Scarab beetle swarms. They look great, but they're a discontinued product :(
Bummer. I did get mine in a bargin bin at my local gaming store for $1. I had debated getting them for several months because I hadn't seen ang adventures where thay would come into play. Then The Ederron adventure came out and I said "snag." Still, I'd like to get two more so that I can have a full 10x10 mass.
I think the game store also had mad slasher minis for $.75. I lucked out with a store that opens several D&D mini packs and sells them as singles. Still, what is the Mad Slasher doing with the beetles?

Playing Dragonchess, obviously. Everyone else in Diamond Lake does. :)
Snort. I haven't gotten that far. As you can tell by my questions post, I'm only to area 23 in the adventure.
It just seems that the slasher would have been eaten or something if it had been living with the beetles to the degree that it erupts from the floor with them. The fact that it avoids them from that point on is what is weird to me. Maybe it feeds off them and has been living in the elevator. I don't have the Mini's handbook, so I don't have the details on the beast.

As a young child growing up in the coastal woodlands in Northern California (where there's not a lot to do), I enjoyed lifting up old boards or rocks on the ground to find out what kind of critters lived underneath. On a good day, you'd find ants, a scorpion, potato bugs, a few centipedes, crickets, some salamanders, and maybe even a blue-tailed skink or an aligator lizard. Once, I hit the jackpot and found a rubber boa (which is more or less the only boa constrictor indiginous to North America).
My point is that all these critters were more or less living in harmony with each other. I never once found them trying to eat each other. And often, exposing their world to sunlight sent them all scuttling after me in a mad riot of indignation (at which point I would typically flee).
So I don't think there's a problem at all with the acid beetles and the mad slasher cohabitating. They're used to each other, and they probably taste bad to each other, and when the PCs come along and lift the lid on their home, it'd be easy to mistake their frenzy and indignation for a coordinated defense of their shared lair when in fact it's just a bunch of creepy crawlies all riled up and angry and stuff.

Klamath's pretty impressive too. My old stomping grounds are the sprawling metropolis of Point Arena. Population 450 or something like that.

Ok, I'll buy that.

Since I'm still waiting for my copy, and since it will take me a while to collect most of my mini's, does anyone have a link or list of what mini's we'll need (the paizo store link, I suppose) but *how many* of them we'll need?
That information might be helpful for upcoming issues as well. I've got a lot of browsing/cajoling/E-bay™-ing to do. :)

if you can find the old pos game "mageknight" pieces... look for a scalesworn spectre.
http://www.insaneimages.com/pics/scaleswornspectre.gif
This is the way it looks from WK. I've painted a couple up to resemble the wind warriors (threw silver on them... I'll try and get a picture of that up when I get a chance).
To me they seem to be a really close match to what a wind warrior would look like... they even have "wind" trailing off them. The helmet is almost identical to the illustration.
As a bonus - WK blew it soooo bad with this game you can get these for around 50 cents a piece! you just need to rip em off the stupid clicky base and glue it on a real base.

I'm not sure if it would be a copywrite problem with me sharing them, but I had some spare time and decided to make tokens for everything. Basically I took pictures from the DMG, Dungeon Magazine, and a few odd sources (photo's from the internet of a terra-cotta warrior and a Bombardiar beetle) and resized them so tehy fit the correct size squares and such. I printed mine in color on card stock (paper is too hard to pick up and move).
I haven't gotten part 2 in the mail yet, so I haven't added the creatures from it yet except what I found on the online supplement, but it's cheaper and easier than carting around a ton of minis.
(Yah, I'm a bit anal, I also drew out all the maps in advance on 1" grid paper)

Oooo... I'd be very interested. Let me know if you can't post 'em and I'll put up my email addy.
I went looking for swarm images for the beetles... didn't find any good beetle pictures, but I did find stock photographs of bee swarms. Ugh, creepy. I'd post a link, but, yeah, stock photographs... Google Images for "bug swarm" should work.
Amusingly, one of the top hits for "Beetle swarm" was Reaper.
And I'm definitely going to use the Mummy for imagery of that swarm. It's just so perfect.

On a related note: anyone know of a good site that has dungeon tiles, accessories (dungeon dressing), & monster counters that could be used in AoW?
I've found these so far: http://www.dungeoneering.net/downloads.php5?page=tiles
My original plan was to draw out all the maps on clear acetone sheets placed over a battlemat, but I've decided to print out tiles & attach them to the acetone w/ double-sided tape instead.
So far, i've finished the shower room in the Whispering Cairn, & am now working on the 1st floor of the observatory.

If it causes a problem I'll take it down, but here are my tokens so far. I had to drop the resolution a bit (4 meg is a bit silly) so it now fits a nice 500k. Whenever I get my 125 issue I'll add more.
I went looking for swarm images for the beetles... didn't find any good beetle pictures...
I took the swarm pictures from Swamp Strider Swarm (Monster Manual III art gallery).

No attachment :/
Go ahead and email 'em to abernat (at) gmail.com. Probably easier that way.
Or am I just missing something obvious? BTW, I have 125 and can make a monster list for you if you'd like.
Oops, did I maybe just forget to put the link or did they delete it. Here it is again, just ignore the spaces. I'll go ahead and mail it to you too.

Cool.
I actually just found a Female Gnoll Cleric with a Flail and shield That I will be using for one on the PCs in my game, who was a human female cleric that got reincarnated as a Female Gnoll Cleric, oh, and she uses a flail and shield. Makes me wonder if someone at reaper is reading my campaign journal...

What about minis for the Three Faces of Evil?
Here's what I'm going to use, so far, for The Whispering Cairn
3 Wolves: Wolf (WotC Harbringer), 2x Timber Wolf (WotC Deathknell)
Mad Slasher: Mad Slasher (WotC Aberrations)
Elementals: Medium Earth Elemental (WotC Archfiends), Medium Water Elemental (WotC Dragoneye) - yeah, so they're too big...
Medium Animated Statue: Village Priest (WotC Angelfire) - I didn't feel like buying something new
Ulavant, Ghoul: Ghast (WotC Giants of Legend)
Grick: Grick (WotC Giants of Legend)
Alastor Land: Cursed Spirit (WotC Archfiends)
Wind Warriors: Sword of Glory (Wotc Giants of Legend)
Owlbear: Celestial Black Bear (WotC Aberrations)
Kullen: Skullsplitter (WotC Aberrations)
Rastophan: Kerwyn, Human Rogue (WotC Dragoneye)
Todrik: City Guard (WotC Giants of Legend)
Merovinn Bask: Evoker's Apprentice (WotC Harbringer)
Filge: Grim Necromancer (WotC Deathknell)
Troglodyte Zombie: Troglodyte (WotC Dragoneye)
Bugbear Zombie: Bugbear Footpad (WotC Giants of Legend)
Gertia Land: Warrior Skeleton (WotC Archfiends)
Other than that, I'll have to buy or make stuff. I may use the 002016d : Evil Eye Lord - Eye Sprue for the Lurking Strangler and I'll probably use Reaper's Scarab Swarms and the giant Scarab Beetle for the Acid Beetle Swarms and the big Bombadier. I'll most likely buy Reaper familiar packs for the owl and weasel familiars. I can use the Fiendish Dire Weasel from Aberrations if need be. I'm at a loss for the crossbow armed skeletons (Reaper?) and zombies (though I can certainly borrow plenty from a good friend's Warhammer army). I'll probably build the Sarcophagus or just settle on that Reaper one.
For Three Faces of Evil, I've settled on the following:
3 Tiefling Guards: anything with longbows or greataxes. If they look evil and humanoid, great. I've got well over 100 D&D Miniatures, so this shouldn't be hard.
2 Troglodyte Zombies: the same trogs from above (lucky me - I have two)
Grimlock Kennel Master: Grimlock (WotC Dragoneye)
2 Krenshars: the timber wolves listed above
I have the Kenku Sneak from Deathknell, but armed like that and having only one... Hmm. I could use a second Fiendish Dire Weasel for the Dire Weasels. But, the large monstrous centipede, dire ape and dire boar? Hmm. What about all those heavily armed Grimlocks?!?! Orcs?
Waa |
Yeah, Savage Orcs from WotC Deathknell (57/60 c), much more impressive than the grimlock "weaklings" from WotC Dragoneye -
and easier to get.
Is there any sort of official "in production, not in production" list for the D&D minis? Aside from Harbringer and Archfiends, which sets are no longer being made? It seems like with the release of Angelfire, it's everything up to Aberrations. Maybe even including Aberrations... Which, obviously, is a real shame. How am I supposed to get an Umber Hulk? Or Drizz't? Or some of the dragons? It's not fair, I say!
But at least I managed to get two Bulettes and a Huge Red Dragon!!!

Giants of Legend is now factory retired I believe. Umber Hulk- I don't even want to discuss how much I paid for one of those as a single! Displacer beasts and other singles from the older sets are being sold for huge amounts of money! I don't even know how many Giants of Legend I bought and I still had to purchase both dragons as singles.. Those %$@# cloud giants made me want to scream! I bought 24 sets of Angelfire booster packs and I couldn't get some of the minis I wanted out of that list. Not to mention a Blackscale Lizardfolk having no tail!!
Anyways- trying to get rid of the steaming anger... The timber wolf minis from Deathknell worked out awfully nice for Whispering Cairn. I'll be using quasit minis from GOL for the elementals I think. For the beetles and swarms I'm trying to acquire some Reaper minis. For the statue I think I'll use the Stonechild mini.. For the Wind Warriors I bought two Gloom Wraiths from Reaper. That's all I have so far.

All of them except the most recent, and possibly the starters of Aberrations are no longer being made. Heck, I don't even know if Angelfire is still being made. Probably, but not for much longer.
That's a different thing to "we have them in stock", because distributors and stores often build up a large cache of them that they dribble out to us.
Cheers,
Merric

I'd love to use D&D miniatures when the creatures they represent are present, but the cost of buying the "Rare" figures, which tend to be the creatures that actually appear in adventures, is cost prohibitive to all but those with large budgets. Blood Hulks, Cat folk, Bullywug Thugs, Wood Wodes? When was the last time any of those showed up in an adventure.
I guess the minis are actually for the mini game though, where players will actually use strange lame creatures that WoTC seems to pump into production by the millions.
I receintly went through the list of all the plastic D&D minis made to date, of the136 that I’d be interested in using in my game, 36 are “Common”, 46 are “Uncommon”, and 54 are “Rare”.
Barghest, Displacer Beast, Large Fire Elemental, Large Earth Elemental, Trolls, UmberHulks, Salamanders, Draggins of any size or color, Frigg’n Carrion Crawlers, Bone, Bearded, Barbed and Chain Devils, Slaads, Demons of all sorts, Beholder, Wyvern, Chull, Bright Naga, Giants of all sorts. Those are what will aid my game, but at the inflated resale prices they are way out of my budget. Hmmm a single mini, or a hardback source book. Heck you can subscribe to DUNGEON for a year for the price some of these minis are being scalped at.
I’ll admit, that I peck through the common singles when I find them and have picked up some Kobolds, Orcs (even though I have hundreds of them already). I was pleased to see the following as commons, and thus affordable as singles, although people I know also have been stuck with dozens of the same figure. Grimlock, Troglodyte, Kobolds (Which are hard to find elsewhere, although Reaper has a set of 5, and Hackmaster has a four pack), Grick (these things show up everywhere and are what a common mini should be), I was also glad to see some of the summoned creatures as commons, Dire Badgers, Black Bears and Weasles, but who needs more than 1d4+1 of these? I know a guy that ended up with 27 Killer frogs. I’ve never seen more than like 12 in a single encounter. Having things like Orcs, Bugbears, Hobgoblins, Gnolls and Goblins as common minis makes sense.
As a DM, I want the copy righted D&D monsters that I can’t get anywhere else. I could care less about the PC figures.
Erik Mona, In your game, do you have full access to all the correct D&D miniatures since you are a bit closer to the source?
I’d love to be able to run a game and not have to say “well the orange is a beholder, because I can’t afford to buy a beholder figure for $30+”.
The few times I’ve been able to run a session and not had to substitute mini’s for things that they were not have been priceless. The look on players faces when they see their foe and know it is a Blue Slaad from the mini, and don’t have to ask which dice is representing the Orc Shaman. Man, those are the things that make DMing great.
D&D minis should be sold by size. With the Huge Minis running no more than $10
But I must always remind my self. D&D miniatures are not gaming airs, but pieces for the D&D miniatures game, and the ability to use them as gaming aids is purely coincidental.
So, I will keep buying the high quality Reaper miniatures that I can actually see before I pay my hard earned money for them, and I will keep a tomato or orange in the fridge incase the characters in my game encounter a Beholder.

The biggest flaw in the D&D Miniatures execution was discontinuing older products. By doing so, coupled with the fact they they're referred to as "collectible," allows internet retailers, eBay sellers, and others to hike up prices to astronomical values for no good reason. None. At all.
Well, that and the common minis make up the smallest number of figures in any set. Yeah, that makes sense. How about make the rare figures really rare by having, say, 5 or 6 out of 60 be rare. Make like 20-25 of the figures common.
And how about themed sets? Oh, sure, they're "themed" already. I mean by areas/terrain or by monster type. Why not sell Undead Booster Packs so you can amass skeletons and zombies. Or lizard folk packs with kobolds, troglodytes, lizardmen, etc. Vermin and Animals? That'd be awesome.

Dude I'm right there with you.
An undead pack could still be random, and contain a variety of ghouls, skeletal monsters, zombies, skeletons, mummy's, vampires, necromancers, ghosts and the like. I know there are already several large undead figures out there, throw one or two of them randomly inot each undead pack.
I'd be all for Fighter packs, or just PC packs. A Drow Pack maybe with a spider or two would be easy.
Hell, themeb packs could be sold as Game ready with X points of figures inside. Get your Gnoll Warband, or Village Millitia force and fight straight out of the box.
Or maybe a summoned creatures pack.
At least buying an Orc pack I know I'm not going to get stuck with a catfolk...or 17 catfolk...

Which really irritates the living h outta me!! Thanks for your thoughts guys. I totally agree with you. I just bought 2 acid beetles and a scarab swarm from Reaper for the Lair of the Laborers. I just wish I had the time and skill to paint all my Reaps. If WOTC allowed Reaper to put out "offical" D&D minis, I would support Reaper all the way and forsake WOTC's mini-line.
