Fellas is it racist to play a half-elf in D&D?

But they're keeping Tieflings, which are, by definition, at least partially of devil heritage.

Which implies they're just reacting to the word "half".

So Tanis, Elrond, half of VoxMachina

all need to go away now?

I think they started with "half-orcs are a racist concept" and said, let's get rid of the other half, too.

since 4e, tieflings are a result of a ritual, not sex.

I'm not going to have an argument on whether Tiefling is a heritable trait in D&D 5e. You can go read page 42 in the players handbook for a refresher if you need to.

Guess they aren't aware that actual hybrids exist and the game can't support Lygers or Mules. And for that matter Dark Sun can't have Muls.

Maybe to be safe they should exclude centaurs, half dragons, and any other chimeric creatures. Bye-bye owlbear.

Not to mention all the biracial people who exist in the Real World.

Uh far as I know they have just done what pathfinder did? (Ie they integrated them in the human entry.)

Ok so from what I understand they aren't removed from the game but they aren't given their own Entry. The system will have rules for Mixed-Origins, and from the sound of it might even be stepping it beyond Half-Human and half-whatever.

So to play a Half-Elf you would pick Human or Elf as your origin to define how you were raised and then swap in some traits from the other side to cover the mixed side of your heritage.

That I'm fine with

(although justifying it by claiming the old races were "Inherently Racist" is still dumb)

Radiant Oath

If they are separating race and culture that is a good step.

Leon Aquila, my PHB was made of such s###y material that I've lost that page, but I did find this.

Quote:

The definition of the tiefling remained the same until they became available as core races in the 4tth Edition. At that time, their history was altered slightly and more defined. It also meant there was a lot of new information that could be used to help players create new tiefling characters. In addition to the history of the race, new information included details about tiefling horns, names, traits, alignments, and how they were treated by the general public.

The origin store of the tiefling is generally the same between the 4th and 5th Edition of DnD. The tiefling were no longer considered a mixed-breed race despite having physical characteristics of humans and fiends. Instead, the tiefling ancestors made bargains with various devils to gain certain abilities and to increase their overall power. These bargains affected their bloodlines and their appearance. The particular devil that the ancestor made a pact with also affects the character's sub-race.

Tieflngs aren't a result of breeding between fiends and humans, but a ritual. They do, however breed true, like Barry Allen's powers.

It sounds like half elves and half orcs etc won't be in any products though as characters either. Sure, you COULD make one still, but if they don't exist in any of the game worlds anymore, that's a problem.
