DM-Salsa Presents: The Shadow Queen (Inactive)

Game Master AdamWarnock

The town of Hammenholdt has been lucky. Prosperous from trade, the town has been able to afford peace as few can.

But its luck has run out and something from the darkest shadows now plagues the town.

Nah - meant if you were just going to carry them, then myself or Wilhelm would use the blade :) - sorry Common tunga not their first language ;)

Skäne accepts the blade with a grin, feels it weight with a nod, then tries a few thrusts and swipes.

"God weight... God Blade..."

I'm going to get that PDF tomorrow if I have the cash after bills and stuff. So yes, I'd be fine with Skane being rebuilt as a Skald.

Kylar accepts the dagger with a nod of thanks. "A fine blade."

He looks around at the party, some with fresh blood upon them though the wounds have mostly been closed now. He reviewed the spells he still had memorized after his casting that day. "Making camp may be wise." Then he looks at the tree. "But not here."

After a half-hour's hike, the group finds a small clearing a ways off the path near a small brook. There's only room for a fire and the bedrolls, though.

Helena kneels by the brook, attempting to scrub the blood and filth from her skin and clothes.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla turns to the men among her comrades: "Please wait until we're done." She gives Delilah a sign inviting her to join and follows Helena. She addresses Helena with muffled voice as they approach: "Don't worry, Lady Helena. It's just Delilah and me." Before she actually begins deal with the clotting blood all over her she has a look around.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

Back at the camp she sits down in the middle of it. "Fire might not be a good idea." She sighs, because she could really use one right now. She gets some of today's ration out. Once she's done with it she checks her greatsword for notches and possible crazes. "I can hold watch in the middle of the night, if you like."

The Witch sat on the shore next to the other girls and put her feet in the cool water. While she could feel the cold, it didn't bother her thanks to her heritage. Turning to the blind woman, "I don't think I properly thanked you for saving my life back there. So I thank you. Perhaps someday, I'll return the favor." Letting Ada out of her pouch, the little bird bathed as well, chirping happily while doing so.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

"Agreed." Wilhelm says to Rayla. He cleans up in the brook after the ladies are done. He doesn't eat though, his mind is elsewhere.

I was beginning to think this had died a sudden and mysterious death. Glad to see that my mopeyness didn't make you leave. :)

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Apologies guys - slammed at work. Will try and get something up later...

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla watches Wilhelm for a while as she eats. Finally she stands up and sits close to him. "You look as though something was bothering you... Are you worried about about Lady Gwenvier? Or is it something the Gnoll said?"

While it is getting darker and darker her eyes seem to sparkle and metallic gleam of her hair gives it something even more unreal than usual.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

"I'm an old man. I worry about great many things." Wilhelm says with a weak smile. The smile fades quickly as the sky grows darker.

"I suppose you want to know why he called me the butcher." he says. "That's easy enough. I hate goblins of all shapes and sizes. The only mercy a goblin will get from me is a quick death."

Venom, hatred, and pain are clear in his words and his eyes.

@ Skane: No worries, just post as you can.

Male Half-Elf Wizard(Abjurer)/3 HP 18/18 | Init +1 | AC 11/ T11/ FF10 | Saves Fort+3, Ref+2, Will+5 | Perception +11

"More mercy than most can expect from them," Kylar says from where he is studying his spellbook. Then he looks up. "Have goblins long troubled this region?"

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

"Been near twenty years since they was." Wilhelm answers. His eyes are dark, like a starless night.

The two Northern giants loom in the peripherals of the fire light; Skäne sitting on a tree stump listening intently whilst smoking his clay pipe - whilst Björn stands sharpening his war scythe... the rhythmic strokes of his whetstone complimenting the campfire talk.

At Wilhelm's words the huge druid asks a question in their grumbling tongue;

"Hve langt er síðan fjölskylda hans lögðu Mikla Veginum?"

þurstunga (Giant):

How long since his family journeyed the Great Road?

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne blows a stream of smoke with a hard look, translating his huge companions question;

"He asks... How long since your family walked the Great Road... passed to the next life?"

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

"Not much longer than that." Wilhelm mutters.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla listens as they speak, but she doesn't really want to push Wilhelm any more on the subject; it seems like it pains him.

"Those monsterous types are annoying. They just don't see reason, no matter how often they get their head bashed in and are just smart enough to be an annoying pest."

She pauses and takes a look around the camp. "I'll take the mid watch, as stated earlier, so I better get into our tent right now. Caydan watch over the bold ones. And over that she-lady in distress we're trying to rescue. Good night everyone!

As they sat around their camp, Delilah listened carefully. She moved next to Skäne, lightly touched his hand, and meekly said, "You know, I almost died today. And...I could really use the feeling of a strong man's arms keeping me safe. Would you be that man?"

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

Will move things along if everyone's ready.

Rayla:
About a half-hour into your watch, Wilhelm gets up and joins you. He move more like an old man than a seasoned hunter now. Something weighing on him greatly.

"Can't sleep. Mind if an old man joins you?"

Male Half-Elf Wizard(Abjurer)/3 HP 18/18 | Init +1 | AC 11/ T11/ FF10 | Saves Fort+3, Ref+2, Will+5 | Perception +11

Feeling the fatigue of a day spent in combat and magic use, Kylar gladly spreads his bedroll out and promptly falls asleep.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

"Of course I wouldn't mind!" She watches him curiously but doesn't want to become too pushy.

"You can tell me if there is anything on your mind, I'll keep it private. Otherwise... I like this this land, with all its mointains and its forests... there is something very real about it. Unforgiving, but beautiful. Sometimes I do miss my home country, though." She talks calmly but her eyes flick restlessly through the darkness which is not quite so dark for her. "Want me to tell you about the Windgras Plains, the horses and the tribes?" Maybe that will distract him a little and give him rest.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

"It's where I've lived for near fifty years." Wilhelm replies. "And you're right, it will kill you in an eyeblink, but it is beautiful."

When she asks about telling him of her home, he shakes his head.

"Not tonight. Maybe some other time, but not tonight." he answers. A few moments follow and he sighs again, this time, like the first trickles of water behind an old dam about to burst.

"Suppose you have a right to know, all of you, but I can't do that. One of you, I can tell one of you now." he says, trying to muster up the courage to talk, to let it out.

"I used to have a brother, we were a lot like the northmen there." he begins, pointing to where Bjorn and Skane sleep. "Bull-headed, brash, and invincible. We got into all sorts of trouble." He chuckles, with humor and warmth, but a bitter sadness, like grief held onto for too long lies under it.

"Goblins hadn't been a problem since my grandpap was young. We were in the woods when-- when they ambushed us. They slit his throat, and he wasn't the last of us to fall to the goblins." His voice is flat, broken. "They weren't the threat they appeared to be now, but they killed my father, many of my friends, and my sister before it was all over. My mother hung herself a week after we had cleared the goblins out of the woods. For fifteen years I kept it that way. I killed every goblin I came across. Everyone of them was raiding and killing, and I killed them. I killed, and killed, and killed until I was tired of it. I let younger men take up the mantle, and I became a hunter and a guide. And here we are. That's it."

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla sits in thought for a moment. "I am sorry for loss." She said quietly and her strange, metallic eyes gleam in the darkness straight at him. "When my village was raided by our enemies in my youth and I was taken a slave I found myself in a similar dilema. All that had a meaning to me suddenly stopped and rage was all that defined me. It's difficult to hold on to something if everything you love vanishes in an instant, difficult to remember who we are. If you look at me you see certain aspects of an angel, which is because I descent from an angel. But in the end I am still just human and there is still darkness inside of me and trying to deny it would only make it grow stronger. I would have lost myself in whatever my slavers wanted me to be if it wasn't for the voice of an actual angel to guide me, to give me hope. Sometimes, we're all lost. Sometimes, we all need an angel."

Rayla stands up and checks the environment briefly. Then she sits next and puts a hand on his arm. "I believe your family is in a better place than this - death is not the end to it all and in some place they are and look down on you and still love you. But the slaughter must end; not for the sake of your enemies, but for yours. Revenge is not all that you are. I don't condemn you, but unfortunately it's not I who must be ready to leave the past behind, it's you and it's the goblinoids." She sighs. "I am not sure whether there is a peaceful solution on this one. I have a feeling there is more going on than meets the eye... I wouldn't be surprised if this queen somehow took advantage of goblinoids in their terror for her own dark purposes. Or there is something more going on we don't know yet. I hope we can still save Lady Gweniver. Do you think you can do that? Leave the past behind and believe in a brighter future... like the Eternal Rose hopes for her brother?"

She still doubts that a simple band of goblins could overwhelm armed and trained so effectively or that they would bother to hang up bodies in such fashion. The effectiveness with which all the people who were lost were made disappear is strikingly unusual and the hobgoblin she talked to didn't know anything about the soldiers in the tree. She remains sitting next to him but her eyes scan the environment and she listens to things out of place in the sounds of the forest.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

"I pray that we will." Wilhelm says. "Get some sleep, I'll keep watch."

He does keep the watch, but doesn't object if Rayla keeps it with him.

The next morning.

The patches of sky that can be seen are slate-gray and the air turns colder with each passing moment.

"Looks like we may have the first snow of the season soon." Wilhelm comments as he helps break camp.

Soon the party is on a game trail leading to the east. The trees begin to grow sparser and the ground becomes more hilly.

Perception checks please.

Björn rises, stretching impossibly tall as he welcomes a new day. At Wilhelm's words the giant druid looks skyward and nods with a smile.

With a soft, almost wistful tone the Northman speaks;

The Northmen ready themselves and join the group, more subdued that they have been.
