Given the number of... how can I put it nicely?... idiots that come into work sniffling, wheezing, hacking, not wearing a mask, trying to get within six feet of a person......I'm not seeing a lot of hope for the mid to long-term future of social gatherings.
It WAS looking good at SKALCon Except for a few hundred banjo players who didn't feel it was necessary to wear masks -- I guess that prevents playing a banjo effectively?? and Winter WolfCon, but... now?
It's true! You can't wear red suspenders and a mask at the same time it throws off your balance and drives the old hound dog into a panicked frenzy.
It would be like playing a fiddle and NOT challenging the devil to a duel. Why take a chance!

There are players/GMs out there.
I found Org Play brought people in for three reasons;
1) store hosted - so access to a consistent game and a game with people having fun attracts others in the vicinity (birds of a feather).
2) security - a game is a BS session with your acquaintances. People have some insecurities so Org Play can act as a buffer with its rules and Guide.
3) leverage - a few people wanted to take advantage of the system or in rare cases run the game from their player's seat. In the same vein some GMs wanted it to be run Their Way and got aggravated with players doing things they didn't want/expect.
So - you want a live game? Host a game with your paraphernalia out and have 2-4 people play at a venue you want to be in. Don't be the sad lone GM with no players. Just have fun, run repeatable scenarios, etc. You will attract folks and your fill ins can leave. The important part is to be there, be consistent, and help the newbies create good strong characters with personalities.
Libraries are a good neutral place usually with rooms. Game stores can get raucous but have stuff and people go there FOR games.
Conventions are OK to meet folks but the games are quick/expedient and GM's rushed. Just print up a card (business card format) with your contact info to make it easy and so the person doesn't have to rely on their memory.
Game System? I think there are equivalences. DnD5 {WotC requires stores to host games}, PF2, Strfndr are similar lighter less realistic systems with a host of Scenarios and ratings. PF1 and DnD3.5 are similar and there's a big supply of Scenario and ratings. You could do GURPS, Champions(number crunch central), CoC(niche), or UNO/Spades/Hearts.
