[PF2, PbP, Discord] Strength of Thousands LFP

Recruitment

Hello, everyone! I expect this will probably get some attention as it’s a Play-By-Post recruitment for Paizo’s latest AP, so I want to establish a few things right off the bat.

I’m looking for four players to join me over in my PbP Discord to run through Strength of Thousands. I’m very good about my commitments as a GM and do intend to see this through, but I want to make sure that applicants know what they’re getting into when applying. An Adventure Path is an already long campaign made only longer by the PbP format. For reference, I’m currently running another AP through PbP and we’ve just begun book 2 after a year of semi-regular play. A full completion of an AP will take much longer, so this is a pretty long commitment.

I also run a small PbP Discord server where this would be held. All of the posting, rolls, OOC, maps, etc will be there. I’m posting on the Paizo forums to get some new faces (to me) from the community. We use Rod Bot for our rolls and aliases, so if you’re unfamiliar, you may want to check out the commands. There are a few server specific small things (GM rolls for saving throws and initiative, among other things, to save time with PbP), but we’ll discuss that if your application is chosen.

One more thing that I want to get out of the way before getting into the details of your application: This is a server with other people and we’re LGBTQ+ friendly and don’t tolerate sexism, racism, and the works. If you can’t get away with it on Paizo forums, you can’t get away with it on the server. Each PbP has its own separate channel for the groups to talk shop as well as a General chat if you want to shoot the breeze.

All of that out of the way…

Welcome to the Magaambya!

Strength of Thousands is an Adventure Path surrounding the tales of four young students of the Magaambya as they grow from initiates to attendants to lore-speakers, and even teachers at the academy itself!

This Adventure Path uses an optional ruleset known as free archetype with the following caveats:

  • Starting at level 2, you choose between either the Wizard or the Druid Multiclass Dedication.
  • You do not need to meet the ability score prerequisites for the chosen multiclass (though it is recommended).

I, myself, am adding a note here that this free archetype does not in any way lock you off from choosing another dedication (i.e. You can ignore the portion of the wizard/druid dedication that says you can’t choose another dedication until you take two or more feats from the free archetype dedication). This is covered in the Strength of Thousands Players’ Guide which you will also need to make your character and give you some background information about the AP.

Alright, that said, here’s what I need from you:

Applicant Information:
Character Name: A must-have.

Ancestry and Heritage: All common, uncommon, and rare ancestries are fine along with anything that you would like to try. The Magaambya is accepting of people from all walks of life.

Background: Your background must come from the Players’ Guide and details who has sponsored you to join the prestigious academy.

Class: What class would you like to play? You can include a few mechanical details here like, “Necromancer Wizard with a focus on Medicine,” “Tyrant Champion with a greatsword,” or “Fighter planning to grab alchemist dedication” to help inform a bit of your playstyle.

Short Character Biography: Something short and sweet, no need to attach a novel, but tell us a little bit about your character and what brings them to the Magaambya and a little bit about their plans for the future, if any.

This isn’t the place to create full characters from start to finish with mechanical details and everything. I’m just looking to put together a team first. When the game starts, we’ll put together characters.

Now, the summer is a fantastic time to get out and enjoy yourselves and I’m making use of it quite a bit myself. The application process is a touch long, but I imagine there’s going to be a number of applicants to make the job of picking four quite difficult. That said, the deadline for characters is Wednesday, September 1st, midnight JST (Japan Standard Time) which probably also brings me to my own short introduction since I feel like it’s important to know the GM you’re looking to play with.

My Information:
I’m a GM who has been playing TRPGs for more than 20 years now and have really taken a shine to Pathfinder 2e. It’s become my go-to system for fantasy games and generally what I run at home. I currently (and for the foreseeable future) live in Japan which started me on Play-By-Post games as I could still run games for friends abroad. I currently run an in-person game of Abomination Vaults along with two Play-By-Post games. I think that it’s good to know the rules of the system, but it’s also a lot of rules, so mistakes are bound to happen. Try to come in as informed as possible, but don’t beat yourself up if you flub a rule. Also, I do believe that “Rule of Cool” exists for a reason and am generally a “Yes, but…” kind of GM.

Thank you all for your consideration, and I look forward to seeing some fantastic submissions!

I've got a lizardfolk ranger I might retool for this, going for the druid free archetype.

So I hope you have seen my Evindyl submission in the AoE thread, but with your permission, I would like to apply to your campaign also. I am probably equally if not more enthused for SoT because, having gone to boarding school, I know what a 'magical' place it can be.

I just wanted to first say, thank you for doing this. Sounds like you have a good setup on Discord for this. I have been tempted to try a Discord game vs just the forum here. In fact I was currently looking up tools to set up a discord server for a PbP game, when I saw this!

I am definitely interested. I will try to break down sections mentioned:

About Me:

I have been playing Pathfinder for 5 or 6 years now. I have GMed many games, in person, but started doing PbP a few years ago. I have had a few fail, but a few more that have kept going. I am GMing a PF1 game (that I inherited so it wouldn’t die), and a PF2 game that is going pretty well.

I am pretty dedicated player when it comes to posting. I sometimes get a bit behind when I am GMing, but I eventually get to it. Discord will likely be even easier to keep up as a player, since it is less of a crafted posts.

I am tempted to start a Starfinder PbP game. Been tempted to do it in Discord, so seeing how this runs would be very interesting.

Application Information:

Character Name:
Haueth

Ancestry and Heritage:
Bloodhound Shoony (if this rare one is ok. I just love the idea of small pug bard)

Background
Unsponsored

Class:
Polymath Bard, with the plan to take wizard Dedication at level 2. Support, knowledge, skill monkey. With a bit of ranged magic as backup.

Short Bio:
Through a series of strange events, Haueth has moved all the way from Osirian down to the Magaambya. Call it bad luck, or fate, once Haueth learned of the magical academy he was able to keep going south though dangerous roads, terrible passes through mountains, and dangerous inns. When he got close he realized he needed to be sponsored. He tried to make this happen though trying to be helpful. Because helpful people are wanted everywhere, right!? Trying to take care of some textbooks to bring into school, they where destroyed. I mean, it wasn’t really his fault. He tried! Doesn’t that count? He didn’t realize that reading them over and opening them up overnight would have caused all those wood eating insects to eat them all. Anyway, he is excited to be here.

Personality:
Haueth is friendly and up beat most of the time. Maybe slightly more trusting than he should be of people. At the same time loves learning and loves digging through books. Enjoys the joys of life. Really just wants to be helpful to his friends, who he makes easily. Loyal.

This looks really, really neat. I'm definitely considering some kind of wizard/fighter because it is a classic. I'm a tentative dot, we'll see how the recruitment I'm currently in goes. If I don't get in, I'll definitely be making something for this.

Absolutely a-okay!

Also, I'm aware of the AoE recruitment going on right now and encourage players for both APs! I will say that anyone who gets accepted for the AoE game will, in the sake of fairness to other applicants, have their application pulled from this game. I'd love to find a PbP home for as many players as possible.

Hi Ruzza,

I'm quite interested in playing an AP in PbP. So, let me introduce myself:

About me:
Hello, my name's SuperBidi (him/he), I live in Europe and am not a native english speaker. I play TRPGs for nearly 30 years, both as a player and GM. I arrived on these boards when I was playing Starfinder but quickly moved to PF2 that I find a really nice system. I know the rules quite well but I consider that the "GM is always right" when it comes to rulings. I also know the world of Golarion honorably, Pathfinder Wiki's my friend.

I have a small experience with PbP, both on these boards and on Discord. The biggest one being a one-year long run of Fall of Plaguestone. It can give you an idea of both my commitment and my availability (I played Giggett). I've also played a few PFS adventures in PbP.

I don't have a character at the ready, yet. I'll look a bit more at the Mwangi and Magaambya lore before creating one. I was thinking about playing a wizard for quite some time, so it may be a good occasion.

Awesome! Let me know if there is any other adjustments needed. Will stay active here. Good luck everyone :)

I've barely cut my teeth on PF2, but have been interested in joining up for more. Do the adventure paths go up to 20th level at this point in time?

Thesius Monteblanc wrote:

This one certainly does!

Ruzza wrote:

Awesome! I wanted to keep max level in mind so I don't make grand plans that were never going to come to be. Of course those plans could always change, but I like having something to plan towards.

Here is the character I'd like to play:

My character:
Character Name: Galandil

Ancestry and Heritage: Fey-Touched Gnome

Background: Sponsored by a village

Class: Wizard (Evoker) and dino-rider!
Arcane caster and damage dealer.

Short Character Biography: Galandil used to be a merchant, specialized in rare magic items and historical artifacts. When the Mwangi peoples recently increased their relationships with the rest of Golarion, he was eager to trade with them. Discovering brand new cultures, Galandil became fascinated by this new continent.
He slowly spent more and more time among the Bonuwat, and definitely settled in one of their village, learning their language, culture and customs. He recently discovered the existence of the Magaambya and, one obsession to another, he decided to develop his magical skills. The village agreed to sponsor him so he travelled to the Academy with all his gear and his going away gift: a dinosaur egg.

I haven't decided much about the future of Galandil, outside raising a dino to ultimately ride it. I'd be happy to integrate more elements from the adventure (religion, groups and such) into his backstory and future goals.

Yes, please. I've wanted to play this since I heard about it.

About Me:

I've been playing ttrpgs on and off for quite a while now, including a several short campaigns in PF1e. I bought the 2nd Edition Humble Bundle recently and have really loved the system, both for the mechanics (especially character customization) and Paizos commitment to diversity and inclusion, especially compared to certain other unnamed companies. I've only played a little PFS (and GMed a one-shot for some of my normal gaming group) so far, but I've really been enjoying it.

I'm really excited to try a PbP system, because between a variable work schedule, other hobbies, and wanting to actually spend some time with my family, I don't have time for another regular commitment, even though I want to play more games.

My Character:

Character Name: Chirk

Ancestry and Heritage: Stickytoe Grippli

Background: Sponsored by Teacher Ot

Class: Acrobatic monk with the druid dedication.

Short Character Biography: It's a toss up whether Chirk took an interest in birds because she loved to climb up close to them, or whether she started climbing to get a better look at the birds. Either way, when the Ots used her village as a base for their study of the local wildlife, Chirk quickly became their valued assistant. It took several return visits for them to convince Chirk to leave her jungle home, but now that she has taken the plunge she is eager for the learning and new experiences she is sure to find.

Well, I have fallen in love with the Magaambya since seeing the Magaambyan Arcanist back in PF1, so when I saw the Strength of Thousand AP I had been waiting for a chance to play it.

About me:

I am a 29 years old guy who has played TTRPGs for more than 10 years, starting with D&D 3.5 and slowly migrating to PF1 and lately to PF2.
I'm not a native english speaker, so PbP games always kinda scared me for the language barrier. I currently run a Rise of the Runelords (converted to PF2) game IRL, and a PbP Age of Ashes game here on paizo forums (with IRL friends, in italian)
We already completed a Kingmaker PbP game, so I'd say I can handle the additional commitment as a player.

I love the crunchy aspects of the rules, and I love playing with the rules when making characters, to create something different from the usual.
I have a good knowledge of the PF2 system, if that could help.

Sadly I never played on discord, but I can learn quickly if I will get the chance.

I still have to think about a character, but I'd love to play something strictly tied to the Academy. With the free archetype rule the first thing that comes to my mind is a character that takes the Magaambyan Attendant/Halcyon Speaker dedication path, probably starting out Wizard and multiclassing Druid.

Will Secrets of Magic be available to use?

I do have a question...

If I did up a monk with ki focus powers, could I have them be primal instead of divine so it syncs better with druid?

Moonwave wrote:

That's a great question! Yes, Secrets of Magic is good to use for characters. If someone wants to play a magus or summoner, when the game starts, they'll just use the playtest version. They will then get a free full rebuild with the book releases. If, for whatever reason, the player doesn't like the full version, they can instead get a full rebuild into a different class.

I have a logistical question about the posting schedule: would you consider an applicant who didn't post on weekends?

I can't get Discord to run off of my phone, so I'd only be able to post during the weekdays (and mostly during the day US Pacific time), but I usually check multiple times during that block. I played a PbD game for PaizoCon and it was fine but mostly because the GM didn't post on weekends either.

If it sounds like it would work logistically, I'll come up with an application. If not, I understand, I usually stick to Paizo PbP for this reason.

Here's my submission!

My Character:

Full Name: P'oxtan Chimbaal Ahk-Tzacal-Cha'ak, P'oxtan for short

Ancestry and Heritage: Unseen Lizardfolk

Background: Sponsored by a Village

Class: Ranger, front-line damage dealer

Short Background: P'oxtan comes from an iruxi village on the far northern fringes of distant and ancient Droon, the flower of iruxi civilization deep in the south of Garund. He was a wanderer by nature, reflecting in his name, meaning "Wandering Son of the Storm Father" in the complex tongue of the iruxi. While a hunter by nature, he was entranced by the ancient traditions of animism and ancestor-worship practiced by the iruxi, and resolved to learn the mystic arts to grow closer to them. There was no better place in all of Garund to do that than the Magaambya. His village elders, while skeptical in typical iruxi fashion, eventually relented, and sponsored his entry to that fabled academy.

About Me:

I'm a college student who's been playing TTRPGs, mostly Pathfinder, for probably 10 years at this point. I'm fairly proficient with Pathfinder 2e, and I'm playing in several games of it, both live and play-by-post. I've had a few play-by-posts on Discord, and I've really enjoyed them!

KingHotTrash wrote:

I had to think about this for a bit, but I'm going to say no to this one. While not perfect, there are some little interactions with it that feel a little off to me. That said, is SoM has something for primal monks, then that's a-okay (I know we're getting some monk stuff, but not 100% sure).

Absolutely! My weekends are personally spent often with my newborn, so I completely understand.

I am intrigued by the SoM options. I am super interested in the Magus, but I really like my Bard concept. If there are some other muse options, in SoM, I might go with that though. Really not sure if I should go with a martial Bard or more support.

Either way a Bard with wizard dedication is the plan.

Again, thank you Ruzza. August is going to feel quite long :)

Unfortunate. I'll see what I can think of then since I really liked the idea I was brewing.

After thinking about it, I prefer to play Strength of Thousands than Agents of Edgewatch. Because of time constraint (AoE players will be chosen before yours), I will remove my application for the other PbP.

Liberty's Edge

I would like to try the new summoner class. I am interested in the variation on spell progression, and have an old PFS character here (Leepo) that I think I would like to re-imagine in 2e.

Character Name: Leepo Toggenburg

Ancestry and Heritage: Fey-touched Gnome

Background: Sponsored by a Stranger

Class: Very friendly and innocent-looking summoner who's best friend and confidant is her beast or dragon eidolon. It is also the "muscle" of the pair, while she is more of an information gatherer.

Short Character Biography: Leepo's early years were strange and fascinating, having been "acquired" by sprites as a newborn and raised among the fey. It was never quite clear if she had been kidnapped or sold, but the fey were a light-hearted folk and so Leepo learned that trait, as well as a few tricks. As she gained a few years, the fey started secretly taking her on trips to various cities, using Leepo as cover to gather more information on the civilizations of big folk. Usually regarded as a street urchin, Leepo quickly learned to adapt to her surroundings, whatever they may be. Recently a stranger, who apparently had been watching her, hidden in the shadows, approached her. Promising great things for her future, he insisted that she join Magaambya to study and enhance her skills. Her fey guardians agreed, and further encouraged this change. Without even giving it much thought, she agreed to this grand new adventure...

I would be super excited to join this, I love the PF2E system, it's diversity of options and the narrative feel of character creation. As an added bonus, a Play by Discord style game works wonders for my schedule, as between work, where I am often on call, and various family responsibilities, being able to catch up on posts over a 15 minute break is far easier than trying to schedule a regular sit down VTT style game.

That being said, I would like to submit the following;

Quote:

Name: Jhereg Draegaran

Ancestry & Heritage: Human, Ifrit
Background: Unsponsored, which means association with the Tempest-Sun faction within Magaambya itself.
Class: Dragon Instinct Barbarian. Sorcerer Dedication at 2nd, with the Wyrmblessed Bloodline. Since we get either Druid or Wizard free, I'd likely take the Primal Magic of the Druid to mix in with the Sorcerous options.
Background: Jhereg and his twin sister, Jhegaala, were born on the slops of Asuulek's maw, to a clan devoted to the ancient red dragon's service. Jhereg was trained as a slayer of the tribe, a fearsome dragon-imbued warrior, with primordial fire in his veins. His sister was trained as a scholar, adept in the arcane arts. In time an emissary of Magaambye visited the clan, and due to the prestige of the school, was permitted to live with them, and observe them. In time, Jhegaala and the emissary developed a friendship, with her eventually receiving sponsorship in the school. However the clan did not want their children leaving the dragon's service, so they slew the emissary and the twins fled. During their journey to Magaamya, Jhereg's sister died, and so he petitioned for entrance to the academy, as his sister couldn't live her dream, so he would, for her. Gods and dragons be damned.

Should you have any questions, feel free to hit me up at ZeroPrime#5907 on Discord.

My little one is about to turn 4. We have been prepping her as much as possible. She loves rolling dice. We say things like "Oh look you took an action to get cover!".

My favorite though.. I named out roomba Rovagug. So every day when it goes and does its thing, my daughter will say things like "Oh hi Rovagug", "No Rovagug, don't eat that!", etc.

My wife is also 100% on board.. Going to have a built in player soon! :)

I just realized that this AP is a 6-booker (I thought it was one of the 3-bookers). That's a little too far out for me to be planning, so I'm not going to submit an application. Best wishes on your game, hopefully some day I'll be able to commit to something of that magnitude.

Hey hi, I know there's been a good bit of interest in this already, so I'm sorry to have to make your job of picking PCs harder, but I'm really excited about the premise of this AP and would love to be involved.

About Me:
I'm Ollie, I'm a 29-year-old artist and cook, and I've been playing TTRPGs in one form or another since I was 8. I got into Pathfinder 1e about 8 years ago and have been playing almost exclusively that since, mostly over discord and roll20, but I've been really interested in trying out 2e. This would be my first time playing 2e, so it would inevitably be a little bit of a learning process, but I know enough going in to not be learning from scratch. I've also been in one campaign for that entire 8-year period and have a long history with written RP, so something long-running is definitely good for me.

Character Submission:
Character Name: Raashida

Ancestry & Heritage: Venomous Anadi

Background: Sponsored by a Village

Class: Alchemist, Chirurgeon.

Short Character Biography: A sheltered and somewhat oblivious young woman, Raashida's village sponsored her to the Magaambya for two reasons: first, that she exhibited exemplary skill with the Alchemical arts and would soon need a more skilled mentor than they could provide, and second, that as skilled as she might be, her experiments were starting to become too elaborate and too hazardous for those around her. So, she left the familiar comforts of her home village for a world much bigger and stranger than the one she knew, and it has been... Interesting. While booksmart and endlessly hungry for new information, Raashida unfortunately never learned many key social skills, and has trouble with some of the nuances of a majority-human civilization. At least she's learned by now not to approach strangers as a giant spider. That's progress.

Silver Crusade

Had soooooo many ideas running through my mind for this, I'm absolutely giddy, hopefully this one is acceptable and enjoyable.

Character Submission:
Character Name: Snickersnack

Ancestry and Heritage: Fleshwarp (Sylph)

Background: Unsponsored

Class: Spirit Instinct Barbarian who wishes to explore and learn.

Short Character Biography: Upon spotting the horned azure serpentine figure most would quickly call out serpent or Serpentfolk, Snickersnack would just as quickly and proudly retort that he is in fact a dragon! The truth is... a tad bit more complicated. After being cast out from Sekmin society Snickersnack's "mother", used her fleshwarping and occult knowledge to reconstitute the family she had lost with the flesh of a recently deceased Cloud Dragon she stumbled upon. As well as some Iruxi here and there as needed. Snickersnack was one such successful son. Left to his own devices the cobbled together serpent exhibited more in common with his draconic flesh than his Sekmin remnants, preferring wandering and whimsy and took to learning out of delight rather than a desire for power. His mother for her part encouraged it, marveling equally at her son and creation, though she found herself split between devoting time to teach him and her own work and studies. Noticing his seeming lack of innate magic and mindset differing too much from a Sekmin she hatched a plan, subtly she began to drop hints about a far away school full of wonders and magic and good food. It didn't take much before Snickersnack was gleefully packing his meager belongings and heading out into the world, promising to write his mother when he could. A gesture that delighted and confused the Sekmin.

Don't worry if you're coming in "late," as I'm going to view all submissions equally. It'll be a hell of a decision to make come September, but I want you all to know that your characters sound fantastic. Going down the line, the submissions so far are...

Evindyl Starr - Half-elf runescarred rogue (Evindyl)
Haueth - Unsponsored shoony polymath bard (NeoEvaX)
Galandil - Village sponsored gnome evoker and dino-rider (SuperBidi)
Chirk - Sponsored by Teacher Ot grippli acrobatic monk (Specializing)
P'oxtan - Village sponsored lizardfolk ranger (Simeon)
Leepo Toggenburg - Stranger sponsored gnome summoner (PJP)
Jhereg Draegaran - Unsponsored human ifrit dragon barbarian (Zen Gypsy)
Raashida - Village sponsored anadi chirurgeon alchemist (Ollie-Twist)
Snickersnack - Unsponsored fleshwarped slyph spirit barbarian (Rysky)

Hope that's everyone! An impressive list so far!

Nervous staring at the calendar. The list is going to get bigger, I just know it.

Does look like a good set of options! Don't envy your choices.

For what its worth, my bard will likely take Hymm of Healing to help with healing, if we lack a more "dedicated" healer. In 2e, Bards can fill that role quite well, which is nice.

Thanks again for doing this.

I love the flexibility of PF2E in regards to healing. I'm playing a disgraced doctor in an Extinction Curse game. Barber background for Risky Surgery, versatile heritage for Battle Medicine, and, at 2nd, the Medic Archetype & skill assurance (medicine), all while being a front line swashbuckler. So I love how many options there are to make it work, between class, skills, and dedications.

Also, I realized that I've neglected to introduce myself in the post where I discussed my character concept, but not myself.

I've been playing RPG's since grade 7 or 8, so that's 83 or so. Came up with D&D, then superhero games in the 90's, Champions and the Hero System. Various sci fi games, Traveller, Star Trek, Star Wars, Robotech, Battletech and Rifts. From there I got into Whitewolf with VtM, primarily. Switched back to a regular D&D thing, we played through 4e, so I never branched out to Pathfinder. However about ten years ago I moved from my hometown to Northern Ontario, and started playing PbP games over various forums, eventually discovering Starfinder. Via SF, I learned about Pathfinder, but by then it was so bloated that, as a newcomer, I got lost in various archetypes, variant classes, and house rules that I couldn't make heads or tails. Effectually I found PF2E, which struck a balance between the rules lite DnD 5e, and 1st edition crunch.

Now I've played alot of PbP over the last ten years on various boards, and I always try to a) push the plot. I don't like to force viewpoints on other players, but if we're stalling, I'll take a direction, any direction, to keep forward momentum in a game. And b) engage the other players, trying to pull them into scene through conversation, or direct questions.

As a guy with a full family life and a hectic job, on call in an industry that runs 24-7/365 I much prefer Discord to forum posting. I find I can get a post in here or there through my day via phone, rather than logging into boards, formatting the post, and such.

As you can tell I'm super stoked for this game and hope I get a chance to know the GM and the rest of the players!

This sounds fun, I’d like to throw my lot out there. I play/GM a few games on discord and always thought it was just a little better than the forums due to ease of access.

Good luck to everyone and let’s see who gets to go to school!

Character Concept:

Character Name: Malaelda Mithmirdren

Background: sponsored by a stranger

Ancestry: Elf, Seer Elf heritage

Class: Sorcerer, mulling over what bloodline I want I’m torn between demonic and imperial. Doesn’t really affect the backstory though as it only slightly changes. I plan to do the wizard dedication to lean into the researching on her magical potential.

Character Bio: Born to a small noble family within Kyonin, Malaelda is the only daughter of a trio of children. Her brothers happen to be excellent swordsmen and one even managing to join the lantern bearers. As she got older and an arranged marriage was established something strange happened a month before the wedding. She began to display strange and uncontrollable magic and do things that defied logic. Fearful of the implications to the family name, she was sequestered away and the marriage over. However given a chance meeting with a stranger on the streets of Iadara on a trip with her parents to see a scholar, she met a stranger. Asking her questions and after some scrutiny of her talents he recommended her to seek out the Magaambya and learn there. Studying and looking into magic she realized she may learn more about herself and the strange magic she holds, she convinced her parents of the idea. Passing aptitude exams in Kyonin got her a chance to attend and she left via aiudara to go to the academy.

About me!:

A little about myself, I’ve been playing TTRPG’s for about 7ish years now. I’ve started with pathfinder, shifted to 5e due to ease of use over discord, and have gotten back into pathfinder 2e and stuck with it since. I’m a big fan of the system and think it’s possibly the best to play. I GM a Hells Rebels game I play with some friends. However the itch keeps on scratching and without extra time I’ve taken to PbP to get the fix. Discord usually as the games I’ve played on the boards have a tendency to slow down and peter out.

Personal life I’m 23, I have a full time job thankfully at home now so it’s a little more laid back. Though I have a 2 year old daughter that makes that harder. With some obligations that eat up weekends it can get busy. But I’ve managed to make discord work for quite a few games and have a couple that are as old as my daughter when I first started discord PbP.

I like to characters that are complex and often have a central theme to them. Though I always make sure to check with the party and DM if anything gets a little to crazy for the story or it’s something nobody really want to have in their party. The main thing is that we are all having fun, it is a game and at the end of the day that’s it.

So pleased to be at the beginning (see how I didn't say top) of this list! Could not be more psyched. I have some adapting to do to finalize, but had always planned for his campaign background to be Sponsored by Mother (itself an adaptation of Family)

It is also possible that in the process, Evindyl's departure to boarding school saved his parent's marriage (also possible that he still resents his father's humanity)

MORE SOON!!!

Alrighty, I got an idea that I really like and want to submit for your perusal.

Character Name: Rak Beetlebite
Ancestry and Heritage: Razortooth Goblin
Background: Stranger Sponsored
Class: Thieving Rogue With Magical Trickster, Focusing On Evocation For Hilarity
Short Character Biography: Wherever there are slums, there are goblins to be found. An infestation in the corners of every society, the city of Nantambu no different. A member of the Rootgrub Tribe, Rak was blessed with a mind as sharp as his prodigious fangs. Keen to scrounge for the juiciest beetles and grubs, he encountered a strange figure that spoke to him. After many strange questions, most he can't remember, he was suggested to go to Magaambya and learn the arcane secrets therein.

Rak isn't really sure why he is at this strange school in this strange place, but he does realize that he has a bigger brain than most goblins. Maybe he can do some good and help the Rootgrubs not just have to eat roots and grubs.

What I've done on a few occasions is run through the list of submissions and have my character give his impressions on each character as if they'd briefly met, or been introduced.

It helps set up future relationships, and gives us something to think about for the next month before Ruzza has the unenviable task of picking the final roster.

I like that idea. I might go through the various submissions and give a little thought on each.

Will help me find my character's voice too. Nice idea Zen.

We could also play the day our characters went to the Magaambya just to discover that the person in charge of admissions made a mistake and called everyone and not just the 4 that were supposed to be taken. It would give Ruzza a lot of food for thought to see how we play our characters and how they interact together.
But that would ask for a dedicated forum.

Silver Crusade

... and would be very very sad.

Ultimately, it will be kind of sad, as Ruzza will only choose 4 characters.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

In my dream world of having far more time than I do, I would just map out a Discord server and run through a graduating class-worth of characters through differing adventures and mixing up the classes over the course of the game. But my current non-dream world still has a day job, sadly, haha.

Alright, I dropped out of my other recruitment because the idea of the goblin just sounds so damn fun.

That is an excellent idea Zen. I'll have to obsessively go through everyone's idea and see what I think.

Well seeing as others have stated they enjoyed my idea, I might as well get the ball rolling. To begin, I present you with more information on Jhereg Draegaran ...

Appearance:
Jhereg is a short, broad shouldered man of Osirion descent, born on the slopes of Asuulek's Mouth in the far west of that nation. His skin has been bronzed from a youth spent in proximity to the lake of magma in which his clan's lord and regent, Asuulek, slumbers. Trained as a warrior and protector of the great & terrible dragon, his body is hard slabs of muscle and scar tissue, tattooed with draconic runes marking him as property of Asuulek, the rune wrapping across his shoulders, over his biceps and chest, encircling his heart and rising up and over his shorn scalp.

He wears dragon scales, shed by the kin of his master, sewn over hard boiled leathers, and embellished with bone and shards meant to emulate the fearsome nature of his former lord. Armed with a quiver of short spears, and a massive maul crafted from bone, iron and wood, in the fashion of a dragon's maw. Jhereg appears a truly brutish and fearsome warrior when in more civilized company.

Image reference: https://i.postimg.cc/7YRBWHHL/Dragon-Instinct.jpg

Personality:
Jhereg is a loyal, dedicated warrior, fiercely protective of those he loves, or has chosen to call friend. Chief amongst those is his twin sister, Jhegaala, a trained arcanist, and aspiring student of arcane mysteries. While not as gifted as his twin in the arcane arts, Jhereg is possessed of an intense curiosity, often picking up and studying delicate objects, studying their craftsmanship. However, given that his calloused hands are more used to wielding weapons of war, those fine objects are often dropped or damaged before his inspection is complete.

Jhereg has long observed nature, both of his tribe, and of the greater world, and he feels that change is a constant. Fire changes wood to ash, water wears stone to dust, and the seasons continue in their cycle, life giving way to death, only to be reborn in a constant stream of change and chaos.

However, having lost his twin to tragedy, there is a center of deep sorrow within the young warrior, a sorrow he does not wish others to observe, nor absolve. He continues to honor Jhegaala, at meals he will set a place for his sister, sharing his food, to appease her spirit, ensure she is remembered, and loved, if by none other than himself. He possesses her fledgling spellbook, and will often communicate with her, by writing his own thoughts, and dreams and aspirations within it's pages.

Thoughts on Haueth:
On the slopes of Asuulek's Mouth, those of the slayer caste were not permitted pets. It was thought that such affection was a weakness. On first encountering the Shoony, one is struck by his canine features, almost a familiarity. However, on spending time with the small creature, one is struck by their intelligence, wit, and honest, compassion. I will admit, I was quick to dismiss Huag, on initial meeting, due to his slight stature and pet-like demeanor, however, his loyalty is something to be admired and, even, aspired to.

Thoughts on Galandil:
A gnome of some intelligence and arcane knowledge, though, intelligence and knowledge are words that could describe many within the Magaambya academy. There is something about Galandil's manner that reminds me of a merchant selling wares, a false confidence, bravado, that I find, questionable of character. However, he carries with him an egg, almost dragon-like in nature, that he seems to afford a great care and respect. That, at the least, I can understand and admire.

Thoughts on Chirk:
What manner of place is this, where dogs walk and speak with wit and charm, and frogs walk on two legs, engaged in the study of self and martial perfection? She has displayed a level of athleticism and acrobatic talent that most, twice her size, would find difficult to duplicate. Chirk is easy to dismiss on appearance alone, however, she is sponsored by Takulu Ot and his wife, Niana, students of nature, and observers of birds and their habits. Given this sponsorship, perhaps I should not be one to so quickly dismiss Chirk's heart or talents.

Thoughts on P'oxtan:
A member of the lizardfolk tribes from the wetlands of southern Garund. P'oxtan Chimbaal Ahk-Tzacal-Cha'ak appears to be a skilled hunter, with a reverence for the nature that surrounds him. Given the beauty of the Mwangi landscape and the creatures that reside upon it, that, in and of itself, is enough for me to respect him. He, like many of his peers, has journeyed far from his home, in conversation a loose translation of his name lead me to believe that he, like myself, understands what it is to live up to bearing the expectations of someone far greater than one's village elders. That, at the least, is something we share.

Thoughts on Teepo:
A mercurial, fey-like gnome, she travels with a creature, whom she shares an almost primal bond. The irreverence she displays, while humor can be a bond, tricks and such, played on one's peers can affect their morale. Her fey-touched demeanor gives one pause for concern, however, she has considerable skill in conjuration and summoning, and should be treated with respect, and perhaps a little caution, despite appearances.

Thoughts on Raashida:
A curious woman, spiders are viewed with suspicion and disdain by many tribes and cultures. However, the keen intelligence displayed by the anadi woman is remarkable, she is, though, unfamiliar with interactions with the far flung tribes of humanity, and given her appearance and, seeming, indifference, could cause her presence to be viewed with suspicion. However, one cannot deny her keen intellect or passion for the alchemical arts.

Thoughts on Snickersnack:
A man with whom, it would seem, I share much. Given to passion and outbursts of rage, whose flesh has been molded by draconic influence and power. However, he is possessed of a nature unlike any my own master, and not driven by cruelty, desire and the thirst for power. That, in at least, is cause to extend to the man more trust than I would otherwise. However, there is something of his nature that rings, false, perhaps, though I would not accuse him of such for fear of angering an ally and a peer.

Thoughts on Malaelda:
An elven woman, noble, she is more like a dragon in confidence, and demeanor, than many I have seen. I feel she would be fearsome to behold, should she become angered. She is curious about her nature, and contemplative in her study of the arcane arts. Someone who is used to being part of a ruling class, her nobility is easy to see, if one has eyes to observe. A keen mind, and a sharp tongue, a woman who I can both understand and respect. Someone I feel Jhegaala would like if she had had the opportunity to make her acquaintance.

Thoughts on Evindyl Starr:
A man of mixed heritages, devoted to his mother, who supported him through his fathers disapproval and departure. I am curious, at times, of the familial connections between other cultures, having been raised by the Draegaran tribe, itself, rather than a singular mother and father. However, his devotion to his mother is admirable, and having had a twin myself, something I too can understand. His magical knowledge appears, almost innately, though there is much anger in him, which he must put aside if he wishes to establish meaningful connections with his peers.

Thoughts on Rak:
A goblin of sharp mind, and teeth, a troublesome creature, but he seems to be more focused than many of his kind. Typically a servitor race to those who can subjugate them, I see, at times, a warrior's heart in his small chest. Assuming he is not stuffing his cavernous maw with food, or drink, which is often. If he approached his studies with the same ravenous hunger for knowledge, he would do himself a great credit.

And that's all for now!

Here’s some more details on P’oxtan and what he thinks of the other studens!

Appearance and Personality:

Standing at six foot four, P’oxtan is a massive, heavily muscled specimen of an iruxi. Large, four-fingered hands end in razor-sharp claws and a colorful red crest that unfurls in times of emotional stress contrasts with the green scales that cover the rest of his body. He is, however, able to slowly shift the colors of his scales to match his surroundings.

While the legendarily traditionalist society of Droon considers him something of a rebel, P’oxtan is a staunch follower of iruxi customs to all outsiders. He observes the many rites and rituals demanded by their ancient religious traditions, and he sees all life as part of an endless cycle. The world ever persists, he is but a small part of it. Balance must be maintained, for any deviation from it would be disastrous. He despises evil for it’s cruelty and destructiveness, yet sees little reason to crusade one cause or another. Maintaining the great balance is enough. The nuances of mammalian emotion confuse him to no end, and those unfamiliar with iruxi behavior might think him cold and dispassionate. In truth, he is as passionate as any other mortal and is deeply loyal to those he cares for.

Haueth:

Haueth confuses P’oxtan. His zeal for life despite constant setbacks is inspiring, but the simple fact that P’oxtan had no idea shoonies existed until he met Haueth perturbs him. At odds with the cool tempers of the iruxi, Haueth’s unrelenting excitement can be exhausting for P’oxtan.

Galandil:

Dinosaurs are holy creatures to the iruxi, and P’oxtan cannot help to respect a person who’s connected to them on a level as deep as Galandil is. His connection, too, to the native people of the Mwangi is reassuring to his good intentions for the land and it’s creatures. Despite that, the iruxi bear a deep mistrust of outsiders, and he is vigilant for any suspicious actions.

Chirk:

Of all the aspirants to the Magaambya, P’oxtan likes Chirk the most. The grippli of southern Garund have long been fast friends to the iruxi of Droon, and that puts P’oxtan at ease around Chirk.

Leepo:

Leepo’s connection to the fey is the source of both hope and concern in P’oxtan. Deeply connected to nature, the fey are nonetheless a totally unpredictable force. If Leepo’s mortal perspective can temper the mercurial nature of the fey, she should prove a valuable ally.

Raashida:

The anadi are an insular and mysterious people, but as neighbors to Droon they have done nothing to rouse the famously long-lasting ire of the iruxi. P’oxtan enjoys Raashida’s presence, though the alchemical arts are new to P’oxtan.

Snickersnack:

Quite frankly, Snickersnack disturbs P’oxtan. The cobbled-together nature of her reptilian form is obviously unnatural, and that concern turns to outright anger when the iruxi origin of some of Snickersnack’s reptilian parts comes to light. If P’oxtan is to fully trust her in any capacity, it will take time and effort on both their parts.

Malaelda:

P’oxtan, while possessing a passing familiarity with the elven peoples of the Mwangi Expanse, is confused by those who hail from Kyonin. Simply, she is an outsider to Garund, and it is hard for P’oxtan to trust any who do not hail from it.

Rak:

Having little experience with goblins, P’oxtan bears few of the prejudices against them that natives of the Inner Sea might. Rak’s talent for foraging is something that P’oxtan can respect, however.

Jhereg:

P’oxtan greatly respecrs Jhereg’s veneration of the natural cycles, and his connection to dragons similarly inspires a deep respect for the draconic warrior. However, his connection to a beast as cruel and destructive of those natural cycles as a red dragon concerns P’oxtan.

Aren't we kinda doing that here!? 2 candidates already have thoughts on their fellow applicants (although one of those clearly must not have had a chance to meet Evindyl ...)

Believe it or not, this also would not have to be the result of a gigantic accident either. Having actually gone to boarding school, it is not hard to imagine that the Magaambya does outreach activities; certainly possible there could be gatherings in major cities, like Absalom or Magnimar. LOL, it's also run by wizards, so it's not like they couldn't teleport in the candidates from far flung regions, just to get a taste of the faculty & students they might be joining.

Evindyl does have thoughts on P'oxtan though ;)

Oops, I didn’t spot your submission in the thread! Where might I find that?

Tuesday @ 11:38pm I added some updated info, but my original statement of interest is right in the beginning. However, it refers to my submission in the Agents of Edgewatch recruitment, so why don't I compile a thorough backstory for SoT. This story deserves it I think :)
