I have... a lot of thoughts. I feel scared to do this (it feels weird to make a thread just for me to dump out thoughts, but that seems to be a tradition in this section of the forums, so what the heck). I also just kind of need to express some things, and don't want to dump some of them in the LGBT community thread or in someone else's thread out of anxiety about bringing the mood down or monopolizing the energy of those spaces.

Just all I really want to say right now is.... I am so very tired. The recent... stuff... has been very draining, but I feel like I can step back because I generally think of myself as able to articulate things well (I don't know if I actually do it well, but people in my life often tell me that I do), and because of that I feel a responsibility to speak up about things, because I know how hard it is as an LGBT person (especially a trans person) to speak up, so when something happens I want to make sure that there are enough voices speaking up, because for each trans person speaking up there are probably 5 others who don't have the energy or are too afraid. I know it makes a difference to me when other trans people (and allies of trans people) speak up, so I want to hopefully do that too when I can.

So ummm, thanks for reading my rant.

I also make a lot of homebrew content, and might stick some of it in here at some point (and maybe links to various miniature painting and conversion stuff I do at some point in case people are interested). I also often have a lot of thoughts about the hobby, which I might post in here from time to time.

People do weird question threads on these forums, it feels weird for me to say this (as it feels immodest) but I am happy to (and would probably enjoy) answer if people want to ask random questions and stuff.

random questions, eh?

What percentage of minis that you've bought have you actually painted?

(and you can also take this as indication that you're not just posting into the void :))

Thank you! and that question is... well scary (but good scary).

Umm, if I went by total minis I have ever purchased (about 6 years ago after a bunch of big life changes happened, I actually threw a ridiculous amount of warhammer minis into the trash because I wasn't doing the hobby anymore and had too much stuff, which I deeply regret because I later realized I wanted to go back to painting minis and could use the warhammer stuff for D&D/Pathfinder) I think maybe pretty low - somewhere in the 5% range.

Based on just the minis I still have, I am proud to say that at the rate I have been painting the last two years, I am currently approaching around 35% of my collection being painted. I expect it to look more like 45-50% around January.

Looking at the numbers... I am actually very impressed with myself. I never thought I would ever get past maybe 25% of my minis being painted. I know a lot of people never do.

A thread for posting random stuff or inane questions?!!

This is going to get weird!

Or not, it's a Friday after all.

I do consider myself a mother to all cats I meet, and birds can be considered a kind of cat, so yes.

That is, assuming that birds are real and not surveillance drones disguised as birds.

I don't have even the least bit of foggy knowledge of who Steve Holt is. However, your declaration, while not making me give a fig about him, has lifted my spirits immensely. I will now drink some Mtn. Dew.

My top three are;

1 - Annihilation - It is beautiful and creepy and existential and weird and is the most amazing piece of sci-fi I have seen,
2 - Thin Red Line - Somehow combines the horror of war with beautiful poetry and music. If you like war movies, I highly recommend this.
3 - King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - it's not in the high art category of the first two, but I am so starved for good fantasy movies, and this movie is so fun that I have watched it like 10 times in the 2 years I have been aware of it. It also has a great soundtrack and the best montages I have seen in film.

Honourable mentions go to the crop of really intelligent sci-fi movies from the last few years (Arrival, Interstellar, the Martian), any movie by Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), and anything from studio ghibli.

I am always happy to lift people's spirits! Also, isn't it crazy that you can get frozen mountain dew at KFC? When I first saw it I thought I had lapsed into a weird alternate universe.

I am super into movies, so have some thoughts;

1 - I reeeallly crave more fantasy movies that are really well made and written. Sci-fi has had its maturation/renaissance with stuff like Annihilation, Arrival, Interstellar, and so on, and Horror has had it with Jordan Peele movies and other stuff like Don't Breathe and Hereditary.

Part of this is those genres being going beyond just spectacle and being willing to tackle complex metaphors and social issues (though sci-fi admittedly had some really intelligent gems way back when with stuff like Space Odyssey).

Fantasy movies.... well they largely haven't had that yet. They are generally either big budget adaptations (chronicles of narnia, lord of the rings, hellboy) or cheesy low budget stuff (Dragonheart, Mythica, etc). I want the fantasy equivalent of Interstellar that makes me cry while also being really intelligent, or the fantasy equivalent of Django Unchained where it is really fun, funny, and savagely takes down racism. All the other genres get to be really intelligent and really well made and also look really good at the same time, it's time for fantasy to have this.

I think the main way to get there is to start having more fantasy movies that aren't just adaptations of book trilogies. Get some auteur style directors making clever stuff in the genre, and some scripts based very loosely on weird stand-alone novels (this is where annihilation came from).

2 - I really, really liked the concept of the worldbuilding of Bright... just - a version that isn't terrible in every way? I was really intrigued by seeing elves and orcs and centaurs in a modern setting and what that world looks like. The problem was the whole thing was a really, really badly mishandled metaphor about race (seeing Will Smith playing as a cop saying "fairy lives don't matter" made me feel ill). I like it when a movie uses metaphors to tackle social issues, it just has to be done well and not do it in a gross way. I don't want a sequel or reboot to Bright (that world is the concept implemented in the worst way), I want something better based on the same concept... and if it tackles racism, maybe don't make police be the protagonist.

3 - I feel like science fiction has been pulling its punches when it comes to the environments on other planets. If you read a bunch of astronomy related articles online, you come across some really wild stuff about environments on other planets that is far weirder than anything you see on movie screens. There are planets with ice volcanoes, planets where it rains molten iron, planets where it rains glass sideways, planets where it rains rubies and sapphires, and planets made out of diamond. The best advances in this I have seen are Chronicles of Riddick (having a planet that is freezing cold on the dark side and incinerated on the light side) and the salt flats planet on star-wars, but sci-fi can do much better than those.

4 - I want Jordan Peele (Get out, Us) to direct a Wickerman movie. The Nicolas Cage one is already masterful in its own way (It is the movie most perfectly suited to that actor), but I think Jordan Peele would do his own amazing thing with the concept that would be really good.

5 - Give me some just, regular movies where the protagonist is trans and played by a trans person, but the movie isn't about them being trans. Give me a dumb action movie like Die Hard or a Star Wars with a trans protagonist, that isn't primarily about how hard it is to be trans. It is about them being a cop in the wrong place at the wrong time fighting a group of criminals or a space hero fighting an evil empire, or whatever, they just happen to be trans. That is the kind of representation I want.

Well, I think of my mind as actually being me, so it would be more body switching - as a trans person, I obviously have complicated feelings that make swapping bodies very appealing.

I really want to because it is apparently a good fantasy movie that has the potential to be one of those smart fantasy movies that I want, but it isn't on any of the streaming services I am currently subscribed to :(. Once I get a new job I will probably pick up amazon prime again so I can watch it (and so I can maybe watch the final season for supernatural - I watched all of the seasons leading up to the final season, so it feels like a massive task unfinished to not have seen the final season, but also I know about the controversial thing* (and have seen the clip on youtube) that happens in the final season so am not sure if I want to endure seeing that/support it.)

Spoiler for the final season of supernatural:
*I am referring to Castiel apparently confessing his love for Dean, and immediately getting banished to super-hell for being gay. I am fine with Destiel (or one half of Destiel) being canon, because that is the kind of weird meta fanservice that supernatural does frequently, but am not fine with the progress they made with making Dean less homophobic through his friendship with Felicia Days character being completely undone by his reaction to the confession being very "homophobic guy is uncomfortable with gay friends confession" and with the gay character immediately getting yeeted into turbo-hell.

Things are... not great at the moment.

My friend who is the center of my found family of 6 years seems determined to just give up on our relationship. After 6 years of seeing each other 2-5 times a week, every week, we now only see each other once every other week, and she won't talk with me about stuff. I've been trying to work things out, but she just can't be bothered.

And now my usual ride to tonight's D&D game (this person's boyfriend and ostensibly my friend, who lives around the corner from me - I can't drive and it is a long way so he usually picks me up) has told me he can't take me to tonight's game, and the GM has removed me from the group chat without explanation (I have messaged him to ask and am awaiting a reply).

If the first person continues distancing herself, and my D&D group bails on me.... that is pretty much my entire social life gone.

Playing RPGs with friends is the thing I look forward to each week that keeps me grounded. If I lose that, and the found family I have dedicated so much of myself to connecting with and helping and supporting and building trust with, I don't know how I can cope with that.

I am so very sorry. A conversation needs to be had here but I'm not sure where you would begin. Maybe with the DM? The neighbor/friend? I don't know. But be prepared to do a looooot of potentially painful listening first, and then the hardest part- responding to whatever comes up honestly and without an excess of heat/hurt.

Oh, there is very little chance that I am anywhere near anyone active on these forums, as I live in West Australia. Most of the time when I have interacted with other Australians in online communities, they have been from the Eastern States of Australia (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland), which if you where to drive from Western Australia it would be a 36 hour drive through some pretty not-great driving conditions (not counting stops and breaks and stuff).

To get from Perth (the capital of West Australia) to Sydney (The capital of New South Wales, one of the more populated states) is a similar distance to driving from Las Vegas to Miami, to put things into perspective.

Honestly if it weren't for the weather being so nice and warm in Western Australia (and my parents living here) I would move to the Eastern States or New Zealand (if I had the money) just to be less isolated - Western Australia doesn't have a lot going on or a large pool of people to draw friends from.

Umm, on Freehold's thing - that stuff won't be possible if people are unwilling to try and work things out.

On a positive note, my mother came around today - I was estranged from my parents for about 5 years and have only recently begun letting them back into my life, but it was good to have someone to talk to.

That's probably as far as you could get from Wisconsin.

I can't say I blame you.

Apparently the farthest you can get from Perth (and staying on the planet) is the Bahamas.
