Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Rhiannon d'Deneith wrote:
Wait, does that mean I have to charge through an elemental wall?

Erm,... not yet? :)

I'm just trying to think of a way for Justin to slow it down. If you yell 'Charge'! I promise you our favorite pyromaniac will not make you run through a wall of fire. Although I might still put one BEHIND it to make it harder to get away. :)

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

I'm good with that

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Unless otherwise sensing something off, Ekuur finally removes his obsidian holy symbol and intones a prayer to the Sacred Flame. Requesting aid in the coming battle, he casts prayer on his allies.

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

"They're on the run, Justin....Justin? Where are you?"

She felt a shiver of fear run through her as she realized that the wizard was no longer responding. She saw Merle heading for the entrance in the wall and she hurried to catch up, worried about what had happened to the others.

Bribes always welcome

OK I'm on a phone now, but group unit is base 12. The dragon has a 25. Post actions and I have some time tomorrow to go through stuff. Those on the outside you have an action. There is still fighting around the front. There are also retreating Signer infiltrators

The dragon's fire splatters Karrin with red agony. The dragon rears, looking for a challenge

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

Leveling the spear at the dragon Rhiannon locks eyes with the beast before exploding forwards in a thunderous charge, black mist creating an ominous trail as she hurtles towards the enemy

1d20 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 20 = 37 Cavalier's Charge, banner, prayer
2d8 + 18 ⇒ (5, 4) + 18 = 27

Initiatives: Dragon fight (12)
Dragon: Firebreath
Karrin:15 (pending)
Justin: 15 (holding-elemental wall?)
Ekuur: 12 (Prayer)
Rhiannon: 12 (CHAAARGE!)

Rhiannon levels her weapon and charges across the battlefield, her mount's hooves thundering across the tiles of the large atrium. She smashes headlong into the reptilian beast, her lance piercing its scaly hide and eliciting a bellow of rage and pain.

Naridre and Merle run to the crumbled opening. They peer in, but can see little from the vantage point. Naridre's delicately-attuned psionic senses pick up ...something...in the room beyond. But neither sense the presence of their party members. Something must be awry. Issac runs up next to them, scanning the outside for any stragglers.

"Mayhap we go in and see what's what?" He says

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"Works for me. Seph wait here and keep an eye on things" Merle heads into the room after letting Seph down. As she moves in she casts Detect magic

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

Karrin was going to do what she had planned before, save the baby, distract the dragon.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Seeing Karrin grabbing the mother and infant, and Rhiannon setting her self for the charge, Justin does what Justin does best. Elemental Mayhem.

With a flowing chant and a pinch of Guano and sulpher, Justin sends a tiny blossom of flame heading towards the dragon. Which explodes into a terrific fiery burst in the beasts face.

Elemental Wall later, while no one has reached it yet, Fireball NOW! :)

FIreball, saveDC:18 for 1/2 damage 11d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1, 1, 3, 6, 3, 3, 3, 1, 5, 1) + 4 = 34

All my feats/bonuses make the fireball 11d6. If 10d6 is max, then remove the last dice (1) makes total 33. That was a lame roll. Seriously. :P

Ugh. I had posted a reply to this and somehow it went missing :((((

Karrin powers through the agonizing pain and pounds across the atrium to the mother and child. Scooping both up she hollers...

YOINK!

..And runs for an archway framed in Palm trees that seems to lead out of the atrium

The fireball slams into the dragon, but the flames seem to have no effect on the large wyrm

Merle squeezes through the small opening, followed by Issac and I'm assuming Naridre. The enter the large temple room. Merle casts detect magic and feels a surge of potent divine magic rolling through the empty vault

Behold the trials of The Lord of Mists! A voice booms in their minds

the three suddenly find themselves in a dry hot place staring at a large dragon. Rhiannon slams into it as Justin hurls a fireball at it

Welcome to the party

Female catfolk sorceror 11

".....Well crap....." Is all Merle can currently think of to sum up the current situation.

What Init should Merle, Issac and Nari be going on or do you want us to roll?

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"So," a slightly singed Karrin says to the young mother in her arms, "Got any idea where we might be safe? You know till me and my friends can talk to the reluctant father?"

Karrin will run (if she can go in a straight line over relatively flat ground) through that arch, if not she'll be taking a double move. With quickened expedious retreat she moves at 120 feet per turn, if she can run she'd be going at 240.

Lets stay easy and all go on base 12 . I'll let you take an action this round, so go as if you wre in the rd 1 sequence. Dragon has already gone

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"Hmm okay fire dosent do much lets try electricity instead" Merle hurls a lightning bolt at it (Assuming she can do it without hitting anyone else)

8d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 5, 2, 4, 6, 3) = 31 Dc 18 reflex for half

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin flinches, closing his eyes against the blast of his potentially most powerful spell. He blinks, clearing the dust of the blast from his eyes as Rhiannon charges in. He is dismayed (although not particularly surprised) to find that his fireball had,... no effect.

"You have GOT to be kidding me! Fire resistance I can handle. But fire proof?!? What is this world coming to,... (whichever one we're on),... when a guy can't even broil a monster?!?" Justin complains loudly to any who will listen.

Merle wrote:
".....Well crap....."

"Oh, hey guys! Glad you could make it! Step right up! there's a 'NO WAITING' policy on this beastie!" Justin waves cheerfully at the other half of the group.

"Sorry dragon! Mother and baby are now OFF the menu! But we have all the magic and steel you can eat!" He taunts the beast, while keeping an eye out for the best way to dodge the next blast.

"Now if I just have something memorized that will affect you,..."

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

There wasn't time to really figure out what was going on. There was a dragon. And Karrin was carrying someone away from it at speed. Probably trying to rescue someone. Good enough. She could at least try to help.

She threw up an Ectoplasmic Wall between the dragon and the fleeing Karrin. Hopefully that would at least slow it down a few seconds which should be long enough for the others to distract it.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

While waiting for the next round ...

"Justin, I know little of the dragons on most worlds, but I do know that their scale color usually helps identify their strengths and weaknesses. This one is bronze, do you know what that might indicate?"

Just thinking out loud here folks, but as bronze dragons are usually (yes, I know not always) good aligned, might fighting it actually be a bad thing?

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin's mind whirls at Ekuur's question. The wizard simply couldn't let a question like that go unanswered, even if they were about to fight for their lives. His mind found the answer on autopilot, even as the more focused, practical part was reviewing his memorized spells, trying to find one that could damage or incapacitate the creature.

"Well on MY prime world, Bronze dragons were usually good creatures."

"But not necessarily friendly. And since this one seems determined to cook us and eat us, not necessarily in that order, I think that might be a moot point!"

I must step in and apologize. The dragon is actually a brassy hue. Brassy...

And it might be good-aligned, but even good-aligned things can have murderhoboish tendencies...

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

No doubt. That's why I said usually ... but it still tends to make me think there's more to this scene than a simple 'dragon going after baby' situation. Like is this baby Hitler or something ... :-)

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

If it's baby Hitler all we need to do is get him into art school. Problem solved. Also did we just hit Godwin's law for the first time? Thanks a lot Ekuur! :P

A roiling wall of shimmering matter congeals between the dragon and Karrin. Marle points and a bolt flashes at the wyrm

reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

The bolt elicits a hissing roar of pain.

Issac runs up to the beast..

"OI! Lizard lips! Why pick on a bint and a rug chewer when yeh've got a real live Cage Rat to dance with?"

+10/+5 +1 Frost Greatsword 2d6+4+1d6 cold/19-20)

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 192d6 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 4 + (4) = 15

Issac's greatsword, smoking in the hot desert air, bounces off the dragon's scales

"Our only hope is to find a cave safe from the sun to let my babe rest and grow."

"Mighty Nol you say?" Karrin muses, "Well know any caves near by?"

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"OK. So it LIKES fire. Go figure." Justin frowns.

The wizard holds out a hand and furrows his brow in concentration.

"Let's see if the beast like the taste of this! Hey! Scaley! You got a hot temper! Why don't you CHILL OUT?!"

And a shimmering wall of frozen air forms a semi circle behind the dragon, cutting off it's retreat from the frontal assaults of Isaac and Rhiannon.

"Hey, you guys want to hurry this up? I can't keep this up forever!" he calls to his comrades, his brow already showing the strain of keeping up the elemental wall.

Using Elemental Wall Evocation power. (As wall of fire, but Ice damage for this one) 2d4 cold damage each round.(+4 for Intense spells power) (I can keep it up for 8 rnds max) or 2d6+12 if it passes through it. NO save for half damage.

COld dmg, rnd 1: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3) + 4 = 9

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle puts another lightning bolt into it

8d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 2, 1, 5, 1, 2) = 22

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

As the dragon turns to engage Issac, Rhiannon wheels around hurtling into another charge, practically standing in the saddle as she throws her full momenum behind the impact.

Cavalier's charge
1d20 + 20 ⇒ (19) + 20 = 39
2d8 + 18 ⇒ (2, 8) + 18 = 28

I have not been factoring in the dragon's spell resistance. Merle could you roll one for your lightning bolt? Justin, one as well for your wall. Previous spells I will let stand

Rhiannon scores a telling blow, with smoking dragon blood running down her lance

"Mighty Nol you say?" Karrin muses, "Well know any caves near by?"

The woman jangles as her gold jewelry rings against Karrin's armor

"Mighty Nol is the sheik of the gods of our land. He rides his mighty sun chariot across the sky, searching for demons to battle. He saw me at the river filling a jar and seized me. He kept me as his concubine, then I became gravid with his child. He brought me to this desert temple so as to not anger his wife Chyasis, queen of the Moon. I don't know why he is so angry."

The woman starts weeping

"In the hills ahead there are caves that we can hide in. I must protect my child, though I do not know how to withstand a god"

Karrin searches her memory, and remembers a footnote in an old scroll talking about some minor godling named Nol, who had been an ancient sun god off in some distant corner of the Prime. That was thousands of years ago, and her recollection was he battled and killed his son, and then due to the destruction this wrought soon perished himself with his worshippers disappearing

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Observing the dragon's use of fire and the others using cold against it, Nari's eyes glow a brilliant green as she pulls the kinetic energy out of the air around her hand, turning it icy, deadly cold. A cold she then hurls at the dragon.

"Well god withstandering is best left to the professionals," Karrin says, "Hiding from gods is much easier when your deity is part of a pantheon, the trick is just finding another god that wants to give you shelter. My advise is finding some god of the underworld or such, someone that has a domain that sun gods don't hang out at.

"But anyways, there's this theory that dads are always scared that their sons will grow up to slay them, and I suppose that might be doubly so for dragons, you know because they have to worry about that sort of thing. But you got a cute little son with all his fingers and toes and his dad is probably more then a little bit paranoid. Funny thing is that because he's chasing you and trying to kill him that's likely going to build up some resentment with the little guy once he's older. It's what you call a self filling proficiency or whatever. That's the sort of thing you as a mother need to try and avoid, teach the little guy that there's a better way, and that dad may be crazy but he's probably got some good qualities as well. Sun gods help with growing flowers and vegetables and stuff. You know that can't be all bad. Unless you live in a desert . . . and then you probably wish the sun gods would give you break. But still he's helpful for letting you see and stuff so there's always that."

Karrin burns though a few quickened expedious retreats to keep them traveling at a good speed.

Next round actions
Ekuur is conflicted, as this obviously mighty being of fire fights his comrades. Is this Nol a servant of the Sacred Flame? However, as he realizes his prayer earlier is aiding his allies and hindering his foe, he understands that servant or no, he is meant to battle this creature. He raises his trikal, and even though he realizes the flames surrounding its blades will likely have no effect, the iron is still quite sharp, and he lashes out at the beast.

trikal 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
damage 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 not going to bother with the fire damage
