OKAY, SO, not engaging with any trolls in thread: it'd be easy enough to have the assumption "people who are able to go about adventuring, have gotten their Space Driver's License, or at least they've watched enough movies about it that they're able to fake it well enough for Being A Hero to compensate for their lack of actual skill".
And if someone's from a backwater planet, then the other party members were able to teach them enough.
Honestly, if you're trying hard enough, you can find reasons why ANYTHING shouldn't be a thing characters aren't able to do; but the converse is likewise true, where you can find reasons why a character IS in fact able to do pretty much any given thing, so long as you try hard enough. "I can give reasons why it does/doesn't make sense for a character to be able to do XYZ" is therefore completely meaningless, in practical terms.
The more important question, is SHOULD a character be able to do XYZ, like for gameplay purposes; and once you've made that decision, then you can figure out ways for it to make sense in-'verse.

I do want to state that I by no means think that SF2e should get rid of Piloting. I just don't like the way it was treated in SF1e and would appreciate it seeing more love and better integration as a whole. Auto progression isn't the only way to do that, it's probably not even the best way, but I think it's at least a step in the right direction.
