Gaedrin Lamm question

Curse of the Crimson Throne

Is he based on the Sewer King from the Batman Animated Series episode "The Underdwellers"? I always thought so, as he seems really similar other than not living in a sewer (namely, he has a bunch of runaway kids as his slaves and even has a pet alligator.) Between this and Jolistina, I suspect one of the writers is a pretty big Batman fan.

It might also simply be the fact that Gotham is a big "rich eat the poor" kinda city and Korvosa is that way too.

Feels more like Fagin to me, leaning into the darker aspects of the character...

Doesn't help that Blackjack is basically Bruce Wayne.

My players back when I ran this was losing their mind and kept expecting Rolth Lamm to come back as the Joker after falling in a vat of disease in the last stretch of Book 2 (I forgot the exact circumstances).

It turns out that falling into a pool of necromancy juice is the exact instructions for becoming a Lich, and he comes back after Scarwall has been cleared of Mithrodar to claim the castle as his own.

I think he's mostly inspired by the character The Thiefmaker, from the novel The Lies of Locke Lamora, by Scott Lynch. I HIGHLY recommend the book, it's excellent, and a really good primer for GM'ing CotCT - the AP as many elements in it inspired by that book.

Two of my players separately said the same thing!

I can't find the quote, but one sent me a line out of the book that talked about a drug that was essentially the same as Shiver.

The Thiefmaker takes in orphans and trains them to be thieves (which is Oliver Twist - Dickens).

The parallels are all over. For example there's a character in the book called Vencarlo Barsavi!

They also cut the bridges to part of the city that has a plague outbreak, to quarantine it. The area is called 'The Narrows'.
