If pointing out that “the new official Pathfinder digital service isn’t made by Paizo and isn’t free is something unfortunate and another descent into the banal entreaties of advertdismalism/capitalism” and that ensuring that the official digital service requires yet more fiscal outlay is grandiose pontificating then I’m glad I was able to not like it in the first place. Apologies. Exeunt stage…Left.

This seems twofold silly to me.

Firstly, because it's blindingly obvious that Paizo does not possess the skillset or resources to make something like this in-house.

And secondly, because there is already a free official digital resource for the Pathfinder rules - Archive of Nethys - so why would Paizo make another? They have to keep the lights on somehow.

There is something I would like clarified, as it stands now the FAQ heavily implies that you lose access to the free pdf if you delete your nexus account as it was not "purchased directly from paizo" but given freely by nexus.

I don't think it implies as the question for there digital content the pdf is provided by Paizo not Demiplane. It is up to Paizo not Demiplane what would happen to the pdf.

I can confirm beyond any doubt that you would not lose any access to a PDF granted as part of a Pathfinder Nexus purchase (unless that access is somehow removed by Paizo).

I'll also share, now that the first part of the Game Compendium is live in Early Access, the game mechanics contained therein are freely accessible, just as Pathfinder game mechanics are free anywhere else on the internet.

Pathfinder Nexus follows the same model that all official partners follow, in that game mechanics are available for free, and other features (like upcoming character management) have purchase options.

More to come as Early Access progresses - thanks!

I’d be very interested in this service if I were just getting started with 2E so my initial book purchases were “compatible,” but I’m a day-one whole-line subscriber to 2E, so if I were going to jump into this, at least the way I understand the pricing, I have to either drop several hundred dollars at once to be able to use content I’ve already purchased or I’d be buying into a hobbled system. Neither of those appeals to me.

I can only assume I’m not the target market, because if I am and this is how they’re targeting me it’s a big miss. On the other hand, I’m not sure I understand how wise it is to not target folks who are deeply invested in the game your product supports.

In either event, unless I totally misunderstand the pricing structure or, in the alternative, some other pricing structure appears, I’ll be staying away from this service, and every product that I purchase outside this service will push me farther away. That said, I wish them luck.,

One thing to remember is that it is not official launch. With the compendium being free it even clear then it already was that we are paying for features and not all of them are out yet. And yes at this stage you would have to pay for the whole book but later you can just buy parts.

For I would check out the features through the free primer see how you like there tooltips and the character sheet when they get that up and running. Decided passed on that if it worth investing in and by that point you should be able to buy parts individually and can just get what you need at that moment.

Character sheets have always been somewhat lacking and in need of a unified digital platform.

Pathbuilder and the Foundry system come the closest so far, but neither is quite there yet IMHO.

Nexus could be that platform if they want to be and put effort on it, but its also the only portion which you can't yet test.

So I'll reserve judgement for now.

For my online games Foundry does an excellent job of keeping track of all stuff but I do think something is lacking for my IRL games. The physical character sheets are quite encumbersome (erasing everything and fill in tons of values every single level...) and I haven't found an awesome digital option yet.

If Nexus made it easy to have a digital character sheet on a good mobile (phone not pad) interface that is shareable with the GM in an easy way that would be incredible for my use case personally.

I mean, I get that people don't want to pay for stuff twice. Absolutely. But coding in all those books and doing the work costs money, they can't just give that away for free, it is a service.

Add in that how do you PROVE you bought the book? I mean if you got it directly from Paizo, that is easy. What about people that just bought the book from a LGS, or Amazon?

I absolutely think some kind of discount when it launches for people to catch up with already purchased stuff would be a good idea, but have to make the economics of it work too. Afraid I don't know the right answer here.

I’d be happy to pay for that service, maybe in the form of an on-going subscription, but even then I imagine it would cost less than would purchasing every book twice. From my understanding, under the proposed pricing scheme, to get full functionality out of this software I’d not only have to drop several hundred dollars to unlock access to the material from the literally dozens of PF2 books I’ve already bought, but would also have to double purchase every book going forward.

There’s an AWFUL lot of middle ground between double purchasing dozens of books I already have and every book going forward and “just give that away for free.” If none of that middle ground is economically viable, then I’m just not interested. If enough people are willing to pay the price they’re asking, then this should do fine, and I no problem with that.

The issue isn’t proving that I’ve bought the books, because whether I’ve bought the books makes no difference at all to Demiplane because that money went to Paizo, not Demiplane. It makes a difference to me in terms of how much I’m willing to pay to use the information in the books.

Relevant info from the Demiplane FAQs:
---
Can I access Pathfinder Nexus on mobile or tablet?

Yes! Pathfinder Nexus will be available to use on desktop, tablet, and mobile browser screens, and native mobile app support will be introduced at a later date.

If I purchase several books at once, is there a discount?

A variety of product bundles will be made available over time, including an Ultimate Bundle that includes all Pathfinder official content, as well as bundles by book type - Rulebooks, Lost Omens, and Adventures. These bundles will be introduced later in the Early Access phase. Any money spent on pre-orders during Early Access will be credited to future bundle purchases once they are available.
----
I believe there are plans to allow for purchasing parts of books, aka specific content one needs for one's character, so as to keep the cost down, but I don't see that in the FAQs.

Thanks for the info!

I'll definitely have to judge it more closely when it is released or Early Access gets more meaty, but it does sound intriguing for now.

Especially if it's easy to just buy a specific class or something when you need it for a campaign.

I'll never be interested in this product. I own every PF2E book released and I'm not repurchasing or paying additional money to access this content, use their reader, video/chat alternative to discord, or a character builder. I have all of these things and more most of which didn't cost me anything. I've heard it said that it will be nice to have everything integrated into one platform but I don't feel like things are fragmented, to begin with. Sure they're on separate platforms but having books in one place, characters in another, and voice/chat elsewhere isn't inconvenient when I can bring everything I need together when and where I want. I wish Demiplane nothing but the best but I can't conceptualize anything they offer now or in the future being of interest to me.

I think we all know different products appeal to different people. D&D Beyond is a popular option and Pathfinder players have clearly been calling for more digital options. I am excited to see how this platform brings new players to the game, makes character creation easier, expands online play, connects people looking for games, makes more elegant live-play streams, and creates a hub for multiple ttrpgs. Many Pathfinders and Starfinders play more than one ttrpg and Demiplane will be a good second home for them.

That said, with Hero Lab, VTTs, Archives of Nethys, and OGL/CUP community tools, like PF2easy and Pathbuilder, we are creating vibrant Pathfinder and Starfinder communities with an abundance of price-points and levels of quality.

I'm super excited about the possibility of Nexus. Using dnd beyond and Avare discord bot has been my favorite way of playing 5e online. I'd love a similar setup to that. Current my group(s), we have a weird setup, uses foundry, which is great for a vtt, but for theatre or the mind type stuff nothing really exists like our 5e setup for pf2.

Do we know when it's going to be released?

Malgwyn wrote:

They not giving a specific date because things can change but they are well into making the character creator and expect to show off some of it soon.

Ok thanks for the info.

I bought the basic searchable Core and Bestiary and haven't messed around with it that much. Since the functionality isn't all there yet.
I'm excited about the prospect of the character creator (if it's good) to be sort of a Hero Labby mistake-catcher.
The camera and mic and chat are super cool. Except.. if I'm playing online to need those, I'm'a need a digital map too. I don't know yet about using Fantasy Grounds and Nexus.
I imagine we'll be using it more in person.
And I'd be right out on a subscription. Absolutely not. If I buy it, I own it.
