Ring of Counterspells This ring might seem to be a ring of spell storing upon first examination. However, while it allows a single spell of 1st through 6th level to be cast into it, that spell cannot be cast out of the ring again. Instead, should that spell ever be cast upon the wearer, the spell is immediately countered, as a counterspell action, requiring no action (or even knowledge) on the wearer's part. Once so used, the spell cast within the ring is gone. A new spell (or the same one as before) may be placed in it again.

Moderate evocation; CL 11th; Forge Ring, imbue with spell ability; Price 4,000 gp.
Skeptic +2 save vs. illusion.
Spell Focus: Conjuration Spells from one school of magic have +1 to their save DC.
Summoner's Charm (+1r) (Su) Increase duration of summoning spells by 1/2 level (permanent at 20).

Short and thinly built, Nowzai is hardly an imposing figure. He has medium brown skin and dark brown eyes. His head is shaved completely bald, but he wears a long black goatee beard, speckled with grays. Nowzai's skin shows his age, but it is clear he has lived a labor-free life. His forearms are banded with tattoos of arcane formulae.

Nowzai was born in the Sultanate of Zeif to a minor noble family. As the sixth son, he had very little chance of inheriting the family title, but his father was rich enough to pay for Nowzai's apprenticeship to a local wizard. Unfortunately, Nowzai's mentor, the master summoner Galazahn, was strict, spiteful and worse of all, paranoid. Galazahn was slow to teach Nowzai, not because his apprentice was dimwitted, but because he was afraid Nowzai would surpass and ultimately murder him with his secrets. Nowzai tried several times to break from the apprenticeship, but neither Galazahn nor his father would support him, seeing such a move as a breach of contract and smear of honor.

Despite this difficulty, Nowzai strongly respected Galazahn and his knowledge, and spent the many years of apprenticeship waiting patiently for his chance to learn. His time was spent in study of mundane lore, and Nowzai has a near encyclopedic repitoire of information. Nowzai took pains to research and find hidden and obscure pieces of lore, especially for his love: the planar multiverse and its many iconic inhabitants.

Three years ago, three tragic events befell Nowzai. The first was the death of his father, at nearly 80 years of age. His oldest brother, Nowzan, himself 61 years old, careless as he took control of the family after waiting so long, wastefully spent the hereditary fortune in a matter of months - before anyone could put him in check, they were nearly destitute. At nearly the same time, Galazahn died, consumed by one of his own (paranoia-driven) spells of abjuration. Unfortunately for Nowzai, with his master took went also the secret cyphers to unlock his extensive collection of arcane lore.

48 years old, with little money, and denied the legacy of his mentor, Nowzai left Galazahn's tower secured by his master's powerful magic wards and set out for Greyhawk City. A long trek from Zeif, Nowzai nonetheless hoped he could find help there at the Arcane University to help unlock Galazahn's code - with that lore attained, he would be able to claim his master's place, and also earn a decent living.

Nowzai never made it to Greyhawk City...

Personality
Nowzai is polite to a fault, and is genuinely selfless towards those in need. He will think nothing of giving away his every possession. This trait can be used against him, however - he is not gullible, but a close companion could easily take advantage of his generosity. Nowzai possesses "the patience of the elves" as one of that race once told him. He rarely, if ever, gets overcome by emotions - he is deliberate in every action, thoughtful before speaking.

Nowzai's great love is lore. He would trek to the far corners of Oerth if only to find a shred of lost or secret information. Nowzai finds solace in study and research, and will happily while away days in a new library.

Nowzai is friendly and accomodating to everyone he meets, but his bookish nature usually works against him. He has few friends, and only counts his young sister, Laihl, as a close confidant.

By the way, this chase sequence is more of a beta for me to figure out how to do more things like this in the future. The issue is the standard "I move/I act/he moves/he acts" sequence doesn't work well for time-pressed chase type things.

I'm taking notes and will improve this for the future. I appreciate you guys bearing with me and helping me refine it.

Tike already said no stealth, and we have been running so stealth is kind of a moot point. And just because I call out wouldn't mean that the kobold can see Dalamus, he knows people are chasing him not who or where other than the guy with the bright light, I kinda stand out. I would bet he is looking at me more than anyone else anyway.

Advice for improvement:

1) Maybe next time don't do it round by round, just figure out how far we have to run, decide on how many rolls need to be made to reach the goal and say ok anyone chasing the kobold at a full sprint give me 4 Acro rolls at a DC 17, if you fail roll 2 more as you try and catch up after a fall and take a d6 of damage. If you are doing a double move it's 8 rolls at a DC 12, 4 more if you fail. d4 damage if you fall, etc
2) Ask for If This/Then That options - I am running after the kobold if I catch him I will subdue him, if I get to a fork I will pause and listen. We would then include an attack roll and a perception check in our rolls

This way we won't have to worry about rounds we could get everything done in one box and move it along faster. You could wrap up the whole thing in one Narrative.

Thoughts?


Not a bad idea ... assuming there aren't things like forks etc., but maybe I can make something a bit cleaner. (which there was, but the kobold failed so much he never got there)

If there are things like a fork of a choice that has to be made then you would have the pre-rolls lead to that check point and then we would start the next set of actions from there.


Dave and I were having a discussion about XP today (as fellow PbP GMs), and I'm considering moving to the fast track XP table.

If I decide to do that, what it means for you all is less XP to level, but I'll probably cut out a few more encounters in the modules that I deem "superfluous." This may reduce the original "sanctity" of the module but if you enjoyed the Lucky Monkey mystery search, I completely changed that from the module already and hopefully that was seamless to you all?

Finally, looking through the posts, I didn't seem to find it, but did I give a story award for curing Pad? I intended to, but couldn't find it. Anyone else see it?

Did I miss anything?

I read that as "250 if you participated (which Nowzai didn't), and extra 250 for those who did something special."

Magma is correct, you were doing the wiz testing (counts as part of the festival participation) and you got some specific XP for that for the success, I believe ... going to check

For curing Pad, everyone gets 500xp

EDIT: It was a prestige point in addition, so just the 250xp for participation.

Adding in DM mistakes, that's another 950 on top of what you have.

With that, I need level up info from Nemoris, Nowzai, and Malcolm. Takes effect after your next rest.

No, that 950 is just for Nowzai since he was out for a bit and we're making sure he knows what he got and didn't get. everyone else just gains 500 for Pad.

Don't know anything about it, myself. Remember that rare feats (like rare spells) require a trainer who knows them or some other way of learning them.

Cool, up to you on how hard I have to look etc. to find that. I'd definitely be willing to side quest, or wait until we run across someone who can teach me. I'm guessing for my prestige class I'm going to have to disappear in the woods or something to find a Robin Hood type that can teach me :)

Oh, so I somehow managed to put my level up on the other tab, what do you want me to do about it? I can just repost the text here, leave it there (I already spoilered it out). But should be all good as far as skills, stats, and the like.

Armor Training: Starting at 3rd level, a fighter learns to be more maneuverable while wearing armor. Whenever he is wearing armor, he reduces the armor check penalty by 1 (to a minimum of 0) and increases the maximum Dexterity bonus allowed by his armor by 1.

In addition, a fighter can also move at his normal speed while wearing medium armor.

Did Nowzai get any of his spells back when he was raised? Do we need to rest so he is full?

I would like to rest as well because we have at least 3 people that leveled.

So I was reading up on Rapid Reload and I realized we were incorrect on the rule last combat. Rapid reload is a free action to reload the revolver: Advanced Firearms: Advanced firearms are chamber-loaded. It is a move action to load a one-handed or two-handed advanced firearm to its full capacity. So since it's a move action already it does drop to a free action. Just wanted to make sure we both knew that now

Note I'm very aware of how Handle Animal works ... I've run several pet creatures. In this case, getting a horse to go somewhere it doesn't want to go ... aka give it a command it's capable of following but doesn't want to do, falls under "push". The tube is smaller than it is wide (1 square vs 2, so it has to squeeze, it smells terrible and stinks of hostile creatures. Check failed, move on. No more discussion on the horses

Totally cool man, just wanted to make sure. Definitely your call and not trying to argue, just want to know what I can do and can't. This will be my first guy with handle animal at all, so wanted to make sure it was all understood.

FYI, I'm on pretty limited internet this weekend, will try to check my phone, but probably safe to bet I won't have any updates till Monday, sorry!
