SOM: Ranges are undefined in Armada Combat

SOM introduces Armada Combat and most of the rules needed to run it, but does not define what "short," "long," and "extreme" ranges are. Each of the three fleet types has a listed range of 3-5 hexes, but there appears to be nothing that relates this number to the short, long, and extreme ranges that are actually mechanically significant.

For example, a destroyer-class fleet has a range of 4 hexes. What is its short range? What are its long and extreme ranges? Are these all multiples of 4 hexes? Are they some fraction of 4 hexes? The information appears to simply be missing.

Agreed that this isn't well defined.

Considering the size of a starship battlemat, and comparing to ranges in normal starship combat, I think the most likely answer is that the listed range is effectively a range increment. 1x the listed range is short range, 2x the listed range is long and 3x the listed range is extreme.

Agreed. Worth noting that Armada-mode ships can't shoot beyond the -4 "Extreme" range bracket, unlike normal starship combat or personal-scale fights. Certainly not terribly well-phrased though.

I'm going to be using the Armada rules in a few weeks for Horizons of the Vast. Did anyone ever find an official answer to what the range increments mean?
