Hi all. I'll need four posts to ask my question. This is post 1/4.
I was always under the impression that once a person makes a die roll using the [ dice ] tag, that the results of that roll stay with the person (or perhaps the alias) until they submit a post with that specific die roll. For example, if I were to roll a d20, preview it to see the result, but not submit the post, I could come back at a later time and make the post and the die roll would come out the same.
I feel like I've experienced this in the past, but I don't have any specific recollection of testing the feature in that way with those results. Now, however, the results are different than what I feel they should be. I can make a post, preview a die roll, remove the dice tag equation from the post and click submit, and put the dice tag equation in a new post to receive different results.

As you can see*, I previewed 3d20 in two different posts to different results than when I actually submitted the dice tag.
* Well, you can't actually see it, but I invite you to test it for yourself.
Is this how the dice roller is intended to work? Has it always worked this way and I'm just now realizing that?
Obviously from a PbP perspective, this allows exploiting dice rolls. Don't like that attack roll? Contrive a reason to submit the post without the dice tag -- such as making that post all about an ooc comment -- and then make your attack roll in a new post, hoping for better results. Or make your attack, but "forget" to make that undesirable saving throw until you "remember" later in another post.
I know role-playing is a friendly game that relies on trust between friends, but I'd much rather that the temptation to cheat isn't there.

Theoretically, you could generate the random seed from the thread instead of the post. But, that would require parsing back through the entire thread looking for what numbers have been used already each time you preview or submit a post with a dice tag. On long threads, the delay might even become noticeable.
Personally, I prefer each new post to be freshly random. It helps the game seem less deterministic. It also prevents unintentional meta-gaming when I am drafting a post and see previewed rolls, but combat ends before I post and I don't end up using them. Knowing I have a really good or really bad roll coming up would almost certainly bias me on what checks I attempt.

What is happening here is that you are still posting something. If you preview a post including rolls, leave the thread without posting, and then come back, the same rolls show up. I'm not going to go further than this into the details, because knowing how to cheat the dice roller is not something it is good to have widespread.

I understand what's happening. I'm trying to find out if it's intended and if it's always happened that way.
I'm pretty sure that's how its always worked. They fixed a loophole where someone could edit the post with the die roll, and it would reroll the dice, so that once that particular dice tag is rolled, now it doesn't change if you edit the post and resubmit.
