"Dog, guard" Stats? Info?

Liberty's Edge

Hi there,

I was reviewing the equipment list in the core book and noticed theres the option to buy a guard dog for 25gp, but I can't find any stats in the book or even a brief overview of what it can do.

Is this information located in a particular book somewhere that I'll need to buy if I wish to use it in PFS play?

I found the entry in the online version of the Ultimate Equipment book which simply states:

"Guard Dog: This Small, combat-trained dog is bred for battle; breeders favor strength, a thick body, and a low center of gravity. Guard dogs are sold in most large cities and some cultures use them for sport fighting or in some armies' special infantry."

It seems a bit redundant to buy the whole PDF for what amounts to a vague couple of sentences that dont actually explain any stats! It says "Combat Trained" but according to the Handle Animal info, that'd make it the same as a Riding Dog (as opposed to if it said "Fighting Trained", implying it'd know the three tricks Attack, Down and Stay).

Any advise on where I should be looking and what book I need to purhcase for this one would be greatly appreciated. :)

See this post, plus the subsequent posts from Mark Moreland in that thread.

The Ultimate Equipment PDF is a bargain for $10; you're likely to find a lot more than the guard dog that it worth purchasing from it.

Thanks for that Paz, is the "Adventurer's Armoury" the "Ultimate Equipment" then, just renamed? I did find that post previously but being 3 years old and unable to find the book mentioned in the store I was concerned it had been changed again.

I'm assuming I'd still need to buy another book on top of that however with the animal stats too though right?

Means its like $20 just to make use of a 25gp dog... :P

To add to my previous response, 'combat trained' is explained in the Handle Animal skill in the CRB:

PRD wrote:
Combat Training (DC 20): An animal trained to bear a rider into combat knows the tricks attack, come, defend, down, guard, and heel. Training an animal for combat riding takes 6 weeks. You may also “upgrade” an animal trained for riding to one trained for combat by spending 3 weeks and making a successful DC 20 Handle Animal check. The new general purpose and tricks completely replace the animal's previous purpose and any tricks it once knew. Many horses and riding dogs are trained in this way.

The guard dog is based on the 'dog' statblock (small-sized animal), rather than the larger 'riding dog' (medium animal), both of which are in the Bestiary.

Ultimate Equipment is a compilation of equipment from many previous books (including Adventurer's Armory) plus some new material.

By the letter of the rules, yes.

Well, when you put it like that...

Both UE and the Bestiary are very useful, in my experience.

Thank you Paz, guess I'll need to splash out for both books if I want the dog!

Even if this is the reason why you initially purchase it, I can guarantee that you'll get a lot more use out of UE than just that. Heck, even the Bestiary opens up new options you'll probably end up using later, like summon spells (can't use the stat blocks without it!), monster feats for animal companions (or Natural Weapon rangers), and a few races (assuming you don't have access to them elsewhere).
