Elven Curve Blade and Finesse

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

The Elven Curve Blade is a Weapon 1 in CotCT and has Finesse as a trait. However, it only lists Strength and Melee under chance to acquire and for skills it works with in combat. Although this would work with older characters ("If the check invokes Finesse, gain Melee: Dex+2"), all the other Finesse weapons I've seen in Core and CotCT have included Acrobatics or Stealth as usable skills.

Elves.. they always pretend they can do things differently.

Not a bug - the Elven Curve Blade is a pre-existing card (from the Warpriest Class Deck, I think, on memory). Pre-Core, it was always a 2-handed Finesse weapon, so it's still represented as one.

Just to give a bit of love to old "Finesse-style" characters who want a 2 handed weapon, I suppose. It doesn't have any relevance for post-Core characters, but it's not like the design's causing any harm for them.

Yep. As a 2-Handed weapon it doesn't get the freebie Acrobatics style; good for characters who are into that kinda thing, less good for someone like Quinn.

Thanks. I'm looking at playing Varian in CotCT and noticed this when sleeving. It'll work for him, but sounds like there are better weapon options.

Late to the conversation... just noticed this weapon cause I finally drew it in a game.

Gotta say this reasoning seems odd to me. If PACG is representing the PRPG the Elven Curve Blade in the PRPG is a weapon that can be used with the Weapon Finesse feat. Feels like it should have an Acrobatic option in PACG. Falchion seems like the non-finese two handed version.

Just my 2 coppers on RPG flavor.

Of course if I'm consistent in my logic scimitar shouldn't have a Finesse option in PACG because its not a weapon you can use with Weapon Finesse in the RPG. You have to take a very specific feat called Dervish Dance to get the same effect.

Bonus: Did a quick check. My logic for both Elven Curve Blade and Scimitar also holds true for P2E-Playtest.

In PRPG, the Elven Curveblade takes an exotic weapon feat and has a fairly limited audience of characters who use it. Accordingly, we don't really want it to feel like an ideal weapon choice for someone like Lem or Quinn.

On the other hand, we do want the Shortbow and Dagger to be natural rogue weapons, the Starknife and Kukri to be natural Monk weapons, etc. So, that's the design intent there.
