Should I have gone fighter so soon...?

General Discussion

I am playing a level 1 Mystic healer level 1 Soldier Blitz. My thinking is that taking that one level of soldier gives my pc so much where as another level of mystic would not.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I's fine, you just have the rough spot when every one else get's specialization at 3 and you won't. You pretty much are obligated to take a specific specialization as your feat at 3 and the edit it at level 5 unless you are not doing much with weapons.

I have a techno 4/soldier 1 that started as 1/1. At 4th level, use the mnemonic editor to change weapon specialization to versatile specialization and you'll be fine. The only pain I experienced was going into 4th level content without the extra spell slots.

not a huge fan of the blitz solder , it is to me a somewhat overrated option for a otherwise great class but any of the solders work as a decent dip

What else would you take as a mystic?

Arcane Assailant - a magic weapon is somewhat nice, but you can use spells to address the gap this covers
Armor Storm - Reasonable if you want to do unarmed attacks, but you lose the scaling option
Bombard - Not scaling the level 1 ability makes this bad
Guard - Not great, but not bad passive bonus
Hit-and-Run - Effectively 1 bonus feat
Sharpshoot - If you're focusing ranged, it's ok. Blitz movement can be used to remove cover.

Blitz is effectively 2 feats, but they stack with the actual feats.

Blitz, Guard, and Sharpshoot are definitely the go-tos for anyone dipping into Soldier - as you point out, the others are decidedly lackluster. Blitz is particularly amusing due to its curious scaling - it's breathtakingly good L1, and L9 isn't bad, but L5, L13, and L17 are all melee dependent, so a gun soldier will want it less (potentially as a secondary style) than a non-soldier dipping in. Guard has similar problems - the L13 benefit is worse than a feat or easily available armor upgrade, and the L17 benefit was clearly designed without understanding how damage works (splitting the damage between two characters who both have DR, which will be universally true by L17, is better than just one taking it, since that way you get the DR twice), so you only want it as a secondary style or a dip. Sharpshoot is the only style I've seen that seems to scale at a regular rate, without being way better early or late.

I've got a level 6 ranged Blitz soldier in Legendary Planet, though I have started picking up unarmed strike feats because the melee has been plentiful. The whole point of the character was to run around at 50' movement speed to create crossfire opportunities while having ridiculous initiative (currently +14).

Sharpshoot does have great scaling overall. Honestly, so does Armor Storm.

Serisan how do you have +14 initiative? 4 for improved init and +4 init from blits and if you maxed out dex to 18 thats another +4 init....tell me your secret. Or that I did not see.

+4 dex personal upgrade + 18 base dex + blitz + imp init = +14
