As fun as that might be, a dice tower is probably a reasonably acceptable alternative. Be sure to make it out of a sufficiently hard material and use solid metal dice so that everyone in a 2 mile radius will know you're rolling them bones.

Agreed. I've also used old boxes to throw into. Or bounced dice off of the DM screen. (check with your DM, cause not all screens are balanced the same!) Point is that you want to be able to really give the dice a forceful throw, not just tipping your hand over.
