So my group is finally getting back to our Curse of the Crimson Throne game after over a year off thanks to Covid and an international move. The problem lies in that we lost two players, and are replacing them with two new players. We're still in book one, so it's a little tougher to find a good entry point for two new characters.
But last night I had an epiphany to bring in at least one of them, and that's to replace Trinia Sabor with the new PC, and allow the new character to be on the opposite end of the shingles chase. I'm delighted with this idea and can't wait to see it play out on Saturday.

Could the new player(s) not be someone that is already after Trinia? Maybe someone loyal to the new Queen that wants to see the assassin dead but can come around when they are shown that this assassin seems to be just a meek painter.
Personally, I think your should be fine as well, but it immediately gives away that the Queen is lying and might even put the PCs against her too early as a personal vendetta of the accused player. However, if you aren't trying for an intrigue heavy first 2/3 modules, go for your idea.
Depending on the new characters' backstories, they could also be
*A newly minted Sable Company Marine that forgets to call for backup when he spots some neerdowells running on the unsafe rooftops.
*An ally of Trinia trying to help her escape and who would profess her innocence.
*A special guard sent by Cressida Kroft to ensure that they didn't perform any extrajudicial killings and brought Trinia back for questioning as she asks of them.
*A Cerulean Society member sent to capture Trinia as a token for the thieves' guild (and eventual holding by the Arkonas).
*A student/apprentice of Vencarlo and/or Blackjack who wants to save Trinia knowing she is a likely scapegoat.
*A cleric of Abadar/Asmodeus/Sarenrae (or even any of the other lesser gods, but these are the ones specifically mentioned as trying to heal King Eodred before/after his death) that knows something is fishy about the Kings death and is looking into the matter unofficially on behalf of the church (and maybe also already knows Trinia is innocent based on her inability to acquire a poison that wouldn't be detected as a poison).
