How are people handling the arrow slit-style windows that are found all around the exterior of the surface level? I was originally going to run them as the small windows that they are, but I'm concerned that the players will spend the first session walking around all the external walls and looking in to see all the encounters beforehand, which doesn't feel particularly exciting.

If the PCs choose to scope out the perimeter of the castle and peek into the arrow slits, I'd let them. There's plenty of potential dangers lurking in the fringes of the area, after all, but more importantly, letting 1st level characters get a sort of "preview" of the castle's chambers and potential dangers within is a good way to reward PCs for thinking ahead so that they can plan their exploration.

Gauntlight is 100% meant to accommodate players who wish to explore the encounters in any order they wish, and encouraging this behavior can really help to empower the players and make a dungeon crawl seem less like a linear series of events that can only happen in one order.

If you'd rather preserve the mystery of those rooms for the PCs to discover by opening doors, though, feel free to have all of the arrow slits shuttered from the inside with latched wooden shutters.
