Solarian Class Discussion

Scarab Sages

The solarion ONLY gets to legendary with their Solar weapon at 19? Not their Solar flare? Like, why? They are already delaying legendary until 19 (operatives, gunslingers, and fighters get it at 13) and they are ONLY legendary with their weapon.

Like, maybe I'm not crunching the numbers here, but Soldiers get to legendary in class DCs AND armor, and SOlarians only get to legendary in their one sword? Seems . . . a bit incongrous.

It's just their feature that's similar to what like Barbarian or Rogue or other martials that don't start out at Expert get at 19 - a capstone that is unique to them in some way, in the case of Solarian, the Solar Weapon (arguably because its the 'iconic' thing ala a Jedi's lightsaber.)

It just seems like they end up being worse melee combatants than a striker operative. Those guys get legendary in their weapons at 13, do as much if not more damage with their aim+high accuracy, and get a ranged reactive strike (hair trigger) at 2, that also works with their melee weapons because of how striker works. Just run in with a knife and a pistol and be a better Solarian than the Solarian.

Every other class that gets to legendary with weapons gets it at 13 for an entire class of weapons (2 classes for the gunslinger), but Solarian is one specific weapon at 19.

One specific subset of Operative has that progression - and I think there's some discussion going on about Strikers anyhow. Plus, they give up that progression for martial guns in exchange in only one type of melee weapons. Solarians get to do cool things with making their own weapons with traits and stuff - like, a one-handed reach weapon, ect.

But, also, those classes all have Fighter progression - and the Solarian is more like the Barbarian or Ranger and other martials, and instead have other tools in their toolkit. Like, one common idea between Fighter and Gunslinger is that that progression is kind of their main feature - and Operative, too, largely, plus I know there's discussion about if Operative has too much.

I don't think the answer is to give them Fighter progression, and the Operative doesn't have the same tools as a Solarian in terms of raw melee things or messing around with enemies in the same way.

The thing is, barbarians get legendary in fortitude, rangers in reflex. Most classes get to legendary in something broad. A save, unarmored defense, armored defense, weapons or whatnot. Solarian kinda feel cheated this way.

If it was legendary at their weapon and their solar flare, and it came online at, say, 17, I think I’d be fine. They don’t need fighter progression. It just feels that they are behind a bit. And I feel legendary ONLY in their solar weapon at 19 is kinda not great, and pidgeonholes them.

I really don't think that feature ought to exist. It's placed far too late in the class's progression for the class to feel like a true "legendary weapon" class like the Fighter, but its very existence means that a 19th-20th level Solarian is effectively going to be a Fighter with lots of added superpowers. In general, a lot of SF2e classes have very messy class features and progression, especially at higher levels, and I think this is one of many features that needs another look at.

I hate disjointed progression in PF2 and it's not any better here. Solarion should get Legendary at the normal level or not at all. Having an enhanced progression but only at very certain levels is just an albatross around the class and makes balancing it more confusing.

I think the author of this class just forgot that the solar shot and weapon aren't mechanically the same when writing some things. The flare not benefiting from weapon potency crystals to keep up on accuracy kills it at higher levels, but then the auto dice scaling makes striking crystals verboten, so I don't know what they think they're doing here. Some of the orbital crystals do add special solar shot effects, but not to hit or damage dice.
