do this today, because tomorrow is a busy day for me.)

"All right."

One (hopefully uneventful) ride later, they arrive at the library.

That happened to me once and it does stink!

It's there a roll for remembering stuffs?

Just in case: 1d20 ⇒ 19

-While Travelling

Can I ask why are you so sure there is an actual murderer behind the deads, Jake?

Team 1:
Kira's Luck: 13 = 13
Kira's Deception: 19 = 19
Kira's People: 10 = 10
(I'm using the numbers she got in the post that got scrapped.)

19:15

You play a few rounds of cards, with no money bids. Will kept getting the worst cards possible, and though he tried to make it better with a good bluff, the attempt was in vain. The Russian got decent cards, two pairs and such: if his bluffing was a bit better he could have won a round or two. However, Freeman had more luck with cards and her poker face was on a whole new level, surprisingly. She won all rounds, having managed to bluff both her opponents into thinking she had a worse hand than she did.

None of this mattered, of course, but the three got to know one another a bit better, at least. Maybe.

Kira seems more relaxed now. "I shouldn't have gone all out when there's no money involved." She also tells she has three older brothers, with whom she's played cards a lot as a kid.

(Do you want to continue playing, or snoop around the place? Or are you done here?)

Team 2:
(Adrien: Not really. The rules mention rolling Perception to memorize a license plate, and then there's the Photographic Memory talent. Other than those two things, the rules are quiet on memory. Usually there is no roll involved, but I may ask you to roll a relevant skill if you wish to remember something a normal person would have likely forgot, eg. recalling the phone number on the billboard in the first meeting location, that might be a Science roll or something.)

Jake gives you a ride to the nearest library, where you find old newspapers from the past month or so. Using pen, paper, diligence, and a few cups of coffee, you work your way through piles of newspapers...

19:15

Some time passes, but you manage to gather a list of the victims.

A "list" is being a bit generous, of course. An overview would be more fitting.

(Format is as follows: the date of the victim's death (day of the week), gender and occupation (age), where was found dead.)

January 30 (Fri), female college student (29), at a park
February 1 (Sun), male taxi driver (35), in his taxi
February 9 (Mon), male corporate director (51), in his office
February 17 (Tue), female secretary (40), in her home
February 25 (Wed), male construction worker (29), on the job
March 4 (Thu), female bank teller (43), on the job
March 4 (Thu), male office worker (33), in his home

The library closes in 45 minutes or so. It's getting late.

(What will you do now?)

Team 3:
You walk to Will Reldway's, the chief of police's, office. He was doing some paperwork when you knock on the door and enter. He raises his head and puts the papers aside.

Reldway is a serious man in his fifties. He isn't known to mingle with his co-workers, but from what you've understood he's an intelligent man.

"Special agent Halden. What is it?"

You request case files, trying to make it sound like the FBI is investigating something, while being non-specific about the details.

The Chief maintains his stone-serious face. "I don't understand - what's this about? I would know if the FBI was involved."

(Roll People to determine his mood - is it anger, confusion, curiosity, or what?)

(In any case, it looks like he's not buying it. What will you do now?)

Malcolm looks at his companions wearily, "Any ideas or leads we can track down while we're here?" He waits for a response and adds, "I suggest we go the the hospital and cross reference the records at the morgue with the information we retrieved at the library."

Male Human

Will can't help laughing with his head in his hand by the last round.

"And you're the one who didn't want to play for money! Welp. Whatever, I'd kick your ass at pool. Or paper stacking." The pool comment comes out in a deliberately juvenile tone for effect.

Will gives the room a look around, trying to find something of note to refer to in conversation.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 12

"So, would it be too personal to ask what you two do for a living? Mr. Sewick? Ms. Freeman? I left the lawyer thing on the table, but I understand that we do not know each other very well yet."

That's seems like the correct course of action, Malcolm. But how easy or hard is to get access to those records?

Adrien Chevalier wrote:

"Shouldn't be to hard, I have privileges at the hospital," He announced hopefully.

Adrien Chevalier wrote:

"Just a gut feeling. Something doesn't add up with these deaths."

"Shouldn't be to hard, I have privileges at the hospital," He announced hopefully.

"Should at least come up with a cover story. What do you tell people if they ask you why you're looking up these records? What happens if they see the exact names you're looking up and put two and two together? Might be a slim chance, it might not. Being careless about this could blow this investigation before it really begins."

"It might be better not getting the info, or not right now, if it means tipping our hand. Give it a try, but abort if anything goes sideways. We can come up with a plan B."

Team 1:
Will looks around the room, looking for anything of note. Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary, but then again he didn't put much time and effort into his search.

(Nothing wrong with what you did, but nonetheless I would like to remind of the rules for Perception. If you put the time and effort into searching and examining, you will find all the clues etc in the area, and the Perception result shows how quickly. When time or effort is in short supply, the Perception indicates if you find anything at all.)

"Personal trainer, remember?" Freeman answers to Will.

(Artemiy?)

(In any case, what will you do next? You haven't seen much of the club yet.)

Team 2:
Malcolm, indeed, could have a chance of accessing medical records. But as Jake suggested, it might help to have a cover story first. And a Plan B.

The hospital is a 15-minute drive away from the library.

Male Human

people: 1d20 ⇒ 4

I'll wait to see his mood before responding with my backup plan

Team 3:
It's really hard to tell how he feels about this.

Artemiy Sewick | Russian

Woops, thought I'd posted.

Artemiy, for his part, gives a very noncommittal shrug. "Janitor. I clean the messes other people make. It is a living." He taps his fingers on the table and then stands. "But for tonight, I am tired. A round of cards is enjoyable, but I should get some rest. Maybe you should as well." He nods and turns to leave the club. "Have a good evening, Will Wesson, Kira Freeman."

As Malcolm gets into Jakes car with Adrien he says, "I should be able to use the hospitals system and pretend to check on one of my current patients." He scratches his chin, "We might need a back up plan any ideas?"

Male Human

"Dammit, no one told you " Milo sigh audibly muttering to himself sounding bummed " How did they expect me to continue the case like this " He speaks up, "It's hard to describe without giving away information i was told not to, sorry for bothering you chief " Milo turns about to leave, unless the chief tries to stop him or something.

Team 1:
(How will you react, Will?)

Team 2:
Jake starts the engine, and you drive to Roshburg Central District Hospital. On your way there you try to come up with a back up plan of some kind.

19:34

You arrive at the hospital. Roshburg Central General Hospital (often simply called "Central Hospital") is the largest hospital in the city, but not the only one. As a general hospital, it is set up to deal with many kinds of disease and injury, and it has an emergency department for urgent matters.

Malcolm works at this hospital, and knows that the hospital has a restricted sector for special cases, including crime forensic pathology. When the police want an autopsy report from a medical examiner, that sector is where the body is sent.

Even so, that sector may not be the best place to start at. It is restricted, and access requires authorization. Malcolm, while a respected doctor, does not have that.

However, it could be possible to dig into facts. After all, seven people have died and most likely brought to this hospital. The paperwork could have some clues to show who these people are.

Team 3:
The chief doesn't stop you from leaving, and in fact does not add anything further to the discussion. As you close the door you can see him writing something down. You have a bad feeling it's about you.

Just as you close the door and have a chance to sigh, one of your co-workers approaches you. "Hey Halden. You talked to the chief?"

It's Stevens, a junior officer who's assisted you on a small thing a while back. You have trouble remembering his first name; it was either Mike, Max, or Mark. Anyway, Stevens is a sociable but a bit too curious person. His personality works in his favor, as he does solely office work.

"Was that about that con-man? What did he say?"

Male Human

"Yeah, briefly? i figured i look into a few thing's, but the chief couldn't help" Milo head's toward the door, hand's in his pocket. He start's up a casual conversation as he heads outside "Hey did you hear about those murders? Weird huh? Unexplainable deaths and all"

Male Human

The perception roll was just to spot something minor. No decorations? I don't mean to sound like I'm asking for a detailed layout of the room, date of the artwork, whether or not Xavion has kids, or anything like that. That'd be nonsense. But like, one thing?

"Heh. I suppose that tells me enough. Have a good evening Mr. Sewick." Will waves, and as the custodian leaves the room, he turns to Kira.

"Erm, before we leave, I'd like to clarify something I said earlier. My intent rather. When I mentioned my car, I didn't mean to come across as bragging. It's just... a luxury I'm proud of, you could say. I grew up in a small town called Hookhead in Minnesota. There was less than a stunning local economy. If something broke, we didn't get to replace it. 'Just fix it', dad would say. I never got very good at that."

Malcolm Grey wrote:
[/b] He scratches his chin, "We might need a back up plan any ideas?"

For a start, in order to make our search harder to connect to the Roshburg killer cases, we need to look for more than the seven victims we are interested in. Another ten or fifteen... gender, race and age chosen at random just for distraction.

Team 1:
"You too," Freeman says to the Russian.

While Artemiy is walking to his car, Freeman and Will exchange phone numbers, and a few words. "I don't know, I don't think we got anything useful out of this. Uh, do we meet at the same location, same time?"

(@Will: The decorations? Nothing out of the ordinary. Some office plants, and lamps that create a dim lighting and relaxing atmosphere.)

(Do you call it a day?)

Team 2:
Adrien has a good idea.

(What will you do now, in the hospital?)

Team 3:
"I know right. The boys and I aren't happy about this whole Killer thing. My wife says her friends are on her toes, asking questions like, 'Your husband is a police, right? Why haven't they done anything yet?' Heh, it feels like I have to deal with the same work at home, too."

While he babbles, you can almost see a light bulb appear above his head: Stevens figured something out.

"So, did you and chief talk about those deaths? Our department could use a few more brains on this one. After the top branch stops being paralyzed, of course."

As usual with the curious Stevens, he wants to know what's going on.

Male Human

That works. Good to proceed.

"It's true, I wish we could have done more to help today. But, the three of us can't very well go searching through records, that's the professionals job. Still, I feel we've done what we can for the operation, if not the investigation. We will learn where to meet later in the week, Ms. Freeman. The instructions will be delivered then. Have a good night, stay safe." Will delivers his last words with a handshake offer.

Adrien Chevalier wrote:

"Makes sense,"Malcolm replied. Not used to clandestine activities he suddenly realizes something, If the killer realizes we're looking for him are we in danger of being his next target.

He has an uneasy idea and asks, "Do you think we could draw the killer out by being very obvious about our search?"

"Feel free to give it a shot, kiddo. Just give me a chance to distance myself and find a good vantage point to watch what happens to you." Jake chuckles.

Male Human

"No not really that case specifically, i was asking more about murders and crime in the area in general. Making sure none of it's connected to anything else. Dotting my i's crossing t's, ya know the usual." Milo hops on his cycle, putting on his helmet. "I'm heading out, if you need anything give me a call. And if you find anything out about those murder's let me know, we can't let people like that walk the streets." Milo head's to go meet the other's at the club.

I need to lay low in the department for a while, that was a close call

I guess in the hospital jake and I wait outside so nobody see Malcolm with us

Team 1:
"Okay. Good night."

With those words, Will and Freeman go their separate ways.

19:30

(I guess you head home now and call it a day? What happens next is that, due to the PbP wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey time dissonance (or however it can be described), you (the players, Green Smashomancer and Loup Blanc) would have to wait until the other players have finished their tasks. You may take a small break from posting here, or you can roleplay your (Will and Artemiy's) day-to-day routine the following day. The Club activities probably continue in the evening.)

Team 2:
With Jake and Adrien's mental support, Malcolm enters his workplace. You have each others' phone numbers, and come up with an idea: Adrien or Jake calls Malcolm's cell, and they keep the phone call ongoing while Malcolm is in the hospital. That way the two can listen on Malcolm's side of the events, and maybe even whisper a few words of advice to him.

(Will you do this? If so, which one of you calls Malcolm?)

When thinking of good vantage points, Jake and Adrien find that waiting in the car on the parking lot could be the option that draws the least attention. Jake opens the glove compartment in his car, and indeed, he still keeps his binoculars there. The binoculars could be used to peek inside the hospital windows from a distance: the visibility is limited to the windows, of course.

Meanwhile Malcolm enters the hospital through the usual means: the staff-only side door, which leads to a small office-type room, and from there on it's wherever he wants to go.

Malcolm: You know the staff archives all their patient records on the highest floor (which is staff-only, of course), and that individual staff members keep some patient files on them and in their offices. Finally, and most importantly, you know that whatever data the crime investigators have on the victims can be found in the restricted sector.

What will you do now?

Team 3:
You are casual in your half-truths, and luckily Stevens isn't sharp (or paranoid) enough to smell anything fishy. "Ah, I get you. Bummer."

"Yeah, yeah," Stevens nods to you as you start heading to the exit. "Don't hold your breath, Halden."

18:30

(I'm sorry to say, but I don't think you should enter the clubhouse even if you drive there. It would cause some time paradoxes because we've already established that Team 1 has done things there. This is why there's this separation to these Teams: one separate "scene" for each Team. Nothing is stopping Milo in-universe from driving to the clubhouse, but out-of-universe reasons ("scene"-overlapping) are preventing you from doing anything there.)

(Instead, there is still plenty of things to do for you. Here in the police station, for example. Or somewhere else, even. What will you do now? Or do you call it a day?)

Adrien let Jake to do the calling (if any) and for now just wait while pondering the pros and cons of trying to look for the datain the restricted sector.

Malcolm made his way through the staff entrance of the hospital and went right to the elevators. He presses the up button several times, in futility, hoping his actions will hurry the elevator along. When the elevator eventually arrives he quickly gets on and selects the top floor as his destination. He begins to sweat as the the elevator slowly ascends. He reminds himself, Don't worry, you work here.

Better to tell Malcolm to laeve the restricted area alone, in case he have the wrong ideas.

"You heard him, right Malcolm?"

Team 2:
After repeated mashing on the elevator button, the elevator comes to his floor. Malcolm enters the elevator, and hears Adrien and Jake's quiet voices from his mobile phone, instructing him to avoid the restricted sector.

Malcolm twists his staff key on the elevator, allowing it to ascend to the highest floor.

19:40

The highest floor, F5, is where the bulk of the patient files are archived (in this pre-modernization era with developing computers and data structure). The lights are out, suggesting that no one is currently using the archives.

Rows and rows of file drawers fill the large area. Malcolm remembers there being a few work desks among the drawers, as well as one coffee machine in the corner table. In the hospitals discredit, there are no office plants in the room: no wonder people get drowsy here.

(Searching for clues here would be a Perception roll as usual, but while you're at it make a Biology/chemistry roll as well. Or is there something else you'd like to do here?)

Jake and Adrien can spy on the archive room from their car, but the visibility is practically non-existent now due to the darkness of the room. Once Malcolm turns on the lights, the two can at least observe some things on the room if they want.
