Looking through the new starship operations PDF (some interesting stuff in there so far) and I noticed that you can upgrade your sensors with Djezet starmetal which adds 50% to scanning ranges e.g. planetary scanners go from 250 to 375 feet range (250 x 1.5 = 375). Surveying scanners double the range to 500 feet on a planet. I'm wondering if you made Djezet surveying scanners would they stack i.e. 250 x 1.5 x 2 = 750 feet?
Which frankly is still a ridiculously short range as you can SEE further than that. I mean the average city block is longer than this scanning range. For those like me used to meters/kilomters 750 feet is 220 meters whereas a city block is usually 80 by 270 meters.
If they don't stack your looking at a maximum in planet scanning range of 500 feet or 150 meters and the base scanner at 250 feet only scans 76 meters away from your ship.
Honestly whether they stack or not I'm house ruling this rubbish. Most airborne radar these day's have a range of EIGHTY miles. Sure they don't consider that a lot of warning re storms and the like but compare sensors capable of scanning 80 miles/128 kilometers vs sensors scaning 250 feet/76 METERS. Given the sci-fi future tech of the game I'd change the feet to miles. So the base sensor can scan 250 miles around the ship on planet, the djezet 375 miles, planetary scanners 500 miles and djezet planetary scanners (if they stack) 750 miles. Hmmm bit long I'll need to play with this maybe 80 miles for base scanners giving us 120, 160 and 240 respectively. That does look better. Especially since these aren't just radar but giving you all sorts of other information too . . . I'll think on this.

Yeah, I would say those distances need to be completely scrapped and revamped. Especially since, for some of the bigger ships capable of landing, that would mean sensors on the front could scarcely even see to the back of their own ship.
If the worry is "Why even leave the ship to check things out?" Put more clear definitions on what ship's sensors can tell you with a planetary scan, and what they can't.
