I'm preparing to start a new game in the new year. It's supposed to be a heist-themed adventure, and we're all starting at 4th level with average wealth-by-level. Here's my question: Is it worth it for everyone to get a hat of disguise?
They're fairly cheap at 1,800 gp, but that's still a hefty chunk of our starting 6,000 gp bankroll. I can picture all manner of scenarios where a party of perfectly-disguised gentleman thieves could be useful, but just how good is the hat? Worth giving up the +1 weapon for? How easy is it to negate? Are there any obvious counters that guards or guardians might use?
And as long as we're on the subject, have any of you shapeshifters out there ever pulled off an impersonation caper? Did you get away with it, or were you spotted by sharp-eyed enemies? Hit me with your best tips, tricks, and strats for allaying suspicion!

I would say probably not completely worth it. In many cases, it might not be necessary to impersonate a specific person rather than a role or a rank (armed guards, staff of the heist location, etc).
For that, Sleeves of Many Garments will probably be enough at 1/9 of the price.
