Wishing it were already August

Gamer Life General Discussion

So, some months ago I started running Wrath of the Righteous for a friend, using another system (because I've never felt smart enough for PF 1e) and employing the various npcs to help him out instead of other players' pcs (we hoped a friend would join in as well but till now he just hasn't been able/interested).

Turned out to be a really good experience. We had lots of fun, his character is amazing, I managed to convert the material quite well... I used Mutants and Masterminds and, well, it wasn't too difficult.

We've finished the 1st adventure.

And now I feel the need for actual Pathfinder. 2e.

But it comes out in August.

In the meantime M&M has sort of disappointed me - a lot of bookkeeping and sometimes you can't even replicate how some powers and abilities work very well (you don't wanna know how much a cleric with the idealist archetype would pay to channel their deity's realm... plus I'm still wondering how one would build "swallow whole". Oh and areas of effect are all HUGE).

I don't feel like running this campaign with M&M anymore. Ideally I'd use PF 2e, but that would mean waiting until we get 2e mythic rules, which could be never. I've checked various other systems - Fate, Cortex, Savage Worlds... but nothing really grabs me.

Alternately we could play something else in the meantime, but it probably shouldn't involve learning a lot of rules and setting lore, because I'm just so dying to run PF 2e. Also, it would be nice to have an AP or at least a long adventure, or a series thereof. August is after all still quite far away.

Another possibility is just not playing until August. Maybe I should buy myself some ps4 game with a lot of replayability, or a very long one, I don't know.

So, yeah, either I find some alternative to M&M and we keep playing WotR, or I find something else to play that doesn't require a huge emotional/intellectual investiture b/c honestly I have trouble thinking of anything not PF-related. Or I go into standby mode for some months.

Have you ever felt like this in your life? Like you're wishing your life away for something that can't arrive too soon, and in the meantime you're at an impasse?

Do you have any suggestions? How would you pass the time in my shoes? Is there a way to avoid suspending this campaign? Or another game we could try? Some other way to kill time?

And thanks for listening to my whinings (mustn't be pretty...).

Have you tried going outside?

Pathfinder Classic isn't THAT hard, despite what you may have surmised from the message boards Pathfinder Classic isn't rocket science, just use what you want and f~@# the rest, no one is going to bang on your door for doing it wrong.

There's always Starfinder.

If you think Pathfinder Classic is confusing try Rifts, Robotech or Palladium Fantasy RPG.

Have you tried going outdoors, I hear it's spring in the northern hemisphere.

I never spend my time wishing my time away, spring and summer are too precious for that.

Yeah, going outdoors sounds like a plan... but you normally can't roleplay outside (where are you gonna roll dice? Unless you have a phone app - clever!).

Kidding aside, yeah, I do go out, not as much as I should to be more fit, but I do. The point is more what to do to engage my creativity and love of stories.

I have had some looks at Rifts and Palladium Fantasy, and think I remember an ungodly amount of random detail... then again I've also read a lot of GURPS. Love the realism, could never play it.

So... Starfinder is a good idea, you know? I must ponder this.

Otherwise... actually trying PF, with the mythic rules nonetheless, for WotR...

Well, even though it seems very bloated and complex I somehow do like 1e too... I could try.

Of course it also depends on what my player(s?) will think about this.

Thank you for the gentle nudging, captain. Maybe I could do as you say.

I speak from experience, both Skull & Shackles and Starfinder were wildly anticipated in our house.

I also live where we have 6 months of cold and snow so waiting away a whole spring and summer are a no go for us. :-)

The lid for the Beginner's Box and a picnic table to put the mat (I have a super mega sized Chessex mat) are all you need!

We do quite a bit of outdoor gaming.

If I lived where you live I'd probably appreciate the spring and summer months a lot more. Here in northern Italy we started getting spring temperatures for a good portion of winter and are now officially deep into late spring. We're feeling global warming a lot.

In other news I checked Starfinder and alas it's too heavy on lore and mechanics for something to while away the time before 2e hits the shelves. My impression at least.

I still have a couple ideas (one is trying PF 1e, as you said), but I'm not holding my breath.

If you have a used book store that has rpg stuff you could always go there, pick up something old school or interesting and roll with that until August.

That way you save some money if you get bored with it.

Yeah, but it's a dry heat.

Dry heat is better than humid. We have humid summers and it can get downright unbearable without a fan.

Unless you live by the sea, then it's heavenly... when the weather isn't all mixed up because of global warming.

Anyways yes, used rpgs are definitely a good option.

I'm also trying something else... I've always wanted to try Eclipse Phase, but never found the time, either because I was running APs or some other reason. I'm thinking I could read all the lore (which I'll have to do one day, so why not now?) and then if there's time left run something for whomever feels like.

It's different enough from PF that I don't feel them as competing interests. And it's hard SF, so it has nothing to do with potential Starfinder campaigns and whatnot.

It's a possibility at least.

We're embarking on Dawn of Flames this weekend, seems like a fun summery campaign.

Mmm, read the blurb, sounds interesting! And it's written by James L Sutter - you're starting out with a bang!

It has my all time favorite trap!

:
A glitter bomb!

Also, it begins with...

:
fighting a fire whale with your starship

Yeah, I'm pretty excited for this Adventure Path so far.
