"I'll look into the chemicals that might have been used. Perhaps I can isolate a specific industry where the precursors are commonly used," Malcolm offered.

Somebody have to investigate the victims pasts - Say Adrien with after a sigh of resignation.

"Let's check the taxi cab first. More contained scene, will probably be easier to find any evidence that might have been left behind than, say, the park."

(There's a problem: you don't know where the crime scenes are, do you?)

Male Human

Wouldn't at least one of the crime scenes be on the news and easy to find?

GM MM MG wrote:

How did we look up records containing the victims' names and occupations but somehow not get place and time of death?

Male Human

Actually we did get time of death to an extent (date at least). So it is odd we have no clue where the victims died. Odder even.

(Even though some of the locations are beyond your knowledge right now — e.g. the workplace of Maxhold and the home addresses of House and the seventh victim — you're right that some of locations are known. My bad.)

The group is able to narrow down the crime scenes of multiple of the victims. The park where the female college student died is easy to figure out, as is the construction site where Lewis Herring worked in. The bank where the sixth victim worked could also be within the reach of the Club members, with a little snooping. And, if the taxi drivers of Roshburg were interviewed, details about Ron Parks and his taxicab could be uncovered.

(So what were the teams again?)

Male Human

"...Alrighty then." Will clasps his hands for a moment.

"Mrs. Bond, if you would, please try to see if our Mr. Maxhold had acquired any recent contacts before his demise. As for myself, I think perhaps I should do the same if I can get in contact with the families. Or maybe try out the supernatural angle after all. Though to be honest, if I pursue the latter option, I would rather go out myself."

(Team 1 (Jake + Artemiy + Milo) goes to check out the crime scenes, starting from the taxi cab.)

(Malcolm, you wanted to look into the chemicals. How will you do this?)

(Adrien, you wanted to investigate the victims a bit more. How will you do this?)

(Will, what will you do? Also, it seems you can't go by yourself; otherwise there'd be more than three teams at once. You, Malcolm, and Adrien will have to make a compromise somewhere. In any case, Delgado and Freeman are free to use.)

Team 1:
Artemiy, Milo, and Jake exit the building and drive to one of Roshburg's taxi centers, where multiple taxicab companies share parking space. Among this union-of-sorts are small businesses, with just one taxicab and one or two drivers, and larger businesses. (Finance/law can be used to have deeper knowledge about the specifics.)

There they meet several taxi drivers; some of them on a break or just about to head out.

You ask around about a Ron Parks. It seems the word has spread out among the drivers, and most at least recognize the name.

"I've heard of him. We held a moment's silence for the man. I think he had two kids? Don't know anything more than that. Why're you asking?"

"Oh yeah, Parks. He died to some kind of heart problem. We figure that means he was killed by that Roshburg Killer. Either that or he was lying about his jogging activities. Poor man."

"I don't want any trouble. Just go away, please."

"Hm. Ron works for Americab-Rosh. I mean, worked. So, are you detectives or something? You look like... erm."

Male Human

"Mr. Adrien? If you'll be learning about the families, I'd like to go along with you. Ms. Freeman, Ms. Delgado?"

GM MM MG wrote:

I know something about law and finance, so perhaps I can investigate the victim's criminal records and financial movements, though in real like I have no idea how to do something like that, so perhaps a couple of rolls

LAw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Finance: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

(Hm, I don't know how you'd access the victims' criminal records or financial movements, either. The former could be done if you sneaked into a police station or something; for the latter you could find something in a bank office.)

(In any case, it could just be easier to find out where the victims lived, and interview their neighbors. Or, since you know that these people are dead, you could approach their families and pretend to be a friend of the deceased. Once you have someone's name, it's pretty easy to look up the address or phone number.)

Artemiy Sewick | Russian

Artemiy lets the others take point on the more investigative approaches, dealing with follow-up questions to certain answers; he contents himself with paying close attention to the people who respond. In particular, the one who brushes them off gets a narrowed gaze as the Russian tries to memorize his appearance, possibly for later questioning. In his experience, anyone who's that quick to avoid answers has something to hide.

To cab-man: "This is a private investigation on behalf of our client. She is personally invested in this case, and the cops aren't treating it as seriously as she'd like. If any of you could just tell us which cab was his, I won't bother you any further. If you DO want to help out more than that, I'll give you a number you can contact me."

Team 1:
(Jake: Do you give your actual phone number or a fake one?)

The interviewed driver hesitantly gives Jake and the others directions to the office of Americab-Rosh, the taxi company Parks worked for. He says he doesn't know which cab the victim drove, but the company should.

You walk across the parking lot of taxicabs, and into the office the man pointed you to. The office building of Americab-Rosh is a two-storey building, not very large. (At this point you all can roll People.)

"Hey, how can I- Whoa-whoa. What are you doing here?" You are greeted by a man in a suit, who is obviously unhappy to see you walk in.

"Linda, call the security," he speaks quickly and quietly to someone in the next room.

(At this point, you all can roll Perception and People.)

Artemiy Sewick | Russian

First People: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 5
Second People: 1d20 ⇒ 7

GM MM MG wrote:

Sort of depends. Are prepaid drop phones as ubiquitous in '04 as now? I didn't get my first cell phone until '07.

Male Human

So, pending a response from Adrien, can I bring Lisa and Kira along to flip through some yellow pages and try to zone in on one of the families? Which doesn't sound creepy at all.

Male Human

people: 1d20 ⇒ 19
perception: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Milo follows along trying not to draw to much attention to himself, When the suited man stops them, Fiddling around with his gear he pulls out his badge. "Sorry sir, for the intrusion. we just need a look at the crime scene. FBI, i'm taking a look at the local murders on behalf of a friend, these fine people with me are assisting "

Will Wesson wrote:
"Mr. Adrien? If you'll be learning about the families, I'd like to go along with you. Ms. Freeman, Ms. Delgado?"

After a short reflection -très bien, I'll go with you.

Will Wesson wrote:

(Nothing's stopping you. You could leave one of those two for Malcolm? I'm going to assume you didn't; feel free to say OOC if you'd like one of them to stay behind.)

Artemiy:
You can only guess why the suit man is acting this way. He seems unhappy? That's your first (and so far only) impression.

Milo:
You notice Artemiy acting very suspiciously. He does something with his hands, and then tries to hide it with his posture. The man with the suit seems to have noticed, too.

(On a completely unrelated note, I'd like to remind you that name-dropping the FBI has its consequences. Since you're on a non-official case here. Just to make sure we're on the same page.)

(Milo noticed Artemiy's odd behavior before he would have gotten the opportunity to speak, so you can retcon what you spoke, to reflect your info. There's something strange about one of the "fine people", after all.)

Team 2: Adrien, Will, Delgado, Freeman:
17:10

"Wait, are we going to be talking to the victims' families? Ugh." Delgado says, a displeased look on her face.

"Hey, you called them victims. So have you changed your mind about this being a prank?" Freeman retorts, and almost smiles until Delgado's piercing, icy glare silences her.

You get an address book, flip through some yellow pages, get some coffee, and make a few phone calls...

17:55

After a while, the team gets its fourth address. You now have the all the known victims' (Parks, Maxhold, House, and Herring's) home addresses.

(What will you do now?)

Male Human

If Malcolm wants to grab an NPC for his thing, it's perfectly cool with me. Edit: Ill post later too, on break now.

GM MM MG wrote:

Not my favorite Idea, although at the moment I'm not seeing any way for us four to obtain more relevant information without a direct interview with the families. -

Male Human

Thanks gm, i will take advantage of the recon. noticing the oddness he might not have mentioned fbi or anything, risk of reputation and all.

" Sorry sir for the intrusion, we just need to take a peek at the crime scene. We won't be too long i promise" Whispering to Artemiy's "Calm down, nothing to worry about"

Can somebody remind me if Will presented himself as a lawyer??

Male Human

Aye, that he did.

If you had to investigate the families as a part of a case and without making too much noise, what would you do Will?

Jake leaves his temporary number with the cab drivers and moves on.

Jake chimes in to Will's question.

"As a lawyer he might have a bit of an in. Maybe pass it off as some kind of potential corporate lawsuit and he's putting feelers out for potential supporters."

Male Human

"Ding ding." Will waves his finger at the (teleporting?) detectives suggestion.

"My other options would run the risk of falling behind at work, which would make people start asking questions. That or trying to skulk around after hours, and that would be unwise at best. The best way to hide is to look like you are supposed to be there. I've already been asking about getting my first real case. I may as well use the excuse, right?"

Team 1:
Jake's People: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
Jake's Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

(Jake gets the same impression as Milo: you can read the spoiler a couple posts above.)

Milo tries to defuse the tense situation, to no avail. "Get out, all of you now! Right now!" shouts the suited man.

You're in the reception office of the office building. It's not a large room at all: it has two desks, a water cooler, two sofas, and some office plants. The actual offices are just up ahead, past the suited man.

"Crime scene, my ass..."

(What will you do now?)

(Yeah, Jake, you're in Team 1, at the taxi company building. But I guess you had a chance to chat with Adrien and Will before you left.)

Team 2:
(Hmm, why don't you start by deciding which victim's history and family you'll be looking into?)

From what I understand I should get another d20 on Perception since it's my Profession skill?

(Oh, you're right.)

Jake's 2nd Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Jake:
You notice your Russian companion acting oddly. He did something with his hands: for a moment it looked like he was going to take out something from his pockets, or something like that. The way he did it was insincere, at least: he was trying to hide it with his posture. Whatever could it be that he was trying to pull, just now?

Jake mentally files that away, but says nothing for now. He reluctantly agrees to leave.

"Eitherof you boys know how to pick a lock? I want into that cab, with or without their permission."

Artemiy Sewick | Russian

Hmm. What skill would that use, GM? Doesn't look like it's called out as falling under one in the player's handbook, although Agility and Underground both seem like decent options.

Artemiy frowns and shrugs as the team leaves, the suited man angrily shouting behind them. At Jake's question, he hesitates for a moment, then nods. "I can give it a try. Call it a youth misspent." The Russian shoves his hands in his pockets and regards Jake. "What are you thinking, Jake...?" He trails off after the man's first name, more as if searching for a surname than being unsure how to finish the question.

"I'm thinking we need some solid leads or this case is dead in the water. Sometimes to do the right thing you've got to mix in a little wrong."

"We can come back tonight when there'll be less people and pop the doors open. Maybe we find something, maybe we don't. Either way we can move on."

Jake does not at all acknowledge Jingles' fishing.

(Artemiy: Yes, both Agility and Underground can be used; it's the player's choice which one they use. Agility is basically all things "Dexterity" rolled into one, whereas Underground is about "what you don't expect a law-abiding citizen to know". Either works for lock-picking. In general, the lines between Skills aren't that rigid: find the closest match, or matches.)

Team 1:
Reluctantly, but given few options, you leave.

19:00

You're in the parking lot for taxi cars. Right now, it seems to be a busy time for them, and there aren't that many here.

[ooc](So, will you wait for the night and come back then? What will you do in the meantime?)

Male Human

"Breaking and entering..." Milo audibly sighs in response to Jake, "Yes, i can, i'm good at getting into place's i'm not wanted. Picking a lock like that shouldn't be too difficult...Shall I? "

Yeah, wait for night and come back later.

"Anybody have ideas for something else we can check out in the meantime? If not, may be best to just split up and meet back later with everyone, see if they dug anything up."

Male Human

We may as well continue down the list with Mz. House. Let us head out shall we?

Will gets up from his seat with a gentle wave to the others.

Adriens agrees, through in the inside not coming up with a better plan hurts his ego.

Team 1:
(I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that. Are you doing anything worthwhile during these 4-5 hours until night?)

Team 2:
(House would be a difficult place to start. Moving down the list, I assume you want to track down Herring?)

Lewis Herring. Age 29, died to a heart failure two weeks ago. According to the newspapers, he was a construction worker, and died on the job. From what Malcolm's team uncovered yesterday, you are quite sure that Lewis Herring was the fifth victim.

But that's all you know about him. Luckily, with diligent and wily snooping one can find out more. (You could make phone calls to construction sites and trade unions, or drive around town looking for construction sites. For example. What will you do now?)

Male Human

I'd vote phone calls to trade unions.

Will makes a few calls. He tries to get his foot in the door by explaining that he's working with the government on this case, which, technically speaking given his recent choice of companions, is true.

deception: 2d10 + 5 ⇒ (9, 1) + 5 = 15

Team 2:
Will phones the trade unions, and inquires about Lewis Herring. He finally hits the mark when he calls the right union: the phone operator on the other end recognized Herring's name. However, she seems to find of his questions a bit strange:

"Well, sir, I'm sorry but we've been told to seal mister Herring's files after his unusual death—"

At least she let it slip that Herring died an usual death: this confirms that the team is on the right track.

"—so I guess, er, I need to contact my boss and talk about it. But, sir, I was under the impression that someone from the police is already looking into this? You said you worked for the government, sir?"

The phone operator could be onto you. What will you do now? If you back away now, you'd be back to square one, mostly.)

I guess the after the first speech "usual" was meant to be an "unusual", right?

Adrien kill some time spinning a pen while Will is at the phone.

(That's right, thank you. In my defense, "an un-" is almost a tongue-twister, so my mind probably got confused.)

Male Human

"I've been asked to work with an agent to try and pull some more info where we can. If ya can put me on the horn with your boss, I'm sure we can get things squared away." A moment before the operator would speak he adds with a slightly quieter, yet still friendly ton of voice.

"And hey. I know how all this sounds. I guess it's a lot to ask for a bit of trust from a stranger nowadays, huh?"

That's a convenient typo, my eyes just glazed over it the first three times I read the post. Lemme know if there's a point where I can roll deception again, probably not, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Team 2:
(Correct, only one Deception roll for this.)

Will doesn't get a chance to see if pity gets him any points, because the phone operator seems to ignore the quieter addition. It probably didn't hurt?

"Standby, please."

Will gets put on one of those of waiting lines. Soothing elevator music plays on the background. The kind of music that is intended to relax and make the situation feel less tense, but more often than not it just ends up making the situation comical or even more frustrating. Different people react to the music different ways, most likely.

This goes on for a couple of minutes, until someone gets on the other end.

"Tyrone Wyatt, American Builders Union representative, speaking."

Wyatt has a dark bass voice, bringing to mind a heavy and important person. If Will believes in stereotypes, he gets the impression that he's a little overweight.

"Now I want to know who this is, and if there's anything I can help you with."

His tone, on the other hand, paints him as patient and friendly.

(Different person, different roll: make another Deception if you want to withhold truths from him. While you're at it, roll People. You too, Adrien.)

Male Human

I mean i guess we wait, idk if the other's have any other idea's .

Artemiy Sewick | Russian

Split up and look for clues? By which I mean split up and do whatever until we reconvene this evening to actually look for clues.

Artemiy nods. "Splitting up may be best. Keep our profile low. Meet up a few blocks away from here, and walk?"
