so questions about operative abilities vs feats bonus. an operative will get free skill focus on two skills (insight bonus) which is a feat. but operatives edge will also give an insight bonus too but its an ability. wouldn't they stack as they are two different things (ability vs feat) and if not why? I know the book says named bonuses don't stack but the example references outside sources influencing abilities or saves. if they aren't meant to stack then why give it to the class at all (the free skill focus) and operative edge. can someone clear this up and not reference to Pathfinder rules as technically that is a different rule set. also note that the rules in the book about bonus is in the combat section not in the skill or class section. so you can always say that is during combat for additional bonuses.

Flagged this to be moved to the Starfinder Rules discussion.
The operative's edge bonus (insight) does not stack with the skill focus bonus (insight). This was confirmed by the devs as intentional.
Even though they don't stack, there are two key benefits to skill focus:
- It gives a larger bonus to the two specialization skills early, helping the operative be especially good at their specialization
- At 7th level when operative's edge would 'catch up' to the bonus from skill focus, they gain a feature that allows them to take 10 on skills they have skill focus in, even in combat!

see that is the question i am trying to clear up because when i look under rules there is nothing that states that it doesn't stack. the only section that talks about not staking are in combat section it refers to bonus given from outside sources not from abilities. (from the book example an aura from a pet combine with a spell) that i can see why it doesn't stack but when you look under the skills section it just says all bonus. not some bonus as long as they don't stack.
