Interest Check- (PFRPG1) either Darksun or Forgotten Realms

Recruitment

I was thinking of trying to run a play by post since I can't get in one. Either way it would use the Pathfinder rules with some modifiers for the setting.

I was going to do A Darksun campaign. But I have not run one before. It would take a little work but looks like it would be fun.

or

Going back to my old favorite the Forgotten Realms. I was thinking a Waterdeep/ Undermountain thing. Maybe Myth Drannor?

What do you think? Anyway it wont be for a month or so. I need to reread everything since it's been awhile,

I keep wanting to give Dark Sun a whirl. I’d be down for that.

Both could be a lot of fun. I lean a little more towards FR, but that's only cuz it's my second favorite setting, right behind Golarion.

Realms or Darksun...Im partial to the Realms

I would kill and/or bake homemade cookies for a Waterdeep campaign.

Darksun could also be cool, but not as versed in the world. I think more folks have access to the 3e Forgotten Realms stuff than Darksun sources as well. At the same time, Darksun is done less often which might appeal to some.

So your very first post on these forums is to start a game. Do you have any history of running such a game before! Maybe on giantitp, or somewhere else?

Oh man Dark Sun... how would you handle psionics?

No. I haven't run a play by post before. But I'm not making promises, just asking what others would like to play.

I have been playing since the D&D basic set and DMing since AD&D first edition. That's 27 years of being a GM. I've run D&D, AD&D, , Gamma World, Rifts, Mutants And Masterminds, Hero, Torg (which no one seems to remember), Starwars, Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage.

I will be using the Ultimate Psionics book from Dreamscarred Press. Wild talents will be rolled (or chosen. Not sure which yet). I've found a good conversion for Pathfinder that I'll be using.

If I run a Forgotten Realms campaign it will be more in Undermountain than Waterdeep.

Well you won't have trouble finding people that want to play pathfinder here =)

People new to PbP tend to ghost after they realize its a time commitment measured in months for short modules and year for APs. Or that the people you choose to play with may ghost and the game can't recover from high player turn over.

That leads to a lot of people not bothering unless whomever they're scrutinizing has proven to last with a high post amount.

I personally hate this tendency because new people who only want to play tend not to be able to get into games. This was my problem starting out, which I only managed to break out of by taking over running an orphaned AP.

But yeah you'll find plenty of people willing to take a chance on a GM

Well my old group pretty much gave up the game so I need something to scratch the itch. I live in a rural area so it's hard to find players.

Hello and Welcome FairyGM,
If I may recommend, here is a great thread that includes a link to a PDF put together by Bodhizen, with the input of various forum-lurkers. It is a comprehensive PF1e conversion/overlay for adventures in Dark Sun. The thread and the PDF are valuable reads for any prospective Pathfinder Dark Sun GM.

I myself actually have a Dark Sun PBP on the back burner, set here on these forums, using the ShadowDark rule set. Feel free to peruse the 'Campaign Info' tab for any inspiration for your own game.

There's at least a couple of us here that have PbP as our primary creative outlet so regardless I hope you find something to scratch your TTRPG itch =)

I don't know a lot about either setting you've proposed, but I was just reading about psionics a couple weeks ago and would def be interested in a game utilizing that system.

@Gamemaster Zedth Thanks for the links. I already found them though. That was the main reason I wanted to run one in Dark Sun.

@Crisischild Dark sun is a post apocalyptic setting in a desert world where there is very little metal. Arcane magic is illegal, because some (not all) users draw life from the land itself, destroying all plant life in the area. Clerics have no gods, just elemental domains. and Psionics are common

The Waterdeep/Undermountain one is set in the Forgotten Realms. Waterdeep is a very large city on the north west coast of the continent where you can find almost anything. Underneath the city is the dungeon called Undermountain. It's rumored to be the largest dungeon in the realms.

I'm also starting to think about a Mythic Way of the Wicked. I love that campaign.

A Mythic Evil campaign would definitely be diving into the deep end of the PBP pool!

Oooh, a WotW(mythic or otherwise) would be awesome! One of the APs on the tops of my list to one day fully play.

Oooo Mythic Evil...interesting

Cool cool. Post apocalyptic can be neat, as long as it's not relentlessly negative with unfathomably stupid survivors - remind me again why it's so hard to build a wall that can keep walkers out or set up a greenhouse. I know a little about Forgotten Realms - I've played all three Baldur's Gates and at least one each of Neverwinter Knights and Icewind Dale - though I've never played it in TTRPG. A superdungeon or lost city game both sound just fine.

I've seen a few high power/gestalt/mythic WotW recruitments on this forum and I seem to recall all of them garnering quite a lot of attention from potential players, so you definitely wouldn't have trouble getting a game like that off the ground. I think this forum generally prefers high power games, though I'm not personally a huge fan.

Anyways, a lot of people check recruitment on the weekend, so you'll probably get more feedback in a few days.

I'd definitely be interested in a Dark Sun game! It's been a long time since I last journeyed under the Dark Sun through the heat-baked wastes of the Tablelands and the viper-filled city-states of the Sorceror-Kings.

Don't get me wrong though, I probably wouldn't turn down a Faerun or Way of the Wicked game either. I've been craving a good game for a while now and will snap up anything that looks interesting.

Liberty's Edge

Dark Sun is an old favorite of mine - although I've gotten very few chances to play. I do wonder how the superheroic nature of Pathfinder fit the harsh world of Athas.

For the GM: If you're new to the PBP medium, I'd recommend starting out with a short adventure to get a feel of the effort and time involved.
In my experience, 1 ~4h live session adventure would take roughly one month in PBP. A module 2-3 months, and AP's 1 year per book. (and more often than not, AP's get abandoned...)

And if you're just having trouble getting into a game, Outpost VIII is starting out. Looks like there's plenty of seats open. These are of course organized play games, but a good way to get into the game.

In any case, welcome to the wonderful world of play-by-post!

If you do any form of WotW I'm in. I was in a long game. But both my IRL and PbP game died at about book 3

Have not finished it. So more than willing to join there!

Five posts and then disappears for two weeks?

This is exactly why I asked my question about FairyGM's longevity and ability to sustain a game.

To be fair, they did say their game wouldn't be for a month or so, as they have a lot they want to re-read.

Not saying they will definitely come back, but this was an interest check, and there is that. Plus, there's nothing for them to really reply to atm.

I check in every day.

I am going to wait to see what is decided upon as I have played in both settings -- I have even played and ran Trog but that is another story and not relevant here.

I check in too. Even if just to see if it will be WotW :D

I'm still interested as well, radio silent as I've been while working on getting my own game up and running. Have you decided which idea you might run, @FairyGM?

Not yet. Still have a lot to read. Leaning toward Mythic Way of the Wicked. Dark sun is a close second.

im one of the WotW fans as stated, so im happy its first on the list

No worries. Take all the time you need.

If I may:

WotW : two weapon fighter human

DS : three-keen un-rogue

I only NOW realised what auto correct did

Thri-Kreen. Wow...

Only interested in Dark Sun and with a thri-kreen already, I'd probably do a half-giant gladiator.

Silver Crusade

Posting to make it easier to follow.

Darksun has alot of opportunities for story and WOTW is just awesome. Keenly watching this space.

Well it's been a month and I have made my decision I will be running a Mythic Way of the Wicked campaign. I will take a few weeks to finish rewriting it. If things go well I will start a Dark Sun campaign a few wees after that.

Woot

For those interested, for this AP, Talingarde is located in the Steaming Sea, far west of the Ironbound Islands, and is a forgotten, isolated colony from Cheliax that now worships Iomedae and maybe some other gods.

If you want to see a certain crime you want to commit or a benefit from that crime you want to have, post it here. I'm rewriting them tonight.

Here's what i have so far. Mostly the same with a few different benefits.

Crimes:
Arson
You have willfully started a fire that destroyed property. To be sent to Branderscar, you didn’t start just a minor little trash fire. Your act of arson threatened a major town, city, church or castle and likely cost someone their life. You’ll be punished for your crime by facing the fire yourself.

Punishment: Death by burning

Benefit: Whenever you score a critical hit with a fire attack, you receive a +2 fire damage bonus to your damage roll. This bonus is a trait bonus.

Attempted Murder
You tried to kill someone and botched the job. To be sent to Branderscar Prison, you did not try to kill just anyone. You likely assaulted someone of great importance and prominence.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You receive a +1 trait bonus to confirm critical hits

Blasphemy
Either you have defamed the great god Mitra or you have been found guilty of worshipping one of the forbidden deities (who preeminent among them is Asmodeus).

Punishment: Death by burning

Benefit: +2 trait bonus to Knowledge (religion) and Knowledge (religion) is always a class skill for you.

Consorting with the Dark Powers (Witchcraft)
You have been found guilty of summoning an evil outsider. Likely you were captured by the famed witch hunter Sir Balin of Karfeld. The last thing he said to you was, “May Mitra have mercy upon your wretched, damned soul.” If only you could get a chance at revenge!

Punishment: Death by burning

Benefit: You receive a +1 trait bonus to Knowledge (planes) and Knowledge (arcana) checks, and one of these skills (your choice) is always a class skill for you.

Desecration
You have violated one of the churchs, cathedrals or holy shrines of the great god Mitra. To be sent to Branderscar this was no minor act of vandalism. Instead you have done something flagrant and spectacular to dishonor the Shining Lord.

Punishment: Death by burning

Benefit: You receive +1 trait bonus on all saving throws against divine spells.

Desertion
You have deserted from the Talirean military and been recaptured. To get sent to Branderscar this was not some minor or routine dereliction of duty. Instead, you abandoned your post during a time of crisis -- perhaps battle or while defending the Watch Wall. Regardless of the exact circumstances, your laziness and cowardness must have caused loss of life.

Punishment: Death by hanging

Benefit: You receive one bonus skill point per level that must be spent on the Profession (Soldier) skill. Profession (Soldier) is always a class skill for you.

Dueling unto Death
You have engaged in a duel to the death and mortally wounded an opponent. The opponent was honorable enough to say nothing before he expired. Alas that his family or companions was nowhere near so honorable. Dueling was once common in Talingarde before the House of Darius came to power. The House of Barca all but encouraged duels of honor. Now, dueling of any sort is punished severely. Dueling to the death is a sure way to be sent to Branderscar Prison.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You gain a +2 bonus on disarm checks and feint checks

Extortion
You have defrauded money from someone by holding information of their wrongdoing over their heads. To end up in Branderscar, this was no minor act of merely threatening to expose someone. Instead you ave attempted extortion against someone of great prominence and for exorbitant stakes.

Punishment: Life at hard labor in the salt mines

Benefit: You receive a +2 trait bonus to Intimidate checks, and Intimidate is always a class skill for you.

Forgery
You have forged documents issued either by the crown or by the Church of Mitra. Alas, that your forgery while competent was not entirely undetectable. To be sent to Branderscar, this was no minor finagling of paperwork. This forged document could have cost lives, undermined the reputation of the Church or endangered the security of the realm.

Punishment: Life at hard labor in the salt mines

Benefit: You gain a +3 trait bonus to Linguistics skill checks to commit forgery and Linguistics is always a class skill for you.

Fraud
You tried to bilk someone out of their cash. To end up in Brandescar Prison, this was no petty con job or penny ante racket. Instead, you brazenly tried to defraud someone important of a huge sum of money. And it almost worked too!

Punishment: Life at hard labor in the salt mines

Benefit: You receive a +2 trait bonus to Bluff checks and Bluff is always a class kill for you.

Grave Robbery
It is forbidden by sacred law to dishonor a corpse after it is been sealed in its tomb by a clergy of the Mitran faith. Some may not honor this ban: necromancers, golem crafters, self-styled scientists, and alchemists delving into the forbidden secrets of life and death. These ghouls can expect no mercy from the Talirean Magistrates. And by sending you to Branderscar Prison, you have received none.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You receive a +2 trait bonus to resist disease.

Heresy
You have denied the supremacy of Mitra and been condemned for it. For this to be a crime, you were not content to keep your heresy to yourself. You tried to sway others. Likely you were captured by the famed witch hunter Sir Balin of Karfeld. The last thing he said to you was: “Mitra may forgive you yet for your lies. Talingarde will not.” If only you could get a chance at revenge!

Punishment: Death by burning.

Benefit: You receive a +2 trait bonus to Knowledge (religion) checks and Knowledge (religion) is always a class skill for you.

High Theft
You had a foolproof plan to steal some great treasure. Alas, the scheme had a fatal flaw and went horribly awry. To be sent to Branderscar prison, this was no ordinary robbery attempt. You tried to steal something of great value or religious significance.

Punishment: Life at hard labor in the salt mines

Benefit: You receive a +1 trait bonus to Stealth checks.

High Treason
You have willfully worked to bring down the current Monarch of Talingarde -- the beloved King Markadian V called the Brave of House Darius. To be successfully tried for High Treason you have done more than merely dislike the king, you did something tangible to undermine his rule. Alas, that you failed at your plot and are now headed to Branderscar Prison. Treason is the only crime that is still punished by the gruesome ritual of being drawn and quartered. Your stay at Branderscar will be brief.

Punishment: Death by drawing and quartering

Benefit: You receive a +1 trait bonus to Diplomacy checks.

Kidnapping
You have abducted someone perhaps to ransom them or do unspeakable things to them. Unfortunately, you were caught and your victim was rescued (if they weren’t rescued -- you would be guilty of murder instead). To be sent to Branderscar Prison, you must have abducted someone of great importance or in a particularly gruesome manner.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You receive a +1 trait bonus to both Disarm and Grapple attempts.

Murder
You have killed without just cause and been condemned for it. To be sent to Branderscar Prison, this was no typical killing but a particularly savage and unforgiveable act. You may also have killed someone with powerful friends. Note: You are not allowed to have killed someone in the royal family of Talingarde. You may have tried (his would instead be High Treason -- see above) but ultimately they are too well protected.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You deal 1 additional point of damage when flanking a foe. This additional damage is a trait bonus.

Piracy
You have been caught in the act of piracy on the high seas. This is a rare crime these days since Markadian I called the Victorious burned the last major pirate fleet to threaten these isles. Still the crime is punished harshly. Likely you are the sole survivor of your ship.

Punishment: Death by hanging

Benefit: You may select either Bluff or Intimidate. The selected skill receives a +1 trait bonus and is always a class skill for you.

Sedition
You have attempted to covertly stir up rebellion against your rightful sovereign. This differs from high treason in that you attempted to convince others to make war against Talingarde instead of taking direct action yourself. A subtle difference to be sure. But it is the difference between receiving the swift justice of the axe instead of the slow suffering upon the rack.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You receive a +1 trait bonus to Bluff checks and Bluff is always a class skill for you. Further if you ever take the Leadership feat, you gain a +1 trait bonus to your Leadership score.

Slave-Taking
Slavery is illegal in Talingarde and a very rare crime. Still, once in a great while, slavers from the mainland will foolishly make an incursion into Talirean protected territories. When they are captured alive they are always made an example of.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You receive a +2 trait bonus to attacks inflicting nonleathal damage.

Slave Trading
Slavery is legal in other parts of the world and it can be tempting to the most decadent of Talingarde’s nobility to acquire a “souvenir” when traveling abroad or to purchase the object of their desire from a less reputable merchant. However you ended up trading slaves in Talingarde, you were caught red handed and now you will lose more than simply your freedom.

Punishment: Death by beheading

Benefit: You receive one bonus skill point per level that must be spent on the Appraise skill. The Appraise skill is always a class skill for you.

@FairyGM: Mitra in the base AP was a triple-aspected good god, so maybe having a triune of gods representing the three good alignments (Maybe Iomedae, Sarenrae, and Desna?) would be appropariate for the 'Talingarde godhead'? Just a stray thought.

Last time I attempted to make a tank like this was prob 15 years ago.

Though I have changed it up this time. He will actually be able to do some damage

Previous attempt could at most do 1d8+3 excluding buffs

:P

I'll leave a post here to follow along, I'd be interested in either suggested campaign. The PbP's I was in are all a bit dead it seems so looking to pick up probably one more game.

And hello to many familiar faces that also expressed interest in this thread! :-)

Welcome Shadow! And it seems the GM decided on WotW Mythic

The GM has, in just under a month, amended their fate too!
They are in a campaign now!

Small world, I'm in that one as well.

Not had much luck with way of the wicked, last campaign I was in failed before we got to lvl 2. Ah well guess that's par for the course in PbP games.

So I made the recruitment for my way of the Wicked campaign. Here's the link

Scarab Sages

I'd love to try DARK SUN.

Are you familiar with some of the other 3rd-party updates that have been made for it?
