So with Christmas came Steam gift cards, which soon turned into new games
One of which is No Man's Sky.
So I am taking a bit of a break from Fallout 4 to explore the universe.
Building settlements was one of the things I really loved about Fallout, that and just wandering around making up my own story.
No Man's Sky is all that with less raiders trying to shoot me in the face.
You wake up with no memory on a planet that is not exactly safe to breath on, and from there you just kind of do your own thing.
There is a story to follow but it's not a particularly obtrusive one.
So it wasn't long before I found myself on nice little world with a pink sky and breathable air. Built myself a log cabin, cataloged some plants, rocks and animals, little bit of Xenoarcheology
As I said, it's nice, particularly for a builder like me. No pressure just wander the galaxy and do your own things
Not to say there haven't been a few close calls. There were some cat things tried to eat me, but I figured that was going to be my biggest worry.
I was wrong.
Dug up some alien ruins and found a weird glowing orb. No sooner than I take it do a pair of floaty ball robots show up and start shooting at me. Jumped in my ship and left the planet as quick as I could thinking I would be safe.....
not so much. There are ships in orbit that start shooting right away....and I suck at space combat. Never been good at flight simulators.
So I ran into an asteroid field hopping to ditch them, when I get a weird message from somone offering to save me. I say yes...how could it make things worse.
Death Star appears in front of me and I get on board.
So now I am technically safe
Hopefully someone will tell me what's so important about the Glowing Orb.
So about 20 hours of game play, 4 little bases scattered around two star systems, about 20 words of Gek and one mystery Orb.
and I am looking forward to seeing where my space adventures go next.

I also bought this game over the holidays, but I haven't played it, yet. Free time for video games is very limited. How many hours would you say you've put into this game to get to the point you talk about in your post?
Picked it up at Christmas, and I'm about 20 hours of play so far. I just snuck into an Atlas terminal to see if I could sqeak out some intel. It was willing to give me info but only if I submit to it....kind of decided not to do that, as it seems to be a big red spooky ball of evil.
Right now I have a tourist mission to take a photo of an airless planet. I know just the place, even have a little base hidden in a cave there.

So I met this Gek who offered to help me. I could get help with Artifacts or Sentinels. Well Sentinels have been a bit of a pain so I went with that.
He gives me a Multitool
Just gives it to me. Damn thing must be worth a million credits easy. It's a full on Rifle, not this puny hand tool I've been using. Now a lot of it's slots are broken but there is more than enough to equip it to match my current tool, plus it has Grenade launcher
(which ultimately got me killed)

So I'm following up on some things and I now find myself on a planet where the rain is 94 degrees Celcius and there are a LOT of sentile patrols.
I ended up digging a hole in the ground and travelling by making tunnels everywhere like a gopher. Not great for site seeing but keeps me alive.
Found a crashed ship. Got the engines working and the lift off thrusters but no shields and no weapons. Would be suicide to take off in this system like that. Gonna set up a base here and work on repairs for a while....can't build it above ground, sentinles would see it....Time to build the Rabbit hole I guess.

Sentiels did not like the idea of me building my rabbit hole. And then they figured out my trick with the tunnels and came down looking for me. Had to leave the broken ship behind and flee the planet. Warpped to the next system to find a frieghter convoy under attack by pirates.
Did I mention I suck at space combat.
Not sure how I managed to win that but the captain of the convey gave me some metals as a reward. Stopped at the space station to get the stargate coordinates and then went home to Tango Alpha.

Things are coming along nicely. Hired myself an Overseer and a Scientist to watch over Tango Alpha, currently looking for an Armory captain to build defenses should the Sentinles come looking for me. Got the Landing Pad built and expanding the overall base a fair bit. It's looking good.
Managed to steal that crashed ship from the Sentinels, repairing it little by little but it's still not really spaceworthy.
Today I went to the last planet in my starting system and started up a base there that I call The Red House. Still a lot of work to do on it but it's a nice location overlooking a lake and there is a crashed frieghter up in the mountains behind it.
Also I am pretty fluent in Gek now

It turns out that I did not buy No Man's Sky during Steam's Winter Holiday Sale. But Steam is having a Lunar New Year Sale, so I just picked the game up for $30.00. I'm not sure I feel like it was worth it since by the time I can get around to playing it, another sale will have passed where I could possibly get the game for less, but I was feeling optimistic that I'll have some free time to try it out sometime soon.

I used the same sale to buy the first Subnautica game
It's kind of a middle ground between No man's Sky and Fallout4
No Man's Sky is largely a relaxing explore and build game. Fallout is more survival with all the folks trying to kill you
Subnautica.....is actually kind of eerie. There isn't as much stuff trying to kill you and you have more freedom to build. But the building takes a lot more effort and the game is very tense. You..hear stuff everywhere and you aren't sure what it is, and then something comes out of nowwhere and takes a bit out of you.

Subnautica Update
I had it all. Minisub, big Sub, Prawn suit
I was feeling pretty good about myself
Some Blue Glowing Leviathan killed my big sub....Prawn suit was onboard so that's gone too. (I died as well cause...it exploded before I got off)
So was salvaging materials with the minisub....heading back to it and it starts moving away from me and then in the distance I see a tiny explosion far in the distance and the homing signal for the mini sub vanishes.
then I remember the thing I need to build new vehicles was on the big sub.
Now I have nothing
damn Leviathans
